Adkins focuses on the postives
1:47pm Sunday 11th November 2012 in Sport
Nigel Adkins focused on Southampton's improved performance against Swansea despite yet another defensive mistake costing his side three points.
Saints had the better of proceedings at St Mary's after a week in which the position of the struggling side's manager had come under increasing scrutiny.
Adkins' team responded with character and took the lead 64 minutes in when Morgan Schneiderlin made their dominance count by nodding home from close range.
However, the Premier League's leakiest defence was founding wanting once more as goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga's poor pass to Maya Yoshida was picked off by one-time Southampton academy graduate Nathan Dyer, who punished the hosts.
''I think the supporters, players and everyone is having a go for each other, which is the important thing,'' Adkins said.
''We're together as one. Everyone is having a right go, the performance was good.
''Listen, take the positives. We got a point. We wanted the three and a clean sheet but let's take the positives.
''We got another point on the board. Everyone's together, everyone is working hard.
''We're 11 games into the Barclays Premier League and we're improving all the time.
''We believe we can give all sorts of teams problems going forward, which we've gone and done this season. We've scored goals.
''It is the decision-making process at the back which is the issue. Today was an improvement in respect of the defensive resolve about ourselves.
''Again, the second half against Tottenham, you throw that into the mix. We were on the front foot and dominated that second half.
''There is a lot of good things that we're doing and we'll stick at it and keep working hard.''
Asked if the result had helped reduce the pressure building at the club, Adkins added: ''I think you can see again today that the football club is united and we're determined to be successful here at Southampton.
''We should have had a penalty the other night but didn't get one so at this moment in time things just aren't going are way, but we'll keep working.''
Adkins took his side away for a break in the build-up to the game and shuffled his side around in a bid to take the three points.
Southampton moved up to 19th after a match in which Swansea manager Michael Laudrup was relieved to get a draw.
''I am pleased with a point,'' the Dane said. We knew already before the game that it would be very difficult.
''I think that I said in the press conference on Thursday that we would like to win against Southampton, but they need a win.
''You could really see that. They gave everything in every moment so it was a really difficult game. I think we can be satisfied with going away from here with a point.
''I think we did well in the first half. We did not create much today, to be honest, and in the second half they put us under pressure.''

The reason so many people are behind him is that the game before he took over we lost 0-2 at home to the mighty Rochdale in Division 3. A year before that we almost didn't have a club to support.
We have him to thank that 2 years later we're dissapointed with a draw at home in the PREMIER LEAGUE!
None of us are pretending that everything is fine but Nigel Adkins must be given until Christmas at the very least.

When you consider where we were a few years ago I think it's great to be in the premier league. I will happily scrape staying up knowing how well we will improve next season with a year under our belt. I believe most fans want stability at the club and not the revolving door of the past so Nigel Adkins is the man for me. Given time I believe he could be one of our great managers

There is no getting away from the fact that Saints have had a poor start to life in the premier league. Where do you think blame lies?
a) Adkins (eg. Tactical naivity (too narrow and poor substitutions) and letting Sharpe out on loan)
b) Cortese (eg. He is a mean uncommunicative person who undermines the manager, can't run a business worth toffee, forgets history, treats legends like dirt, alienates the press including our much loved Daily Echo and should be sacked by the Liebherrs.)
c) Some of the Saints Legends (Those who ocasionally snipe at those running the club causing division within the fan base as well as alienating those that run the club)
d) The Liebherrs (eg. Katharina and the rest where are you?? Leadership starts from the top, what is your vision apart from us being part of an estate which will be settled at some point in the furture?)
e) The Daily Echo (eg. Too much influence from ex-players and well known local comedians disgruntled for one reason or other and letting it's own feud with the club interfere with unbiased reporting on the running of the club)
f) The players in general. (There are enough who are not good enough, but there are enough who are who are not stepping up and/or learning from their mistakes)
g) Guly and Fox (They are both S**t. Guly in particular is lazy and also drink drives on the side.)
h) The supporters (those happy clappers who ignore what needs to be done!!!! and the doom an gloomers who run the players, management and team down, and those that boo the players)
g) It's nobody's fault (Life in the Premier League is difficult for promoted sides. We should all take collective responsibility, address what we can and push on!)
Apologise if I have forgotten any other reasons why we might have had a poor start.
There are a lot of interesting opinions on here but we on this site are a very small minority of supporters though it would not achieve much but it could be interesting. I am a tentative f).

