Norwich boss: We deserved penalty

Chris Hughton Chris Hughton

Norwich manager Chris Hughton was adamant his side deserved a penalty against Saints, even if they didn’t get it for the right incident.

The Canaries were controversially handed the chance to win the match deep into added time when Luke Shaw was judged to have bundled over Grant Holt in the area.

Referee Mark Clattenburg, after consulting with his assistant, awarded the spot kick, only for Saints keeper Artur Boruc to come to the rescue with a superb save from Holt.

The decision to penalise Shaw had infuriated the visiting players as well as manager Mauricio Pochettino, and even his opposite number Hughton clearly felt it was a generous decision.

But the Canaries boss said Saints were lucky not to have had a penalty awarded against them earlier in the match.

“We certainly should have been given a penalty in the first half when Shaw pulls back Grant Holt, so on balances we deserved one today.

“Grant has got himself ball side of the defender, and I think there is contact, so the referee has to make that decision, and he also has a linesman on that side.

“If we think that one was soft, the one in the first half wasn’t.

“It was not a particularly bad penalty, and the lad has made a good save.”

Hughton conceded that, had the spot kick been converted, it would have been a harsh result on Saints. “It was not one of our better performances, but the conditions were not easy,” he said.

“If you are speaking to our back four and the midfield two, they are probably more delighted we have got the clean sheet.

“Overall it was between two teams who are fighting hard for their lives and so in the end a draw was probably a fair result.”

From what I've read of various match reports Saints deserved 3 points.

Then they got what they deserved, not our fault that they missed it.

I don't think the first incident was a penalty either. Not a single person appealed for one and that includes Grant Holt! Maybe someone got in his ear at half time and told him to make a bit more of meal of the next tackle?

Oh well now we move on to Liverpool which should be a game to watch based on both teams style of play.

I have quite a lot of time for Hughton...perhaps he will reflect that what he has made is an absurd statement trying to deflect the truth that it was a blatant dive.

The first incident Shaw had hold of his shirt, whether he "hauled he back" as Hanson put it, is rather debatable

Why is Chris Hughton pictured wearing a Birmingham top? Cheaper?

Regardless of anything that happened during the game it wasn't a penalty, just the usual incompetence from Twattenburg. Therefore they didn't deserve to get it. What they did deserve though, they got. i.e. a great penalty save..... nice one Artur.

Holt is a 20 stone whale, no way could a 16 year old be able to bully him off the ball, to call Holt a fat rickie Lambert is a insult to rickie, Holt is a clumsy donkey, but that's an insult to clumsy donkey, Holt is just a steaming pile of elephant dung!.

I didn't think it was a penalty, Holt clearly stepped infront of Shaw, which was away from the direction of the ball, who didn't have time to stop, so the natural reaction is to put your hands up onto the back of the player to stop yourself.

I sympathise with Holt and don't think he tried to cheat anybody. I was reading a book called 'Homework for Adults' at the weekend which tells you all about the things you have forgotten since you left school and in the physics section it clearly explains why a belly that big would make you lose balance and the forces of gravity would make you fall over like a big girls blouse. The book also reminded me about being too fat (so said Mr Bywater - the tosser) to play for 90 minutes and being so tired that i couldn't kick the ball from the penalty spot in to the goal at the end of the PE session. It is all very obvious to me why he fell over and then missed the penalty.

No one seems to have mentioned the other inccident with Shaw at the other end when, according to Radio Solent, Shaw was fouled in the Norwich penalty area and the trough he created was well inside the box, but the ref gave the free-kick a metre outside the box?!!!***

Your not wrong there bungy the commentators on solent seemed certain it was in the area but watching highlights back not one mention of it

The linesman was awful. He couldn't keep up with the game in the first half and missed loads of offsides and gave the wrong decisions on several throw ins' and corners.
Add the ingredients of "I want to be centre of attention Twattenburg" and "Cheating Blobby Holt" and I'm surprised we managed to get anything at all.
Are there any decent officials left????...because if there are we don't seem to get them very often

Saints have had one dodgy decision go FOR them all season (the penalty against Villa) but I hate to think of the dreadful 8 or 9 against, including this one!!

Clattenburg is a total clown. Ever since he gained notoriety from that Chelsea game it's like he wants to be the centre of attention. It would have been a travesty had we lost that game. Norwich were/are poor.
I hope the guy wearing the pompey shirt after the game crashed his car into the snow on the way home too.

Yeah. Give us a decent unbiassed ref this weekend please. Are there any out there? As for the Poopey fan well you'd think they would be too embarrassed to wear a shirt like that.
