The British Carp Angling Championship on Todber Manor’s Big Hayes saw two of the top pairs go through despite suffering badly in the draw.

Kev Grout and Matt Wylde came out of the draw in 10th place and, with all the fancied swims already gone, chose the point swim, writes Mark Simmonds.

Fishing with a combination of zig rigs and p.v.a bags and boilies, they finished the match with an impressive 16 fish for 213lb 3oz – double the weight of their nearest rivals – and go through to the semi-finals on Barston Lake.

England internationals Kia Sanger and Jack Stamp also suffered at the draw bag, coming out in eighth, but undeterred put in a great effort to land seven carp for 103lb 12oz.

The pair fished three-bait stringers over the top of eight kilos of C.C Moores Live System to book their place in the semi-finals for the third year in a row.

Third and final qualifying place went to Paul Crocker and Steve Meyer, who were second out of the draw bag and fished the favoured Monk swim to land eight carp for 100lb 3oz on Nash purple monster squid boilies.

Steve Blow and Phil Sanity just missed out on a place in the semi-finals after weighing eight carp for 98lb 6oz. In all an impressive 57 fish were landed in 24 hours despite heavy overnight frosts – again proving Todbers Big Hayes is a top venue for carp matches.
