Hall of Fame induction for Saints legend

Lawrie McMenemy Lawrie McMenemy

Lawrie McMenemy will tonight receive one of football management’s greatest accolades as he is inducted into the LMA Hall of Fame.

Saints’ 1976 FA Cup winning boss will be given the honour at the League Managers Association’s gala dinner at Wembley.

He will also have his name officially added to the list of managers to have overseen 1,000 or more senior games.

McMenemy, who also led Saints to second place in the top flight in 1984 and into a number of European campaigns, will become only the 34th manager in the Hall of Fame.

That includes all past England managers, regardless of length of service.

He is also only the 20th manager added to the 1,000 club.

The Hall of Fame nomination comes from a panel of officials and managers who have also noted McMenemy’s outstanding contribution to charity work, much of which takes places in Hampshire.

And also the achievements driven forward by the Lawrie McMenemy Centre for Football Research in Southampton at Solent University.

A delighted McMenemy, 76, last night said: “It’s great to be in a group of managers who have done 1,000 games."

Well deserved. Congratulations.

Big Mac was a manager of the old school, before clubs became corporate and when working men could stand on the terraces and have a pint and not have to take out a mortgage for a season ticket.

Those were days when the top four or five clubs could not be guessed accurately at the start of the season.

You never ever heard of the owners of the clubs, they were rich old boys tucked away somewhere and hardly anybody knew their names. There were no directors of football and no chief executives. The manager was the manager and the coach was either the bloke in a tracksuit in the team photo or the means to get to away matches.

Big Mac was also on the very first TV Panel along with the likes of Paddy Crerand, Derek Dougan and Malcolm Allison. Great days.

Long time ago. Well done that man. Big Mac you are a true icon representing a time that football was still a preserve of the local community and not the vehicle for corporate greed that it is now.

Innit! Strength in unity and all that.

When I first read the headline, I thought NC (out of character, I know) had decided to create a Saints hall of fame at SMS ..... now there's an idea which would recognise the past without the need to intrude on the present or VERY BRIGHT future ..... and Lawrie Mac was going to be the first to be inducted.

I gather they already have one at Fratton. The criterion is simple: unsullied legends only.

It's not such a long list (of course) because the 'unsullied' bit somewhat reduced the list.

Still, it's just as well because they don't have a wall long enough for the huge number of (sullied) heroes who have over the years helped to create a club at which the bestest (blah blah blah) fans in the world have literally in their tens of hundreds watched (and booed) the bestest football in world (for about 80 minutes per match, at least).

It’s a pity, it would be a tourist attraction to rival the Mary Rose, Warrior and Victory -also great Skateville relics of the past - and would help the world to better know the people behind the club which, unrivalled by any other club in the world, has become famous for its proud history of buying trophies, packing parks, ringing annoying little bells, not paying charities and disappearing into the footballing abyss (aka the Rymans League).

Alas, it’s such a wasted opportunity!

The first time I became aware of him was when he was Graham Taylor's assistant, playing his part in the greatest football documentary of all time. The people actually in charge of the England squad were basically:

GT: "He's done him. He's done him from over there."
Phil Neal: "He's f***in' done him. He's f***in' done 'im from over there."

Lawrie McMenemy MBE! big mac was awarded the MBE in 2006 and so righfully deserves to have it printed along with his name. i am not one for knocking the echo but when they print a story about someone being honoured they should get his previous honours right. whilst talking about honours is it not about time that big mac is made Sir big mac? should be given for his charity work alone. you see it can be done, people in the football community can give to charities! not everyone just keeps the monies promised to them.

Lawrie was the master of signing great old pros moved on from top teams who still had something to give and mixing the pot with hot young talent.

I think our current model of packing the squad full with rising young potential is great too, but think we could do with a couple of extra old heads for leadership in key positions.

I was at SMS with the little Strassies a season or two ago and we were collecting autographs after a match. I have no memory of the team we were playing - once I scroll down the tables below QPR, I sort of forget those other 72 teams. Anyway, along came Mac. He was immediately surrounded by fans, including me and I explained to the little Strassies who this big feller was.

You know that look you get when someone from your past meets your eyes and sort of recognises you? Well, Mac and I had one of those moments (no, not in a BHA sort of way). It felt as if he and I both had the same thought at the same time .....

Phil Neal: "He's f***in' done him. He's f***in' done 'im from over there."
LM: "I don't belaaaaayve it."
GT: "Where's Gazza?"
PN: "GAZZA!"
GT: "He's f***ed."
PN: "Gazza? F***ed."
LM: "I don't belaaaaayve it."

Amazing scenes.
I try and watch 'The Impossible Job' at least once a year. LM is the only one to emerge with any credibility intact. Phil Neal is so far up Taylor's rectum that I'm surprised you can hear anything he says. Taylor is comedy gold all the way through but his attempt at instructing Nigel Clough how to play 'in the hole' never ceases to amuse, amaze and baffle me (and young Clough!).

"F%kin' Des!"

Ssssskuntssshhhhhhhh

h! It's sad to see such attention seeking.
What attention seeking?

I haven't noticed it.

Must have missed something!
The runt skunt of the litter always has to gasp for attention
Trouble is, Mush, in a normal litter, there's one runt and the rest are fine.

Not so in a little of skunts, which probably explains why so many are on here gasping for attention.

As for Seed's description, I think the Kreacher comparison works. Maybe there's a bit of Golom about them, too.

FA cup on 1976, stayed up until 3am local time as a kid, loving watching the underdog win! Lawrie is an absolute legend, bringing KK and a host of other talent to the Dell. I see Nigel in the same way, committed to the club, looking at the longer term picture and with the the backing of the fans.
I don't post very often but been a Saints fan for over 35 years and on my first trip to the UK can boast that within 2 hours of touching down was being shown around St Mary's by Herbie. Great Stadium and looking forward to seeing Saints hold on to their EPL status and prosper. COYR.....
Lawrie was the master of signing great old pros moved on from top teams who still had something to give and mixing the pot with hot young talent.

I think our current model of packing the squad full with rising young potential is great too, but think we could do with a couple of extra old heads for leadership in key positions.
Trouble is they earn so much now they don't need to play on. For yesterdays Keegan, George, Worthington, Ball etc you could read todays Scholes, Giggs etc but they will go from Man U straight into retirement.
Sadly , I think you are right as the money in the game now has certainly changed it all, even average players now are millionaires FFS.
Hopefully, there are always exceptions to the rule in the recent era, I mean some players that will go on forever for the love of the game and swap clubs e.g. Teddie Sheringham, Brad Friedal, Robbie Fowler, David Beckham, Craig Bellamy, surely they didn’t need the money.

I still play on Sundays and am left footed if you need me Nigel.

I always liked his quote about Violins

From your point of view - Shame about the documentary he was in with Graham Taylor. It was funny though - you have to admit that.

When he first came he made the brave decision to let Terry Paine go , who as we know was a true saints legend , but the board backed him even through relegation and he came good, we are unlikely to see a team the size of Southampton finish second in the league for a long time unless we get a rich sugar daddy and can't imagine us being able to sign Wayne Rooney or stevie g like big mac did with kk ,

It is difficult to tell whether Lawrie Mac left Southampton initially to go to Sunderland, although the wages he earned there were substantial, we were 5th in the League in 1985 and I guess he didn't think he could do any more with us. Sunderland were already a dying duck when he went there and even his expertise couldn't save them that time. Remember that in 1981 he turned down Manchester United, and Ron Atkinson took that job. It easy to criticise if you don't take in all of the facts.
