Midfield duo key to Saints' Premier League survival

Morgan Schneiderlin Morgan Schneiderlin

Nigel Adkins believes Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin have the potential to be a central midfield powerhouse pairing for Saints.

Cork’s return to the team after injury has resulted in four points from the last two games as Saints start to show the kind of form that could drag them to Premier League safety.

It should hardly be surprising when you consider that Cork has lost just 11 of the 52 games he has started since making a permanent move to the club from Chelsea just over a year ago. More than that, Adkins (pictured left) has been desperate to pair Cork and Schneiderlin together in a new look Continued: Page 37 midfield that sees the 23-year-olds sitting in front of the back four.

With Cork’s energy and dynamism and Schneiderlin’s fantastic passing ability they look every inch a Premier League partnership.

“He (Cork) was yet again outstanding – him and Morgan Schneiderlin together,” raved Adkins.

“I played Jack Cork in every game after I signed him last season.

“He was called up for the Great Britain team for the Olympics which is a great honour obviously but we didn’t have him for pre-season.

“He came back and in his first game he got injured, he came back after that and got injured straightaway in his comeback game.

“We’ve not had an opportunity to have Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin together until now.

“They are two young 23-year-olds who I believe have got so much potential and we can get a good partnership going with them.“We also have young James Ward-Prowse who is going to be phenomenal for us and Steven Davis we have brought in and is still very young in footballling terms but has a wealth of experience he can help the players with.”

Schneiderlin and Cork also have enviable statistics in games they have started together over the past season and a bit.

In that time they have been on the losing side on just six out of 21 occasions.

The partnership between Cork and Morgan is the most important thing for the team this year. They're the engine room that will buffer the defence and give the forwards freedom to play.

It's funny because Anglo-French partnerships don't always work but when they do the results can be spectacular. Think of Concorde, the Channel Tunnel, Stereolab and, er, my dad who swears blind he had a go on Bridget Bardot back in the 60s before she went mental.

We are so luck to have this management and great young squad of players.
Incredible setup at SMS and great training facilities.
I go to watch my team always with great pride of knowing they are at the pinnicle of south coast football.

Where did all the previous comments go? Ah well, no loss.

All I have to say is that I think Jack Cork is a large part of the reason why the performance in the last two games has been so much better; good defensive cover from the midfield was always lacking.

He's very low key; easy to miss his contribution, so well done to the management team for seeing it and sticking with him.

Yes, but you have to think of these as well:

- JK Rowling's grandparents.
- Mary Tudor and Louis XII (he died because they tried too hard - and failed - to produce an heir).
- Strassie and the French administration, French opening hours, all French drivers, most French waiters (but the waitresses are forgiven) and nearly every French shop assistant (male & female).

How's little Retford? Did he score with any of the wonderful NHS nurses?

Little Retford's on the mend, cheers. He's still got all types of liquid coming out of both ends but the main thing is he's out of hospital and his mum is dealing with that while I'm at work.

As for Anglo-French relations, let's not forget how during the war we united to help crush those bad prats (and the Nazis WERE prats) to the East. Southampton are learning the lessons of history well.

I have to be honest and say on a few occasions last season that I didn't think JC bought much to team at times. But his absence and subsequent return to the first team has certainly shown me that he brings a lot to the team with his style of play. He has taken pressure of the defenders and also MS who has 1 goal and an assist in 2 games. Keep up the goodwork and I do believe they may become 2 of the best midfielders in th BPL.

which brings back a number of personal memories for me - we lost my Granddad on the Normandy beaches....... he turned up later at the tourist information centre - he said been looking for an ice-cream..... but we were very anxious for a while. In the early 70s my Dad had a passionate correspondence with Catherine Deneuve (although she used the nom de plume "Madge" and seemed to write to him mostly from her (I presume) holiday home in Freemantle. Which brings me back to Morgan Schneider Trophy (a nice combination of engines if ever there was one) and Jacques Bouchon. What a combination! I think that with those two as a solid platform to bolster the defence and from which to launch wave after wave of assaults on the enemy positions, we won't need to send reinforcements to from Southampton to Harfleur nor sew up those breeches with our English thread or was it throw up them leeches in Tracey Ermin's bed? I agree with you regarding last season - I had the same opinion - but I've come to see it as blindness on my behalf. I think it comes down to his not being particularly flamboyant. He's very hard to notice on the pitch as he just gets on with his job unobtrusively and very effectively.

So, I've totally changed my opinion of him; I see him as a pretty key player now and I think he's terrific in partnership with Spiderman.

