Saints home to Championship strugglers Yeovil Town in the FA Cup

Daily Echo: James Hayter James Hayter

SAINTS have been handed another home tie against Championship opposition in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The club's reward for beating high-fliers Burnley 4-3 at St Mary's yesterday is a visit from struggling Yeovil Town.

The Glovers defeated League 1 promotion hopefuls Leyton Orient 4-0 at Huish Park yesterday with ex-Bournemouth striker James Hayter scoring twice.

Saints played Yeovil four times in their two League 1 seasons a few years ago, winning three of them.

They beat Yeovil 2-0 at St Mary's in September 2009 with two Rickie Lambert penalties, before a late Lee Barnard goal gave them a 1-0 win in Somerset the following April.

Yeovil held Saints 1-1 at Huish Park in September 2010, but Saints won 3-0 at St Mary's later in the season with Barnard (2) and Alex Chamberlain on target.

Yeovil have two ex-Saints in their ranks.

Striker Sam Hoskins was not in the squad yesterday, though he did come on as a sub in their 5-1 loss at Huddersfield on New Year's Day, while defender Danny Seaborne is on loan at Coventry.

Fourth round draw: Sunderland or Carlisle v Kidderminster or Peterborough, Bolton v Cardiff, Southampton v Yeovil, Huddersfield v Charlton or Oxford, Port Vale or Plymouth v Brighton, Nottingham Forest v Ipswich or Preston, Southend v Hull, Rochdale v Macclesfield or Sheffield Wednesday, Arsenal v Coventry, Stevenage v Everton, Wigan or MK Dons v Crystal Palace, Derby or Chelsea v Stoke, Blackburn or Manchester City v Bristol City or Watford, Bournemouth or Burton v Liverpool or Oldham, Birmingham, Bristol Rovers or Crawley v Manchester United or Swansea, Sheffield United v Norwich or Fulham. Ties to be played on the weekend of January 25 and 26.

Been a GOOD Day.

Wet Spam and Fat Sam humiliated in the Cup.

A draw in the FA Cup at Home and against a local Team Yeovil.

It takes a lot of pressure off - and IT WAS A BRILLIANT WIN OVER BURNLEY YESTERDAY.

Always good for the Club the Fans and the Team to get WINS under the belt.

Like MP to think about our Defensive set up - to recognise our TOP PLAYERS and tighten up with our tactics by not leaving the backs too exposed or get done on the counter attack.

WE FIGHT TO WIN AND SECURE 3 POINTS AGAINST WEST BROM.

Lots of posters have highlighted that we have been a match for every team other than Chelsea.

There is no logical reason for this AS WE HAVE A VERY GOOD SIDE WITH 3 ENGLAND INTERNATIONALS.

Looking forward to the day when we can WIN and dish it out to their supporters.

HOPEFULLY .... We will get a fulller turnout and a GOOD Atmosphere at the ground with the Fans.

I know some fans wanted an Away Tie because of the passion of the fans and can be a better day out - especially at a club like Yeovil - but we have had a TOP DRAW OUT OF THE HAT.

We can concentrate on the LEAGUE AND MARCH ON IN THE CUP.

THE SAINTS GO MARCHING ON ON ON.

Greetings from Portugal.

Great draw for us but the Cup is the Cup, so we must - and WILL - take Yeovil seriously.

On a different note, the news here is currently dominated by the death of Eusebio. Only a handful of footballers are in that top, top group of players - Cruyff, Pele, Puskas .... Eusebio was one of them. Not only that, but as opposed to, say, great players like Maradona or Best, Eusebio was a model pro and was respected inside and outside the game, on the pitch and off it. A Portuguese legend and a global football ambassador.

Eusebio, rest in peace.

Beat them last season and drew at their place after being 2-0 down at half time. One of the best games I've been to just because it was so satisfying :)

This is a good draw on paper but it can't be taken for granted and won't be, Yeovil have an experienced Manager in Gary Johnson and he would obviously love an upset, he will do his homework to win and help put more money into his Club, will Rickie be playing? not according to the Sun on Sunday because he's desperate to get away and double his wages to West Ham.
If this is to be believed then Rickie can tell wonderful Porky Pies because in an lovely interview with Adam Blackmore recently he said he is a Liverpool fan and now a Saints fan, he loves the Club, Chairman, Manager and his Staff, Fans, the South the area, Schools for his Children and earns nearly 2 million a year so unless Nicola Cortese and Mauricio Potchettino has other ideas who's telling the truth? I'm sure the Saints Fans who have read it on the bottom left corner of the back page put the Paper in the Cat Litter tray I hope. COYR

We should run the rule over Yeovil actually. Given that we haven't had a credible local rival for some years now, perhaps we could give them a chance. Problem is they are more likely to get relegated this year and then they will only be one league above all that history.(otherwise known as the laughing stock of football) Oh I don't know though, they may still be two leagues above them.

Perhaps Forren didn't want to be here? You look at the pictures of the squad training, and it's all smiles and laughter, yet I only ever remember him looking surly.

