HORNDEAN’S 2-0 win at Whitchurch United was marred by a serious injury to midfielder and skipper Tommy Woodward.

Play was held up for over 30 minutes before the former Fareham Town man was taken to hospital with both the fibula and tibia bones broken in his right leg.

Horndean were leading 1-0 through Nathan Paxton before Woodward suffered his career-threatening injury in an accidental collision with Pa Touray shortly before half-time.

Liam Gilbert rounded off a fine all-round personal display with Horndean’s second goal from the penalty spot and later dedicated victory to his badly injured teammate.

“It looked an horrific injury. We doubled our efforts after that and dedicated our win to Tommy,” Gilbert said.

Wishing Woodward all the best, Whitchurch added: “We would like to wish Tommy Woodward a speedy recovery and hope to see him back playing as soon as possible.”
