DENNIS Rofe has spoken for the first time of the "disaster" which unfolded at Saints between Gordon Strachan leaving and the arrival of George Burley.

In a frank interview, the popular former first-team coach has described the departure of Paul Sturrock as "lunacy" and the controversial appointment of Sir Clive Woodward, pictured below, as "a big mistake" which "fragmented the club".

Rofe spanned more than 20 largely successful years as a player and a coach with Saints, but was one of many casualties among the first-team coaching staff during Woodward's brief tenure at St Mary's.

"I thought it was a big mistake to bring Clive Woodward in," said Rofe. "It fragmented the club - there are no two ways about that. It appeared that the appointment was made by the chairman. It was strange and caused a lot of sensationalism and unrest."
