Saints suffered stage fright at Anfield, says Adam Lallana

Daily Echo: Steven Gerrard chases Adam Lallana Steven Gerrard chases Adam Lallana

SAINTS captain Adam Lallana confessed that Saints were overawed during their defeat to Liverpool.

Lallana was frustrated by the first-half performance as Nigel Adkins’ side struggled to gain any foothold in the match.

While the damage was limited to a solitary Daniel Agger goal, it was still too much to recover from – Saints appearing star struck on their first visit to Anfield in almost eight years with Liverpool fans Morgan Schneiderlin and Rickie Lambert racing to swap shirts with Kop legend Steven Gerrard after the final whistle.

“Maybe the occasion got to a few of us today in the first half,” admitted Lallana. “It took us a while to settle. “We weren’t our usual selves. But second half we were a lot better, and while it was 1-0 anything could happen.

“We wanted to stay in the game to the death. We made a couple of changes and Jay (Rodriguez) came on and was lively, but we just didn’t get that clear-cut chance that we wanted and, obviously, we’ve walked away with nothing.”

The Saints captain added: “We’re disappointed the way we went about our first-half performance – whether we showed them a bit too much respect or we just didn’t believe in our own ability as much as we should have done.

Related links

“We were hoping to get into halftime goalless, but Agger scored a great header, and it was probably nothing less than they deserved really.

“But second half was a lot more of an assured performance. We kind of sat off them a little bit and let them play out rather than trying to press them, and we had a couple of chances on the counter attack and we were in it to the last minute, which is what we wanted to do at half-time.

“On another day we might have nicked a goal.”

There may have been an understandable air of frustration at the team’s four-match unbeaten run coming to an end, and a sense among the players that they did not completely do themselves justice with their performance, but this was not a day where confidence would have taken a significant hit.

Saints certainly appear to be a more resolute side, mentally as well as on the pitch, than they were earlier in the season when they were shipping goals by the bucket load.

“We’re making strides forward, there’s no doubt about that,” said Lallana.

That could be important, as Saints enter what appears to be a critical pre-Christmas period.

Nigel Adkins’ men will host fellow strugglers Reading and Sunderland before December 25 – a date after which the fixture list again takes on a more daunting appearance.

A run of poor results now would be alarming.

“Christmas is going to be massive,” said Lallana. “We’ve got a huge game against Reading. It’s important we pick up points at home, especially against the teams around us, and we’re focusing on that now.

“We’ll put this game to bed, and it’s a huge game next weekend.”

I was a bit alarmed to hear Schneiderlin's boyhood hero was Steven Gerrard when he's only 32 years of age! It shows how young and inexperienced they are despite being good footballers. We were never going to win a game where everybody is starstruck and scared to tackle their idols. Liverpool are not the team of old and we could have pinched a draw had some decent tackles gone in. I can't remember seeing a single tough challenge which was a shame. Got some very winnable games coming up so need to get out the relegation zone to look a more attractive proposition to some quality, experienced players come January. We need a tough experienced midfield general type, at least one more centre back and a winger for competition I reckon. And we need Gazzaniga to stop looking terrified. Poor bloke looks like he's about to have an accident in his shorts one minute then pulls off a cracking save the next.

Adam thats the most stupid excuse ive ever heard. Liverpool outplayed you all over the pitch from start to finish. Saints were never in the game and a 5 nil loss would not have flattered them. Liverpool have been a poor team team recently yet we let them play, and made them look like Barcelona. Wake up Saints and get stuck in like the Newcastle game.

Seems like Nigel, Ricky and Morgan were in awe of the whole Anfield experience! Crikey it seems more like Christopher not believing that he's made it to the finals of the X factor (Thanks to his nan), rather than what was a crucial match against what I feel is quite an average Liverpool team and one that Saints should have been capable of getting a point from! Wins against Reading and Sunderland are now a must, otherwise I think we could be cut adrift!!!

Posted this yesterday...and Adam do not allow it to happen again, as a Saint we do not mind losing (well we do a bit) but at least come off the pitch knowing you could do no more!....here it is...

........Something positive was available from most games this season...yesterday was atrocious, our accuracy and speed of passing was dreadful...

...we either passed straight to them or took so long faffing about that they were always back behind the ball, had we played at a higher tempo and simply gone for it we could have scored.....

... we lost simply by respecting a long gone reputation, there was actually nothing to fear...shocker...

Losing is one thing but being afraid for no reason, it aint war ffs is disgraceful, dammit all we could out pass that team if we had not gone into panic mode, AGAIN!!!

Gerrard has been the stand-out player for Liverpool in a very poor era (by earlier standards) for them - pity he has never produced it at international level. However, swapping shirts with opposition players - whats that all about? - ok if it was Pele or Maradona in a World Cup - maybe that means something - but in a Premier League game? I would question some of the saints teams focus/hunger for success - they should have been seriously **** off with that performace not least for all the travelling support. Hopehully this is a one off and the players will be less star-struck in future.

