2:44pm

Dejan Lovren being taken off the pitch on a stretcher.

Daily Echo:

2:42pm

Saints are unable to hold onto the two-goal advantage that they raced into here at the Stadium of Light, but they do head home with a point. However, there will be great concern over the health of both Gaston Ramirez and Dejan Lovren, who were both taken off on stretchers in the latter stages of the match. We will have updates and reaction for you on the website as they come in. Thanks, as always, for joining us on the blog today.

SUNDERLAND 2 SAINTS 2

2:38pm

Craig Gardner celebrating Sunderland's second goal.

Daily Echo:

2:33pm

Dejan Lovren and Gaston Ramirez off, Maya Yoshida and James Ward-Prowse on (87 mins).

2:32pm

Strange scenes here. Saints have two players stretchered off at the same time. Gaston Ramirez looks to have suffered a bad ankle injury, after Wes Brown caught him on the follow through of a tackle, just as the Uruguayan looked to have skipped clear. The ball then goes up the other end and Lovren suffers an injury tackling Craig Gardner.

2:27pm

Rickie Lambert in action at the Stadium of Light.

Daily Echo:

2:20pm

CHANCE (75 mins): Artur Boruc goes some way to redeeming himself, making a fine diving save to deny Craig Gardner, before somehow denying Steven Fletcher at close range.

2:18pm

Adam Lallana off, Gaston Ramirez on (73 mins)

2:17pm

Steven Fletcher off, Jozy Altidore on (72 mins)

2:17pm

SUNDERLAND 2 SAINTS 2 (Adam Johnson 71)

Sunderland capitalise on an Artur Boruc error, as the Saints keeper fails to keep out a fairly routine shot from Adam Johnson, palming the ball onto the post and into the back of the net.

2:12pm

RULED-OUT (65 mins): Fabio Borini sprints clear and latches onto Craig Gardner's through ball, before slotting past Artur Boruc, but he is flagged for offside. Replays showed the decision was correct.

2:09pm

Lee Cattermole and Sebastian Larsson off. Craig Gardner and Jack Colback on. (64 mins)

2:08pm

Adam Lallana on the ball for Saints.

Daily Echo:

2:05pm

CHANCE (61 mins): Adam Lallana sets Rickie Lambert away down the right wing. His low ball into the near post is met by Jay Rodriguez, whose effort flies into the side netting.

2:02pm

CHANCE (57 mins): Saints pounce on a loose pass in midfield, before embarking on another slick move that works the ball to Jay Rodriguez in space just outside the area. He hits a low first-time shot that Vito Mannone dives to his right to save, before gathering the ball at the second attempt.

2:01pm

Jay Rodriguez in action against Sunderland.

Daily Echo:

Daily Echo:

1:54pm

CHANCE (49 mins): Luke Shaw goes on a blistering run from left back, gliding past a couple of Sunderland players on his way forward. He winds up a shot from 25 yards and, although he hits it well, the ball flies straight at Vito Mannone, who makes the save.

1:53pm

Sunderland 1 Saints 2

1:32pm

CHANCE (45+2 mins): Steven Davis is tripped by Lee Cattermole 25 yards out, down the inside-right channel. Rickie Lambert bends the subsequent free-kick round the wall, with Vito Mannone palming it away at his near post.

1:31pm

Dejan Lovren (centre) celebrates with his team-mate Luke Shaw and manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Daily Echo:

1:26pm

Ki Sung-Yueng booked for a trip on Jack Cork (38 mins).

1:22pm

Adam Lallana and Sunderland's Marcos Alonso battle for the ball.

Daily Echo:

1:20pm

SUNDERLAND 1 SAINTS 2 (Fabio Borini 32mins)

Out of nowhere, Sunderland get themselves straight back into the game. It's a nice goal too, with Adam Johnson playing a driven ball to pick out the run of Fabio Borini through the centre. He controls on his chest, before hitting a right-foot shot past Artur Boruc and into the far corner.

