Le Saux urges Saints to fight off interest in Shaw

LUKE SHAW LUKE SHAW

GRAEME Le Saux has urged Saints to keep Luke Shaw longer than they did Gareth Bale.

Bale was a virtual unknown in the Saints Academy when Le Saux arrived for a two-year spell with the club almost a decade ago.

He made his debut within a year of Le Saux’s retirement before signing for Spurs after just one full season in the first team.

Spurs have also been linked with Shaw in recent weeks, while Arsenal’s interest has been well documented.

Shaw is the same age Bale was during his season as the club’s first-choice left-back – and is expected to sign a five-year deal when he turns 18 in July.

Le Saux hopes he stays for the duration.

The former England left-back said: “Gareth was being mentioned as a promising player when I was at Southampton and it’s been great to see him fulfil his potential over the years.

“Southampton should be very proud of their involvement in the development of players like him, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

“But if I was manager of Southampton I would want to convince the club to keep players like Luke for a few more years.”

Le Saux saw Shaw live up to his burgeoning reputation during the 3-1 win against Liverpool at St Mary’s on Saturday, before pulling out of tonight’s England Under-21 friendly against Romania.

He continued: “I’ve been very impressed, he’s obviously fit and confident and very fast up the flank. He’s often marauding forward and getting a good cross in.

“Full-backs who get forward and create chances like Luke and Nathaniel Clyne are absolutely vital, especially with teams tending to play much more narrowly these days.

“Luke’s had a wonderful first season and generated a lot of interest and speculation which can only be positive.

“He can become a wonderful player and, realistically, Southampton can’t hold players back and stop them from fulfilling their potential.

“But there’s a balance and it would be good to see them keep hold of their young players for longer than they have done in the past, which will help establish them in the Premier League again and attract more players.

“Southampton can’t compete with the biggest clubs but they’ve created a fantastic environment in which to nurture players.

“It’s a really happy place for young players and that counts for a lot.”

This is the litmus test for me on whether Saints really are going to challenge for the top half of the table or not.
Got to keep quality player like Shaw on board if we are to do that.
Let's get away from the idea that we are a selling club and build a really good strong team of top quality talent - the more that comes from our own academy the better.

However, let's get this season out of the way first.

Saints don't need to sell there prize assets and Luke is one of these for sure. Both Luke Shaw and NethanIal Clyne will be the the England full backs for years to come. At the game last Saturday and it was clear to all of the 32K people in the Stadium Glen Johnson was a mile behind both of them but there time will come!!!!

I'm sure we did try to keep Walcott, Bale etc for longer than we did, but once the kids have their heads turned by big wages at bigger clubs, what can you do. We'll try and keep Shaw for as long as possible, but if he wants to go, there isnt a lot you can do about it.

Saints are no longer a selling club...unless it suits us, after all no one stays forever (unlss you are MLT). Luke only has to look at Bale, Oxo and Theo to see that leaving Saints can put you backwards initially. At his age, he's better off here. If/When he's sold, Cortese will get the best deal for us and another great player will trundle off our assembly line.

Well said, alanrr. It's yet more insidious corporate advertising, now being inserted directly into sports news stories. As if we're not drowning in enough advertising already.

Journalists and editors used to swear blind that there was a 'firewall' between news content and advertising. Always a highly dubious claim, of course. But the overwhelming desperation for newspapers to attract advertising revenue to stay afloat means the mythical 'firewall' is crumbling in full public view.

Spot on.

Staying in this league is our core objective this season. The poor early start is behind us but has left a legacy that we are now having to deal with.

But what a team we have now!!

Next season should see us much higher in the table, but its dependent on keeping a high quality core squad and Shaw must become part of that.

Talk of loyalty is always good to hear but money talks very loudly. I suppose we will have to match such offers or lose out when contracts are up... but not before !

One thing is for sure - we don't have to sell these days - and that means that if you are under contract and considered a key player, Cortese will not let you go. The so called big clubs, the agents and the players are going to have to get used to that.

warrens 76 says...
9:20am Thu 21 Mar 13

Would that be the same Le Saux who left us double quick..

Anyway I think that the players and their agents need to start asking as 'terms of contract' whether the club showing interest is actually solvent!

Regardless of how much a player is being offered just how secure is it, particularly under new financial fairplay rules..

Youngsters need to be encouraged that they need to know that they and their families future is safe....

..that would start to get them thinking that perhaps the grass is not greener on the other side.

