Saints manager out to rewrite history
8:23am Friday 9th November 2012 in Sport
Nigel Adkins is aiming to write his own bit of Premier League history after being given the nod to carry on as Saints manager.
Saints’ poor start to the season is the fourth worst in the history of the Premier League – and of the three poorer, only one managed to avoid relegation.
Adkins, whose side have four points and a minus 14 goal difference after ten games, will be aiming to buck that trend and follow the example of Everton by turning their season around.
With ten games of 1994/95 gone, the Toffees had just three points.
But, in a season where four teams went down, they finished five points above the relegation zone in 15th.
WHAT SPARKED A TWEET EXCHANGE BETWEEN MATT LE TISSIER AND OLYMPIAN PETE WATERFIELD? Click here
The other teams with worst starts after ten games that didn’t avoid the drop were Swindon in 1993/94, who went down having conceded 100 goals, Manchester City under Alan Ball in 1995/96 and Sheffield Wednesday in 1999/2000.
Portsmouth also had four points after ten games as they were relegated in 2009/10, but had a better goal difference.
Of some comfort to Saints, a few other clubs have also had four points after ten games, albeit with a better goal difference, and survived.

Earn your money Echo, an attempt to create a unique piece about Saints would be refreshing. This content re- hashing of stats and quotes etc used in the other stories on the same web page is lazy and tiresome. Do you employ any 'Real' sports journalists?

Get over it he is here to stay for as long as the club want him!
He is our Manager.
It is our club.
You have businesses in the same City - just support a fellow business and back the man positively.
I'm not condoning the reporting of the 1970's when every Echo reporter wore rose tinted glasses, even during the 1974 season...but please just try to be more positive.

On the 9th November 1965 there was a blackout in the North East of the USA affecting 30 million people of the United States and Ontario, Canada lasting for up to 13 hours. The blackout was blamed on a sophisticated power system that was ironically built to ensure electricity would be available in an emergency.
On Saturday 6th November 1965 Saints drew 0-0 away to Middlesborough.
The USA have had another massive disaster .. surely the two are linked.
How come the Echo hasn't noticed this and reported it so we can ponder the inner meaning of these historic events.

Everton 0 Saints 3499

The Echo savages our defence for letting a goal in against Aston Villa. Adkins is threatened with the sack after the 2398-All draw against Fulham and 1457 of the goals are blamed on Fox on the Echo website even though he was substituted after the first 453. Adkins has a chat with Cortese by the vending machine and the Echo reports they have had Crunchie talks.
Elsewhere, Harold Rednap has closed his dogs' bank account with Lloyds Bank after they refused to pay out on mis sold repayment insurance.

As a previous poster stated how many different pictures of Adkins has the Echo shown in the past month ? It has to be at least 30 as we had 2 new ones today.
Surely as bad as things are it is high time the Echo needs to give Nigel a break ....I can't imagine how Nigel must feel seeing his picture in the Echo on a daily basis.
I am sure he has enough stress trying to turn things around and it would make him less sttressful if the Echo would give him a break from their obsession with Adkins stories.
Nigel has done wonders for the Club and needs all the encouragement the Echo has the capability to give him ....not the negative articles that we read daily .
Come on Mr Sports Editor give nigel a break and use some creativity in writing some stories of interest l for your readers such as a story about Ramirez and how he is adapting to life in Southampton and his hopes and dreams for the Club.

I have been a Saint supporter for 40 years so bear this in mind when i say:
NA has done up to this season a great job and is a honorable and likeable man
He made very bad mistakes in subs over several games.
He if as i think had some input has made some very bad choices in starting line ups especially defence changing goal keepers and buying new players.
It is very impresive and touching the loyalty of the posts on the DE forums
but to critisise all other opinions is childish and shows a lack of understanding of a diplomatic and equel voice / opinions.
I hope with all my heart we win Saturday but if again we lose NA should go, Who will come in you will ask
Well i wanted GS but it looks like Scotland will have him so i say
i do not know but it cannot get any worse if we carryon loosing with NA things can only get better, i do not want us to go down and if you say you prefer to go down with NA rather than without him then with all respect you are NOT a Saints fan but a NA groppie
I hope you turn it around NA but now
if we lose Saturday something must change for the sake of the club
Roll on your comments on how NA is great i fo not care, i care about SFC
end of story

Look out for Michu, we need to mark him out of the game. I said previously that Baggies had the bargain loan signing of the year in Romelu Lukaku, I would say Swansea have the bargain signing of the year (2 million) with this lad, class.
Laugishing 11th in the table on 12 points having beaten West Ham, QPR and Wigan. Held Chelsea to a draw.
They must be really worried.
I’m not familiar with the concept of Laugishing, is that skuntish.
Would you happen to be from the small town in Hampshire that is languishing at the bottom of League 1? mouth-watering!

I for one don't care if you've supported Saints for 40 or 4 years (although if it is forty I would expect you to hold slightly more long term views and expectations on the current situation).
Kind of sums up football supporters, put 10 of them in a room and 8 of them could manage England.

What you seem to be saying is that he wants to get richer and richer by borrowing money and then paying it back with premiership money or parachute payments. I'm afraid that doesn't make much sense to me.

Cortese refuses to allow Radio Solent to run a pre season fans forum anymore and with the new official website user unfriendly i like a lot of fans rely on the excellent journalism provided by the ECHO to keep me informed on what is happening.
Getting back to the mysterious loan article i do believe that it was mentioned that Everton once entered into a similar arrangement. There financial predicament has been well documented over the years but maybe such a loan has helped them to become genuine top 4 premiership contenders. If the same thing happens to us a couple of seasons down the line then i will be one of the first to congratulate mr Cortese. If however we follow 2 successive promotions with 2 successive relegation i like many other saints fans will no doubt criticise him.If he was more open with our wide fanbase i would be more welcoming to him.Matt Le Tissier thinks that Cortese isn't the great saving grace that some laud him to be and i have a lot of respect for Matty both as a player and as a decent honest human being.

You do not agree with my comments
which is fair enough but why?
Explain or stop just comenting just for the sake of it please.

I for one don't care if you've supported Saints for 40 or 4 years (although if it is forty I would expect you to hold slightly more long term views and expectations on the current situation).
Kind of sums up football supporters, put 10 of them in a room and 8 of them could manage England.
with NA rather than staying up with
another manager, if that was not clear
I hope it is now.

Honest, positive, forward looking, not evading questions and raring to go!
Love this guy, we'd be fools to let him go.
Back to back promotions- 2nd time that's ever been done in the history of the league plus he relishes the fight!
Give him time, he will get it right.
Up the reds!!

To me, with all due respect, that makes you a hypocrite.