I know he also used to frequent casinos, with "hangers on". Maybe he spent too much time there, for the club's liking?

My son's partner, who works in a casino, once had to ask him for his name and was met by his lap dogs spouting the "you don't know who he is?"

When he told her "it's Forren", she replied. "Fair enough, but was is your name?" True story.

On the defensive (slight) problems, I would still like to know why Forren went back... I think he will end up at Cardiff now, he is a very good player.

Anyone know the odds on us to win the cup? Might be worth a few Kroner

Brilliant! I have never realised Forren was like that.

Reminds me of a day when Beaulieu river was being fished (the community helps and can take some fish home, still occurs every year) Old Monty gets first pick then a free for all. Well, this one guy had to leave and took a couple of average fish. He saw Monty while walking back to the car who took exception to this man with his fish.... "Don't you know who I am?" Said Old Monty.... "Yes, but do you know who I am?" When Monty shook his head he told him... "I was the guy that sent you down for playing with small boys!" The retired judge just walked away :-D

Never thought of that. So I've devised a cunning plan. We could play Foxy who should give him a good hard kick in the bo--ocks and then tell him he's not welcome at St Marys and he never used to do that until Saint Nicola told him to. He'll get sent off but we should be able to cope.

I will say that Southampton and Pmuff are very similar to Birmingham Villa…one has the passion one has the fan base…..we need more of pompey passion you need our numbers!
Don't agree. All clubs have their passionate and vociferous sections of fans. Ours are obviously centred in the Northam so it follows that other parts of the ground are not as noisy. Given that we get around the 10th biggest average gate it also follows that we have a larger number who don't sing and shout as much. All the skunts have are a number of morons centred around the idiot with the bell and they have no more passionate fans than anybody else. That is the case only in their own tiny minds.

According to Google, they went out in the 1st round to a team called St Evenage? Sounds Swiss but I guess not seeing as it's a domestic competition?

Attendance was 2,829 but that can't be right as their fans have a "passion for the greatest club comp there is".

I think you got sold on the pompey mith Warrens. Part n parcel of getting a nice new stadium was to get a larger fan base...which includes attracting families and supporters outside of the "lets intimidate the opposition" ilk.

You want passion....then get ticket in the Northam or Kingsland/Itchen North. I will continue to take my daughter to the Itchen South where the language is generally a little less fruity.

I have happy memories of the Archers End at the Dell...but you can't run a successful top flight club on 15k per week.

Pompey have proved that in the extreme. COYR

We've had this argument with various Poopey fans over the last few years about attendances and fans.
Saints average over the last 15 years is about 26500.
Poopey's is about 14500.
This covers Saints worst period and Poopeys best + worst, if there was to be a definition.
Fact is.
Pompey are not that well supported and the figures bear it out.
When Saints were available to buy on the cheap, a multi-billionnaire bought them.
When pompey were available an assortment of crooks bought them and went broke several times and eventually their own fans had to buy the club because no one else wanted them.
Why we keep allowing idiots with stupid ideas about history to keep bleating on about it is one of lifes great mysteries.
They won the F.A.Cup against an inferior club and were very lucky not ot go out of existence
We won the cup against a superior club and went to more success.
Once again we are at the pinnacle of the English football scene and they are no where to be seen.
88/92 ? not exactly something to crow about, is it?

Never thought of that. So I've devised a cunning plan. We could play Foxy who should give him a good hard kick in the bo--ocks and then tell him he's not welcome at St Marys and he never used to do that until Saint Nicola told him to. He'll get sent off but we should be able to cope.
We could also get prutton backin on loan, seeing as he likes a good ight with refs.

...Nonetheless by the time I personally took an interesting following to Farton in 84 their nutcase base was huge...vociferous and some, the blue phew do that better than us...

..Now if this shakes one friggin silent grandad or family guy out of their boots good..we need to up the volume in the itchen and the library aka chapel..it is embarrassing....

I love SFC but some of our fans are hopeless and not part of the team, they should recognise that in football the crowd IS the 12th man (clattenberg aside)..so if you want to be entertained with NO input go to the pictures.

Yes however you are crammed in at Portsea..indeed the most densely populated area in England no less.
Interestingly they did an experiment with overcrowded rats and they ate each other, this possibly explains the diminishing crowds at Farton Krap.

You've probably covered more miles and spent more money following the Saints down from Scotland than PiS has done for his beloved skates from the Costa del Boy, BM.

SIng your heart out from the Kingsland Northern Wing.

