Adam Lallana getting close to return from injury for Southampton

Adam Lallana is winning his fitness battle and could return to the Saints squad this week.

The midfielder damaged medial knee ligaments in the win over Reading on December 8 but is on course for a return just shy of eight weeks later.

Saints were hoping to get Lallana back at the start of next month, but he may be able to return slightly ahead of schedule with the 24-year-old touch and go to make the trip to Old Trafford on Wednesday.

If he isn’t considered ready for that game, Saints are hoping to have their captain available for the trip to Wigan on Saturdau.

It will be a welcome boost for new Saints boss Mauricio Pochetinno who will have to make the decision on whether to chuck Lallana straight in or ease him in gently from the bench.

Though Saints have been enjoying a decent run of late, they have actually only won one of the eight games in which Lallana has missed.

That solitary victory came at Aston Villa. Saints have only lost two in that period – to Sunderland and Chelsea in the FA Cup – with league draws against Fulham, Stoke, Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton.

Lallana’s return will also give Pochettino almost a full squad to choose from. Only centre half Jose Fonte remains out with his knee injury with the latest estimate for his return still a few weeks away.

New defender Vegard Forren will also be considered for a debut at Old Trafford. Pochettino could opt to stick with Maya Yoshida and Jos Hooiveld as a centre half pairing after they kept a clean sheet in his first game against Everton.

However, the Norwegian centre half will be considered for the United game.

Put the new guy in but save Adam until "properly" fit.

I think RVP's movement will cause too many problems for Jos, who seems to get caught ball watching on occasion.

But if he does start, then hope he proves me wrong.

Agree as well. However I would go 433 against Utd. Couple of reasons - the first is this high pressing game - Spider Cork and JWP in the middle - Guly Punch and Rickie up top.

We then have Jay Gaston Steve and Chappers as back up.

And Jos will get mullered by WR and RVP so Forren to start.

Ease him in gently. Maybe the bench on Wednesday.

The team has done fine without him but, as someone mentioned on an earlier thread, when you have the free-scoring giants that are Cork and Schneiderlin in central midfield, you really need those further up the pitch to be getting goals to take pressure off of the strikers; Adam (like Punch) does that.

However, conversely, hasn't Guly done well, not least in his defensive support? We all reckoned he was better at home than away but I think the help he gives Shaw could be vital on Wednesday.

I like it better when old fergie, bless him, blushes with fury at being turned over by inferiors as far as he's concerned. You have too give it to the Wiley old fox, he always has something up his sleeve, re their last fa cup visit at st mary's for their second goal. Very cheeky, but it worked.
It's all about attitude and style. Something we are beginning to see consistently from Saints. Would be a good game. RvP is as ever an enigma, how do you mark one of them?
3 points for the taking if we play as well or better than our current form suggests.

Realistically, I'd be more than happy to take the draw from them on Wednesday.

Dreaming of a 3-2 win for us, though! Preferably, with 2 goals for "Licky Rambert" to take his Saints tally to the 100 mark against "the mighty Utd"! (I have a feeling he'd love that, too)

I'd love to see Lallana play, but fear it may be too early to give him the full 90 and have a bad memory of him coming off early against Utd earlier in the season. If he gets a run out, I'd rather see him come off the bench for the last 30 and keep him fresh for Saturday.
Debut for Forren would also be nice to see, maybe alongside Maya?

I've sent my first e mail to Mauricio vis a vis the Manure clash. My main advice is to adopt the successful tactics used at Goose Green in the Falklands.

First, establish a deep elastic defence formation at the back and initially employ only limited skirmishing from Rickie, reconnaissance infiltration from Punch and probing Gaston/Luke patrols.

Start the second half with a fierce aerial bombardment and then generate feigned central attacks by Spiderman and Corky followed by swift breakthroughs on the flanks to create panic.

Then adopt the classic 'hammer and anvil' to crush the opposition and force surrender.

I concluded: "The Manure fans will be retreating to their cars in droves before the end - just like the blinkin' Argies did Mauricio!"

Strangely, he has not replied yet.

