Shaw catches Hodgson's eye

Daily Echo: Luke Shaw Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw could be set for an England call-up after Roy Hodgson admitted the teenager was the best-placed among Southampton's talented pool of defenders to make a late bid for a place in his World Cup squad.

Shaw may be 18-years-old, but he is already one of the most sought-after players in the English game.

That has not gone unnoticed by Chelsea and Manchester United, who are said to be ready to pay big money for the youngster this summer.

Hodgson has also been keeping an eye on Shaw's progress, along with his Saints teammates Nathaniel Clyne and Callum Chambers.

Hodgson would not reveal whether he planned to draft any of the trio into his squad for the March friendly against Denmark, but the England boss admitted that of the three, Shaw stands the best chance.

"You will have to wait and see (whether any of the three are picked for Denmark)," Hodgson said.

"I think of the three the obvious one who has been playing last season and has been in the team non-stop since the start of this season is Shaw.

"Clyne hasn't played all the game and Chambers is an Under-18 international.

"It is May when we make decision (about the World Cup)."

After years of playing second fiddle to Ashley Cole, Leighton Baines is now probably Hodgson's first choice thanks to the fact that he plays more regular first team football for Everton.

Cole, for so long England's number three, is now second choice at Stamford Bridge behind Cesar Azpilicueta, who normally operates at right-back.

Hodgson, who made Cole captain for his 100th appearance against the Republic of Ireland last season, remains a big fan of the 33-year-old, but there was also an acknowledgement from the England manager that he has a growing number of options in that position.

"It's a bit of a problem when you are a full back - you either play or you are an understudy," Hodgson said.

"For years people have been understudy to Ashley. Now it's Ashley's turn to sit back, but we know what Ashley can do. We know how fit he keeps himself, how experienced he is. I certainly wouldn't write Ashley Cole out of any plans because he wasn't playing in his club team. But he will have to accept like everyone else that competition for his place in the club team and international team gets stronger all the time, and I will have a decision to make."

I am being selfish when i say, i hope Luke do go to the world cup but flops. . My reason for saying this is it may stop the big clubs trying too buy him in the summer. We would then have another year to progress ourself so we are in a position to offer LUKE exactly the same oppertunitys as them.
Of course i want the boy to go and be voted joint player of the world cup along with AL..SRL..JR. but i also don't wan't him to leave usin the summer

Something to consider and up for discussion .. when will MoPo buy a left back? Move Shaw forward! I can see Shaw being somewhat better, he's already physically stronger and pretty darn quick; than a certain welsh lad that was an extremely decent attacking left back a few years ago who used to wear the red'n'white stripes!

so clyne probably wont feature because chambers is as good, if not better, and he probably wont feature because he`s an under-18 international. yet cole might feature even though he`s kept out of his clubs LB position by a RB. seems to be some double standards there! (pssst roy, lumpard doesn't play all his club games either as he hasn't got the energy levels to play 2 games a week anymore, good job the world cup games aren't that close together in an energy sapping environment, oh wait!). that ok though as you `know` what cole can do, but so does everyone else!
Roy seems to be implying that chambers is too young to feature, anyone know how old theo was, or shrek, or the ox?
Roy try taking a young fresh team to the world cup, a team that will have the energy levels to play in the heat and humidity, players that aren't old and tired after a `long hard season`, and who international managers/players don't know too well so they wont know what they can do.
chambers/clyne or Glen Johnson?

Roy previously said about Clyne 'he's never far from our thoughts' but he seems to have shifted to Shaw now. If I was England manager I'd take Clyne rather than Shaw as RB is weaker for England than LB.

Good to see in the interview, on the OS, that Cork and JWP also got a mention.

For me, Cork is the ready made replacement for Carrick, so why not have a look at him in the holding role, in March.

I agree Corky should be given his chance at some point a quiet authorative figure who can really command in MF - the only question I have about him is is this because he has Spider next to him (who I personally think is our real star player - note, I said personally so don't shoot me). I also think Clyne is as good as any other English RB in the country. Callum could be the face of the future. Lallana should be ready by the summer to step up and play a real part in the proceedings. SRL - love to see him but there is huge competition and Ricky may not get a chance. JRod - Still have something to prove but could be in with a shout depending on how he steps up between now and May.

I agree entirely. That's the problem with these international events - people can "turn heads" and entice players to join the "more glamorous" clubs. The sooner we get into the league of the big boys the better - then our players will be doing the enticing. I believe that we can become another Liverpool in the sense that we will hit the big time after years in the wilderness and then we could become a force in the European game for years to come.

As Justasaintsfan says above (and I speak as an English teacher), this is a forum for Saints fans making their points and those of us who worry about people's English should leave our pedantry out of it.

To back up your point about Saints being the basis of the national team ........

I have to say, "we out tacticed them" does take the idea that you can turn any noun into a verb a wee bit far.

Nouns that have become verbs do, of course, include:
To hoover (to do the vacuum cleaning)
To facebook (to make contact with a 'friend' you've never met)
To google (to look for a piece of information on Google when you work for The Express, so that Wikipedia can misinform you that when there are 28,000 people in St Mary's Stadium, it's 1/5 empty)
To portsmouth (otherwise known as 'to do a portsmouth' - to go regularly into administration and drop more than 80 places down the league in under 5 years)

Roy Hodgson will take 2 left backs to the World Cup, I think it's safe to say one of them will be Leighton Baines. Luke Shaw has a very good chance to be the second, he is playing well and regularly. However, the argument will be if anything happens to Baines (e.g. injury or suspension) will Roy want someone with very little experience to come in. I think what has Roy got to lose, it will be good experience for him in preparation for the next World Cup in Russia.