1:18pm

SUNDERLAND 0 SAINTS 2 (Dejan Lovren 31 mins)

Steven Davis swings in a fairly routine corner, with Dejan Lovren showing far greater movement than Wes Brown to reach the ball, before hooking a volley into the far corner.

1:18pm

CHANCE (29 mins): A huge escape for Sunderland again. Rickie Lambert dispossesses Wes Brown deep in the home side's territory. He slips in Jay Rodriguez with a simple pass, but the forward's shot does not have anywhere near enough power on it to beat Vito Mannone, who gets down to save.

1:09pm

CHANCE (21 mins): Rickie Lambert is played in by Morgan Schneiderlin. However, from a tight angle, his shot goes just wide of the far post.

1:08pm

Jay Rodriguez is congratulated by his teammates after his early goal.

Daily Echo:

Daily Echo:

1:06pm

CHANCE (18 mins): Morgan Schneiderlin plays Luke Shaw in down the inside-left channel with an excellent pass. Shaw's cross is deflected by Adam Johnson, with the ball spinning towards the near post, hitting the upright and going behind. Sunderland clear the resulting corner, but are under huge pressure from Saints.

1:04pm

CHANCE (17 mins): Saints launch an excellent break, which ends up with Adam Lallana racing down the right and crossing for Jay Rodriguez, whose first-time volley is well blocked.

1:01pm

CHANCE (13 mins): An awful clearance from Sunderland keeper Vito Mannone, who is well out of his goal, lands at the feet of Jack Cork just inside the home team's half. As Mannone races back, Cork controls the ball and lofts an effort goalwards, but it sails over the bar.

12:59pm

Lee Cattermole booked for a clear and very deliberate trip on Jay Rodriguez, as the Saints forward threatened to launch a dangerous attack. (11 mins)

12:52pm

SUNDERLAND 0 SAINTS 1 (Jay Rodriguez 4)

A brilliant start for Saints, who have really dominated the game in the opening stages. After a bit of pinball just outside Sunderland's area, the ball drops to Jay Rodriguez. He's allowed to control the ball 20 yards out, take a second touch, and then rifle a right-footed half-volley into the bottom corner.

12:45pm

Referee Chris Foy gets this afternoon's match underway. Sunderland in red-and-white stripes, Saints in black.

12:41pm

The players have emerged from the tunnel, onto the pitch. Kick-off is just a few minutes away now. We will have updates for you here throughout the match.

12:17pm

Saints captain Adam Lallana has given his thoughts to today's broadcaster BT Sport ahead of the match. Here is what he had to say about the players' mood, following reports in some areas that there could be an "exodus" from the club in the aftermath of Nicola Cortese's departure.

The dressing room atmosphere is as good as ever. We're coming here for the win.

It's been an interesting week for Saints - to say the least. Mauricio Pochettino had to face up to 40 journalists to speak about his future on Thursday afternoon. Here's part one of what he had to say...

Chambers missed the last game through illness but is straight back in the team.

We are expecting the team news in about five minutes and will bring it to you straightaway

11:37am

Hello and welcome to this Daily Echo blog covering Saints trip to Sunderland. It has been a dramatic week at St Mary's, with chairman Nicola Cortese departing the club on Wednesday night. Owner Katharina Liebherr has installed herself as non-executive chairman as the search for a new chief executive takes place. Today, though, focus will return for a short while to the pitch, as Saints look to build on their recent victory against West Brom. Manager Mauricio Pochettino confirmed on Thursday that he is staying at the club and he will hope to end an eventful week celebrating another three points. Stay with us for build-up, team news and match updates.

we have completely controlled the game and should have at least another goal. hope we can do the same in the second. we need this win, not just for the points and the league but for the club as a whole. its been a difficult week, and we need to put it behind us.
just a little thing that annoys me is Cattermole picked up a yellow for deliberately tripping j-rod when he was running away from him. he made absolutely no attempt to play the ball and just kicked the player. why is that not a red card? if a player kicks another whos not on the ball then he`s off, why not in this case?
other than that hope we can go on and stuff our old friend poyet`s words down his throat!

