Summary

  • Saints clinch a second successive win, with goals from Schneiderlin, Lambert, Rodriguez and a first in the Premier League for Sam Gallagher ensuring a result that takes the club into eighth position.

4:59pm

An excellent win, bringing to mind the 4-3 win against the same opponents nine years ago. The difference being this win has come at the start of an exciting new era for Saints under Krueger, Liebherr and Pochettino.

4:57pm

Daily Echo:

4-2! The points are safe. Substitute Sam Gallagher's first Premier League goal was confirmed by goal-line technology after Steve Davis scampered down the right on the counter-attack and provided the cross from which the teenager beat the despairing dive of the last defender.

Daily Echo:

4:44pm

3-2! Yikes! A poor back pass from Fonte and then another mislaid pass from Guly Do Prado allowed Elmander and Snodgrass to score two in as many minutes

4:40pm

Wonderful 30-yard strike from Rodriguez cannons off the angle of post and crossbar and Lambert was soon denied by Ruddy. England manager Roy Hodgson is at St Mary's today and will have taken note.

4:31pm

Daily Echo:

3-0! Rodriguez slams in Saints' third from six yards after Guly Do Prado went past two Norwich defenders, having received Lambert's pass, only to be denied from point-blank range by John Ruddy. That would have been some goal but the ricochet  bounced in JRod's favour and Saints' top scorer made no mistake

Daily Echo:

4:28pm

Lambert sidefoots wide with Guly Do Prado also lurking, having come on for Ramirez

4:22pm

Chants of 'You don't know what you're doing' and 'You'll be sacked in the  morning' directed at Chris Hughton following triple Norwich substitution; Elmander, v.Wolfswinkel & Redmond replace Hooper, Pilkington & Johnson

4:18pm

Daily Echo:

2-0. Soon after coming on for Lallana, Lambert slotted in his first goal in six matches after cutting inside Yobo following Ramirez's attempted flick-on.

Daily Echo:

3:49pm

Daily Echo:

1-0. Excellent start from Saints but that was a first half of two halves, with the last 20 minutes providing few incidents.

3:45pm

Pilkington booked for handball as he rises to meet Hooper's cross

3:38pm

Pilkington's volley from Snodgrass's free-kick cannoned off Joseph Yobo and rebounded to safety

3:36pm

Daily Echo:

Davis goes into the book for a foul on Martin Olsson, who received treatment by the corner flag

3:34pm

Gary Hooper drills a right-footer wide, against the net pole. That's as close as Norwich have come to scoring.

3:27pm

Daily Echo:

Ramirez continues to impress, curling a nonchalant left-footer wide from 20 yards out

3:20pm

Davis shoots wide with his left foot under pressure on the edge of the box

3:19pm

Glorious 30-yard pass from Ramirez to Rodriguez so nearly created another opening.

3:09pm

Davis header wide from Ramirez free-kick on the left corner of the penalty area

3:08pm

Daily Echo:

1-0 Quality pass from Ramirez after quick one-two and a move that began with Steven Davis ends with Morgan Schneiderlin slotting past John Ruddy for his second goal of the season

3:04pm

Jose Fonte heads Ward-Prowse's corner over the bar

This is the start of a new era under chairman Ralph Krueger, who has given an introductory message in today's programme. Ahead of his fifth matchday at St Mary's, he says:

"In the short term, our remit is just to continue to stabilise, and our focus is going to be on putting in place excellent processes that allow us to grow.

"The long-term visions cannot be defined; it's much too early. It would be superfical to start talking about positions or clear monetary or other defined goals. It's about the emotional journey we want to be on long term and we want people to feel this is an organisation that's working to its potential both on and off the pitch.

"I believe that strictly on-pitch success is not true success. True success for the Saints will be when we can say that both on and off the pitch we are working very close to our potential. That's what my vision as chairman is, let's all pull together to make that happen on a day-to-day basis."

Hello and welcome to this Daily Echo blog covering this afternoon's Premier League contest between Saints and Norwich. Mauricio Pochettino's side have won just one of their last eight league matches here at St Mary's, but they ended a three-game losing spell with last week's 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace. That is a result they will be looking to build on today, although they are set to be without the services of injured duo Jack Cork and Victor Wanyama. Stay with us for team news, build up and match updates.

Refs are funny beasts. I think Norwich may have had a point that the 50-50s had mostly been going our way. It's not easy to see on these live threads, and Friend may have got all decisions right, but Norwich were clearly unhappy. Suddenly, having surrounded the ref, all the decisions are now going Norwich's way.

We need to get a grip on this game again before we let Norwich back in.

Wonderful goal, but woeful last 30 minutes. Lallana repeatedly giving the ball away as well as others. Their play is static. They are passing to stationary men, not men in motion, and you can't put any pressure on the opponent without movement off the ball. By-the-way, happy-clappers, all that back-passing to the keeper is not "pleasing to the eye" football. It's the kind of b.s. lack of commitment negative football that has real football fans booing their own side when done so often. Better "hoofball" as you call it, then gutless-back-to-the-
keeper-again ball. Where has the midfield been when the back four and Boruc have been under pressure? Why are Ramirez and his twin, Adam, invisible?

Ahhhh, a football comment, well done. Not that I agree with the selectivity of your critism but it's a world away from just moaning at posters.

Personally, if we (and that's about 9 of the 11) can outplay a Prem team whilst being so poor, then all is good.

You failed to mention the crucial part played by Guly. His turn and shot - which was well saved by Ruddy - caused half of the chaos which led to the ball breaking for Rickie.

But what a performance by Rickie since he came on and what a game Jay has had.

I bet Norwich which they had Jay and a sub like Rickie. Hooper and van Wolfswinkel are poor by comparison.

..... two things worth noting.

1. Given our usual ratio of goals per chances, we've been hot in front of goal today.

2. No Victor - the usual focus of attention when our passing is poor - yet (Morgan aside) the midfield area passing has been sh!te.

Here's my view. All game, we were So comfortable and in control that we allowed ourselves to switch off A LOT when in possession. There were so many shocking stray passes (although, that aside, we were pretty good).

Worst offenders?
1. Artur, who must have been cross-eyed when the ball was at his feet.
2. (in the first half) probably JWP, Davis and Luke.
3. In the final 5 minutes (plus 7 of injury time), Dejan, Jose and Guly.

So, to try to answer your post, the first came when Dejan turned and didn't look up before sliding a pass across the defence which Norwich pounced on. The second came when Jose played a stray pass out of defence, and when it fell to Guly, he played a sloppy pass similar to Dejan's. The effort was saved but broke to Snodgrass and the little sh!t scored.

Other negatives include:
1. possible injuries to Adam, Gaston (slight hamstring, apparently) and Dejan (who limped off and could be out again).
2. Everton's late winner - doubt we can catch them but Spuds and Manure (a good combo) are in our sights.

But we won and the positives include
1. Morgan's performance in midfield. I thought he was world class today and took his goal superbly.
2. Jay's performance - probably got MotM ahead of Morgan, because he would have been noticed more.
3. Rickie's second half cameo.
4. Sam scored.
5. Despite the costly stray pass, Guly played well and nearly scored.
6. Gaston looked sharp in the first 25 minutes.
7. Norwich are okayish - I hope they stay up ..... they've come a long way since falling into League 1 with us back in 2009 ...... BUT look how much further than them we've come since then.

That is so positive and refreshing I am having a job to believe one of posters said it!
