Saints manager out to rewrite history

Nigel Adkins is aiming to write his own bit of Premier League history after being given the nod to carry on as Saints manager.

Saints’ poor start to the season is the fourth worst in the history of the Premier League – and of the three poorer, only one managed to avoid relegation.

Adkins, whose side have four points and a minus 14 goal difference after ten games, will be aiming to buck that trend and follow the example of Everton by turning their season around.

With ten games of 1994/95 gone, the Toffees had just three points.

But, in a season where four teams went down, they finished five points above the relegation zone in 15th.

WHAT SPARKED A TWEET EXCHANGE BETWEEN MATT LE TISSIER AND OLYMPIAN PETE WATERFIELD? Click here

The other teams with worst starts after ten games that didn’t avoid the drop were Swindon in 1993/94, who went down having conceded 100 goals, Manchester City under Alan Ball in 1995/96 and Sheffield Wednesday in 1999/2000.

Portsmouth also had four points after ten games as they were relegated in 2009/10, but had a better goal difference.

Of some comfort to Saints, a few other clubs have also had four points after ten games, albeit with a better goal difference, and survived.

Earn your money Echo, an attempt to create a unique piece about Saints would be refreshing. This content re- hashing of stats and quotes etc used in the other stories on the same web page is lazy and tiresome. Do you employ any 'Real' sports journalists?

Generally, teams with a poor start are poor for the rest of the season. Our position at the moment is that we are only a couple of wins from safety..the important thing is for it not to get worse. We have been affected by various factors...tough start, trouble signing defenders (for whatever reason) and injuries. Adkins has to stop the rot and the team must start churning out results...deserved or not. Saints in the past saved themselves with team spirit and guts. Time for that now, starting Saturday. COYR.

On 9th November 1960 Senator John F Kennedy won the election for the president of the United States. On the 16th November we beat Liverpool 4-2 .. away ... in the third round of the League Cup. I think the USA has just elected a new president, the link is clear and Nigel Adkins must surely be cheered by the obvious correlation

On the 9th November 1965 there was a blackout in the North East of the USA affecting 30 million people of the United States and Ontario, Canada lasting for up to 13 hours. The blackout was blamed on a sophisticated power system that was ironically built to ensure electricity would be available in an emergency.

On Saturday 6th November 1965 Saints drew 0-0 away to Middlesborough.

The USA have had another massive disaster .. surely the two are linked.

How come the Echo hasn't noticed this and reported it so we can ponder the inner meaning of these historic events.

ALICESDAD HAS DECIDED TO REWRITE HISTORY.

I am rewriting it as follows:

Man City 0 Saints 124
Saints 239 Wigan 0
Saints 328 Man Utd 0
Arsenal 0 Saints 349
Saints 4 Aston Villa 1
Everton 0 Saints 3499
Saints 2398 Fulham 2398
West Ham 0 Saints 1003
Saints 678 Spurs 0
West Brom 0 Saints 56

The Echo savages our defence for letting a goal in against Aston Villa. Adkins is threatened with the sack after the 2398-All draw against Fulham and 1457 of the goals are blamed on Fox on the Echo website even though he was substituted after the first 453. Adkins has a chat with Cortese by the vending machine and the Echo reports they have had Crunchie talks.

Elsewhere, Harold Rednap has closed his dogs' bank account with Lloyds Bank after they refused to pay out on mis sold repayment insurance.

Interesting. This is known as dissociative identity disorder with two or multiple personalities.

Often caused by trauma in childhood it is frequently accompanied by depression, bi-polarism and substance abuse. Sufferers display severe memory impairment well beyond normal forgetfullness.

They often accuse others of abuse owing to distortion in their memory recovery. They will also sincerely deny a crime or misdemeanor as it was committed by a different identity state.

Keep him on here so we can study his behaviour.