Well, we will need to get the cheque book out now, Gaston's looked really bad, ankle ligaments (thanks Brown you donkey) Dejan's looks like it was self inflicted and didn't look that bad on the box but he was stretchered off with oxygen! The mighty boruc was at fault for their equaliser and pushed it into the net instead of over for a corner and what the hell is going on with Lambert, his form has been in free fall since his last England call up. Finally Jay rod please take a touch, several times today you had plenty of time and space but you just keep snatching at chances when we should have been 4 up at half time with a bit more composure. Anyway kind of happy with a point but what a wasted opportunity today after that first half performance.

by the looks of those injuries we might need to do some business in the window. although he`s been playing well of late, and he will be missed, we wont miss gaston as much as dejan, who is one of the best CB`s in the league. hope those injuries aren't as bad as they look, and AB being able to finish the game means his injury isn't too bad. at least we have an easier game next week, no offence to Yeovil, and can rest AB and some others.
KL you might want to sell but can you open the purse strings first?
gutted with todays result, should have done better. the only positive from today is that we held a team who are fighting for their lives and were throwing everything at us away from home. that is the only positive I can see. agree with others that SRL looked poor today, for whatever reason. do we need to get mayuka back? would that be the answer?
the ref should hang his had in shame today, not saying he affected the result, but if he aw the `tackle on gaston` and chose to do nothing then the FA need to have a word with him. if however he didn't see it then what was he looking at? if that had happened against other teams they would have had 6,7,8 players chasing the ref around the pitch shouting at him.

Gutted about the injuries and hope they are not to serious.
The ref bottled some major decisions as usual.
Lambert does look slow as some other posters have pointed out but if Foy had given the free kick for the tackle on Gaston we might be rejoicing another Lambert special and have 3 points not one.

For a while it looked like my prediction was going to look very conservative and Saints would finally click in all departments and hammer the Black Cats. Now I'm p1ssed off but glad we at least managed to hold on for a point. Gutted about the injuries and hope they are not to serious. The ref bottled some major decisions as usual. Lambert does look slow as some other posters have pointed out but if Foy had given the free kick for the tackle on Gaston we might be rejoicing another Lambert special and have 3 points not one. The under 18's won 0-3 at WBA so not a bad day really. If the skunts lose again it'll be even better COYR FOADP J7junctionseven

Yet another farking awful refereeing decision, even the match commentator was left totally bemused by him not giving it. Lambert would for sure have scored from the resulting free kick.....(wishful thinking maybe)
I suppose that's what happens when you go up against the establishment and complain about one of their own.

And I must say that:

Kelvin's always beaten at that near post. The second one shouldn't have gone in. He's rubbish and too old.

Oh and Danny Fox was utterly to blame for their second. He was far out of position and should have shut down Johnson. He must never wear a Saints shirt again.

It was Artur and Luke, was it? OK, in that case, I take it all back; they were both fine and not to blame in any way.

Good question. I was there 40 years ago. The lifestyle seemed to me like cloud cuckoo land. I suppose I like living in cities with a city centre and not suburbs connected by motorways.

How any one can compare shaw to fox is beyond me, Valerie you have proven that what you know about football can be written on the back of a stamp... In thick marker pen. In fact all you use this site for is to try and make yourself sound important and clever, complete t0ss pot, waste of space, oxygen thief. Where will you be next week?
It's interesting, all this personal abuse that you aim at me.

I have targeted two posts (now three) at you in about the last eight or ten months, all three in response to direct attacks you've made on me. Yet you seem to want to carry on.

You need to get a sense of perspective. I have an opinion that differs from yours. That's life. I don't respond to what you post any more despite the fact that I disagree with plenty of what you say; I moved on. Time for you to.