I watched Villa v Reading on tv not long ago and both teams looked awful. Reading have yet to pick up a win and this is now December. I expect us to win this match with the quality we have in the team. 3 points and we'll shoot up the table a bit giving us a platform to go on and get a run of wins together...I hope. COYR!

We have four great attacking players in the starting 11 who showed what they can do against Newcastle. But when the team is put under any kind of pressure it just goes to pieces. Norwich got a comfortable draw in midweek because they got enough position of the football. Gaston, AL, RL and Punch are great but until we gains a semblance of composure in the back four we don't have the luxury of a solid platform to play them together. Reading and Sunderland are must win games now but I cannot see us keeping a clean sheet against either of them. Put Davis in there with Spider and JC and we might be a bit more solid defending as a team the dilemma is who do you drop?

A few misguided comments. Having watched the game I'd say our best performers were Lambert, Schneiderlin and the two centre-halves so actually the two 'Liverpool fans' performed rather than admired. Liverpool had the overwhelming amount of possession but actually we limited them to few clear cut chances (3 maybe?); our defence has come on a huge amount. We compressed the pitch far more in the second half which brought us into the game and our most disappointing performers were Lallana, Cork and Puncheon who seemed a bit leggy. Losing 1-0 at Anfield is not a catastrophic result and the resilience shown is a very positive sign. We'll be OK if we continue to progress as we have.

The reason why our 4 attacking players were so good against Newcastle, was because they had licence to roam.
Adam's goal came as a result of him being between the posts, inside the 6 yard box, not stuck out on the wing.
The 2nd goal came as a result of Puncheon finding himself on the left side of our team, inter passing with Lallana, not stuck out on the right wing.
Also, during that game, Gaston and Lambert drifted wide, creating the space for the midfielders to run into, and creating problems for the defenders, who didn't know who to pick up.
At Liverpool neither AL or Punch ventured into central positions, which left Gaston isolated (how many times did he dribble the ball across the pitch looking for someone to pass to?) and also made us very predictable and slow in our attacking build ups.
Also, the idea of keeping AL and Punch wide, in an attempt to restrict the Liverpool full backs from bombing forward, didn't work.
It also meant that, when we did have the ball, AL and Punch weren't in areas of the pitch where they could inflict harm on the Liverpool defence.
Just a thought, but if we are going to play a shape, with the intention of stopping the other team from playing their best football, would it be a good idea to use defensive minded players to do that job, rather than 2 players that aren't naturally defensively minded, then send the talented players on to nick goals late on, against tired defenders?

Lots of SAINTS connections with Newport.-After he retired the flying left winger and England under 23 internationaL JOHN SYDENHAM managed them.A few ex Saints apprentices who never made the grade at the Dell also played for them. including centre half BOB WAKERLEY,midfielder BRIAN HUMBER and inside forward Chris Cheverton.I can remember seeing Chris play in the same SOTHAMPTON A side as future Saints and England centre forward MARTIN CHIVERS.What a great player Martin was.We could do with a forward like him next week against Reading.
Well done BoroughSaint07 for giving us the first intelligent and sane report on the game. Most of the tosh on here seems to come from fans who were not at the game. We can't rely on Dave Merrington because I dont think he has got overthe way he was treated by Saints and damns with faint praise. The Echo's alleged feud with Saints means they take every opportunity to snipe at them and my national newspaper's report is entirely about Liverpool with Saints barely getting a mention. Roll on the 14th December then the fans who are so obsessed with them down the road can return to football and concentrate on the Saints.

Dave Merrington tells it like it is.He is Southampton through and through.Despite playing with some distinction for Burnley for many seasons in the 1960s when they played in Europe and despite a fruitful period at Leeds when they were big gboys on the domestic scene he remains a true staunch SOUTHAMPTON fan.As a young lad born and bred ihn the north east he was a Newcastle fan but whenever they are in town he still shouts for the SAINTS.
If a SAINTS player is off his game Dave will always give constructive criticism.
He answered a crisis call from the directors when he had his season in charge and he saved us from relegation. In my mind he was harshly trreated by the likes of Guy Askham but at the end of the day what does one expect from a lawyer.
Dave Merrington should be considered a SAINTS legend for the sterling work he did with the SAINTS youth set up.The likes of Alan Shearer,Neil Maddison,Tommy Widdrington,Francis Benali and Matt Le Tissier would no doubt admit that Big Dave was a very important influence in their development both on and off the pitch.
Another ex North Easterner who has also taken the club to his heart is of course the great midfield player DAVE ARMSTRONG.What a player he was.He should have won a lot more England caps than he did..We could do with his guile and goal scoring prowess in midfield to this day.

