Cork fired up for Premier League safety fight
Jack Cork believes Saints are ready to fire themselves to Premier League safety after a successful team bonding trip.
Manager Nigel Adkins broke the monotony of the training ground last week by taking his squad to the luxury Four Seasons hotel in Hampshire ahead of Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Swansea.
The excursion seemed to do the trick, as Saints turned in one of their best displays of the season with a performance worthy of three points, only to be denied victory by yet another defensive error.
Despite that mistake costing them a much-needed win, Cork believes the trip, which featured a round of clay pigeon shooting, has helped the team refocus on the battle ahead.
“We went to a hotel about an hour away,” said the midfielder, who returned from injury at the weekend to make his first league appearance of the campaign. “We had a bit of training at Aldershot the first day. We went clay pigeon shooting and had a bit of team bonding.
“Punchy (Jason Puncheon) must have cheated because he got the best score. I was alright, I was in his group. He was just a lot better than everyone.
“I’ve done clay pigeon shooting before, but not with such a lot of lads. All the lads loved it. There was a prize. Emmanuel Mayuka lost and he had to be Punchy’s slave – he had to get his dinner for him and stuff like that.”
Cork added: “It was good for the lads to get our heads round it. It gave us another chance to think about tactics and get our heads really on the game, go back to our rooms and get our heads down.”
Saints’ miserable start to the season has left the club languishing in 19th place in the Premier League table after 11 games, which has in turn put strain on manager Nigel Adkins’ position.
The pressure the club are under will only be talked up further this week, as they prepare for a trip to bottom-of-the-table QPR on Saturday.
A loss for either club could have a profound impact, with both Adkins and his counterpart Mark Hughes fighting to save their jobs.
Cork, however, claims the players don’t feel under any pressure.
“We talked about it quite a lot over the last week or so,” he said. “There’s no pressure on us now, we just have to go out there and play how we know we can play.
“Hopefully we can be free, enjoy playing and that’ll lead to some good results.
“We’re down the bottom but I don’t think there’s any pressure on us at the minute. As long as we can keep playing well, hopefully that’ll get us up the table.”
Addressing the speculation surrounding Adkins’ status, Cork added: “We know what’s going on outside, but I think everyone chooses not to listen to it and we get on with our own things.
“If we let what’s going on outside come in and interfere with us it will affect us. Everyone just knows we shouldn’t let it happen.”
Cork, sidelined this season by an ankle injury and then a knee problem, admitted it had been frustrating not being able to play a part in the Premier League campaign before Swansea, when he turned in an excellent display.
“It was horrible,” he said. “After the summer with the Olympics to come back and get an injury and then another injury and having to watch all the lads play in the Premier League after having worked so hard last year for it was horrible. I was fully behind the lads and hopefully I can take my chance now.”

Why does the echo feel the need to say "A loss for either club could have a profound impact, with both Adkins and his counterpart Mark Hughes fighting to save their jobs."? There is no evidence that either manager is fighting to save their job; there only becomes pressure becuase the media says there is. If they would shut the F up, life would be much easier.

So that's cleared that up, then.
But seriously, if true, that statement is another indication of plonkerhood for do Prado. Respect, as everyone who actually warrants it knows too well, is earned, not demanded.

It's good news that the team is getting mentally right for the next run of games. W have the skills in midfield and up front; if we stay calm at the back and don't get psyched out, we can beat qpr away no problem. That is a team with real problems.

At present possible candidates are a bit thin on the ground, but I don't have much faith in Nigel at this level.
I think there's a case to be made that we have some real quality in the middle & up front which we we're not seeing the best of. Maybe a new manager could get the most out of these players. Bally came in & put Matty in the middle of the action, and we saw the results. Who's to say a new system wouldn't pay dividends.

My train of thought is that Nigel, a capable football league manager, isn't ready for the Premiership, yet. I hope I'm wrong, but say things don't turn around, shouldn't we get in a more qualified manager to try and save the club from the drop?
I've seen nearly all the games this season and I've seen little to suggest that we can salvage this season with Nigel. Apart from a brilliant 2nd half display against Villa.
Perhaps they are unbiased, of course. That might explain why they saw a different game from you.
So, I know we only got a point (I was there, you see) but are you seriously suggesting that the performance wasn't better than previous weeks? You said you haven't been to all the games, so I'm not sure if you were there on Saturday. If not, the MOTD coverage didn't reflect the balance of the game. If you were there, you must have been watching with your obvious dislike (see earlier posts) of Adkins switched on.
Be nice to get an serious response but by all means make a joke about sunbeds. Peope will think more of you if you do.