We had 36000 capacity in 1984 and 36000 against SAINTS then 1980 we had Nearly 32000 when in div4 in the FA cup. During the rest of the years our capacity was reduced to 22000 if it was higher we wold of got higher attendances so your Fact s unproven coincidently we probably we would of got another 36000 when we played you in premier ! pup les do it from 1970 to 1985 then :O) .

pis your clutching at straws again.
I don't think any of our fans said we WOULD be in Europe at the end of the season. what was said by many, including myself, is we stand a chance of being in Europe next season, we still do.
its a bit like your fans saying you will tear up L1 last season and L2 this season and probably non-league next season.
new watchers? we have been at sms for quite a few years now to call the fans who couldn't get into the dell as `new`.
your fans are so passionate aren't they, that's why when recorded for a tv programme the bell end and his mates turned up late for an away game because they were in the pub and then left at half time to go back to the pub. that's passion for the team isn't it? more worried about the next pint than the next goal. that said i have had the misfortune to watch your team `play` and it was enough to turn anyone to drink!
you lose when it comes to average attendances
you lose when it comes to average league positions
you lose on the pitch

you keep going on about your FA cup wins and what a great history that gives you, and that makes you a `better` and `bigger` club than us, well wanderers won the cup 6 times, that makes them a bigger club than you then?
Old Etonians have won the cup twice as have Royal Engineers so that makes them as big as your club?
history proves nothing apart from that if you have to keep bringing it up you have nothing to look forward to.

oh and just for your info, yesterdays attendance might just have been affected by the absolutely awful weather the uk is having, many fans having problems with flooding and wind damage. don't worry though as several Accrington Stanley fans managed to get to watch us because your shower couldn't get your game on despite having the same amount of rain as us.

There seems to be a "probably" and a "would" amongst the facts here. So if we are going to judge the sizes of our clubs we would "probably" have got 40000 for some of our recent sellouts( ManC Chelsea etc). What a pathetic argument. The straws these imbeciles are clutching are getting smaller and smaller. Do these fools really believe they are a bigger and better club or is it just a desperate attempt to cling on to their past. Either way I think the Health service needs to develop an urgent treatment for delusion.

Back to the real world. The cup is about romance, 1976 the biggest example of that, but in reality we only need worry about the teams above us in the league when it comes to the cup, that has been shown by league results. Newcastle, Spurs and Manure are out. We will have to beat one or two of the others to win it but if we can avoid them for as long as possible and they get to knock each other out along the way then it becomes possible. We're not going for title or promotion and we're not trying to avoid relegation so if this can't be a season of focussing on the cup I'm not sure when can.

One goes, the other shows :(

Blue, check this:

15 January 2011:
Little League 1:
Saints vs tiny Notts County (0-0)
Attendance: 20,201 (Biggest L1 gate that day.)
(We had about 25% of that day's total L1 attendance -
65,000 attended the other 9 L1 games.
Average attendance was about 8,500)

22 January 2011:
Reasonably well-supported Championship:
Skates vs mighty Leeds United (2-2)
Attendance: 20,040
(Even with Leeds pushing for promotion, you couldn't fill your ground.)
(You had about 10% of the total Championship attendance that day -
180,000 attended that day's other 10 Championship games.
Average attendance was about 18,000)

No, you skates are not the bestest best fans in the world. You're probably not even the bestest best fans in the PO postcode area - deal with it!

again pis or blueinbred I ask, if history makes you the `bigger` and `better` club, does that mean that the wanderers or Old Etonians, Royal Engineers are bigger and better than you? or do you just count your history?

just seen Ramires latest dive for chelski on itv`s highlights show, he went down easier than the fish through the leagues. strange how jose didn't see it.
if the FA don't think there is a problem with teams cheating, no not you this time fish, then they should look at chelski this season. today and last week they had players booked for diving, they have had players doing their best tom daley impressions all season, even earning a last min pen against west brom which caused the head ref to apologise to the manager. chelski aren't the only club doing it, manure have certain players who wouldn't look out of place on itv`s splash!
come on FA sort it out, football fans have had enough. don't fine the players, they earn so much it wont bother them. ban them, dont ban them for 1 or 2 games either, ban them for 3 games and if they do it again ban them for another 5 games. that might stop them, it might even stop jose claiming that he has absolutely no divers at chelski, despite having 2 booked in 2 games.

you really are as thick as you sound. any fan an talk about their clubs past successes, in fact its welcomed. we as saints fans often mention the FA cup of 76 and the JPT of 2010 with some pride. however you as poopey fans always mention your history and use it to try and claim that you are the `bigger` and `better` team, that's the point. as I said f you claim to be the `bigger` and `better` side because of your history does that mean the clubs I mentioned are bigger and better than you? if not then stop trying to say you are bigger and better than us, because your not!

On the defensive (slight) problems, I would still like to know why Forren went back... I think he will end up at Cardiff now, he is a very good player.

Anyone know the odds on us to win the cup? Might be worth a few Kroner
Interesting take Norgie. Someone must know the inside gen on Forren... I mean if it's an open secret that Pardew scored more away from home than any other manager then why can''t someone tell us what happened to Forren? Or what's happening with Osvaldo.

Impressive....so, given the feel good factor of the buy out...and the small capacity...why can't you even park now Blue?
There seems to be a "probably" and a "would" amongst the facts here. So if we are going to judge the sizes of our clubs we would "probably" have got 40000 for some of our recent sellouts( ManC Chelsea etc). What a pathetic argument. The straws these imbeciles are clutching are getting smaller and smaller. Do these fools really believe they are a bigger and better club or is it just a desperate attempt to cling on to their past. Either way I think the Health service needs to develop an urgent treatment for delusion.