I don't.

The thing with players like Corky and Spider is that you don't really notice how good they are until they're not in the team. When Spider got injured this season we turned to absolute crud. I think our revival has been sparked firstly by getting him back and then by getting Cork back.

Now it's game on. I actually feel sorry for the rest of the league.

You make a good point.

However, the problem with the Saints is that we are very vulnerable defensively and once the ball is in our box it generally goes in the net.

Attack is the best form of defense. We need one man in D/CM to protect the defense and also allow the other two midfielders (Gaston and Cork) to move forward, either getting it to a lone striker (Rickie) or getting it on the wings to Lallana or Puncheon.

For this job to protect the defense and allow the other two to get forward by getting it out to them (without "Route 1"), I think Davis is more effective at that job than Schneiderlin.

I thought Davis was meant to be a creative midfielder with a decent range of passing, sort of in the Paul Scholes mould.

I've not seen an awful lot of that so far, although this might just be because we've spent quite a lot of time on the back foot.

Either way, it's great to have someone of SD quality to come in and cover when we have injuries/suspensions
, or an impact off the bench like Saturday. Morgan is on his 4th yellow so no doubt SD will get his chance to show he should start alongside JC. It's great to have this kind of competition for a starting place!

Does Rickie need to play with a stiker alongside him, do we think? I'm undecided.

I reckon that with Ramirez sitting just behind him and with Lals and Punch cutting in from the wings there should be plenty of service, but is anyone else clinical enough to take the chances that don't fall to Rickie? (I don't know btw...)

Maybe he means Stuka, or even a Stoker. Rickie does lack a bit of pace, and needs to rough up the opposition a bit more with underhand Stoking techniques.

I'm not convinced by Davis yet. He has his moments but I'm not sure he adds much we didn't already have.

Time will tell, hope i'm wrong.
Schneiderlin is fantastic, I am not arguing against that, but I feel that Davis could be more effective for the job we need.
What are Davis's strengths?

I'm not being silly I'm just not sure. Is it tackling and defensive cover? Is it passing? Is it playmaker? I understand the role of the others but not fully worked his out yet.
the thing is his he any better than dean hammond .and we sent him out on loan .so far he has given no more to the team then dean did ,maybe we could of kept dean and signed a left back .which would of made more sense
I've come to the conclusion that there just aren't that many amazing left backs around. There are certainly none available for under, say, £3m who are any better than Shaw will be in a month or two. Maybe it just wasn't worth spaffing a load of money at a position where we're going to be fine in any event?

We are pretty much there up top too. Although do others have question marks over JRod? I'd like to see Mayuka (is that his name?) and Tad Lee used for their pace from time to time.

I think J Rod, Tadanari Lee and Mayuka will need to be patient and be prepared to wait for their moments as long as Rickie, Gaston and Punchy and Lallana are fit. They'll be first choice if they can keep performing in the settled side which now seems to be evolving.
Let's hope for another 3 points against the Toon and then we can see if we are now beginning to get a foothold in the league and hopefully climb the table.

Congrats on your ability to talk footy today. Here's a little challenge for you:

Talking of recent times, how many of your players could seriously challenge to get in a South Coast - Last decade team?

James
De Zeeuw Campbell
Johnson Hreidarsson
Diarra Muntari
Stone Taylor
Yakubu Defoe

Subs - Hislop, Distin, Berger, Boateng, Sheringham

Be honest!

Only 2-4 years there.

Really! Still I guess that's what raw emotions do. I do remember one of your teams finished in 12th a few years back. I would think that team would turn your current lot over.

Big big week for your club over the next week - could define your season. My guess is that 2 straight wins could give you a chance of finishing in the top15

Yes, it is well known that the French played a pivotal part in WWII, Petain being their best general on the field against the nazis...
Also, let's not forget that they helped decorate London with a lot of commemorative monuments to the Napoleonic wars.

Yeah I agree that they need to be patient but I also feel that J Rod has had a lot more of a crack at the whip than Mayuka and Lee but hasn’t taken it. I really believe the later two have some real quality to offer but as said, they’re gonna have to be patient and when they do get the chance, grab it with both hands.

Davis plays best as a holding midfielder (or as you say tackling and defensive cover) but is also good at passing the ball out and moving forward, controlling it and getting it forward on the ground, making defense from attack. These jobs together make him a very good player.

