Teenage ace Jimmy Yeung proved to be the dominant force in this year’s Hampshire Table Tennis Championships.

The 15-year-old not only won the junior singles and junior doubles, in partnership with Chi Lim, but rose out of an entry of 39 mainly older players to win the men’s singles.

Yeung, from Portsmouth, defeated New Milton’s Phil Handy in the day’s showpiece match, at Testwood Sports College, 11-1, 10-12, 11-8, 11-7.

Ben Cawston (Winchester) and Wojcieck Placek (Southampton) were the beaten semi-finalists.

Yeung’s opponent in the junior final was Martin Matuzevicius, also of Portsmouth, who he overcame in straight games, 11-4, 11-6, 11-3.

After defeat in the men’s section, Handy could take comfort from lifting the open doubles trophy, along with New Milton’s Matthew Daish, as they triumphed over Chris Butt and John McBeath in the closest final of the day, 9-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-6, 11-7.

The ladies’ final was an all-Basingstoke affair, with Fallon Thompson overcoming Sarah Whithorn, 11-8, 11-8, 11-7.

Whithorn didn’t go away empty handed, however, as she beat another Basingstoke player, Terri Allison, in the veteran ladies’ event, 11-6, 11-3, 11-2.

The men’s veteran final was between two Southampton colleagues, as Mike Rhodes got the better of Steve White, 11-3, 12-10, 14-12.

Artur Caltabiano (Southampton) retained his boys’ cadet (under-15) title with an 11-5, 11-8, 11-6 victory over Vincent Cheung (Gosport & Fareham).

The junior girls’ final was an all-Isle of Wight encounter, with Anna Joyce defeating Temeesha Hobbs, 11-6, 11-5, 11-2.

Tournament organiser John Fox said: “It was one of the most successful days we have had.”
