Saints lose Mayuka to African Cup of Nations

Saints' Mayuka is linking up with Zambia squad. Saints' Mayuka is linking up with Zambia squad.

Saints striker Emmanuel Mayuka has left the club to link up with the Zambia squad ahead of the African Cup of Nations.

Zambia, like all other nations involved, have until January 9 to name their final squad, although it is a formality that Mayuka, the winner of the golden boot award at the 2012 tournament, will be included in it.

Mayuka, who signed for Saints from Swiss side Young Boys in August, made his first Premier League start in the 1-0 home defeat to Sunderland on December 22, but has not played since, finishing the club’s last four matches as an unused substitute.

So, while the 22-year-old’s absence will have an impact on the depth of Nigel Adkins’ squad for the next few weeks, it is not a debilitating loss. Mayuka is the only player Saints have who is affected by the mid-season tournament.

While the transfer window might be the primary cause of stress for a Premier League manager in January, the African Cup of Nations is also another major source of it.

This year’s tournament, running from January 19 to February 10 in South Africa, will again see a host of English-based players in action, meaning some clubs could be left short-handed for up to a month.

Won,t exactly be missed will he. Only notable thing he has done was getting the pen against Villa and the game was already over. Never took his chance when he got a start recenty. However he has obvious potential.A good African Nations cup might do him some good. One for the future methinks.

Zambia mate like it says in the article.

I'll be watching - good opportunity for him to go and show what he can do and hopefully pick up another golden boot.

even though he hasn't had game time, I agree that he is one for the future and good to have in the squad.

It gives him match practice and puts him back on show to demonstrate what he can do. Best of luck to him.

I wonder why Tarabat hasn,t been selected by Morocco.......

and something really smells about how Chelsea didnt bother to turn up against QPR last week , compared to the Chelsea that destroyed us in the Cup.

Double over Villa coming up!!!!

True. But it's worth the risk. He was dreadful in his only home start of the year, against Sunderland.

He might be the so-called 68th best player in the world, but he was only the 22nd best player on the pitch that day.

Good luck to him.he might have won the golden boot last time round but for saints apart from his great performance in the 2nd half v spurs it has been more a case of cast iron clodhoppers.

To quote Johnny Nash-"there are more questions than answers"-and this geezer's another one of late, he's just muddied the waters (another great musician-see) as far as our striker dilemma goes.
Other questions at this time:
Why do we wear white shirts at home?
How can we lose 5-1 at home and rarely win by the same margin in the last 2 seasons? (Home or Away?)
Why do the Box office charge £1.50 PER TICKET for debit or credit card?
Why have we abandoned the red and white stripes?
How can we sing 'come on you reds'?
How do some 'experts' know that Hammond/ Sharp etc are 'not up to this League', yet de Ridder/Boruc/Gazzani
ga are considered?
Why the hell do we wear white shirts in a home game-who's idea was this?
If our central defenders are so good at hanball, why not put them in goal?
What is the stupid idea of wearing an 'away strip' at home-effectively capitulating before a ball is kicked?
Just because we have reached the 'PL' (read 'promised land' or 'premier league') why is all considered to be well?
Where are all the campaigning/influent
ual fans groups?
Did some players know they were off on some warm-weather jolly when they were strolling around St Mary's with my twenty-five quid of hard-earned? and lastly:
WTF was the point of those white leisure garments, and did anyone buy on the strength of this cynical marketing ploy? suggest next time some bottled urine in the Club shop? This is Victor Meldrew signing off.

good post.it is ironic that after such a rubbish performance v chelsea,NA is going to reward the players with a mini break in sunny climes when either rounds 4 or 5 are played.
ok after that dire display last saturday they certainly need some hot fire in their bellies but i would make them train in full public gaze on southampton common during those 2 vacant weekends.the performance of many of them were criminal so they should be treated as same.PULL YOUR BOOTS UP LADS 3 POINTS AWAY AT VILLA ARE EXPECTED ON SATURDAY.
