Saints confirm backroom staff

Daily Echo: Saints confirm backroom staff Saints confirm backroom staff

Saints have confirmed the appointments of new manager Mauricio Pochettino's backroom staff.

Jesús Pérez, who worked as a technical coach under Pochettino at Espanyol, is the assistant boss.

The 41-year-old started at the Spanish side as a first-team analyst in 2010, before working his way up.

Miguel D'Agostino, 41, takes over as a first-team coach, while former Spanish international Toni Jiménez, 42, is the goalkeeping coach.

Like Pérez, they also worked under Pochettino at Espanyol, with Jiménez having served as his number two at the Spanish club.

The trio will be assisted by technical support coach Fran Alonso.

Nigel Adkins' backroom staff - Andy Crosby, Dean Wilkins and Jim Stannard - had all been relieved of their duties following the dismissal of the previous boss last week.

How many speak English? Lack of English is I see potentially a problem. Living in Italy (with I'm ashamed to say very limited Italian) I have first hand experience of working through an interpreter. It is not always easy and the more "technical" the situation the more difficult it becomes. The phrase "getting lost in translation" comes to mind. For example whilst watching a game here in Italy when I mentioned a "square ball" was the best option I was told a football is round!! I rest my case.

I do not condone the sacking, the way the sacking was done or the fact that we have lost a great talent in NA.

I do however think, for the sake of the team that has shown passion and commitment all season (lets face it they will be affected too) that any demonstration would be futile. I would prefer to use tonight as a tribute to NA with constant pro NA chants to show our loyalty to Nigel - our way of saying thanks and all the best.

Then - we get on with it and support the team and management we now have. Lets face it, NC brought us Markus and Nigel - both decisions he got bang on!

I said this on another article, if Cortese has been interfering and picking the team for the last three years, then surely it doesn't matter if Adkins is gone as Cortese is the master mind who guided us to back-to-back promtions. Therefore, we should be chanting his name on Monday in support as he's one of the most successful managers/chairman we've had. Or is it only when we lose that we can claim Cortes picks the team?
Personally it's the biggest load of rubbish I've ever heard and I doubt Cortese plays any part in team selection, otherwise Ramirez would have started every match.

Interefere? How? No, I just am making a point that I think some of those posting on here are being a bit negative towards the Saints, I am just asking them, if they are, or were Saints fans to consider their actions. If they are just on a wind up mission, chances are they are not Saints at all. Nothing to stop posters putting Saints in there sign on if they wish, but if they are honest and not Saints fans they shouldn't.

Osprey, I notice you've advised a few people to drop "saint" from their login.

Given your enthusiastic backing for an executive who has been roundly condemned for how he has behaved, and how quickly you've put the knife into Nigel, perhaps you ought to spend some time looking in the mirror mate.

Well, you have got me wrong there then. On both counts, I only want what is best for Southampton FC, don't you? Keeping Nigel would have been my choice, it hasn't happened, I can't change that, I have to accept the facts and move on, at the same time asking you to do the same. How many times do have to say it? I am not saying I am 100% correct, I got the sacking terribly wrong, saying it couldn't happen, so my judgement is somewhat flawed. What I don't have is a pathological hatred of the one man above all that saved my football club from oblivion at the last moment. Why can you not grasp that?

One thing for sure is that there will be a lot of empty seats tonight, and that has nothing to do with politics of the situation, the weather is going to make it impossible for many to get to the Stadium, it is up to the ones that make it to double their efforts, it could be a troublesomematch, Everton are a very good team at the moment and any kind of result will be a bonus, considering.

Why should someone like Cortese treat NA like that. Its not Cortese's club it's all of ours.
What will MP achieve in 16 games. Europe ? Top 4 or just what NA would have achieved.
Dismiss him in the summer if you have to ( with reasons ) but not NO.
I have missed only a handful of games home and away over the last 10 yrs and the majority of Saints supporters would find Cortese's attitude appalling imo ....but not you ?

OK, I hate what happened last week as much as anyone but the fact of the matter is that, whether in one week or six months, or three years, we have to get over it.

So, in my opinion, we should get over it now.

The decision is made. Now we either get behind the team and show everyone in the country how strong we are and how much we love this club (not the chairman) or we give the media and our rivals and Pompey what they've wanted all season - the next Blackburn Rovers.

Make no mistake, Pompey fans (who interestingly seem to have gone missing under likely Saints user names this week) want us to wallow in self pity for the next six months.

Our relegation rivals are depending on us doing it.

We have the power to make Cortese's big gamble fail. It might anyway, but we can ensure that the new manager doesn't stand a hope in hell.

Or we can give him a fighting chance and take a siege mentality.