I rate Harry as a manager, but not for this club, too much water under the bridge. The fans would be divided and that is a root cause for further failure. How many games did we lose from winning positions with him at the helm last time? enough to relegate us

The best players would leave, attendances would fall away and Saints could spend donkeys years in the wilderness.
It took LMcM 4 years to climb back and he fell from 5th Position in the First Division not bumping along rock bottom and Saints were the first 3rd from bottom team to be relegated.
Although I have no doubts in my mind that Saints will be trounced on Saturday, 5 games played 5 lost away from home is hardly an encouraging record, Adkins should not be sacked.
Cortese is at the helm, his only efforts to support and help Nigel appear to be signing an over the hill goalkeeper with attitude and paying for a spa jolly.
No thought of strengthening the coaching staff by appointing an experienced respected PL coach to help NA with tactics, training, strategy etc. that requires real thought and leadership.
I wouldn't begrudge Cortese his share of the praise with a JPL trophy and B2B promotions but as any Director of a Company will confirm it is easy to manage in good times but a hell of a lot different in bad.
Like a military campaign, in bad times leaders must show their mettle, lead from the front, help, support and encourage their senior officers and troops, recognise shortcomings and bring in the necessary skills to plug the gaps in knowledge.
General Cortese is like those in WW1 sitting miles away from the frontline --- lions led by donkeys springs to mind.
If nothing changes, very soon, Cortese will give the order, Nigel will be blindfolded, tied to a post and shot.
Supporters are fickle, many will say well NA had his chance, he should have seen it coming, 22% will say thank God he's gone.
I say bring in help for NA now, surely that makes sense? what is there to lose?.
Of course making such a decision requires, insight, wisdom, experience, football knowledge, good man management, courage, the loyalty, support and affection of one's employees.
IMO Cortese has none of these and unless a miracle happens, e.g. our opponents are struck down with dead legs 5 mins after KO, then Nigel will face the firing squad.
There will be only one man to blame.

Those who say that it would be OK to be relegated with NA do not IMO know what they are talking about.
There will be only one man to blame.

ask me the question again because I don't remember you asking me one.
The reason I say about our history over the last fifty years is because it encompasses our lifetimes generally, (some more, some less)
You insist on an all time history because you know that long before most Skates time, and certainly before my time, Pompey had a club, just like Glossop NE!
The reality is we don't know the all time history anyway, only recorded history so let's stick to what we know and experience.
So.... I've been going to watch Saints since the 60's and in all that time, in all my life, bar our recent blip, Saints have been the bigger, better supported and higher achievers on the South Coast.
I don't have to harp on about times before I was born!

I hope you do survive. For the long term supporter of a Football Club it is a desperate and very sad situation and no doubt the frustration of not being able to do anything about it and staring at oblivion in the face is sickening.
We know-- We've been there!
For me, for what it's worth, there is only one true rival and no one else will do!
I take your banter as humourous and enjoy it, as it should be, but it's no use taking it too seriously and venting your frustrations here.

Those who say that it would be OK to be relegated with NA do not IMO know what they are talking about.

I, like many others, am glad that Corky is back, certainly adds a little bit of extra cover for the back four.
At the end of the day, whatever happens, we all must thank Nigel Adkins for the job he's done and I hope he continues to be the Southampton manager for a long time to come, if we get relegated, so be it, we have stability now and thats key.

Yes because by 'diving' he has cost local companies and other creditors an awful lot of money.

2nd half in the Villa game we were carving them up. Not just short passes but some great direct stuff. Villa were poor but still we played some great stuff. At home against Swansea, that should be the bench mark.

2nd half in the Villa game we were carving them up. Not just short passes but some great direct stuff. Villa were poor but still we played some great stuff. At home against Swansea, that should be the bench mark.

This really has made me smile this morning in the article about Wilfired Zaha in the national sport section.
He said: "Last season Guly do Prado at Southampton grabbed me and said 'Respect me'. I'm thinking, 'I don't know you, I don't care who you are, so why should I?'
So that's cleared that up, then.
But seriously, if true, that statement is another indication of plonkerhood for do Prado. Respect, as everyone who actually warrants it knows too well, is earned, not demanded.

