Jay's debt to boss

Daily Echo: Jay Rodriguez Jay Rodriguez

Jay Rodriguez has credited Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino with bringing the best out of him.

The forward has been the club’s most potent goal threat under the Argentine, and scored twice in the 3-0 Boxing Day win at Cardiff.

Rodriguez’s total for the season has risen to eight in the Premier League, already two more than he managed last term.

“He’s given me the belief,” he said. “He’s backed me, he’s played me.

“I’ve played regular games and I think that’s important. He’s always given me the belief and the way we play I think suits me.

“We can try and get in behind the defence and hopefully be around the box to put the goals in, so it is nice at the moment and hopefully I can improve.”

Rodriguez added: “I think you’ve always got to have that inner confidence to believe that you can do the things you want to do in the game, but it’s nice obviously he’s brought it out of me since he has come in and it’s all credit to him really, because I’m really chuffed with what I’m doing.”

Rodriguez’s form since making his England debut, in mid-November against Chile, has been exceptional, with five goals in his last six games.

While he might not have made the sort of impact he would have liked on the Three Lions’ manager, Roy Hodgson, during his international bow, Rodriguez says the experience has greatly benefited him.

“It’s an honour to go and play for your country,” he said. “It brought me confidence, self-belief, and I think it’s just a great overall experience for me. It’s been good.

“I want to try and improve on my goalscoring, but it’s been a good experience for me.”

The 24-year-old insists he is not worrying about whether he could still make the World Cup squad or not.

“I just try and concentrate on my own performance and try and improve as a player,” he said.

“I think that’s the main thing for me.

“Week in and week out I need to try and get better and score more goals, and that’s all I can focus on “If it does come, it comes, and it will be unbelievable, but I’m just trying to be focused on the season really.”

Jay is really stepping up to the plate this season and probably one of the first names on the team sheet. He's getting the rewards now and is on a decent scoring run. Well done lad. Hats off to Poch also for having faith in him, it would have been easy to sacrifice Jay to play both SRL and Danni.

Liked Jay from day one and was in my opinion the most improved player last season. He will become our 20 goals a season man. Does he deserve to play for England, dam right but the way England play they don't deserve him

Not bad for a player who got nothing but flak for not being good enough not so long ago. I'd say he would be on the team sheet ahead of SRL at the moment. They were pretty good as a pairing at Cardiff though so I'd expect them both to start. Once we are two up bring on Dani to get the third and give Rickie a bit of a rest.

I know there are people on here who know how to go through the archive of posts from the past, and if said people are bored in the Christmas break, it would be interesting to go back and compare the quotes about Jay in his first 18 games for the Saints, with the quotes we've had about Dani "waste of money" Osvaldo from the first 18 games this season ............

Five minutes effort (Google "Rid of j-rod site:dailyecho.co.uk
") brings up:

Techsture: "Do us another favir Nigel and get rid of J-rod the guy is useless"

Norwegian Saint (hang your head in shame, Norge) "... Get rid of J-Rod and three points for us!". Also "J-Rod... Scored the goal but is, by far, our worst player. This guy is like playing with 10 men! Gives the free kick away leading to their second goal... He has had enough chances!"

And I looked up a very nice chap called Velleity "Sell J-Rod; after six games we have enough information to know that he's useless. A £7M player never takes time to find his feet in a new team in a new division." I claim irony as it was in a post that suggested replacing Adkins with Redknapp, buying bionic legs for Rickie and playing 8-1-1.

Opinions change and I wouldn't berate anyone for anything said in the heat of the moment however, players take time to settle. As I've said before, a mate of mine is an Arsenal supporter and he remembers people shouting off that Henri was useless an should be sold.

I expect very much the same thing to be said about Osvaldo; I think he'll gel. However, I was also shouting for people to give Ramirez time, so I seem to have been proven wrong on that front as well.

I'm just chuffed that J-Rod is on form. All last year and this, I was turning to Velleity Jr and saying that once JR started to score he'd be unstoppable. Then again, I said the same for a while about Gastón so I'm no saint on that front.

Good points above, including yours, Tony. It's a job for Velleity. I think he keeps these things in a scrapbook :-)

I was thinking of something similar but less arduous, maybe he could go through the threads that followed the Spurs game and see how many people posted negatively in those who didn't then follow it up with any comments after the win at Cardiff.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion but they look a bit foolish when they come on here with their 'I told you everything was dreadful, that this player or that player should be shot or that the manager got it wrong again' posts but have nothing to offer after a win or when those same players do okay or the manager seems to have had a good day.

You got there first! I'm firmly in the 'we've got to give Guly time' camp, me. As I've said before, unless a player disrespects the shirt or is clearly not trying (and that's hard to proof), then he'll get my backing.

There are players I think are not good enough, others I think have deserved more opportunities, but I have no time for the posts which make certain players out to be 100% brilliant or those which claim players are 100% useless.

(I bet you now go and find some post or other from 3 years ago when I ranted on about one of our players.)

Thanks, Velleity - I'm not knocking people changing their minds; I think having the ability and the strength to change your mind is a mark of intelligence and character; I have never, from the time I was born, been able to stand anyone who forms an opinion and then never changes it ....

I just wish that people would think a little before they post "we are going to get relegated now" every time we lose, or "great - champion's league here we come" when we win, or - as an example - "Gazza out" when he lets in goals where the defence hung him out to dry, at a time when he's trying to build his confidence. Perspective and the long picture, that's what I say.

Then again, I always voted for Benali as player of the year, so what do I know about football ...

I agree totally (the search above was just for a bit of fun); we all make mistakes but they generally come when we see the word as black or white only with no shades or nuances between. People saying "sell Osvaldo" should be aware of this. Time will tell.

We're getting the same with Hoover. He kept Jose out of the side for a significant part of last year and now, suddenly, he is totally, utterly and completely useless. Unlikely, IMHO.

There are players I think are not good enough, others I think have deserved more opportunities, but I have no time for the posts which make certain players out to be 100% brilliant or those which claim players are 100% useless.

(I bet you now go and find some post or other from 3 years ago when I ranted on about one of our players.)
Spoken like a proper Saint Strass.
We're all true Saints at heart, Mack, but when it comes to being saintly, some struggle a bit.

Enjoy the Chelsea match. Please taunt Jose for me. (What is Portuguese for w@nker? I would ask the wife, but I don't think she'd tell me.)

Get rid of J-Rod and three points for us!". Also "J-Rod... Scored the goal but is, by far, our worst player. This guy is like playing with 10 men! Gives the free kick away leading to their second goal... He has had enough chances!" And I looked up a very nice chap called Velleity "Sell J-Rod; after six games we have enough information to know that he's useless.