COYR
Exactly - the last thing I want to do is knock SD because we'll rely on him in some pretty big games this year, but my first two would always be Cork next to Spider.
Well, I just wanted to show my total lack of football knowledge by saying that I do miss Chaplow. I think he was fantastic and with a better defensive rate than anyone. When he was on form we were destroying everyone last year. As soon as he was missing we were so-so.
As I said, maybe I am just speaking out of gratitude for what he did last year, but I think we should not rule him out.

The truth is that what pushed Hitler to kill himself was actually knowing that, after dealing with the 8 million crazy Russians at the front gate of his bunker, he still would have to face "La Resistance"... and that was clearly too much for him!

Yes, it is well known that the French played a pivotal part in WWII, Petain being their best general on the field against the nazis...
Also, let's not forget that they helped decorate London with a lot of commemorative monuments to the Napoleonic wars.
I mean the COOL French people. You know, people like Albert Camus who joined up to the resistance and then tunneled into the swimming pool to try and rescue the allies at half time in Escape To Victory. They were mint.
Sorry, I didn't know you were referring to a 5% of their population!!!
;)
5%? Do me a favour. I've SEEN 'Allo 'Allo and I can tell you that pretty much every Franch person (other than fat blokes who ran cafes and just wanted a quiet life) was in the resistance and fought bravely for their freedom. You can't argue with documentary evidence.
OK, you got me there. I don't have access to highly specialised research material for historians.
The truth is that what pushed Hitler to kill himself was actually knowing that, after dealing with the 8 million crazy Russians at the front gate of his bunker, he still would have to face "La Resistance"... and that was clearly too much for him!
To be fair, pretty much any BBC comedy from the 80s could be used as an instrument of warfare, although I'm not sure how you'd square it with the Geneva Convention.

I mean, Israel might be bombing the living daylights out of Gaza but you'd see the public's sympathies turn against the Palestinians pretty quickly if they retaliated by blasting out episodes of 'Keeping Up Appearances' at targets in Tel Aviv. I think the use of 'Birds Of A Feather' in a combat scenario officially constitutes a war crime. And rightly so.

Probably the Israelis are just trying to "selectively" destroy a stash of such films considering them weapons of mass destruction. It is possible that Hamas was trying to smuggle them to Iran and one thing is to have nuclear weapons and the other... wait a second... weren't we discussing football?... how the hell did we end up here??!

well It could have been worse,It could have been roy cropper.....( corrie )

I think J Rod, Tadanari Lee and Mayuka will need to be patient and be prepared to wait for their moments as long as Rickie, Gaston and Punchy and Lallana are fit. They'll be first choice if they can keep performing in the settled side which now seems to be evolving. Let's hope for another 3 points against the Toon and then we can see if we are now beginning to get a foothold in the league and hopefully climb the table.
agree all the way to 3 points sunday
Yeah I agree that they need to be patient but I also feel that J Rod has had a lot more of a crack at the whip than Mayuka and Lee but hasn’t taken it. I really believe the later two have some real quality to offer but as said, they’re gonna have to be patient and when they do get the chance, grab it with both hands.
I feel the same about J Rod. He seemed to come in with so much hope, sounded the part, looked the part, then totally and utterly underperformed.

Whether it was the fact that he was being asked to play out of his normal position, I simply don't know. His head went down and he seemed to lose his confidence.

However, he does need to pick himself up and push more now that we have so many attacking options (and an attack that seems to be back working). If he doesn't, he'll be in the doldrums forever. If he does, he's obviously capable and should shine through. I think the problem's all in his head, so it's his choice.

OK. As we are talking footy.

Fair point. I would take Bridge over Hreiderssan.
I would probably put Pahars slightly ahead of Boateng - but only slightly - as he did go to Milan straight after. Defoe's goal to game ratio at Pompey was 1 in 2 - so no comparison - and he he was an England regular during his time at Pompey.
I think Niemi was a good goalie, but even Hislop lasted 10 years at the top and was great at Newcastle. But Niemi was v good at Saints, so maybe he could make the bench.
Bale, Walcott and Oxy were all up and coming at your club before they left, but maybe Bale could edge Berger out - but only maybe - as Berger was class - but fading.
Sheringham had only just stopped playing for England when he came to Pompey - so Lambert is not getting a look in.