I bet they all had a great time as they all sat around rubbing in Adkins special formula of fake tan into each other, great team bonding I wonder how many internal team partnerships started on this trip, anyway come on the hoops QPR win me thinks 2-0 and scum back to bottom. play up pompey

Those who say that it would be OK to be relegated with NA do not IMO know what they are talking about.
Hppe someone takes notice

I don't care what the fans really think, it's the players, and that will be evident in their performances. I think we will get a result against qpr, but if not and depending on performance he'll be either still hanging in the balance or gone

The figure now stands at £136.5 million, up from £110.6 million on the previous year.
The Whites' parent company, Burnden Leisure, has recouped a considerable amount from the transfers of Gary Cahill, Ali Al Habsi and Matt Taylor but has been hit hard by a huge reduction in television revenue and gate receipts since the club’s relegation.
Owner Eddie Davies has moved to re-finance monies owed to him by the club into a long-term loan allowing them to repay the figure over a period of between two and 10 years.
Commenting on the figures, chairman Phil Gartside told The Bolton News: "We continue to face a tough economic climate, but we have continued to invest across the business, and for the second year we have reduced our losses.
"Key to this set of figures is the fact Eddie Davies has converted his investment in our club from short-term to long-term debt.
"It is a huge vote of confidence and underlines the on-going support and commitment he has for our club."

If you were to go on the Portsmouth News site there are very few Pompey fans making comments about their manager or players.
Is that because they do not actually have a manager and none of the players will be around for longer than a month?
How can they boast about a history that includes going broke three times and generally being considered a thoroughly dishonest club?
Just wondered.

Saints by sheer luck, by other teams losing, the odd freak goal etc. may just avoid the drop but would any sensible Director trust the future of his business to luck?
NC has a JPL trophy and two B2B promotions. to his credit and I do not begrudge him his share of the limelight.
True NC has known success, anyone can manage success, it is when the going gets tough that directors rally earn their corn and show their true character.
Jointly, by their failure to recognise the obvious fact that the PL is a world apart from the rest of the leagues, both NC and NA failed to strengthen the squad in the close season.
I will forgive them that, after all there was and still is, no one at SMS with PL experience to advise them.
NC's total football knowledge together with NA's knowledge of PL quality football, could be written on the back of a postage stamp with room to spare.
What I can't understand is NC's reluctance to bring someone in to help NA --- the iceberg is in sight -- NC has the where-with-all to appoint a navigator to help NA avoid it -- and yet he won't!!
NC's solution appears to be --- we may be lucky enough to miss the iceberg but if we don't, I'll fire the Captain and appoint a new one -- maybe he will just save us from sinking -- but if he doesn't --- I've got a nice parachute pot of money to look forward to.
That, my friends, is the mind set of a bean counter --- as the Bible says --- a little child shall lead us!!

Which after the scare we had three years ago is key. But if we do fall how easy will it be to return. Will the then manager be given the kind of resources that were afforded to Nigel? My train of thought is that Nigel, a capable football league manager, isn't ready for the Premiership, yet. I hope I'm wrong, but say things don't turn around, shouldn't we get in a more qualified manager to try and save the club from the drop? I've seen nearly all the games this season and I've seen little to suggest that we can salvage this season with Nigel. Apart from a brilliant 2nd half display against Villa.
Frankly with every game that passes from here on out, we are bound to Nigel ever more, for better or worse.
I still rate him, and I would like to see him in charge for the next ten years. BUT I do insist that he grows in his job and steps up, which he has shown he can do with our last three games.
So if Nigel keeps developing, I'm with him all the way. Even if that means down this year, and then another fight for coming up again.
Realistically, even mourinho couldn't save us if we still have five points at the end of November.

Those who say that it would be OK to be relegated with NA do not IMO know what they are talking about.
Hppe someone takes notice

I will never tire of making the point that if an employee is struggling to successfully do his job, particularly someone like NA, who has previously given excellent service, the first thing any decent boss would do is to find ways and means of helping him.
Firing him would be the last resort for a good boss, in fact if that action did become inevitable a good boss would consider he himself has failed and would shoulder most of the blame.
From what I've seen and read, the only support Cortese has given NA is to sign an unfit, over the hill goalkeeper with a chip on his shoulder and pay for a spa jolly.
The suggestions here range from sacking NA immediately to staying with him for ever, even if he takes us down to the Hampshire League, both are equally ridiculous.
Anyone who doesn't realise NA is out of his depth must have their head in the sand, sadly for Saints, that also seems to apply to Cortese.
At least my suggestion of bringing in an experienced PL coach as No2 to
Adkins, to help him find his feet, is something positive we have every thing to gain and nothing to lose --- even if it fails and results don't get any better (they can hardly get any worse) what have we lost?
If all fails and Cortese sacks Nigel at least consciences (if Cortese has one)will be easier, in the knowledge that despite giving NA the best possible help and every chance to establish himself and Saints in the PL, he was simply not up to it and he leaves with our best wishes.
By his inaction Cortese is showing contempt for Nigel and the supporters in the same way as his contempt for the Echo, Sun, Mail, programmes sellers, corporate seat holders, MLT etc.ad infinitum.