I'm possibly a bit biased towards Valleity here...maybe because I have met him at home games and away games...he's a really decent knowledgeable fan.

we are not close friends...just fellow supporters...we don't always agree...but respect each others opinions....

ghk...I sometimes respect your opinions on here too...but all to often you just seem to let yourself down bit.

what an idiot! why the need for personal abuse from someone who moans when others do it and says he`s only here to talk about football?
if you realised what vell was saying, and I`m sure he doesn't need me to defend him, it was about the abuse that some players always get, from posters like you, even before they play. the comparison between luke and fox had nothing to do with their individual skill levels, same with the keepers. it was the fact that if fox had let the player have so much room and be out of position then he would have been given dogs abuse, but as its luke no one says anything. its about the slack that people like you give some players but not others. lalla is hardly if ever at fault, yet gaston? well that's different, same with cork, I`m sure he miss placed some passes over the last few games, but nothing. Big Vic again takes abuse every time a pass goes astray.
is it ok that I compared gaston and lalla or cork and Big vic? are you going to say I know nothing about football because I did?
grow up!

I repeat how can you compare fox to shaw.. Completely different league and about £30m difference. And for the record, boruc is better than Davis.

again, as you find it hard to understand, he isn't comparing their relative abilities. he is comparing the levels of abuse from people like you. nowhere does it say that fox is even in the same league as shaw, what he`s said is that if fox had made the errors that shaw made then there would be non-stop abuse on here aimed at him. so why does one player get abuse and not another for the same mistake. again who said KD is better than AB? no one the comparison was that if KD gets beat at the near post everyone moans at him and says he always gets beat at the near post, AB today? people are excusing it saying that he couldn't have been right or even that's poor from AB.
I don't know what you don't get about that or if I can explain any easier. who said that vell had to bring up formations tactics etc? you did! you moaned that people weren't talking about them, then all you do is abuse people and haven't mentioned tactics etc etc. every time you insist on calling velleity, Valerie you do the exact thing you complain about. as I said why don't you stop doing it and grow up!

People probably moan at fox because he is useless. Take a look at what shaw brings to the teams game with his runs and energy. Goals are scored and conceded by movement, space and teams dragging players out of position. Goals are normally created 4-5 passes before hand and space opened up. Shaw can be forgiven as his1st half performance was outstanding and he kept Johnson quiet until the cross for 1st goal.

Apologies to anyone offended, thought this was a football forum?! Not hear to make friends but exchange views and have banter. Like you Valerie has jumped on band wagon in past posts and probably like you, I have never found his posts enlightening.. Being the forum fuzz

what cant or wont you understand? your moaning at fox because, in your words `hes useless` yet shaw can be forgiven because of his first half performance. and there lies your problem, one player can be forgiven but another cant. what was being said that if fox had played exactly the same during the game and made the same mistake he would have been abused whereas shaw wouldn't. you cant see anything wrong with that?
this might well be a football forum, but does that mean we cant have a laugh and joke? I have often found vellietys posts `enlightening` but it doesn't really matter if I haven't. I often exchange views on here and enjoy banter, was it banter when you called velliety a wa...r for no reason earlier? no that's just abuse, the same abuse you complain about, was that to do with football? no. your still missing the point though, and by your logic a mistake by shaw is even worse than the same mistake by fox. if a player is £30mill better than another then surely his mistakes are so much worse? a mistake is a mistake no matter which player makes it and you shouldn't criticise any player more than any other. if MP decides that fox is the right player for a particular game or position then thats good enough for me. the player you and others are happy to slate has been picked by 2 Southampton managers in the prem and several managers for Scotland, do you think having a go at a player helps his confidence and therefore the team?
NC didn't have to be a football person to run the club, why should he be? he did rather well for a non-football person. hoddle was a football person and he didn't like letiss nor did vegetables! for the record NC never once said anything anti letiss and even said that he cant dislike him because he doesn't know him. can you let everyone know what NC ever did that showed that he didn't like letiss?