So, here we are. I am sure you will disagree though

Breaking news.
I have received details of an advert soon to be placed in free ads.
Sits Vac.
Small south coast L1 club invites application for a new manager. The position offers potential to experience a different league every year. Following recent relegations from Premiership and Championship we fully expect to be playing L2 next season and Conference the year after. The applicant should be fully able to operate in the shadow of it's wealthy and successful neighbour with it's Premiership status and numerous international players. Ability to work with a fully disfunctional side consisting of youth, failed professionals, journe
ymen and just plain donkeys is essential. An attractive package is available. The selected individual will be given the benefit of a one week rolling contract. This will be paid weekly in advance to ensure payment is made and will be at or near the government minimum wage. Illegal immigrants are welcome to apply at a lower rate but with the benefit of cash in hand payments if the gate money is high enough. Travellers are also very welcome to apply. Additional benefits would include free parking of your caravans on land adjacent to the ground on land we are hoping to acquire soon. Free grazing is available on our cabbage patch of a pitch for your horses. For those of you with donkeys we should be able to fit them seamlessly into our current squad alongside the existing ones. Ablilty to deal with a fully delusional fanbase would also be useful. Quiet periods would be provided by the club. These would normally be during the last 10 minutes of games when the blue few have tired of booing their team and gone home. This situation should improve over the coming seasons as we are planning to make our strip a darker blue.. This will automatically transform the blue few into the bluer fewer. No applications will be entertained from present or former employees mof the Inland Revenue.

I was half way through an English lesson by phone, discussing women's emancipation during the 1920s (the student's choice, not mine) when I got a bit bored and scanned through the thread to pass the time. There is, of course, nothing funny about the bombing of Gaza, but when I stopped and read this one, Retford. I was nearly doubled up.

It ruined my understanding of the role the First World War played in the liberation of la femme moderne françaises. Guess I'll just have to check it out on Wiki.fr

Seriously St. Retford? The last thing we need is an American in goal whose only point of reference is Captain Robert Hatch, played by their premier thespian Sylvester Stallone in "Escape To Victory".
Hatch (Sly):Where do I stand for a corner kick?
Capt. John Colby (Caine): At the far post, facing the ball.
Hatch: Thanks. For a while there I thought you were keeping it a secret.

Capt. Colby, the thinking man's 'Arry Redknapp.

What do you mean, “stick with” 442? We have ditched it recently and look much the better for it. Don’t think that you can start with 442 in the Premier League, certainly not with our back five. Playing with one up front, 4411 or 451 – however you like to read it – we look a much better balanced side and provide more cover down the flanks and in front of the back four. In Lambert’s absence, J Rod and perhaps Guly can play the up front role where the key requisites are ability to get on the end of crosses, hold the ball up and lay it off. Certainly not Mayuka (too small and not strong enough to hold it up with his back to goal) and probably not Lee (similar shortcomings but not so pronounced).

Ramirez is obviously the best in the hole but Lallana can play there too, as can probably the much improved Puncheon. But these two give us great attacking options on the flanks, going wide or cutting in. Morgan and Cork holding and box to box (alternating at times but prefer Morgan deeper) every time for me. Davis and JWP are strong replacements, however.

Spoke to 3 blokes today who were at the QPR game but not together.
They all made the same point first.
Cork is the reason for the change in fortunes.
their second point was different.
Puncheon was greedy but good.
Lallana made more effort to help Shaw than he did Fox.
Yoshida so nearly scored an overhead kick and was dependable in defence.
All these points were eye witness and not due to the prompting of MOTD.
All of them were also impressed with the fact that when QPR pulled one back Saints just steamrollered on exactly as they had before the goal.
Their opinion was that Fox coming on was because we expected a push from QPR and experience would be needed, it did not happen and Fox was able to attack more than defend.
There have been comments that QPR were rubbish and we can only beat teams that are sh!t...good, just need to find one more team like that and we finish 17th at the end of the season.
I think though that a win was what was needed and will give some confidence to improve further.
Support the Saints, I do.

To me he's the Lambert replacement be in through injury or in the 75th minute when he tires. I don't think he was bought for the development squad, I think he was bought for the main squad which is a Prem squad.

If we play two upfront I'd expect to see Lambert or JRod and Mayuka or Tad Lee to bring the essential ingredient of pace.

He has had reasonable game time and doesn't seemed to have grabbed his opportunity. If I was Mayuka I'd be a bit miffed.

i think he'll come good , i really do . (j rod that is)
I hope so,he's obviously got the talent but if you parade as a £7m player the expectations are naturally high.

Exactly! We spent 7 million, surly it's too early to write him off. The Premiership is a completely different proposition to the Football league. Anyone expecting him to make the step up and adapt immediately are living in a fantasy land.
I understand what you're saying and, as I said, I think he had the attitude and talent when he arrived. I just worry that his head's down now (perhaps he was expecting to adapt a bit quicker than he was able to, I don't know) He hasn't looked like he's enjoying it; that's the worry for me.