Luke’s going nowhere! As he said on the official site, he’s agreed a deal that he will then sign when he’s 18. Exactly the same as what JWP did. Don’t forget the Ox was a completely different story. Him and his Dad knew exactly what they were doing. The greedy sh!ts were always gonna jump ship as soon as Wenger started his mating calls. I believe Nicola knew this so got a cracking deal. From what I’ve heard, Luke’s much more down to Earth and is in on the ambition the club has.

I genuinely believe that Southampton FC is somewhere where wonderful players can come to fulfil their potential rather than a stepping stone to a "big" club

It will be very interesting to see Cortese's stance over transfers. One thing is for sure we certainly won't be bullied anymore. We currently have a number of players who may well be targets for some of the bigger clubs. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see some of these held to the terms of their contracts. Cortese seems to have sold his vision to our players so hopefully they will want to stay on board to see it through. We still have a bit of work to do this season but if things go to plan next season could be very exciting indeed. Top six no problem.

In this harsh commercial football world where players and managers are shown no long term loyalty by clubs and chairmen, it is hard to demand long term loyalty from the players in return.
We all want him to stay, okay pay him huge wages and get us into Europe and then there is a chance. As things stand we haven't yet secured our place in the EPL for next year.
I like NC and think he is a good chairman but we know he is ruthless, and you shouldn't expect the players that work for him and their agents to be any less ruthless.

Tottenham are now finding it difficult to hold onto Bale and Liverpool to Suarez so we are not the olny club with this problem.

The day he signs that new 5 year contract this summer can't come soon enough for me.

This current side seems to play as one and have taken the vision on board. I'm sure some heads could be turned by the top clubs but if they do go it will be for top dollar. Everybody has a value in football. Just the three you have mentioned would surely bring in over £30Mil. Put that with next year's SKY money and a full stadium every week and I think we would be in a very strong position to buy replacements. Would be a great shame though as these players know each others game and could be awesome in a year or two.

I think that Cortese is set on breaking up the current, so-called, "bigger club" monopoly on the top four slots by propelling Saints to regular Champions' League football. We're a big city club moving upwards and wiser players like Shaw can see that. It's just paper talk - Shaw knows he's onto a good thing at England's best club - he will be a Saint next season, for sure.

The investment has been phenomenal, and is proof that the club intends to be ranked aomngst the biggest in the Premier league.once we secure our place in the Premier league this season, the club can start planning for next season and there will be additions designed to take us to the next level and one or two may find themselves promoted to the first team squad, matt Target and Chambers and perhaps Stephens. All this talk about Saints struggling to hold on to players is a real irritation it is no surprise that all have extended their contracts this season bar Boruc.I expect Saints to be top half next season, and further up the year after that.So any club that wrongly considers itself to be bigger can simply forget trying to poach our players and can put their borrowed money where the sun doesnt shine. You are just plain stupid if you think Saints would be prepared to sell any of their first team squad. The trouble with many of you is that you havent moved on from the days at the Dell, small minds, small club, no ambition other than staying in the top flight, you need to wake up change your mentality before the club begins to suffer. All clubs respond to the ambtions of their fans and too many of you have their heads buried in the sand and just have no real understanding of what is going on at Southampton. Do you think that a man like Cortese would stay another five minutes unless there was ambition to take us to the top table? For christ sakes wake up people ,stop behaving like parochials, sorry but I find it irritating that three years on people still have not bought into the clubs obvious ambition and are light years behind mentally and still thinking of Saints as a small club.Sorry but I find it frustrating!!!!!No offence intended though..COYS

Cortese will undoubtably dig his heels in if a club comes in for a player he doesn't want to sell.

It's multi sided though, if we want to keep these players we have to make them want to stay not just try and force them to stay. That means competing in the wage market and on the football pitch.

This is the fourth season in which we have moved forward from the previous season - whilst that improvement and ambition continues why go somewhere else? If we reach a level and stagnate there, if seasons become just more of the same, then expect players and the manager to move on to further their careers. I'm sure Cortese sees this and will keep pushing forward, he doesn't strike me as someone who settles for second best.

Quite agree Seed. Why woud Nicola bring our club into the 22nd century spending money big time at the trainng ground?
We have all witnessed his ambitions for the club by the way he changes things at the club to take us forward. At first a lot of fans, me included, thinks he is way off the mark. But then the man just sits back and waits for us to see his ambitions unfold.
I think the days when the so called big clubs can steal our best players are fast disappearing and in fact we will see the best players wanting to come to us.
Players like Luke will see this and i think will want too stay. Our manager has already stated that he already has targets that he wants to join us next season and is working on that happening. Sit tight, strap yourselves in and hang on for one hell of a ride. COYR.