It would be good to see NA exercise some options and play a shape away from home to try pick up some points. Asking Llanna and Punch to go out and stop full backs does not appear to make much sense but I guess the starting 11 are so far away in terms of quality from the rest of the squad (with the exception of Davis) that he doesn't have much choice. lets just hope for a repeat of Newcastle this saturday and again when Sunderland come down.
[p][bold]right back in the bar[/bold] wrote:
[p][bold]Costa Baz[/bold] wrote:
[p][bold]right back in the bar[/bold] wrote: We have four great attacking players in the starting 11 who showed what they can do against Newcastle. Put Davis in there with Spider and JC and we might be a bit more solid defending as a team the dilemma is who do you drop?[/p]
Just a thought, but if we are going to play a shape, with the intention of stopping the other team from playing their best football, would it be a good idea to use defensive minded players to do that job, rather than 2 players that aren't naturally defensively minded, then send the talented players on to nick goals late on, against tired defenders?[/p]
It would be good to see NA exercise some options and play a shape away from home to try pick up some points. Asking Llanna and Punch to go out and stop full backs does not appear to make much sense but I guess the starting 11 are so far away in terms of quality from the rest of the squad (with the exception of Davis) that he doesn't have much choice. lets just hope for a repeat of Newcastle this saturday and again when Sunderland come down.[/p]
I would expect us to revert to the same style of play we had against Newcastle, for both of these games. Went to the SAINTS U21 Game to see JWP Mayuka and Tad Lee ...

No-one really impressed ... JWP was OK ... Mayuka lacked the pace all the posters go on about and Tad Lee did not shoot on sight -

Play these guys against Chel..skum and Saints will be on the end of a 3-0 loss at home in the FA Cup.

Nothing will upset the Supporters more.

WE NEED TO GET A F*CKING GRIP.

WE BEAT QPR - WE AIM TO SMASH FULHAM AWAY. WE AIM TO WIN AGAINST READING AND SUNDERLAND.

We should be able to field a very strong side and beat Chel..skum in the FA Cup and give the Supporters somethingg to cheer about.

This Season has been dire (including the performances at leeds liverpool and ars*nil)

WE DEMAND SUCCESS.

WE DEMAND THE WINS.

WE ARE RED ARMY (FIGHT AND WIN) AND WE RULE THE SOUTH.

The visitors equalised with ten minutes remaining when Federico Macheda stroked home on the edge of the area, but the SQUANDERED chance to take all three points through a second spot kick means that qualification to the Elite stage is now no longer in Saints’ hands.

Pompey are always a Roller Coaster.

Saints are always a Heavy Goods Night Train, slow and ponderous, nobody really notices them, and they always unload their cargo at the end of the line - err season.

Forget nonsense excuses. Last season newy promoted Swansea were clapped of the Ainfield pitch by the Liverpool supporters. It is about time our style was imposed on the opposition

Then if Reading bully us like they did twice last year it will be all over for our chances of survival and, I think,NA.

Unlike Liverpool this is a make or break game.

Right, Swansea's performance at Anfield is entirely out of context with typical performances a) away from home for them last season and b) a laughable yardstick you've tried to create for measuring success of a newly promoted club. The logic (if there is any) in your statement being failure to dominate at Anfield = erm, failure. Tosh. Secondly, Reading had the better of the first game last season but in absolutely no way did they 'dominate' us in the second game. We had 73% possession and 23 shots on goal to their 6. Thirdly, you know what? We could lose and still survive. There you go, that is factually possible and statistically plausible. Unlike that wind-up garbage i've just responded to.

I'm behind the manager that achieved back to back promotions and a united club. Try it, you'll get more out of this season.

Just for once, I will respond to you, your obsession with Silverware is over the top, yes, we all like our teams to win things, but not at any cost, but I would rather we did it honestly or not at all. Saints have always been a roller coaster ride, Portsmouth FC are more of a House of Horrors at the moment only less amusing.

Christ Gloria, I'm glad you put those numbers at the bottom there 'cos it kind of puts things in perspective!
It's lucky you got that cup under your belt in 08, otherwise those figures would look very very bleak indeed! Rollercoaster? Without 08 it would have looked more like the fookn Underground!

Sheila,

I just put some random numbers at the bottom of the page, cos everyone else is doing it.

I think your club is a bit like the big dipper at Blackpool ie quite old, just one high really then rebuilt in 2010. Jethro Tull even wrote about it 1976. ie very seventies, and we await what the future will bring.

I've just come back from Paris actually. I love the way their underground - breaks out and crosses the Seine, grabs all the attention then goes undergound, then rises again a little away from the centre. Yep I agree with you.

14.12.12. The day we take over.

What's up these days then Osprey eh? I mentioned "sticky pads" with reference to an old keyboard and making mistakes, and you haven't communicated since.

Anyway, I never mentioned trophies, just put some numbers at the bottom of the page.

I do think the honesty thing is a bit rich, when it had nothing to do with the fans, and I notice that noone here seems to talk about the free stadium you got through your administration period...Pot,kettle, black?

I do agree with you a bit on the House of Horrors. I actually liked the "Hammer" ones, as you got to see some nice looking chicks in them.

14.12.12. We will be running things.

MG Please read your post again. "36 years without a trophy"? How is that not mentioning trophies? Who exactly is the "We" you refer to, because if you are an example, I don't hold out much hope!