Hopefully he'll be able to lift himself mentally and get back to showing us the talent he quite clearly has.
I'm curious as to where Jay figures in Nigel's plans. If you're right & he has become despondent, we'll lose money on him. As you say, hopefully he'll be able to lift himself.

Ok, what odds on the time of the exodus? Well if you can have an 'exodus' with so few there. I'll have £1000 on 63rd minute, I think they might hang about longer tonight due to new manager.

You can't provoke someone who isn't here. If they are here well they shouldn't be so it doesn't matter.

BOOOOOOOOOO!

How can they boo the manager who they all wanted and hasn't been there 5 minutes? Appy left the day after being booed.

Anyone heard the gate yet? Has it dropped or are they holding firm at the magnificent 11000?

To be fair in league 1 you do expect the fair weathers to drop away. Embarrassing as it is we must admit our gates dropped to 22000 in that league.

as i said up there somewhere ........ i DO believe we've turned a corner and am as optimistic as ever . COYR
The QPR game showed how good we are going forward. They were poor so our frailties weren't tested. The Toons will test us, we need no silly mistakes which will be the first time this season if we do!
hopefully we will beat The Toons , I will settle for a 3-2 win... the same score that Leyton Orient won by this evening...

He lives in Spain and probably didn't even know that there was a game on.

He is also a Poopepeyep supporter and didn't understand that it was really really good fun. not something the bluefew know much about not having had much fun for the last few years, unlike us.
And of course it is well known that to be a bluefewer you have to be totally without humour.

I can't imagine being dumped out of 3 cup competitions at home to teams like Notts County and Wycombe Wanderers.
No disrespect to NC and WW but it must be a tad embarrassing.”
I also can't imagine having a run down sh1te hole for a ground and pathetic attendances or having to beg steal and borrow other cubs players each month.
That must also be a tad embarrassing””
I also can't imagine losing at home to Brentford in front of only 11,000 and starting to leave with 20 minutes left to play and then 7,000 people booing your own team which technically speaking isn't really yours.
That must be a tad embarrassing even for fish fiddling mongs”
I also can't imagine having a manager who couldn't get away fast enough after getting booed by his own supporters the night before and also having a ground that when spelt backwards says nottarf krap which is kind of apt I suppose.
Even so that must be a tad embarrassing even for inbred wannabe John Westwwod w@nkers who need a good Jimmy Saville seeing to.
I also can't imagine trying to buy your own club with less than 2,000 of the bestest ever greatest most bestest and greatest fans ever TM when most have only pledged the initial £100 but have no intentions of actually paying £1000 as the social won't give it to them.
That must be a tad embarrassing even for the prepubescent fish f@cking tw@ts that post utter sh1te on another teams site because they are such sad little westwood wannabe w@nkers
I also can't imagine losing to the bottom side in league one which would now mean you would soon be bottom when ten points are deducted for cheating and generally being one of the most dishonest and despised football clubs in football.
That must be a tad embarrassing even for a load of plastic cockney inbred chavs, of whom some still post on another clubs site pretending to be fans of that club thinking they are clever but really are showing what a sad bunch of mongs they really are.”
I also can't imagine being a sad fish fiddling pr1ck wanting to spend so much time spewing out the same old boring and childish load sh1te about a bigger and richer club with a bright future rather than wallowing in the demise and slow death of your own p1ss poor little club on your own site.
That must be a tad embarrassing.
I also can't imagine losing at home yet again and six games in a row in league one when your superior neighbours have just given QPR a footballing lesson and now picked up 4 points from 6 which is a bit better than 0 points from 18.
That must be a tad embarrassing which would explain why the spineless fish worrying skunts aren't playing tonight and are all indoors with their westwood wannabe jim- jams on but not blowing their plastic trumpets.......sssh, sssh”
I also can't imagine losing 7 (seven) games on the bounce and only having about 9,000 of the bestest ever best most bestest and greatest best fans ever TM at a home game booing at the start and at half time and at the end of the game.
That must be a tad embarrassing......SK

Davis and JWP are strong replacements, however.
we were playing 4 4 3 for weeks ,far to narrow ,now we have cork back we can play with 2 in the middle .or all the other formations i agree with that .its the 4 3 3 i had issues with ,as nigel siad he wanted to play that ,to narrow for me exposing the flanks, partically the left

There are other teams on the South you already know, Seed, that could only dream of being rivals.