If nothing is heard before Weds morning, however, a face to face meeting (with witnesses) may be requested.

No, The only upset will be when you realise that:
a) You can't borrow any more players on Month loans.
b) you have to ground share with Havant & Waterlooville unless you actually pay Chanrai what you owe him!

You come on here chatting about how bad saints are, what they will/won't do, who they will/won't sign and how Cortese hasn't paid a couple of little bills - How much did your boys rip people off for over the last few years???

Pretty sure they tried to scam the tax payers, too! HMRC winding up order ring any bells?

(I have a feeling he'd love that, too) I'd love to see Lallana play, but fear it may be too early to give him the full 90 and have a bad memory of him coming off early against Utd earlier in the season. totally agree! but i think you'll find it's spelt Ricky Lambert....
It is Rickie not Ricky, that is his correct Christian name, not Richard either.

Oh dear - I forgot Mauricio is a corned beefer.

I will amend the idea to suggest instead we adopt my grand uncle Herbie's successful tactic at Tobruk.

Long expecting a Spring attack on their trench from Jerry, my uncle Herbie's platoon had collected all their pee and poo in buckets for two months prior. Then on the morning of the attack, they immediately retreated in faked panic - but not before they filled their trench with the all the pee and poo.

As he told me: "Jerry rushed over thinking we wuz beat an' was scarperin' w'' the wind up. They jumped in our trench all full of 'emselves like."

"And then we 'eard 'em.....

"Aaaaaargh....uuurgh
....alles scheissen unt pisse!"

"We ran straight back and took the lot of 'em chanting: 'Sie dreckig Deutche Bastardes!, Sie dreckig Deutche bastardes!"

I haven't worked out the details yet for the Manure battle, but needless to say Puncheon will be our key man.

But if there was one small difference between us I'd say it might possibly be the fact we could almost certainly beat fcuking Hartlepool.
only in the premier league we get 14.000 more fans every home game on average.do your sums and work out how much 32, pound a ticket times 14.000 .when you get the total .add the same number up times 19 .when you gwet your total .that his how much the difference is to what saints bring in .hardly pot kettle black.no comparision .can hardly compare .to a small club .were not massive like liverpool man u arsenal .but were certainley bigger than you ,dont compare

Guilty as charged, I like to hear what other posters think of what is happening as it is happening, didn't you find the FA Cup scores on Sunday a wee bit amusing, seeing the big names getting beaten amuses my footballing sense of humour. I hold an interest in any of our Southern teams, and Skates losing is mildly amusing to say the least. You don't have to read the posts do you? Not everybody has the access that you claim, I know of a couple of our overseas posters who like to log on to the Echo threads just to get updates. I would rather not bicker with our fishy friends, even less bicker with Saints fans, sorry to have annoyed you.

It's the same on the News site.

Trying to wind them up, I posted on there to say that when Alan, my pet centipede, lost a leg in a fight with a beetle, he didn't seem bothered about it at all. I also pointed out that whilst ants are usually a bit annoying, every ant is capable of carrying twenty times its own weight. - so twenty ants could help if you lost your hands in an accident and needed some help to move a crisp.

They just ignored me. Do you think flies would annoy them?

Guilty as charged, I like to hear what other posters think of what is happening as it is happening, didn't you find the FA Cup scores on Sunday a wee bit amusing, seeing the big names getting beaten amuses my footballing sense of humour. I hold an interest in any of our Southern teams, and Skates losing is mildly amusing to say the least. You don't have to read the posts do you? Not everybody has the access that you claim, I know of a couple of our overseas posters who like to log on to the Echo threads just to get updates. I think you are very rude.

I offered you a sardine and you haven't had the good grace to reply. It's left over from pike fishing yesterday, only got a few teeth marks and most of the tail is missing, but otherwise it's in quite good condition. Seems a shame to waste it.

This is good news about Lallana.

Which brings me to reflect on all the good news we have..