Creative journalism is something the Echo Sports writers seem to be lacking. Never have I seen a paper obsessed with one topic.
As a previous poster stated how many different pictures of Adkins has the Echo shown in the past month ? It has to be at least 30 as we had 2 new ones today.
Surely as bad as things are it is high time the Echo needs to give Nigel a break ....I can't imagine how Nigel must feel seeing his picture in the Echo on a daily basis.
I am sure he has enough stress trying to turn things around and it would make him less sttressful if the Echo would give him a break from their obsession with Adkins stories.
Nigel has done wonders for the Club and needs all the encouragement the Echo has the capability to give him ....not the negative articles that we read daily .
Come on Mr Sports Editor give nigel a break and use some creativity in writing some stories of interest l for your readers such as a story about Ramirez and how he is adapting to life in Southampton and his hopes and dreams for the Club.

I have been a Saint supporter for 40 years so bear this in mind when i say:
NA has done up to this season a great job and is a honorable and likeable man
He made very bad mistakes in subs over several games.
He if as i think had some input has made some very bad choices in starting line ups especially defence changing goal keepers and buying new players.
It is very impresive and touching the loyalty of the posts on the DE forums
but to critisise all other opinions is childish and shows a lack of understanding of a diplomatic and equel voice / opinions.
I hope with all my heart we win Saturday but if again we lose NA should go, Who will come in you will ask
Well i wanted GS but it looks like Scotland will have him so i say

I hope you turn it around NA but now

Shout your lung out tomorrow - watch the team's heads lift and we'll help them to get us moving in the right direction.

mouthwatering! are you a swansea fan ? I bet there looking forward to it.

Laugishing 11th in the table on 12 points having beaten West Ham, QPR and Wigan. Held Chelsea to a draw.

They must be really worried.
Thanks for your interest, actually I’m a Saints fan aren’t you?
I’m not familiar with the concept of Laugishing, is that skuntish.

Swansea reminds me a lot of Southampton. I think it's the utilitarian municipal architecture and the beauty of the surrounding countryside that does it. I genuinely wish them every success this year.

After all that thought you're guilty of exactly the same charge that you level at other posters.
I for one don't care if you've supported Saints for 40 or 4 years (although if it is forty I would expect you to hold slightly more long term views and expectations on the current situation).
Kind of sums up football supporters, put 10 of them in a room and 8 of them could manage England.

Yea i heard the same thing on my bus, cant say what cleaner it was he might get the push..........get real!!
I heard the same rumour. I was in my local pub and I happened to be talking to a guy who knows somebody who empties the garbage for somebody else who happens to be a postman and he happens to deliver the letters to somebody else who does dog grooming for somebody else who owns a dog and walks it in the New Forest who happened to meet somebody who said they worked in the Finance department at St Mary's and he said they were not paying their builders and other bills.... Reliable sources guys... remember you heard it here.
Sorry randre, you're talking poopoo, the dog walker in the Forest happened to meet somebody who said they worked in the Finance department at Fratton!, Not St.Mary's, I know this cos the vet that treated the dog also treated my best friends mothers cat and he told th person in the pub that you originally spoke to, so get your facts right mate.
Thinking about it though, it could be bull mud! I don't think there is a Finance Dept. at Fratton, just a hot dog stand and that's going into liquidation
Anyway, wish some people would stop talking cr@p! At least I know Im talking FACT!!!!

STID
aah, see that's where Chinese whispers come into play... I think you could well be right... However I do know for FACT that Fratton does have a finance department, it is situated near the Charity Collection tins.
We need to clear this up mate, you get back to the man in the pub, i'll get back to the vet and lets get clarity on the matter eh!
We wouldn't want to be the sort of club that sh!ts on the locals and doesn't pay for things would we? I've heard of some other clubs that do that, shameful!
I wouldn't want my club to be like that in a million years!

the more money a banker has the more money a banker wants.bankers make money for themselves by using other peoples hard earnt cash.how much of his own money has Cortese actually invested in the club.and regarding next seasons premiership money-best case scenario or parachute payments-worse case scenario-hasn't he meant to have mortgaged most of said sums off to obtain a loan with some bank hidden away in some caribean tax haven.said documents relating to said loan were meant to have been lodged at company house a couple of months ago.
I don't see the point you trying to make, I doubt if anyone on here would have any idea about the finances of the Club, so would not be in any position to say anything. You are making mischief but seem to basing your opinion on hearsay.

True, you never said anything about not paying the builders.

