Fringe set for a cut

Saints had enough good players on the pitch to beat Leeds according to Nigel Adkins.

The Saints boss handed his fringe stars, including the likes of Guly do Prado, Steve De Ridder and Emmanuel Mayuka, the chance to prove they deserve a Premier League place but was badly let down by some of them as they lost 3-0 to the Championship side at Elland Road.

A disappointed Adkins said: “We have come out to win a game of football and on paper, in theory, that was feasible but we haven’t gone and produced it.”

He continued: “I take full responsibility. I’ve always gone and done that.

“If we win the players take all that side of it but it’s my responsibility. I’m manger of the football club.

“We want to win and I’ve put a team out and given players an opportunity to go and prove it and maybe some of them have not been in the team and had an opportunity to go and run and show a desire to play for this football club.”

Adkins did though praise 19-year-old Lloyd Isgrove who shone after coming off the bench.

“I thought Lloyd Isgrove had a very positive impact off the bench and was a real bright spark and produced more in that half hour than some of the other players,” said Adkins.

Once as so often happens this season the defence collapses and lets in 2 or 3 goals in as many minutes. we can't go on scoring 2 gaols a match and the defence letting in 3 or 4 each half. sorry rant over with, COYR;s

I would have preferred to see Calum Chambers on at some stage, he has proved he knows where the goal is. Ryan Seager is another one that could step up.

Well where do we start.on paper the team picked to start looked good enough to beat a midtable championship team.the core of which were ex pompey players.Brown helped them get relegated from the Prem. under Avram Grant.Ashdown,Varney and Pearce helped them go down from the championship last year when we went up.But give the ex pompey lads their due they know how to scrap.as does Tonge and Diouff.Sorry to say SAINTS weren't at the races.Unrortunately NA was unable to rally the side at half time and they were just as useless in the second half as the first..MAYUKA and TAD LEE are top notch international players and if NA had got the formation right they should have torn the Leeds defence to shreds.Mayuka won the AFRICA cup with ZAMBIA and LEE won the ASIA cup with JAPAN.On last nights performance playing under NA inept system both players looked pedestrian.
In my mind the biggest blunder Adkins made last night was the bench he pickedNO.LAMBERT,ADA
M ,RODRIGUEZ,CLYNE,YOS
HIDA,FONTE,DAVIS,PUN
CHEON OR MORGAN.At least 4 of those should have warmed the bench in case things went wrong..And yes things did go wrong big time. For what its worth heres my potted impressions of the teams performance
KELVIN-Probably our best player on the night.Should be reinstated against WBA.But he still had to pick the ball out of the net 3 times and he couldn't save the penalty.
BUTTERFIELD-One of our better defenders on the night but that isn't saying much.
JOS-Pretty useless on the night he is going backwards.i think that he struggles at the top level.even though no way are leeds top notch. No wonder Celtic got rid of him.
I can't see Jos displacing either Fonte or Yoshida on this showing.
SEABORNE was worse than useless.I am afraid to say that he is unlikely to reach the level of consistency that he showed before his hospitalisation..One to get rid of in January or as soon as Aaron Martin comes back.
BEN REEVES.Strange to see him at left back when Luke Shaw was on the bench.Would have started him in midfield but Ben did ok on the night. .CHAPLOW.-i am sorry to say that dear old Chappers did not really cut the mustard. He huffed and puffed and got forwars towards the end but he was totally outbattled by the likes of Brown and Tonge. On this showing he is not up to playing at the top level week in week out.
WARD-PROWSE like Reeves did ok but he has performed better for us this season with the likes of Adam and Punch around him.
GULY-Hard to make any sense about Guly.He has been below par for the best part of a year.Unlike some i don't blame him for everything that has gone wrong this season but i think he should be loaned out as soon as possible to either
1.pompey-lets get Brian Howard here instead of him
2.Brighton- and get Dean Hammond back.
3.Notts F-and get BILLY SHARP back
4.Sheff. Wed.-and get Antonio back.
5.do a swap with whoever PAPA WEGGO now plays for.
6.Blackfield and Langley-get KEV Gibbons back in exchange. He can still put a shift in.
7.Barcelona -a straight swap for Lionel Messi.
8.Tamla Motown-swap him for Lionel RITCHIE.good for a sing song in the back of the coach after one of those famous away victories.WHAT AWAY VICTORIES.Oh well we did beat stevenage away.
STEVE DE RIDDER -Oh dear what has happened to the player who was our saviour away against Reading last year.Another one to ship out in January.
TADANARI LEE-NEVER GOT GOING.OK HE NEVER GOT THE SERVICE but he looked inept.Still worth a place on the bench against WBA though
MAYUKA-Ploughed a lone furow up front all night.Never looked like shooting let alone scoring but still worth a start either at WBA or the next home match.
Luke Shaw -looked shaky when he came on but NA should have started with him
LLOYD ISGROVE-Not the best match to make your first team debut in but looked full of potential.reward him by a place on the bench soon.preferably at home.
All in all our poorest performance of the season.Agood cup run would have set us up nicely for the premiership battles ahead.I think most of the players given a start last night will not be getting many chances in the premiership this year.As roger mcguinn said A BAD NIGHT AT THE WHISKEY.