- We are playing well...
- Our squad is strong, and young, and we are gaining confidence with excellent results and exciting play on the field
- W are moving up the table in the hardest league in the world
- We have appointed once of the most exciting and respected young managers in europe.
- We have incredible support
- We are solvent
- We can buy players when we want to

So frankly I don't give a monkeys about players from yesteryear demanding a face to face meeting because their feelings have been hurt. Diddums .. I am not interested in who has been banned or who has been shown the door .. I am even less interested in managers from relegation bound clubs jumping up to complain about sackings when in fact they are probably next to go themselves.

I am interested in seeing this club become a European contender and with Cortese in charge that is a real possibility. Even more so with Pochettini in charge. Even more so with outr exciting young team... even more so with our undoubted quality of support

So to sum up FFS CHEER UP !!

I think you are very rude.

I offered you a sardine and you haven't had the good grace to reply. It's left over from pike fishing yesterday, only got a few teeth marks and most of the tail is missing, but otherwise it's in quite good condition. Seems a shame to waste it.

(I have a feeling he'd love that, too) I'd love to see Lallana play, but fear it may be too early to give him the full 90 and have a bad memory of him coming off early against Utd earlier in the season. If he gets a run out, I'd rather see him come off the bench for the last 30 and keep him fresh for Saturday. Debut for Forren would also be nice to see, maybe alongside Maya?

This is great news about Lalana and I agree this line up. I have a feeling the boys could cause an upset at old Trafford I hope they do!!!!!!!!!
The only upset will b for the stains when they know theres no new signings 4U
No, The only upset will be when you realise that: a) You can't borrow any more players on Month loans. b) you have to ground share with Havant & Waterlooville unless you actually pay Chanrai what you owe him! You come on here chatting about how bad saints are, what they will/won't do, who they will/won't sign and how Cortese hasn't paid a couple of little bills - How much did your boys rip people off for over the last few years??? Pretty sure they tried to scam the tax payers, too! HMRC winding up order ring any bells?
ha. 43 million in debt. Cortese wont play t builders 4 work at staplewood. wont pay 4 messing up benali's house. banning ur x players from t ground. ripped off hmrc n t aviva pensioners for t ground. kettle, pot etc
You're right. We're pretty much in the same boat aren't we? But if there was one small difference between us I'd say it might possibly be the fact we could almost certainly beat fcuking Hartlepool.

Sh!tmouth 1 Hartlepool 3 is very funny though.
A lot of people on here give us stuff on current and historic results, but nobody tells us what future results will be.

I'll ask my grandma if she can get old Gypsy Nell to do us a regular forecast. Grandma says old Nell is brilliant and is 100% accurate 73% of the time.

It was Nell who shocked and traumatized my poor Grandma by not only predicting that my granddad would be murdered in his bed in a savage and bloody knife attack, but amazingly, by also correctly predicting that grandma would get away with it.

I slipped Nell a tenner and she says Manure 2 (Rooney, Van Percy) - Saints 3 (Lambert, Puncheon 2).

She said: "That Puncheon, I reckons 'e be sh!t orf a shovel an' no mistake."

That is without gate receipts for this season and every home gate we have is bigger than any yours during your last stay in the premiership when you couldn't even fill 20,000 stadia ie chelsea around 18000 and chelsea section was a sell out.

When will you go away. Consider the following:

In administration

No money

Losing regularly

Hardly any players

No manager

No academy

No training ground

Poor performances

Disgruntled fans

Just about to fold

Weigh all of that in the balance to what Saints have.

Quod erat demonstrandum!!!!!!!

I could cheer up if the man who created 4 of these positive situations hadn't been sacked. Or hadn't you noticed? As for the new man, nothing he has done compares to the man we have sacked, so we will have to wait before heaping any praise on him.

