Guly penalty proves team spirit is strong - Perez

Guly Do Prado slots home from the spot against Yeovil

First published in Sport

Jesus Perez says Guly do Prado’s first goal for more than two years proved the spirit in the Saints camp remains strong.

The Brazilian broke his long drought with a first half penalty in the 2-0 FA Cup fourth round win over Yeovil.

It was Do Prado’s first goal since he netted in the 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest on January 14, 2012, when Saints were still in the Championship.

It is believed that Jay Rodriguez was expected to take the penalty but sportingly handed the ball over to his teammate to enable him to take the chance.

It was a real show of solidarity as the dressing room closed ranks following the events which led to Dani Osvaldo receiving a two week suspension.

It was only Guly’s second start of the season, with his first coming in the League Cup against Bristol City in September, and only his second first team outing since the end of October.

Saints assistant manager Jesus Perez said: “We have great spirit, we have a great group. Always we say the same since we came here.

“The secret of this group is that it’s a hard working team, good inside the dressing room and just proof of this situation.

“It was very good for Guly to take the ball and score because that situation showed the players trust him.”

He added: “I am happy for him and the squad because it’s one player more to support the squad in the final part of the season.

“Guly stayed away from the team because of a serious injury and he’s doing well, he’s working hard and deserves to be playing some minutes.

“It was an important moment for us to score the first goal because the team managed to relax and play better.”

Saints were watched from the directors’ box by club owner and non-executive chairman Katharina Liebherr.

Perez insisted she didn’t speak to the players at any stage during the day and that their focus was solely on making it to the fifth round.

“Our aim was to stay in the next round,” he explained.

“It wasn’t an easy game, like all FA Cup games.

“The first half was open, they had some chances to score and at the beginning of the second half as well, but in the second half we played better and better and created a lot of chances – enough to win.”

Injuries - behind him.
Drink driving thing - behind him.
Central figure for numpty abuse - behind him.
The future's bright - the future's Guly.

I'm with you strassie. I think dani story has been done to death. I have been one of Gully's critics but the coaching staff and playing group seem to think highly of him. Hopefully the best is yet to come. I read the Kylie chicken story and was pleasantly surprised to see that the DE had not made a reference to Dani in it at all!!!!! TBH I didn't get past the headline so maybe they did, anyone?

To be fair, Guly is a work horse at the training ground. If MoPo didn't want him he would be off with TLee or loaned out like Sharp.

What's the Kylie chicken story, Chipmonk?

Kylie? Does it involve me? I should be so lucky?

I think Guly is a good player too - and I don't think he is lazy, in fact I think he works quite hard.

With a a run of a few games to build confidence he would be a benefit for us, certainly not a problem.

As far as I can tell (again without actually reading the article) Kylie "did it again" and replaced the "locomotion" with a brand new dance now involving chickens. "it's no secret" that she likes men in France so you just maybe so lucky but you've got to be certain. In other breaking news apparently there was a fracas at the training ground that did not involve either Kylie or chickens. To be confirmed.

Kylie and me? Nice thought! That's got me spinning around. Now I can't get it out of my head!

In other (related) news, is there any truth in the rumour that Jose's black eye wasn't caused by DANI but, in fact, Kylie's sister DANNII? With all these rumours and counter rumours ...................

It's also interesting that, consistently, management just keep picking him.

Nigel, Mauricio and now Jesus all seem to rate him, i.e. the people who probably know better than all of us.

I understand there may be differing views but Guly does seem to bring out the neanderthal in some parts of the crowd. I see flowing and thoughtful play, someone behind me always sees a lazy, useless ****.

I thought he had an excellent first half on Saturday. Rarely gave the ball away. some good runs and tackles and always looked comfortable. Considering he's not had a 1st team start for ages I'd say he looked like he had plenty to offer as a squad player.

You have double digit thumbs down, it's probably my happy clapper buddies, but it might be worth reconsidering your stance. It is obvious that he had more than the usual problems with his recent injuries and has apparently worked **** hard to get back into the running, his effort ought to be rewarded with a better response than this. However I am not saying that you are wrong. I just hope he proves you wrong this time.