Nigel Atkins is a great man. He's also an insanely positive person and I could only wish to have his self belief.

The question is, what would he suggest we do in reaction to his sacking?

My guess is he'd say what he said to his players - keep smiling, believe in yourselves and always look for the positives.

He definitely wouldn't say give up and wallow in self pity to show how much you loved me.

After every set back, Nigel would say 'it's behind us, get on with the next game'.

It's going to be hard, but that's exactly what we've got to do now.

Out of interest devon saint, I totally 100% agree with you that this was an appalling sacking at a ridiculous time, dragging our club's name through the mud and treating a great man in an awful way. I just believe we need to somehow protest in a way that doesn't involve pushing our club into the mire both financially and in footballing terms - unless we really are saying it is better to be in Pompey's boat than to support Saints under NC.

I have been proved right on all counts.
NC should have brought in an experienced, proven, PL coach to assist Nigel from day one in the PL. -- he didn't.
Had he done so the learning curve wouldn't have been so steep, Saints would now have been higher in the league table and Nigel would have been fire proof, well as fire proof as anyone can be under a weasel like Cortese.
As a result of NC's mistake, Nigel had to learn from scratch, it took him time but he did it and Saints now sit above many of the bigger clubs with popular, recognised, PL managers, with an excellent chance of avoiding relegation.
For God's sake --Nigel beat Cortese's own 5 year plan by 2 or is it 3 years, what more does the weasel expect?
The weasel's actions have been condemned by everyone in football from Fergie himself and 95% of the Saints fans.
What goes around comes around and I predict that the weasel will get his just come uppance -- sooner rather than later ---unfortunately for SFC and its supporters, I predictit will be before the end of this season, whilst Nigel will go from strength to strength.
A great club has been tainted by this weasel of a chairman --- I can't wait for him to go POP!
I only hope Terry Paine resigns in protest, surely he wouldn't now want his name mentioned in the same breath as Cortese's.
Has Solent Interiors been paid yet, for their first claim --- does anyone know the date of the next court hearings for claims 2 and 3?!!

I think the white hanky protest is a great idea ...then support the team whatever....and hope Cortese gets HIS comeuppance one day.

Just read the profiles of the new coaching team at St Mary’s.
On the face of it, there seem remarkable similarities with Poortvliet and Wotte….on the whole, undistinguished time spent in undistinguished lower tier teams….except Poortvliet had a superior record as player than Poinsettia.
Poinsettia: well-known for its appearance around Christmas but makes little impact the rest of the year. “..the red color represents the blood sacrifice through the crucifixion.” (wiki)
No parallels there then!

White hankies idea is dumb and ignorant in my opinion - makes it a protest against the manager, not the chairman.

Why make him feel uncomfortable by showing him we don't want him? It's a Spanish insult, not an Italian one, and the only one who will be made to feel unwelcome from it is the manager.

Horrible idea.

Dear God in Heaven! What a load of tosh is being written on this site!

Ospreysaint is absolutely right. We have to move on and support our team, especially tonight. How many of the 'let's hang NC' brigade were only recently screaming 'in NC and NA we trust!'.

And another thing - it is NOT, repeat NOT 'our Club'. To my knowledge it is Swiss owned. As supporters of SFC we support the Club and the team that goes out on the Park each week. I have done that for nearly 60 years and will continue to do so until the Grim Reaper calls for me.

How many times do we have to say that we are almost all 100% shocked that Nigel has departed, and the manner in which his dismissal was done. But the fact is he has gone. We have a new management team and we move on. That's what Osprey is saying, and I totally agree with him.

I will NOT be demonstrating in any way tonight. It's pointless and will achieve nothing. I want the team to know that as a Saints fan and supporter the players have my full support, and I will be willing them on to get three points. I do not want Mr Moyes going home with the spoils because a few mindless so called fans have undermined the team.

Now lets stop moaning. What's done is done - we can do nothing about it - so lets move forward starting on the terraces tonight.

I agree with the middle bits, bar the slightly over the top abuse aspect.

The start and end bits I don't agree with.

As for Nigel getting help, when has the director of football idea ever worked? From day one you get the press speculating that the new man will soon replace the manager. It NEVER works.

As for the end bit, yes, agree, but owing one person a couple of grand is surely better than owning thousands hundreds of grand, which is the Pompey scenario we'd be in without the backing of the current regime.

Cortese convinced Markus to buy this club. Whether you hate what he's doing now as much as I do or not, you cannot say he hasn't played a massive part in getting us here.

Question - League 2 without Nicola Cortese or Premier League with him? It's a bit of a moral dilemma sure, but one to think about.

