Rumour Mill: China's richest man linked with Saints takeover

Katharina Liebherr

China’s richest man has been linked with a takeover move for Saints that would see Nicola Cortese return to the club.

Wang Jianlin, boss of the Dalian Wanda group who recently bought Poole-based luxury yacht manufacturer Sunseeker, a Saints sponsor, is reported in a national newspaper to be prepared to fund a move to buy the club from Katharina Liebherr.

Jianlin would, according to the report, ask Cortese to return to his role running the club on a day to day basis.

The report states that negotiations are under way for a potential £175m purchase.

However, the Daily Echo understands that no takeover talks are currently ongoing.

Katharina Liebherr is going about the business of finding a new chief executive to take charge and is aiming for a swift appointment.

I'm a member of an online forum of Chinese Saints fans (there are 1,932 of them at the time of writing) and the feelings about this among them are mixed. Some of them are concerned. Some don't trust him, but plenty of others are quite excited by the prospect. Plus they think it will be a hell of a lot easier to buy the Southampton kit here. It's impossible at the moment - legit stores only stock the "big clubs" from the major European leagues. Saints are not yet famous enough to even have a fake shirt at the dodgy markets.

That is good to hear! When I lived in Bejing and then Guangzhou in the late 90s there were none! (No mtter how hard I tried)

As for the fans, (Some thinking eis grat while others don't trust him) it sounds like him and Crtese will have at least one thing in common! (Sunseeker aside of course)

There's a few on there who say they've been supporting them since the 90s. They love Le Tiss and know about the Ali Dia saga. Haha. They also seem pretty knowledgeable about all the relegation trials we had back then. Most of them are pretty young though. They either studied or are studying at Southampton University and started following Saints then. There are plenty others too who just love the way Saints play and the focus on youth development. I've become a bit of a celeb on their forum as the only non-Chinese. They love asking questions about the city and the club. I think China is a good potential market for Saints to be honest. There is plenty of disdain for the current "big clubs" like Man Utd.

They'll be very welcoming. My first post a couple of weeks ago has more than 167 replies so far and I joined the QQ group. That's where the real chat takes place, but as I say it can be a bit challenging. Lots of slang and the conversation scrolls by pretty quickly. But they seem like a nice bunch and obviously have great taste in football teams. If you are currently in Southampton they'll be very keen to tap you for local info and rumours. They hoped I could be their channel of information, but obviously I'm in the same place as them. I help with translations sometimes though.

would be a good deal to further the club towards the top. KL has had a very successfull time as saints owner, the family bought saints for around 15m and they could make a great profit if it gets sold for this price. I believe she has greatly carried out her fathers wishes and ambitions and helped saints get to the premier league. She has been successfull and it would make sense to sell it on now having taken the club further in honour of her old man. If mr Jianlin buys the club with nicola as his right hand man saints would be even stronger and nothing would stop us. Transfers would be amazing, new projects such as stadium expansion. Southampton would be so powerful and our development would be complete. LETS HOPE ITS TRUE! COYS!!!

NC Fan4Life says...

Consider the options.
1. Katharina decides to continue ownership & she appoints a good CEO/experts to run the club under her non-exect chairmanship.
At worst this would mean premiership stability as she is from a strong business family & would not let the club/business shrink lower than its current level that it has grown to (reported at £175m?) having doubled their investment. At best she invests more into the club to continue our rise up among the top clubs. Either way we would still be the envy of most other clubs.
2. Katharina decides to sell having honored her fathers five year commitment. If so I think that she would only do so to someone who has the best interest in Saints as a club again so as not to allow someone to destroy what her father invested in to save. Mr Jianlin, because of the Sunseeker connection would appear to be an option if it is true, but we would need to know that we can trust him or anyone else with our future. Reappointing Nichola would give us some confidence in any new owner but of the two options I would currently trust Katharina the most so whatever she does lets trust her to do the right thing for Saints.
Now consider these options to the ones we were faced with 5 years ago !!
The bus has not stopped. Come on you Saints !!
NC Fan4Life

I'm on a QQ chat group too, but that can get pretty intense. The conversation moves faster than I can type in Chinese. The forum is more at my pace.
Thanks for that! It is quite inciteful particularly for this latest story with Topics such as "Wangjianlin has lots of children spread all over Europe", and "Who is smarter Vincent Tan or Wang JianLin"

Gives it a whole diffrentprspctive. I may just join!
Thank for that. They do seem a nice bunch Put my first local post in Chinese on ther. I hope Thornhill Saint translated in Chinese is not rude (I can swear like a docker in Chinese but I don't do slang very well)

Should interesting. About dozen more Chinese Saints fans registered today which can only be a goo thing!