No manager stood on the touch line could of done anything about the mistake made by our goalkeeper. If you were there you would of seen most of the defence shouting at Gazza that he should of put his foot through the ball and clear it, usually they just hang their heads and walk back towards the halfway line. They knew that the perfofmance up to that point was much much better and you could see the hurt they were suffering letting in that goal.

I dont know , but would imagine when they look at the video's of Saturdays games the errors are discused. But to keep on about the Negatives ,imo, will not lift the players for the weeks training ahead of the next game. Surely you guys can see the possitives in the game ?? can you not comment on those as well. We as fans knew this was not going to be easy. You dont state weather you want the manager removed ? . Myself i am all for keeping Nigel and can see the steady improvement the team have made. It's a long way from the MAN U , CHELSEA , SPURS AND EVERTONS of this league but that's the standard i believe our club will reach given time.
Yes i am a happy clapper but i can remember where we were before Nigel got on the bus.

Saturday's team was one that really motivated me and other fans that I spoke to. It is almost as though NC and NA went through the DE website posts, went through tapes of Uncle Dave's commentaries and low and behold there it was rightly or wrongly ...... the fans franken-team.
Fans wanted it - here it is.
Rodriguez should not play with Lambert - Done
Guly should be dropped all together - Done
Shaw should start instead of Fox - Done
Ramirez should come in and Cork should come in instead of Davis - Done
Lambert should play the full 90 minutes - Done
- There should be no substitutions which interrupt our ascendancy - Done
For one game at least, there was a definite shift in direction. It is not down to the fans of course, but in this change of direction, "together as one" means more, the result and performance were pretty good and we have every reason to feel optimistic come QPR.

Yes he's been brilliant but you & the rest of the fans know last year our defence was being exposed so yes he's strengthened it but did he go far enough?
I would have loved to see a top rate goalie bought & Fonte got rid of but this never happened.
I believe we needed a tactician/general in midfield but we didn't get one.
I never thought we needed a striker but we got one who made those decisions?
Many people were pro Kelvin Davies yet he punches the ball from defence & cost us at least one goal this season so he had to be replaced even though he saved us in the Championship.
This is why we are calling for Adkins head unless he can pull us out of the bottom three before Christmas

Back int he real world, I know you no longer go to games. That's OK, but what you saw on MOTD did not reflect the intense pressure Swansea were under for long periods. One of their fans walking back to town with me thought they had been extremely fortunate not to be four goals down when the big mistake happened.
So, Adkins seems to be addressing things without all the time-travel malarky that you demand. There's still a way to go but he's on the right track...

I think N/A has worked out that he cant do no wrong ..even if every home game ended in defeat 28000 fans would dance and cheer for him according to his devotees on this site so a draw is a fantastic result.

Saintkenny please don't call me a skate. when we hired Adkins his record was taking a side to the premiership & staying there no matter what he did or so the TV said.
His record was taking a side to the Championship, getting relegated, getting promoted to the Champsionship again and the holding on barely.
I think he'll do better with us (hell, he already has). Jus sayin.

Perhaps we appreciate a manager who has brought us so far so soon.
Also, shipping Billy Sharp off was one of his better decisions. Sharp is simply not good enough for the Premiership.

I also can't imagine losing at home to Brentford in front of only 11,000 and starting to leave with 20 minutes left to play and then 7,000 people booing your own team which technically speaking isn't really yours.
That must be a tad embarrassing even for fish fiddling mongs”
I also can't imagine having a manager who couldn't get away fast enough after getting booed by his own supporters the night before and also having a ground that when spelt backwards says nottarf krap which is kind of apt I suppose.
Even so that must be a tad embarrassing even for inbred wannabe John Westwwod w@nkers who need a good Jimmy Saville seeing to.
I also can't imagine trying to buy your own club with less than 2,000 of the bestest ever greatest most bestest and greatest fans ever TM when most have only pledged the initial £100 but have no intentions of actually paying £1000 as the social won't give it to them.
That must be a tad embarrassing even for the prepubescent fish f@cking tw@ts that post utter sh1te on another teams site because they are such sad little westwood wannabe w@nkers
I also can't imagine losing to the bottom side in league one which would now mean you would soon be bottom when ten points are deducted for cheating and generally being one of the most dishonest and despised football clubs in football.
That must be a tad embarrassing even for a load of plastic cockney inbred chavs, of whom some still post on another clubs site pretending to be fans of that club thinking they are clever but really are showing what a sad bunch of mongs they really are.

