Dyer strike costs Saints vital victory

Southampton's under-fire manager Nigel Adkins was denied a much-need victory by Swansea today as another former academy graduate returned to haunt their former club.
Two weeks ago Gareth Bale helped Tottenham to a 2-1 victory at St Mary's, and this afternoon Nathan Dyer came off the bench to deny the south coast club all three points.
Saints came into the game under no illusions of how important it was to pick up a victory, as speculation mounted over the future of manager Adkins.
The hosts responded in the ideal manner and, having dominated the first half, continued well after the break and took a deserved lead through Morgan Schneiderlin.
But, like so many times before this season, Saints' defence proved their undoing as Maya Yoshida failed to control a pass from goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, with Dyer nipping in to collect the ball and fire home to secure a point for the Welsh side.
Adkins named 17-year-old Luke Shaw in his team for today's game, which saw the left-back become the youngest ever player to start a Premier League match for Saints.
His appearance came in a match of grave importance for the hosts, whose fans chanted 'one Nigel Adkins' from the outset in support of their manager.
The hosts started well and, soon after Ashley Williams cleared a threatening corner, Schneiderlin blazed over from the edge of the box.
Saints captain Adam Lallana forced Gerhard Tremmel into action with a quick turn and strike, before Gaston Ramirez curled a left-footed effort just wide of the German's right-hand post from 25 yards.
It was an opening brimming with confidence that belied Southampton's lowly position, although their defensive weaknesses were soon being exposed.
Only the fine reactions of goalkeeper Gazzaniga stopped Ki Sung-yeung breaking the deadlock 20 minutes in, but Garry Monk did well at the other end to stop Puncheon getting a shot away on the counter.
Saints were looking the better of the two sides and Ramirez did well to jink into space and fire just wide in the 26th minute.
Schneiderlin and Williams were booked as the match continued, with the latter penalised for clattering in-flight Ramirez.
The Uruguay international took the resulting free-kick, which caught the Swansea defence on the hop as he floated the ball wide to the unmarked Jose Fonte, whose cutback and shot were both blocked.
Lallana claimed a penalty against Angel Rangel and then scooped a curled right-foot effort as half-time approached.
The Swansea right-back saw a shot deflected behind off Yoshida when play resumed for the second half, before Shaw was caught out for the first time.
The teenager was impressing for Saints but Pablo Hernandez got behind him and cut back, only for Wayne Routledge to place over.
The latter was replaced by former Southampton winger Dyer moments later, before Ramirez twice had shots blocked.
The home side were dominating play but dawdling too often in possession in the final third.
Ramirez failed with an attempted scissor kick and then Lallana was booked for diving when he went down under pressure from Williams.
The home side's intense pressure soon told, though, as Lallana swung a ball in from the left and Rickie Lambert's cushion header was controlled by Schneiderlin.
The French midfielder took the ball on the run and continued to head past Tremmel to give Adkins' side a deserved 64th-minute lead.
Clyne saw a low cross cleared as Southampton pushed for a second, before defensive frailties again cost Adkins' side.
Gazzaniga played the ball out to Yoshida but the Japan international miscontrolled and Dyer latched on to the loose ball and fired home off the post.
The 73rd-minute leveller was met by a muted celebration by the substitute in respect to his former club, who returned the attack desperate for a winner.
Lambert nodded agonisingly wide shortly afterwards and Cork flashed a strike over, before Tremmel caught a tame header by the former.
Referee Andre Marriner waved away Lallana's strong penalty appeals in the 85th minute after going down under pressure from Monk, before Ki saw a shot blocked at the other end and Yoshida cleared a cross with a last-ditch challenge.

I think we played well. We fielded a strong team and we were unfortunate with a silly mistake. Gaston and Punch played well and I was really impressed with Shaw, big future for him. This is by no means a set back, we played VERY well and just need to keep building. There is nothing we can do about the matches which have gone but if we continue to improve and stick together we will be fine. A great game today lads and a massive improvement. IN ADKINS WE TRUST! (1) the Shaman looked excellent at lb. defended well, looked assured going forward and settled Lallana, who looks more confident with shaw support
(2) this was the first game this season whe we never fell behind, says the beeb.
(3) gaston was very tricky, and links well with puncheon, Lallana, spiderman and rickie. Class act.
(4) Clyne and puncheon are forming a great partnership on the right.
(5) guly wasn't even on the bench.
I think Adkins was right to protect shaw for the last 15 mins, because shaw was looking a little less sharp and you need to protect the kids at this level. Shaw cn now look forward to qpr.
Shame that mayuka and ward-Prowse weren't given runs. But the team was playing well right up to the final whistle, nd for mce Nigel didn't sub our best players.
All of this is progress. Bring on qpr.

I was thinking Gaston should come of as he was the most of anybody guilty of giving the ball away in the first half and wasting a couple of very good chances. I was thinking he might still not be match fit, but he turned on the style in the second!! Good move by Adkins not to sub him.
No problems with the Shaw subsititution as he cramped up according to Adkins.
Nice to see Cortese stand up and applaud the manager and the players at the end. He may not say much to the media or give the dreaded backing of support to the manager, but in this case for me actions spoke louder than words.

relegation a virtual certainty.It is just a
question of who will finish bottom -
Saints or QPR.
By the time the Jan window arrives it
will be too late and, lets be realistic,
"star" players will not want to sign for a
team that is going to be relegated.
I have said before no defenders
signed.Why was Buttner not signed?
He wanted to come -there was a problem with a fee to a third party
which we were told was resolved -
but the deal just went dead. The rest

Why no substitutions other than Fox who came on as Shaw was cramping up. Thought Fox did ok. Cork was tiring and Spider / Ramirez not delevering why then leave JWP and Davis on bench when they could have come on and injected some energy into the midfield. The way JWP is being left out now he will clearly following the likes of Bale and the Ox. I hear the big clubs are interested in him. I think NA is frightened to make substitutions as he's been so heavily criticised for past mistakes.