I reckon a shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh in French must be masculine, so it's Le shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. However, I reckon it becomes feminine when expressed with anger and impatience, so -
LA SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!
!!!!!

As a verb (to shh), I reckon it would be shhre and be conjugated like this:
Je shhais
Tu shhais
Il shhait
Nous shhaisons
Vous shhaites
Ils shhont.

So, 'les mushes shhont et les skunts disparaissent'.

Or, in the past, 'les mushes ont shhrait et les skunts ont disparu.'

south today sports section reported the table tennis 1st and then reported poopeys 7th loss in a row
mind you they don't boo table tennis players and stay till the end so obviously more entertaining than watching poopey

Davis and JWP are strong replacements, however.
we were playing 4 4 3 for weeks ,far to narrow ,now we have cork back we can play with 2 in the middle .or all the other formations i agree with that .its the 4 3 3 i had issues with ,as nigel siad he wanted to play that ,to narrow for me exposing the flanks, partically the left
443 equals too many players on the pitch but I get your point if you mean 433 being too narrow. Merrington's tiresome response was that we should go 442 - outdated and awful.

4 4 2 is not awfull if go have 2 good midfielders class like arsenal did with vierra they played 4 4 2 and won the league never lost a game .its where a lot of teams play 3 in european football .years back teams played a sweeper .like when the saints came 2nd in the league,4 4 2 is ok for us .it has been used mainley last 2 seasons ,what you need is a striker who can switch to midfield and combine the roles .like hoddle did here with pahars.aslong as you get the balance right on the flanks you can use either formation ,but we started using the 4 3 3 when we dont have the defensive set up for it .but cork coming has given the defense a bit more protection .and the players seem to know what there roles are .been a great improvement since the swansea game,we just need a bit of consistancy especially at home .and it could set up for a good points tally by boxing day half way .to set up for next half, and what we may need to do in the transfer window

Things must be bad when censorship creeps in, but it is really not surprising that we attract silly skate WUMs on here, when their own site is being bombarded by so called Saints posters. I am not one for kicking people when they are down and I see no fun in this behaviour, I am all for rivalry and banter but some of these posters are over stepping the mark. It's time to step back, and remember, that it is not all that long ago we were in the same boat, and on the receiving end, where has it got those that came on hear slagging us off? What goes around, comes around, be careful what you wish for.

Yes, I agree games are getting too far apart, there is no continuity for the players, we have started to get our act together and are losing momentum through the gaps between games. Next week is slightly different with a Sunday / Wednesday combination, I just hope we can cash in and get those valuable points in the bag.

I'm a peaceful guy and like to avoid confrontation. You will recall I brokered a truce between BHA and us.

I have posted on the skunt site but only in support of the PST and encouraging them to put their hands in their pockets and get rid of the crooks.

However, what they have posted on here is total garbage, has no point or purpose and is purely designed to try and distroy our site. Therefore there are no limits.

I'm the same in business. My word is my bond and I don't start a fight. However, if someone else tries to pull a fast one then I deem that they, not I, decided that there are no rules and that has to apply to my approach as well. I have no limits.

James
De Zeeuw Campbell
Johnson Bridge
Diarra Muntari
Stone Taylor
Yakubu Defoe

Subs - Niemi, Distin, Bale, Pahars, Sheringham
Nice to see good footballing banter on this site for once. This is the team I'd pick in a 4-3-3 that might actually work;

Mullins Taylor Bale

Yep,

Don't actually mind a bit of footy banter.

I must be honest, I can't remember how good Svenson was at your club. Enlighten me

De zueew was voted Barnsleys greatest ever player, and was so inspirational at our club.

Campbell was still a full England international when he arrived and was the team leader - so Svensson would need to be rather good to displace him.

Mullins, I think you must be having a laugh. Diarra was sold for 22 million to Madrid. He ran our midfield, he was something else.

Jose Moreno wanted Muntari as soon as he got to Inter Milan. He was a left sided midfielder. Very difficult for Bale to get past him and Taylor at the level he was playing at for Saints. Admitted - he is an immense talent - but not the whole package at your club.

Yakubu is probably the strongest player I have ever seen in the Premiership. He was also incredibly quick when he first came to Fratton. He trailed only Thierry Henry in the Prem goal scoring charts for 4 years before he went to Everton , and was their record signing. I think Beattie has a fair bit to do yet.

Johnson was a right back - If I assume you are referring to Glen.
