Saints continue to prove they will always be about more than one player according to Mauricio Pochettino.

Saints hit the headlines last month after Dani Osvaldo’s alleged headbutt on teammate Jose Fonte that led to the club record signing being shipped out.

Fonte has reacted with incredible professionalism, leading the team in the centre of defence in Dejan Lovren’s absence and scoring goals against Arsenal and the winner at Hull last night.

Pochettino has often spoken about the togetherness of his group of players being vital for not only the way they play but also getting Premier League results, and this incident has surely only underlined that still further.

“It’s completely forgotten. It’s in the past. We can only look forward right now,” said Pochettino of the Osvaldo indecent.

“I’ve always said that the group mentality is the most important thing, that the team is the most important thing and that there is no player above the team mentality.

“I am always going to defend that point of view – that the team is the most important thing and not a single player.”

He added: “We are always going to defend the common interest and the common good of this group and that is never going to change.

“We are always going to defend that and what’s best for the group and not a single player.”

Saints had to show plenty of desire and determination to win on the road again at the KC Stadium.

As a few early chances came and went in a game in which Saints were always superior, they could have been excused for feeling it just wasn’t going to be their day.

However, they kept on plugging away and eventually got their reward when Fonte bagged what proved to be the winner as goalline technology showed his shot crossed the line before Rickie Lambert slammed it home.

“We always had the hope, we were always hoping we were going to score,” admitted Pochettino.

“I think we showed the capacity to show the patience to look for the goal and in the end we actually produced it.

“We kept on searching for the goal and overall we played how we always play and I think the goal was fully deserved, and the victory as well.”