The Final Countdown

Twenty

They're leaving together
But still it's farewell
And maybe they'll come back
To the league, who can tell?

I guess there are many to blame
They're leaving their ground (leaving their ground)
Will things ever be the same again?
It's the final Countdown!

Will Shaw be sold? I suppose it depends if he's good enough for the future English and (then) European Champions. Personally, I think he is and we'll choose to keep him but if we find better, Tagget for example, then in a year or two we might be tempted to move him on to one of the lesser English clubs such as, say, Arsenal or Spurs.

Stay up and these players will not be going anywhere. They know the culure at the club is one of continuous progress and expect to be competing in the top half of the division, and a strong campaign to win a serious trophy, next season.

When SAINTS go to loan a Player - they should continue to do so in the LOWER LEAGUES.

When SAINTS SELL - They should do so in EUROPE and WORLDWIDE.

NEVER SELL TO ONE OF OUR COMPETITORS IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE !!

WE ARE THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON.... !!!

UP THE PREMIER LEAGUE WE GO !!!

COYR.
Too true Bob. Were a buying club not a selling club now.

No chance we will sell especially for 8 million. We are building for the future with our best young players so why would we sell. These other so called bigger clubs can forget about taking our prize assets as we will be competing with them sooner rather than later. COYR

Hello there, wondered where you'd been. How are you finding things on this site? I suppose its worth getting used to it as soon there will be nowhere else to go.

Welcome to the Premier League, a squad packed with future England players, a great ground, massive support, big wins against big clubs. Truly the biggest club on the south coast, with Brighton and Bournemouth some way behind us but always hopeful.

Enjoy.

Im sorry but I am sickened by some of the inane comments from some fans who have simply no percetion what Saints are all about these days. People like le Saux are completely out of touch, Merson is another, they simply dont understand the transformation that is being brought about by Cortese at Southampton. Take a look at the facilities, they are amongst the very best on the world the likes of Tottenham Liverpool have nothing that compares with what we have. Stop writing drivel Echo!!!!!
A very interesting comment was made by ''Talksport'' after the City game ........ The commetator said '' after a game you can tell by the support set up rolled out on to the pitch the money in a club , the sun lamps, Rollers etc and apart from the Manchester Clubs Saints look better set up than any other club we have visited this season '' .............. '' If what I see in front of me is anything to go by, then Saints have a great future ''

Luukkkeee will I hope sign the already agreed great contract and NC will seriously invest in Poch's Spanish hopes .............

If all goes to plan in the next 8 games , next year is going to be wicked ..........

think its difficult the boys a chelsea fan i kinow he wont go to liverpool forget that one .wages ia issue for example walcott chamberlain moved on double wages .and we cant do a pompey and break are wage structure.so you want loyalty but if they want more money they will go a bit like arsenal players going to man city which without there rich owners i supect they would still be arsenal; players .i mean theos on 100.000 a week alex 70.000 a week .being realistic we cant match clubs in the c league wage wise .spurs may lose bale if they dont get in that this season
i dont want to lose luke but i dont want us to increase arev wage bill to keep players here.we know what happens and qpr not long from now will pay a heavey price already reported 90 million in debt after 6 weeks wages remi samba not the way to go .were southampton not portsmouth

of course expanding the stadium will help revenue and this will be completed soon as possible insuring avoiding relegation.it needs to be done so we can do it with revenue coming in .i believe we will stick to a budget if we try sign players they must fit into that .and i think thats were buttner and caultino wanted more money .its said buttner gets 60.000 a week tino 70.000 a week glad we missed them as far as im concerned

We all know Southampton FC finances changed when the Club was bought, they are of course being run as it should be, a Business, a Business has to generate money and make profit and work within a Budget, in the passed Southampton FC sold Players who didn't want Div 1 or Championship Football but importantly to survive, that is now a thing of the past, Players who were sold for Millions also get a cut and a Teenage Player becoming a Millionaire is something they cannot ignore which is sometimes helped on by Parents and Agents, many thought that with Oxlaid Chamberlain, in Football a young talented Player sold for millions could sustain an injury and never play again so they grasp the Carrot when it's dangled and be set up financially for life, Football is very physical and one bad tackle can finish a Player at any age, Southampton are now pleased to have a Squad of World and first class Players and can match Wages with most Club, let's be grateful that the Club is solvent and has a man who knows how to run a Business, like him or loathe him Mr Cortese, I believe I'm correct in saying and I boast to many, Southampton are the only Club in English Football that are solvent, if I'm wrong please shoot me down