When he took over Plymouth, Coventry and Pompey were doing very nicely thank you very much. Look at them now. If we hadn't had an owner like him come November 2008 we'd probably be in non-league right now.

There will be no white flag or hankies from me,,,,,the supporter who called for this white hankie protest (Perry McMillan) won't even at the game,,,as funnily enough he is neither a season ticket holder or does he attend games.

This ill-thought out idea is just plain crazy, on the face of it it read like this to me,,,,An Italian sacks an Englishman and replaces him with a Argentine,,,,so I know lets do a Spanish style protest,,,,,where's the Spaniard?

We should support our team and we will support our team

....BUT.........

......surely we must show in some way to our chairman Cortese that we, the Southampton supporters, firmly disapprove his sacking of Nigel Adkins and that he just shouldn's do as he likes, the supporter are ones who make the club what it is, without them - there is no club, and a football club should be managed according to their wishes/desires, not by his own ego and ambition.

As a Saints supporter for 50+ years (although through distance and finance now an armchair one), I thought I'd add my pennyworth to the combination of good sense, thoughtful responses and in many cases utter drivel that has cascaded down these posts in the last few days.

Totally agree with Egomaniac - this is no longer the Ted Bates and Tery Paine era and its no good bleating about how it used to be. Saints are now a business, owned by people who have no real connection with us fans as is shown by Cortese's woeful lack of man-management skills or basic decency.

However ....

1. Remember where we've come from in the past 3 years and be thankful.

2. Remember the players - like us - are just commodities. They're paid fantastic sums to give 100% however they're treated and whoever is put over them.

3. Be thankful we have management who do actually have a distinct plan (project), with the aim of Saints becoming an established and hopefully successful Premiership club. However much we may dislike the way it is carried out at times the job of all true fans must surely be to do everything they can to bring out the best in those wearing the Saints strip, home or away. We're not able to effect any other change but that is surely our prime responsibility.

So, win or lose tonight, give the new bloke a chance. By all means show a heartfelt farewell to NA but above all support the team and what those above them are trying to achieve. I'd rather be supporting a club which has direction and purpose than one drifting about in a sea of mediocrity and forever flirting with relegation!

Yes, if you look at the situation in a very lazy way, but if you look more closely and sensibly it is a very different situation.

Poortvliet was specifically asked to work with a very young team with zero investment and no experience whatsoever. Many hadn't played together as a team either.

It was kind of what Lambert is attempting at Aston Villa, but in the Championship, with poorer players for the larger part.

We have a far better squad with a far better mix of ages and experience.

It may well still fail, but it is not the same situation at all.

Yes would be very interesting to see how the protests go if we buy a couple of other high quality players in the right positions.

That's why this could be slightly different to other seemingly dodgy appointments/sacking
s in the past - if Cortese backs up his ambitions with next-level signings, the fans may soon suffer from short term memory loss.

So, to avoid looking like you're backtracking at the first sign of cash, try not to protest too aggressively until the transfer window has shut :}

Have been a saints fan as long as I can remember went to my first game as in 1974 as a 6 year old , I have seen all the highs and the lows and just because NA has been in my eyes disgracefully sacked I will continue to support my team for as long as I live , but don't kid yourself that chairmen don't stick there noses into team affairs , having played under a dozen managers and numerous chairmen I can name half of those managers , where there was outside interference on team matters from the chairmen, that's not to say they picked the team but pressure put on to play certain players or not play others .
NA liked to do things his way which makes you unpopular with some supporters, players and the chairmen which puts a strain on chairmen/ manager relationship .
If cortese is brave enough to make the decision to sack NA he should be brave enough to leave MP to do things his own way .

"successful" - hopefully "long" - very improbably.

You will all look like the mugs that you are in a couple of hours.
I can think of at least 10 players at saints who dont speak English as a first language, so what. IDIOTS!

However one of the reported reasons for the appointment of Poinsettia is his track record with the youth academy at Espanyol....a track record that does not appear to have collateral.

I'll give them 12 months max!
Probably generous but who knows? That's football for you.
Make up your mind Ospreysaint d you back Corteseºs choice or not. And its a little irritating that like one or two others I care not to mention you seem to enjoy slagging off fellow Saints fans merely because you think you know better.
I am enjoying reading a lot of the ill informed comments from fans who simply have no idea who Pochettino is or what he achieved at Espanhol. As I have already said Cortese is no fool and has just appointed a seriously talented coach who turned the equivalent of Brentford into a team capable of beating Barcelona at the Nou Camp. Id appoint him as well to be frank..

How quickly some people move on. Wow.
.. and how slowly some are to come to terms with reality. Can you reverse what has happened?