It goes on to explain the rational behind the reshuffle. Also regarding Cortese the story quotes:
"After raising their concerns, chairman Nicola Cortese informed table-holders they would be allowed to remain in the lounge."
"One corporate ticket holder, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “We were shocked and disappointed with the club’s attitude at one point, but relieved that common sense prevailed. We are grateful to Mr Cortese for sorting it out.”
Sounds like Cortese intervened in whatever was going on and sorted it out. You continue to be prove quite full of sh@t.

Cortese may have to do nothing to save the Saints from relegation.

The FL let us down by not investigating him. Ramirez must be 35-40k. If you really want to stay up - your owners, that the Owners may decide to pay some more chaps on big money - and thats how the wages go up. Speculating to accumulate. But it would be your Owners decision- and not the fans! I am right therre aren't I? The fans will be bailing out our club from the crooks. The business fans got robbed by the crooks. It took a fan to investigate all the BS and publish it - and he was watching his back, and checking under his car in the mornings when it all came out. You do need to remember these things. Anyway - I hope you enjoy the QPR game this weekend. I would say it would be your clubs biggest game for some while.More Glory wrote:simple they have not .and we dont have a owner only wanting to get in to get his 19 million back he was promised.he would get when he sold the club on .he was just conned like so many by your club, why did your club pay wages that you could not afford putting you in real trouble.60. to 70.000 a week .35000 for a player playing in the champioship plus oap kanu .our club is not debt ridden and wont be even if we suffer relagation .as we have a wage budget .as we did having a 15000 stadium in the premier league .you just could not do it without cheating could you.so we dont need loans we own are own stadium training ground have assets do you ?????saintkenny wrote:Sorry Ken, but your'e not as entertaining as Shelia. Yes we all know about your local little cricket club looting Hampshire County council, and why are you always on about 50 years - you didnt answer this question the other day. You guys are going all historical; sound familiar? OHOHOHOHOH. I think your Ha's are really quite madMore Glory wrote:Why don't you come along and find out for yourself Gloria! It'll be a strange experience for you, all things new! For a start the ground will be full (not 40% empty--i love that stat!!) You can watch some proper football in nice surroundings! People dont leave with 20 mins to go and we don't boo off our team at the end! It's Real footie and not the dross you've been served up for a generation! As a bonus you can leave the game knowing that the players, bills and employees, have all been paid and that additional funds go into the local community You should try it! First thing - very excited, cant wait to start, then a little bit of action and the whole thing just starts to droop - your season so far. I think you will need some Viagra if you cant beat QPR - ie taking the required medication - a new assistant coach to keep you going for the duration, or a really attractive new model to watch to keep it up for the season,More Glory wrote: "Punchy (Jason Puncheon) must have cheated because he got the best score. I was alright, I was in his group. He was just a lot better than everyone". So two saints players cheating as Cork kept quiet about it. Who'd have thought it - Southampton - cheating. Almost as bad as the fans cheating with that low level noise output. Outrageous!Morning Glory, is that coded for LARGE erection in the morning? (You wish!!!) Who’d have thought, a skunt continuously fantasising on here about the Saints. Low level noise output? Wake up and smell the Farton coffee skunt, you’re going limp at a crucial time.
He conned his way into the club by allegedly putting down a debebture which has never been verified. This was done in the British Virgin Isles which won't be checked by the FL or proably anyone else. We have to pay him the value of the ground which he hasn't paid for at all - aprt from paying some wages last year. Its a con - nothing more. It must be difficult to keep up with it at this end - but the whole thing is BS. So the fans will be paying for something that was given to them by the local council many years ago which BC has aquired by a pack of lies.
Anyway. Ramirez is not on 30-35k a week then? and 30 million hasn't been loaned from the Cayman Isles. Are you sure about that?