Apologies to anyone offended, thought this was a football forum?! Not hear to make friends but exchange views and have banter. Like you Valerie has jumped on band wagon in past posts and probably like you, I have never found his posts enlightening.. Being the forum fuzz
wooooossssshhhh its gone right over your head again hasn't it!
what cant or wont you understand? your moaning at fox because, in your words `hes useless` yet shaw can be forgiven because of his first half performance. and there lies your problem, one player can be forgiven but another cant. what was being said that if fox had played exactly the same during the game and made the same mistake he would have been abused whereas shaw wouldn't. you cant see anything wrong with that?
this might well be a football forum, but does that mean we cant have a laugh and joke? I have often found vellietys posts `enlightening` but it doesn't really matter if I haven't. I often exchange views on here and enjoy banter, was it banter when you called velliety a wa...r for no reason earlier? no that's just abuse, the same abuse you complain about, was that to do with football? no. I don't know what you mean by `being the forum fuzz`.
I don't `jump on bandwagons` unlike some who have jumped on the `fox is useless` and `NC was awful for the club` bandwagons.
those who live in glass houses!
Birds of a feather!
Shaw may have made a mistake? But is performance overall was decent. For the record fox ain't a prem league player as long as his ar5e faces south and I'm more than happy cortèse has gone... For the simple reason that if he was a football person how the hell can you not like le'tiss ... Simple
your still missing the point though, and by your logic a mistake by shaw is even worse than the same mistake by fox. if a player is £30mill better than another then surely his mistakes are so much worse? a mistake is a mistake no matter which player makes it and you shouldn't criticise any player more than any other. if MP decides that fox is the right player for a particular game or position then thats good enough for me. the player you and others are happy to slate has been picked by 2 Southampton managers in the prem and several managers for Scotland, do you think having a go at a player helps his confidence and therefore the team?
NC didn't have to be a football person to run the club, why should he be? he did rather well for a non-football person. hoddle was a football person and he didn't like letiss nor did vegetables! for the record NC never once said anything anti letiss and even said that he cant dislike him because he doesn't know him. can you let everyone know what NC ever did that showed that he didn't like letiss?
Missing the? You have no point .
Fox ain't worth million so shaw is worth over £30m. I've watched fox and since the away game to west brom decided he wasn't any good, what a manager says and picks is allowed to be questioned, it's football and opinions differ.
So are you saying you want fox back in the team? Or just continuing an arguement on behalf of Vera?

I repeat how can you compare fox to shaw.. Completely different league and about £30m difference. And for the record, boruc is better than Davis.[/p]
again, as you find it hard to understand, he isn't comparing their relative abilities. he is comparing the levels of abuse from people like you. nowhere does it say that fox is even in the same league as shaw, what he`s said is that if fox had made the errors that shaw made then there would be non-stop abuse on here aimed at him. so why does one player get abuse and not another for the same mistake. again who said KD is better than AB? no one the comparison was that if KD gets beat at the near post everyone moans at him and says he always gets beat at the near post, AB today? people are excusing it saying that he couldn't have been right or even that's poor from AB. I don't know what you don't get about that or if I can explain any easier. who said that vell had to bring up formations tactics etc? you did! you moaned that people weren't talking about them, then all you do is abuse people and haven't mentioned tactics etc etc. every time you insist on calling velleity, Valerie you do the exact thing you complain about. as I said why don't you stop doing it and grow up![/p]
People probably moan at fox because he is useless. Take a look at what shaw brings to the teams game with his runs and energy. Goals are scored and conceded by movement, space and teams dragging players out of position. loosehead says...

would Lambert going & a new young striker coming in help our scoring rate?
just from what I saw Lambert isn't up to it at the moment & looks to be carried by the team!