I don't see the two as mutually exclusive. KL needs to get a CEO in and double quick as I don't think there's anyone at the club who can even make a fist of running it even temporarily. The Chinese will need to do a due diligence agree a price and sort out the legals with KL's people, even cracking on that will take a few weeks.

I would aree. Not sure why Adam things the rumours are wide of the mark or who he heard it from (Or how good his sources are)

Someone called FM researcher tried to pin him down on this and it looks like either his source maybe does not know after all.

Seems the upshot of it is Adam has heard (believes) KL will not sell to Cortese.

If I were KL and I got the chance to extract myself from this mess and return to my quiet reclusive life in Switzerland where they don't put my startled photo in the paper and say derogatory things - I'd take it. Particularly if I got to make a profit on the original investment that my dad made. If she stays and doesn't push on she will regret it. Excellent opportunity to bow out with everyone happy.

I don't see the two as mutually exclusive. KL needs to get a CEO in and double quick as I don't think there's anyone at the club who can even make a fist of running it even temporarily. I believe that this has real legs. NC is not a quitter. Saints were his pet project, he hadn't fulfilled his ambition to take them to Europe. He most certainly won't just disappear. He is a control freak that wanted it all his way and Ms Liebherr wasn't prepared to run it that way.
Maybe Mr Wang, or is it Jainlin, is OK with that. The SunSeeker connection makes sense and so does the 175 million price. Fulham went for 150 Million and we have a better club, manager, ground, training facilities and academy. The price is cheap given all those factors. Could be worth double that in a few years. He certainly is a football fan and has more money to play with. Ms Liebherr would make a good profit too.
I, for one, would love this to go through. I see a bigger stadium with new development all around. Pride of the UK, with the best home grown talent assembled in one team and playing Barca in the Champions League.

I'm completely against this. Massively rich foreigners buying some of our clubs and establishing a clique of uber-wealthy teams who monopolise the top of the league is killing football as the spectacle I love. It should be illegal to invest money in football, TV money sohuld be spread evenly around the league, clubs should have to give 1/4 of their gate receipts to the away club, clubs should be tied to a wages ceiling of, say, 60% of their income, and tickets should be pegged at a maximum of twice the price of a cinema ticket.

However, since that's not going to happen, I say that if this Chinaman is going to buy a club anyway, I'd rather it was Saints than Norwich, so I will bow to the inevitable and accept the virtual guaruntee of success that stinking amounts of money coupled with the best academy in the country and one of the best managers, backed by the best fans in a stadium that could be extended, is likely to bring. I guess there are worse fates out there ...

As I added on another story, his company has released a statement via their offical Weibo account in China. My approximate translation is:

"Regarding reports of Wanda's interest in buying the English Premier League club, Southampton, Wanda Group is issuing this important statement: Wanda Group has not been in contact with anyone from Southampton Football Club, nor has it entrusted anyone or a third party to conduct matters related to purchasing a football club. This report is completely without foundation and does not conform to reality."

Sorry, it's only in Chinese so a link is probably a bit of a waste of time.

Does not mean it wont happen!
Not sure what AB's source or he knows but I agree completely. If true and Wanda were to make a decent bid it would sense for KL to take it!!
The Sunseeker link and his involvement in sport makes this an easy story to believe which is why it may just be a logical rumour that grew legs, let's hope just for once it's all true!
And if it were true, with the Sunseeker connection in Poole, perhaps Harry could come back as manager?

We do seem to be in the gradual process of selling off large tracts of the country to the Chinese until one day all our surplus profits are going to be exported back there. Your final paragraph is so true…were we are is probably our real position viz a viz the team, the reliable fan base as opposed to glory hunters, our self financing capabilities and so on…

...indeed the jumpt ot a higher level would involve an entirely different measure of investment way beyond any reasonable return that could be expected..it is a crying shame but true…

This weekend I flew into London and very good friends took me and the wife to see the Arsenal in the diamond club and then to see The Jersey boys (go it is awesome)….

Now we went to see Arsenal play us last season and of course our conecentration was only on Saints….this time I had a good look at the stadium, the quality of customer care and the revenues…

…Consider this the entire second tier around the stadium are all executive clubs yes not hundreds of fans many thousands…the food the service was a million miles beyond anything we do..I had a box for five years at St Mary's and quite frankly compared to the Emirates well there isn't any…

..the attitude of ALL the staff was making your day as enjoyable as possible, no silly drinking laws or limits, no officiousness just an exceptional day out..

The kicker is that Arsenal's corporate tickets alone (excluding boxes!) take more money than our entire home gate receipts…and over 250 boxes not 40 like us…

..so dear fans we are so far behind this that any illusions we have of competing with the top four are just that and it will not be lost on any potential new owners..