What you seem to be saying is that he wants to get richer and richer by borrowing money and then paying it back with premiership money or parachute payments. I'm afraid that doesn't make much sense to me.

the money borrowed or that will be made available to be borrowed will we hope be used by the club.the point i was trying to make was that as far as i am aware CORTESE made no initial investment in the company and got his position through working for Marcus L.The untimely death of Marcus has meant that Cortese seems to have even more power at the club.i can accept a benign despot if he makes the right decisions for the club.At the moment i can see the wheels coming off of the fabled and much touted 5 year plan.
Cortese refuses to allow Radio Solent to run a pre season fans forum anymore and with the new official website user unfriendly i like a lot of fans rely on the excellent journalism provided by the ECHO to keep me informed on what is happening.
Getting back to the mysterious loan article i do believe that it was mentioned that Everton once entered into a similar arrangement. There financial predicament has been well documented over the years but maybe such a loan has helped them to become genuine top 4 premiership contenders. If the same thing happens to us a couple of seasons down the line then i will be one of the first to congratulate mr Cortese. If however we follow 2 successive promotions with 2 successive relegation i like many other saints fans will no doubt criticise him.If he was more open with our wide fanbase i would be more welcoming to him.Matt Le Tissier thinks that Cortese isn't the great saving grace that some laud him to be and i have a lot of respect for Matty both as a player and as a decent honest human being.

The article does not draw the proper analogy between Everton and Saints. In 1994-95 Eveton were 22nd in the league table. Today Saints are 20th. Therefore, Everton were worse off and they still escaped relegation.

Hurrah! Someone's got the Dylan Thomas reference. I was going to turn this thread into a tribute to Swansea's literary heritage but I managed him, Cerys from Catatonia (who isn't even from Swansea) and then sort of run out of steam.

Did Catherine Zeta Jones ever write a book?
Good effort. I only know Barry Island Welsh literature:
Tidy, Do you want an omelette, Oh Oh Oh, Skunts are going down to League 2 ...... CRACKING!!!!
I bloody love the Welsh accent. Always 'ave done, isn't it?

NA has done up to this season a great job and is a honorable and likeable man
He made very bad mistakes in subs over several games.
He if as i think had some input has made some very bad choices in starting line ups especially defence changing goal keepers and buying new players.
It is very impresive and touching the loyalty of the posts on the DE forums
but to critisise all other opinions is childish and shows a lack of understanding of a diplomatic and equel voice / opinions.
I hope with all my heart we win Saturday but if again we lose NA should go, Who will come in you will ask
Well i wanted GS but it looks like Scotland will have him so i say
i do not know but it cannot get any worse if we carryon loosing with NA things can only get better, i do not want us to go down and if you say you prefer to go down with NA rather than without him then with all respect you are NOT a Saints fan but a NA groppie
I hope you turn it around NA but now
if we lose Saturday something must change for the sake of the club
Roll on your comments on how NA is great i fo not care, i care about SFC

After all that thought you're guilty of exactly the same charge that you level at other posters.
I for one don't care if you've supported Saints for 40 or 4 years (although if it is forty I would expect you to hold slightly more long term views and expectations on the current situation).
Kind of sums up football supporters, put 10 of them in a room and 8 of them could manage England.
there was no accusations of being guilty to other posters just not understanding wanting to go down
with NA rather than staying up with
another manager, if that was not clear
I hope it is now.
Everyone has a right to their opinion
and comments but try to fully understand others before reacting.

WOW! Just watched Atkins interview on Player- best interview I've seen from a manager in ages!
Honest, positive, forward looking, not evading questions and raring to go!

Love this guy, we'd be fools to let him go.
Back to back promotions- 2nd time that's ever been done in the history of the league plus he relishes the fight!

Give him time, he will get it right.

Up the reds!!

The issue is not so much whether I agree or not. (In fact, it's a bit of both.) What irked me is that you seem to feel that it is okay to criticise other people's opinions and insult them (e.g. "if you say you prefer to go down with NA rather than without him then with all respect you are NOT a Saints fan but a NA groppie") and, at the same, believe "to critisise all other opinions is childish and shows a lack of understanding of a diplomatic and equel voice / opinions". To me, with all due respect, that makes you a hypocrite.
