Steven Davis: We should aspire to Chelsea's ruthless efficiency

Daily Echo: Steven Davis Steven Davis

Steven Davis believes the ruthless efficiency Jose Mourinho's title-chasing Chelsea side possess is something Saints should aspire to.

Just five weeks ago, Saints' best ever start to a top-flight season saw them within a win of moving top of the table.

However, a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal in late November put paid to those hopes and began a run which has seen them win just one of their past eight - including a 3-1 loss at Stamford Bridge on December 1.

Those statistics do not fairly represent Saints' impressive displays, injury problems and level of opposition, but they do highlight areas to improve on.

"I don't think there is any feeling within the team that we're on a slippery slope or anything like that," midfielder Davis said.

"We have been in games, overall our general play has been good and we just have to cut out certain errors at the back and be a bit more clinical going forward as a team as well.

"I don't think it has dented our confidence in anyway. There is still that belief in terms of how we want to play and everybody is 100 per cent behind the methods.

"I think if the start of the season we had been looking at this position, we would have been relatively happy.

"We have seen a lot of progression from where we came from, our first Premier League season.

"This month, in particular, has been difficult in terms of the fixtures we've had. We've probably been a little unfortunate in certain games, naive in certain games.

"That is something we need to learn from and try to put right.

"As a whole, there are a lot of positives to take forwards and a good progression being made."

Something Davis knows Saints could do with is a mental strength similar to Chelsea.

Despite having failed to reach their best yet, the west London side could go top of the pile tomorrow thanks to an unerring ability to grind out results.

"We managed to beat them towards the end of the season when we beat some of the bigger teams at home," Davis said. "It is something we hope to replicate again.

"We know how strong Chelsea are, even though they don't seem to be firing on all cylinders yet.

"We see where they are in the table and they seem to have that mentality within them and an efficiency in their game. That is something we need to try and get into ours as well.

"It is a really good game to look forward to for us and one we will go into with belief of winning."

AGREE.

150% EFFORT AND CONCENTRATION REQUIRED.

Chelsea have skilful passing players - so we must disrupt their play and make every tackle count.

LOTS OF SHOTS inside the box. Instead of threading the ball through and intricate 1 - 2's that result in nothing.

THIS IS A GAME WE CAN AND WILL WIN.

WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON.

Over the last few weeks the problems have been down to lack of strength in depth. Our 3rd choice goalkeeper is not Premiership quality and there are some players who are still here that caused Nigel Adkins so many problems last season with their awful defending. We were fortunate to have a relatively easy start this year and are now where we probably deserve to be - mid table. I think we wouild have been mid table last season too if Adkins had stayed. I am not sure that the money spent sp far has been spent wisely and am also not sure if we have made that much progress under MP. Yes, he is different to Adkins but whilst the defence has been better we dont score as many goals as we did under Adkins. MP has been fortunate to inherit a number of good young players who were already here. It will be an interesting 2nd half of the season but without the addition of a coupleof quality players I dont see us getting into Europe. THe top coaches have worked us out and we dont have enough variety. I seem to remember Adkins being critised for having no PLan B. Does MP have one? If his high pressing game doesnt work what do we do?

We have to press harder than we have been doing of late. An all team effort to chase them down . Then our chances will emerge and our team, victorious.

....and a happy new year... Well, I guess your user name holds no false pretensions, but seriously- has it been that much of miserable season for you that you can't see any progress with the squad and the way the team are playing? Not saying we are ready for champions league, but cheer up ffs

Will this paper have the decency to print an apology to that little Evertonian boy who was wrongly accused by the press of stealing a Saints players shirt which was clearly seen on TV and witnessed by thousands of supporters as being a GIFT. The UK press are akin to dog muck.

I am not saying it has been a miserable season. I am just being realisitic. We went terrible last season and we arent world beaters this season.Much is made of the "progress" but I saw plenty of that when Cork started last season. We have had two good managers before MP came along and both did a good job for us. If either were here now I think we would be doing well thanks to the youth system. Progress would be not making the stupid mistakes again that littered the beginning of last season, but they are still there. We still make schoolboy errors at the back and although our defensive record is better than at this stage last year we have ridden our luck on many occasions. We didnt have much luck last year from what I recall. I dont need cheering up thanks but at the same time I am not going to pretend that many of our problems have been solved.

There isn't a Saints fan that wasn't aware that Gaston presented the shirt to the little kid, pictures of him after showed him as proud as punch to have it, posible later convert to a better cause? The Daily Mirror yet again with a massive fail that affects us, they are a pathetic paper when it coms to sports coverage.
