Forren to fight for Saints place

Daily Echo: Forren to fight for Saints place Forren to fight for Saints place

Vegard Forren has rejected the chance to return to Norway on loan to stay and fight for his Saints place.

The 25-year-old Norwegian centre half joined Saints in January from Molde for a fee of £3.5m, but has yet to feature in a single minute of first team action.

His former Molde boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has admitted enquiring as to whether he could get his former charge back on loan to boost his side and get the Saints man some valuable game time.

However, Forren, left, is adamant he wants to report back for pre-season training with the rest of his Saints colleagues and fight for a first team place at St Mary’s.

“I am very fond of Molde and hope they do well,” he said. “But right now it’s not an option for me.”

Former Manchester United striker Solskjaer added: “I’ve talked to him about if it could be appropriate but it was not.”

Forren arrived in January but because Norway’s top division had finished its season in November last year, it was agreed at the time of his arrival that he was being signed with a view to next season, rather than the one just finished.

However, Saints have since signed another centre half in the shape of £8.5m man Dejan Lovren, which adds yet more competition to an area that also boasts the likes of Jose Fonte, Maya Yoshida and Jos Hooiveld.

Forren’s representative, Jim Solbakken, has gone on record in the past as being confident his man has a future at St Mary’s.

“When we took Vegard to Southampton it was obviously in the middle of the season (in England) and he came from holiday, so it was agreed he was going to build his fitness towards this summer’s pre-season and upcoming season,” he said.

“It is obviously a huge step for a player coming from Norway to the Premier League and it takes time.

“He is patient, ready and committed to that.

“We knew what was coming and we all agreed.”

The player has already received the endorsement of his fellow countryman and former Saints captain Claus Lundekvam, who said after his signing: “He’s the biggest centre half talent we have had in Norway for quite a while.

“He’s a very modern centre half.

“He’s very good on the ball and he reads the game well.

“He’s strong one-against-one, and he’s a bit like me in that he likes to play – he likes to start the attack and join in.”

If Forren and Lovren are as good as people are saying, then we will have quite a formidable defence with Boruc, Shaw and Clyne.
Midfielders Cork and Schiederlin are good enough to get into their Intl sides.
A decent winger and Leandro Damiao up front and we'll be sorted.

Can't wait till August

Forren came in the middle of the season and was unfit, and the management were wise by not playing him as it has given him time to adjust to English football, albeit with his teammates in training and thus not risking him being destroyed in a real match.

It will also give him time to adapt to England itself, and learn the language and culture, with his family. He is only human, and it is difficult to move from where you feel comfortable and go to live in another place. Cortese probably realised this through Gaston's struggles, and that was because it was difficult not only for the young man to come and play different football immediately, but move to a country the other side of the world immediately. That is one of the reasons he struggled this season, he needed time to adapt and not be thrown straight into the first team. I know that is not what we are looking for from a £12 million record signing, but he too is only human.

Forren looks like he could be the real deal and I think could do very well with our new defender Lovren. We have given him time to adapt, which I believe can only work to our advantage. Now he has had enough time, and we can begin to introduce him to first team football. Dragging out the process of playing him every week is a very clever move by us as it makes him the best player he can be.

More importantly, I can't even begin to comprehend why we are thinking of loaning him out just 6 months after signing him, just because he hasn't been playing in the first team.

When I played for Tianjin Tigers in the Northern Clothing Factory Workers Sunday League, I accepted a loan at Pudong Pandas. Big mistake.

I was put on 18 hour days cleaning the toilets, fixing roof leaks etc - and looking after the chairman's pigs and chickens.

I protested, but they said they were paying my wages - 10 Yuan a week and half a kilo of long-tailed shrimps - so it wasn't a loan at all; I'd been rented.

LOl it seems amazing to me that people have Forren in our first team, when he has never played a game in some four and half months of being with the club. Even on the last game of the season with nothing to play for he was left on the bench. To me that all speaks volumes.
In the last 28 games we conceed 32 goals, which is a far better defensive record than many teams. yes the defence has frailties, but then most defences have.
If you cannot get up to speed in 4-6 weeks of joining a club, then its unlikely you will. Yosh, Fonte and Hoov were all chosen in front of him for a reason.
Don't get me wrong, I will be well glad if I am proved wrong.
But let's be honest it was not the defence that let us down in the second half of the season, it was the attack, we created more chances a game than anyone and on that percentage converted less than anyone. We suffered by not being able to finish games off and need to improve on that if we are not going to be in a relegation scrap.

Must admit the new kit does make us look like a plastic Man U, very similar to one of their strips in the late eighties early nineties. Lacks any tradition and any real character. real opportunity wasted. I am sure a lot of people will buy it but a lot won't as well.
Think both kits are worth 4 out of 10 and the worst home kit in a decade. But then I am old and maybe old fashioned.

Don't like all white socks, pefer red with a bit of white somewhere, I do prefer black shorts, and am a stripe lover, but beggars can't be choosers, I will support the Team whatever they are wearing as long as the home kit has red and white in some degree. Playnig in black away will be like watching a team of Referees, or leisure time at the Mortuary, hope our performances don't reflect the colour.

As opposed to a plastic Stoke or Sunderland? Clearly ditching the stripes without even doing a poll of fans is not handling things well, but I do think people saying the new shirts will 'make us look like everyone else' are forgetting the numerous (and far less successful) clubs that play in stripes.

Um like Stoke or Sunderland? No!!!!! like SAINTS,red and white stripes are our traditional colours. being a Saints fan I thought you would know that JD.
We are famous for playing in stripes, its tradition and history.
Whilst I agree we are a new club, which was re-invented with administration, I prefer the tradition of red and white stripes, just my opinion. Not a red shirt that takes identity away from all of that.
As for the away kit if it had been black shirt and shorts with gold piping, it would of at least had the colour scheme of the away kit when I first started supporting Saints which was old gold shirts, black shorts and black and gold socks.

This whole Forren story stinks -why would a team fighting relegation, spend £3.5m on a player, in January, when, according to their Chairman Saints were in such a dire position, that he sacked the Manager, only to pay Forren's his wages every week and not play him for at the very least 7 to 8 months, if at all.
By the way Nicola did pay Solent Interiors after being forced to by British Justice!

The team haven't even reported back to training yet have they?! Hardly late! Next people will be complaining that we haven't made our summer signings by the end of January, ridiculous.
