Ben Ainslie targeted winning the America's Cup with a British team after playing his part in one of the most remarkable events in the competition's history.

Last night's victory in San Francisco Bay saw Oracle Team USA, who drafted in Ainslie partway through the competition, claim a 9-8 victory over Emirates Team New Zealand having trailed 8-1 last week.

While the four-time Olympic gold medallist's contribution was undeniable, no British boat has ever triumphed in the America's Cup - and that is something Lymington-based Ainslie is looking to change.

Ainslie said: "It would be great to get out a British boat next time. We have the sailors; it's just about getting the money together.

"Hopefully the excitement of what we have done has generated interest. The feedback I've been getting is amazing. The event started in Britain and it's about time we won it."

Last year, Ainslie formed Ben Ainslie Racing with the ultimate aim of competing in the America's Cup.
