Nigel Adkins confirms Adam Lallana will miss Sunderland game with a knee injury

Adam Lallana Adam Lallana

Saints manager Nigel Adkins has confirmed that Adam Lallana will miss Saturday's match against Sunderland, but refused to comment any further on his captain's injury status.

The 24-year-old limped off in the first half of the 1-0 defeat of fellow strugglers Reading on December 8 with a knee complaint, after Royals midfielder Jay Tabb accidentally fell onto him.

Adkins was peppered with questions about the issue throughout a 15-minute press conference this afternoon, saying that Lallana was "progressing well".

However, he staunchly refused to detail how long the player would be out for.

"Adam is still in his knee brace," he said. "He is progressing well and is now off the crutches.

"He won't be available for Saturday's game against Sunderland and that is all I need to say."

Asked for further clarification, Adkins added: "That is all we are going to say.

"We're just going to say he is out for the Sunderland game and you can ask me the next question ahead of the next game."

It's bad news but is bound to happen to key players during the course of a season. I suppose that's the point of a squad. At least we have plenty of strength in depth in the middle of the park, a CB would have been far more difficult to cover.

Great result against Reading more of the same against Blunderland please!
Chin up Adam the misery of not playing for a couple of weeks will be a distant memory...unless you know something different?

That's the man who accused posters on here of mocking the sad news of the Pompey fan who passed away in Fratton carpark even though not one had mentioned it. Then he attacked a poster who was of to Russia for life saving surgery from what I presume is cancer. That poster was obviously very scared and worried about what lay ahead for him, it was without doubt the worst I have ever seen on here or The News.

I presume Scooter75 was one of your mulitple logins hence your knowledge of his being banned?

Lots of options to cover for Adam and I know everyone has a different view on it.
The team have trained for two weeks without him, knowing that it was likely he would miss at least the Sunderland game.
Fox is an exciting option, MYuka is long overdue his chance and he probably trained harder with that hope.
The team have toughened up over the last few games and present a different competition now than in the first few games. Gungho is not the style and the midfield know their responsibility. JWP has to be wondering if he is going to get another run, Davis also.
I am looking forward to yet another exciting Saturday at SMS!!!

Adam being out use to devastating news as he was the main play maker and it would affect results.

The Squad and Players have improved and when Adam went off against Reading .. Gaston came on and improved the game.

WE ALL WANT ADAM FIT - but the enforced rest hopefully will do him good and also give him the chance to shed the Captains armband for a few weeks.

Over the last few years we had seen some real idiots on this site from Bore-mouth and Brighton and recently we have got more WUMS and some from the blue few.

Merry Christmas pis. It's the time of year for good cheer and to spare a thought for those less fortunate, those who struggle, and the downright miserable.

Take, for example, young Josh Thompson, featured on your snooze site today because he was send out on loan to Colchester by P*mpey by mutual agreement because at 21 years old he can't break into a team made up of little kids, crooks and crocked journeymen.

Sounds like he shouldn't have given the day job as a bin man or whatever.

One guess if he broke into the colchester side either. Imagine he pi$$ taking he suffers.

Lillyanna out injured so no cheap diving penalties for you on Saturday then. Another relegation 6-pointer, they have been coming since Wigan at the end of August (a record earliest) and they will keep coming with QPR revitalised by Arry and rapidly closing ground.

BTW, did I mention 3000 empty seats n your last home game? I predict 5000 empty seats against Sunderland, and 10000 the rest of your home games as the Library Mob witness inevitable relegation

well i guess adams out for some time then. wheres MRSA and his medical knowledge when we need it?
injurys like this are going to happen, and we all hope lallas back soon, but in the meantime its a great chance for the squad players to make their claim for a starting spot.
mayuka will be off to the acn next year so thats another player out for a while.
its been too long since the last game, and now we have 5 games in 15 days, at least we have had a rest before these games. the squad is going to be pushed to the limits and we as fans need to get behind all of the players and the team that NA picks.
the only good thing for lalla is that at least he will be able to spend his nippers first christmas at home with him.
COYRs a nice home win to start off the festive season.

A big blow to have Adam out injured with so many vital games coming up. Who has the experience and authority to be captain? KD is the obvious choice but not certain to be in the team.. SD the next most experienced but not certain to be in the team...

And what on earth is going on with Tadanari Lee?? Like many others I was delighted when we signed him last January, but he never plays, and has drawn maybe £1M out of the club in wages in that time. We need him to step up NOW and contribute while Adam is injured. Saturdy will be a good time to start.

Like many others I was delighted when we signed him last January, but he never plays, and has drawn maybe £1M out of the club in wages in that time. Well now everyone here in the pub is saying that I am an idiot, and it is obvious that Sir Rickie should be captain.
I am not convinced (on either issue), in my opinion a striker's job is to score goals, not to be captain and motivate the team. The most successful sides have a defender or midfielder as captain. Opinions please?

i think that rickie would make a top captain ........ can't think of a reason why not and reckon it would boost his confidence even more ........ good call imo .

We have less empty seats than you have full one's, and I predict your lot bottom of league 1 (3 in old money) for Christmas, then well nothing, nothing at all your already circling around the plug hole. Ta Ta

Remember Haddock - what a **** he turned out to be.

No one cares about them.

WE GO ON SATURDAY TO WIN.
WE GO TO FULHAM IN GOOD VOICE TO FIGHT AND WIN.

WE ARE THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON.

RED ARMY 2012.
THE PRIDE AND THE PASSION.
I think, RedArmy, you're making the same mistake that I did and getting the decent Capt Haddock muddled up with the t0ssp0t Capt Cook.

Easy mistake to make.

Yeah. Shame about Adam but we still have intenationals ready to step up. He's our capt. because of his loyalty to the Saints and his length of time at the club. Now if we apply the same principle to the SKUNTS we would need to see who has served the longest loan. :-) . Have a good Christmas Skates. Make the most of it cos it's your last.

No the worst thing that has been said on here is by you. When you said what you would like to do to PFC supporters with noxious substances and heavy hand held building materials.

A reference to genocide is far worse than anything else that has been written on here.

Try to stay out of denial your recent posts have shown a marked improvement. Well Done!

Hello new poster. You mean bricking and gassing? Don't think a general tongue in cheek comment compares to a direct attack on an individual suffering a serious illness or trying to make capital out of the death of one of your own fans. If you can't see the difference you must be a skunt.

I wonder what Nicola Cortese and Nigel Adkins would think of your tongue in cheek comments as they were originally written. You being a key sponsor of the club.
And I wonder what some of the MD's of your key customer's would think of those original comments? And what would some of the Chief Football reporters on the nationals who are campaigning to clean up soccer think? Given your position of being Mr Adkins sponsor.

Merry Christmas! Happy New Year!

So PT, sorry Seed, given everybody knows your views, would you say that Nicola Cortese and Nigel Adkins are in favour of bricking and gassing skunts?

If not necessarily in a genocidal way but in a more tongue and cheek, fun way, if you know what I mean? I would be interested to know.
