Adkins tries to see the positives in Canaries draw

Daily Echo: Nigel Adkins Nigel Adkins

Nigel Adkins was trying to take the positives out of his side’s 1-1 draw with Norwich.

Saints made it four games unbeaten in the top flight with the St Mary’s draw.

However, it could have been even better.

Rickie Lambert gave Saints the lead on 32 minutes only for a horrible error from Paulo Gazzaniga who allowed Robert Snodgrass’s free kick to squirm into the net just before half time.

“We got another point on the board,” reflected Adkins.

“That’s eight points in four games which is good.

“Of course you want to win your home games and in the first half I believed we were going to go on and win.

“Unfortunately that wasn’t the case but we haven’t lost it and it’s another point on the board so let’s be positive about that.”

Adkins was less enthusiastic about Gazzaniga’s mistake.

“He’s got to keep the ball out of the back of the net,” said Adkins.

Opening 20 mins were very positive and we carried on from the Newcastle game.
As soon as we scored something went from our game. Lambert even though he scored was below par and his movement off and on the ball was idle. Credit to Norwich they defended in numbers, were lively going forward and caused us problems.
This game hopefully re-enforces the need to be ruthless in the transfer Market and proves deals need to be done. All not in starting squad have a price, there's a lot of them and need to be moved on. We again need to bring in better than we already have in defence and keeper. Barnard, guly, and sharp out and let's bring in some one who can seriously challenge lamberts position, Jay is too young.
Same players bailing us out and we are putting a strain on them, they will end up injured or suspended.
Adkins again has a big job in this transfer window and he will earn his corn!

Players seemed a bit tired for some reason. I'm not sure why a sub wasn't made earlier. I'd have liked to have seen Mayuka come on.

I was expecting Mayuka to be Puncheons replacement because that was the area where we were getting most of the penetration in the 2nd half, but JRod did offer a different dimension, it just didn't come off this time.

“He’s got to keep the ball out of the back of the net,” mmmmm I'm a big fan of Adkins but that is not the most incisive comment he's come out with lately. Still, we are improving defensively, Norwich are a good team so we didn't let ourselves down and we are on the up. Unbeaten in four games.

Look to the positives, as someone often says

In the second half when we were struggling I looked at NA in the technical area speaking with Crosby and he appeared totally clueless. He didn't have any idea on how to improve what was becoming a tiring side.
IMO the squad shoukd have been rotated last night in the midfield. Cork and Spider who didn't perform last night should have been replaced by JWP and Davis. Even when it was apparent that Cork and Spider were struggling NA made no substitutions!!! JWP wasn't even on the bench because Reeves took his place as Shaw who is excellent last 90 minutes. NA is under pressure no doubt he wants to stick with what e thinks s a winning team and he's frightened to make substitutions due to past criticism of him! I hope there are midfield changes against Liverpool!!!!

I think that was because 3 of the team are still striving to attain the peak fitness they need to perform at this level.

Cork has just returned from injury.
Ramirez has also just returned from injury and now has to play more frequently than he has probably ever had to do.
Shaw is stepping up to a much higher level than he has played at before, hence the cramps every match.

On Sunday the entire midfield was very compact, with short passes, whereas last night there were gaps between them, leading to more misplaced passes, and more chasing to get the ball back.
NA has said that he asked AL and JP to play wider, so looks like the tactic nullified what we had against Newcastle.

I agree MAYUKA was worth a run out for the last 20 minutes at least.Too many players seemed lethargic last night so NA had to get his substitutions spot on.Unfortunately he still seems lacking in that department.Cant understand why he persists with GULY on the bench-away from home maybe but at home we need the option of bringing on a TADANARI LEE or even a STEVE DE RIDDER.
over the full 90 minutes a draw was a fair result but their goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of our lads and we were second best for most of the second half.those 2 points that we dropped could mean the difference between premiership football next season and playing in the championship. Now i feel that we must win at liverpool on saturday or else we might become entrapped in the bottom three for the rest of the season.

Nigel needs the help of an experienced PM Coach.
Two wins and one draw doesn't change the fact that NA is struggling in the PL.
How can the youngest team in the PL look as knackered as Saints did last night?
Were they all on the p*ss to the early hours after beating Newcastle? --- just hope none of them were driving -- or is the training regime not up to PL standards -- take your pick both are probably right!
Has Solent Interiors been paid yet??