Bill Sharp bought for 1.8 mill, 5 months later adios, why buy him in the first place? It's not like he was a regular starter. We had already bought Lee. Jay has potential but doesn't look ready for the Premiership, he should have been blooded slowly. And by the way Do Prado and Punchoen are also not Premiership standard, why not try to get rid of those two?
To me Adkins made SFC's bed in the pre season, if you and the rest want to lie in it, be my guest. If I do a bad job in my profession, I'm out. Because Nigel Adkins is a nice bloke he should be protected?
Our problems this season have been down to bad decisions, not injuries or bad luck. We look out of our depth. West Ham came up through the play offs, they are sixth, why? Good planning & decision making!

Also, shipping Billy Sharp off was one of his better decisions. Sharp is simply not good enough for the Premiership.

There is a lot of positivity and a lot of negativity which goes through this site regarding Saints adventure into the premier league. It might be a good idea, and shed a bit of light on the whole issue if the Daily Echo were to have a poll maybe something like:
Anyways, I love the club. You p-off down the road

Thornhill in your fun poll mark me down as a G. You two boys shake and get back to truely supporting THE BEST TEAM ON THE SOUTH COAST.....THE MIGHTY SAINTS..
As for your poll, Thornhill, you can put me down for a G, as well ....... BUT ...... it's the second G - the final option - which should be an I ...... that is, the one after H (not the one after F if you see what I mean)

Redandy, i have made it clear in these posts that I have my doubts about NA and there may come a time soon where a decision may have to be made as much as I like the guy.
However, at the moment we are n the sh1t, and I feel it is important that we become the 12th man, if by being supportive and being loud we can give 1% extra to the team confidence, then it's worth it. Right now it really needs to be ...together as one.

Saintkenny please don't call me a skate.
when we hired Adkins his record was taking a side to the premiership & staying there no matter what he did or so the TV said.

I think N/A has worked out that he cant do no wrong ..even if every home game ended in defeat 28000 fans would dance and cheer for him according to his devotees on this site so a draw is a fantastic result.
COYRs!!!!!
Perhaps we appreciate a manager who has brought us so far so soon.
Also, shipping Billy Sharp off was one of his better decisions. Sharp is simply not good enough for the Premiership.
Simple mathematics tells us that a team we finished above in the Championship, is much better equipped this year, why?
Throughout the summer, on this very site, you were all, rightly, asking for defenders to be signed. So why is Adkins given a pass for not doing that?
Three goalkeepers in six games, what excuse have you got for that? Lambert on the bench twice, what was the point of that? Hopefully you can enlighten us, as Nigel didn't really answer that question when asked.
There are some Saints fans who treat this as a popularity contest, they like Adkins as a person so there going to round the wagons. We are heading back down, this is not down to bad luck or injuries, it's purely down to bad management!

There is a lot of positivity and a lot of negativity which goes through this site regarding Saints adventure into the premier league. It might be a good idea, and shed a bit of light on the whole issue if the Daily Echo were to have a poll maybe something like:

There is a lot of positivity and a lot of negativity which goes through this site regarding Saints adventure into the premier league. It might be a good idea, and shed a bit of light on the whole issue if the Daily Echo were to have a poll maybe something like:

The responsibility obviously starts from the top and filters right down to the bottom, and hopefully when everything clicks again we will be up and running. I think everyone wants the same thing, achieving it is a different matter. Even the most critical of you must admit we have haven't had a fair rub of the green and there are many nuances that have been responsible for a relatively poor start, it may not stay that way if everyone pulls together and supports the Club 100%. As I said we have all debated for hours how things have to be improved, we are all fairly savy about what went wrong with the lack of signings in the Window, that has to be redressed in the next window, can't do anything at the moment. I don't feel any different to you, about what we as loyal fans desire, on that front we are united, it is just how you go about showing it. I am open to positive debate, I fail to see how groaning and moaning about it can do any good other than you getting it off your chest. You started your post, shouting at me, and the other good posters on here, apart from giving our support we can have no other influence on the eventual outcome.

Perhaps we appreciate a manager who has brought us so far so soon.
Also, shipping Billy Sharp off was one of his better decisions. Sharp is simply not good enough for the Premiership.

After ploughing through this thread to decanter the sensible comments (and occasional decent banter with some of the more intelligent Pompey fans), I dunno whether I can be @rsed to read the next thread. It has 283 comments so far, and I bet the vast majority are made by these WUMs.
I still will though, my support for the lads in red is insurmountable.