Great support for the team and the manager today, I struggle to see how the BBC called the atmosphere 'subdued', a tad nervy at times maybe but loads of passion. Loads of positives although of course a clean sheet is what we really needed. Can't emphasise enough the difference Cork makes. IMO the best eleven started. All in all a good day not a great day.

Shoukd have been a win against a poor Swansea side!!!!!!
Yoshida is quite powerful and at the top of his game, but weather he is prem quality ?
Fox,clyne,de-prado etc,questions ?
As i have said before SFC have about 5 premiership players, but even then most of the players are bordering on championship v premiership.
It might be harsh but come jan i would look at a new back 4 and keeper,2-3 new men in midfield and 1-2 strikers, basically stripping saints of the current starting 11, and the best that are left will form the bench, hard i know but a reality check.
Today was good a draw was a must, and a win would have been brilliant.

Look...we have experienced b2b promotions...we have strengthened..(ok ok...we are not quite there yet). For me, stability and our infrastructure will be the key, but it will take some time and patience to acheive our goals in the long term. I just hope NC sees it that way.

Swansea were the worst team I've seen so far. Saints did alright because they didn't have to defend. When they did they looked fragile. But, hey ho they went up a place!
Limp on till Jan?
True enough it was a missed opportunity. Without doubt JWP or SD should have replaced Cork late on because his lack of match fitness was showing, certainly seconds before the equaliser went in. At least Michu was kept quiet, and we actually saw some positive wing play down the right. Over the last few seasons people have said that The Championship is not too far behind The Prem in footballing terms; how wrong they were. I'm remaining positive. My comments are born out of

I think Steve Davis should be made

(3) gaston was very tricky, and links well with puncheon, Lallana, spiderman and rickie. Class act.

Guly hasn't had a good game for us at this level, and the only "impact" he's had as a sub has been to cool off our attack when we've been behind.
I appreciate what he did for us in league one as much as the next Saint. But the team moved on. When will you?

Guly hasn't had a good game for us at this level, and the only "impact" he's had as a sub has been to cool off our attack when we've been behind.
I appreciate what he did for us in league one as much as the next Saint. But the team moved on. When will you?
I get it. You don't rate Guly, would you mind changing the record!!
I've never seen anyone fondle a guly so much since Old Doc Lovelace told Smokin' Joe Steelpipe to lay off the old five knuckle shuffle until his sight returned.
Plank.

Like I said, I am not saying Guly should even be on the bench. The players you mentioned are clearly/probably not up for the prem, yet you don't consistently hurl abuse at them time and time again.
Oh well, you do not understand what I am trying to say here. You may as well get back to your Guly bashing, it clearly gives you pleasure.

A poor Swansea team and still we
dropped points.Sorry, this has made
relegation a virtual certainty.It is just a
question of who will finish bottom -
Saints or QPR.
The rest
is history - Sir Alex said " thank you
very much" and signed him up.
I have supported Saints for over 60 years and will continue to do so but
I feel very sad tonight. This really
was the last chance to kick start the
season and the reality is that we failed.

next week is make or break for both saints and qpr.we haven't got a single point away from home this season.that must change.no excuses or hard luck stories. We have got to deliver.qpr haven't won yet this season.that will change but hopefully not against us.not only is our feeble points tally a cause for concern but our massive goals against tally means that the other relegation strugglers have effectively an extra point on us.
So we have to go to qpr and NOT GET BEATEN.
Iwould urge NA to adopt a more defensive formation with 3 centre halves 2 bombing on full/wingbacks and go a la spain in midfield with 5.We clearly have a massive problem with the goalkeeping position.not one of the has kept a clean sheet.i would rotate the keepers each match until one of them actually earns his corn and keeps a clean sheet. the team i would play would be
K.DAVIS
CLYNE,FONTE,JOS,YOSH
IDA,FOX
PUNCH,CORK,MS,G.RAM.
ADAML.
SUBS
BORUC,SHAW,S.DAVIS,J
WP,LAMBERT,MAYUKA,GU
LY.
Cork and Morgan will be the holding midfielders, ramirez will be given a marauding role and be urged to bomb forward at every opportunity.Clyne and Fox too will be instructed to get forward ar every available opportunity.i have chosen fox ahead of shaw because despite all the criticism hurled at him fox is a much better crosser of the ball than shaw.i would save shaw predominantly for home and cup games.Punch ans Adam will be instructed to cut inside and support ramirez whenever clyne and fox take up an attacking position on the flanks.if we go behind and need to chase the game we would have Lambo and Mayuka on the bench so could revert to a 4-4-2.I have chosen GULY as a sub ahead of Jay Rod. because if we are winning and need to hang on at the end i feel that he is the stronger runner in midfield areas plus he can defend a bit if needs be.neither the inclusion of fox or guly will be popular with a lot of the saints doubting thomases but both players need to step up to the plate and should be encouraged rather than ridiculed.COYR