But if there was one small difference between us I'd say it might possibly be the fact we could almost certainly beat fcuking Hartlepool.
only in the premier league we get 14.000 more fans every home game on average.do your sums and work out how much 32, pound a ticket times 14.000 .when you get the total .add the same number up times 19 .when you gwet your total .that his how much the difference is to what saints bring in .hardly pot kettle black.no comparision .can hardly compare .to a small club .were not massive like liverpool man u arsenal .but were certainley bigger than you ,dont compare
So this season the skates have taken in £5,506,304 and saints have taken in from ticket sales £11,642,177. That is quite a difference. That's not taking into account of hospitality, plus another £6,791,232 for the remaining 7 games for saints = £18,433,409. Skates to take in £3,539,520 for the rest of the season in total = £9,045,824. That is using average attendencs for the season so far and £32 pound a ticket For both, I'm guessing skate tickets are cheaper so they will take in less. Rough guess on income for ticket sales. Does that cover saints wages? Maybe not but with T.V right, commercial and other things I'm sure they are with money to spare.

No it wasn't. It was too Few fans. Not enough of you to pay your way, even with the cheating and stealing from charities. And now, in your hour of need, where are you? I don't know but I do know you're not attending Fratton Park and your not pledging. You will be so embarrassed when your fans takeover ends in liquidation.

as for poopey i do find it slightly ironic that a team whos `fans` mention trophy in every sentence have had a player that no one has heard off leave after his rather long 1 month contract was up to, and this is so funny, "win trophys"!
a nobody player leaving a nothing team and its headline news for them! and they are moaning at him for not wanting to wear the shirt! well who would? things must be so bad that i doubt they do the washing that much and no doubt he has had to borrow the shirt from the previous player who had it. have the players been tiold to swaps shirts after an away game to any other team in blue so that the can get a new kit?
Almost as funny is that in the same article, in the comments, they're hailing their amazing 9300 attendance!

I nearly wet myself laughing, especially as that falls 7100 behind our WORST league 1 attendance!

I am not sure he has any choice, it doesn't look like anyone is coming in, the only rumours are all spurious. I personally think we need a couple of newbies just to give us a bit of lift, difficult to say what positions though. I always tend to be too sentimental, but I am sure that some of our existing squad could be replaced.

He was bought to help get us to the Prem. Perhaps the problem for him was that we made the grade whilst he was injured....either way, it would seem to me that he is gonna struggle to get a start in our current squad.

We all want new signings...but we also have to do some off-loading.

trouble Is bill they're all on good money,so thats why other clubs are a bit shy on signing them.and thats the reason for loans instead of permanent deals.my guess is the club will just let them go for free at the end of their conracts.

even more remarkable when you think that some of thosr players, spider davis and lalla all were with saints in the championship prior o the admin and relegation. those players have done wonders for the club and the club has done well to keep them.
still cant get over the fact that rickie lambert only cost £1mill.

With Forren's arrival we now have cover at the back fom one of Yoshi or Jose being injured.

I only really worry about what happens if one of Cork or Spiderman is out for a few weeks.

Other than that, I'm reasonably content. We have a good enough team but in honesty we're still a bit weak for injury cover. We'll need a following wind to get through, though I'm still predicting Wet Spam to drop below us, which will help.

Also remember that half the deals done seem to be on the last day of the window so there's still movement possible.

I said at te start of this window that I wasn't going to get drawn into worrying about it and I'm not.

We can survive as we are; another midfielder and I think we're out of danger.

Good point - hopefully his new, better relationship with NC might lead him in the right direction.

Once he does, though, he needs to keep working as hard as he has been while the contract's been in the balance.

really ?
Really, really. Couldn't agree more Velleity, maybe another rock in midfield and we'll be fine. Hopefully Billy will be able to prove himself in the Prem next season :-)

Boruc Clyne Shaw Yos Fos JWP Cork Spider Guly Punch Rickie Davis Davis Chappers Fox Jay Gaston Jos 1-1
This is great news about Lalana and I agree this line up. I have a feeling the boys could cause an upset at old Trafford I hope they do!!!!!!!!!
Guly out!! Would be great line up with Gaston playing... Lallana to come on with 20 mins left, to add something 'different'

24 November 2009 Hartlepool 1–3 Saints
23 March 2010 Saints 3–2 Hartlepool
22 February 2011 Hartlepool 0 – 0 Saints
25 April 2011 Saints 2 – 0 Hartlepool

10 points out of 12, not a bad record against them :-)
