Fonte refuses to give up on World Cup dream

Daily Echo: Jose Fonte Jose Fonte

JOSE Fonte is hoping for a shock call-up to Portugal’s World Cup squad.

The Saints defender is enjoying the best season of his career but has had no contact from Portugal’s head coach, Paulo Bento.

Fonte, 30, said: “I have my goals, I have my dreams and obviously I want to be in the World Cup.

“If I didn’t I wouldn’t be ambitious, what would be the point of playing in the Premier League?

“It hasn’t happened yet but I will keep working hard and looking forward to get my name on the list.

“I’m playing in the best league in the world against the best strikers in the world and we’re doing well so I don’t see why I shouldn’t be considered.”

Portugal’s first-choice defensive pairing is the experienced combination of Bruno Alves (Fenerbahce) and Pepe (Real Madrid).

The likes of Ricardo Costa (Valencia), Rolando (on loan to Inter Milan from FC Porto) and Luis Neto (Zenit St Petersburg) are also ahead of Fonte in Bento’s plans, having been called up for the recent friendly against Cameroon, which Portugal won 5-1.

But Fonte, whose only international recognition was a solitary appearance for Portugal’s Under-21 side, is worthy of consideration.

His mistake in the win against Norwich City was an aberration during what has been an outstanding season alongside Croatia’s Dejan Lovren.

Portugal will be in the same group as Germany, USA and Ghana at Brazil 2014.

We had cheese for supper last night and my missus dreamed she was eating shredded wheat and then woke up to find a big chunk of the mattress had gone. But I had a lovely dream in which all the Poopey players turned into bowling pins.

And dreams can come true! In fact last week I dreamed that my house had been burgled and everything in it was stolen and secretly replaced by the thieves with identical items. I can't be 100% sure that this didn't in fact happen.

I have sent an urgent message to MoPo this morning (via Mrs Wilson) that he must ensure the players do NOT read the big news about scientists finding evidence of 'inflation'.

If the players find out that a billion billion billion millionths of a second after the Big Bang this inflation caused a phenomenal expansion of the universe from an infinitessimally small thing into an infinitessimally big thing - and that the unbelievably massive observable universe is in fact only a tiny, tiny, tiny fraction of the whole universe - then they might start thinking three points on Sunday isn't so important in the scheme of things.

We also need Jose to stay focussed on winning a place in to Portugal team and not be @rsing about on the pitch at Tottenham being overwhelmed by the notion of space ripping itself apart by expanding 100 trillion trillion times in an instant.

If we are to move on to the next level - Boruc, Fonte, Hoover and SRL must be replaced by better. They have all done there bit and have helped Saints to be where we are but Marshall Shawcross Richards and Remy could well make up top six COYR

I've been impressed with Jose since we reached the Prem. He had a great year in League 1, got the Player of year award - and deserevd it - and then seemed a bit lost in the Championship. I don't know why that happened but I, and many others had more or less written him off. In came Yoshida and then Forren, and I fully expected Jose to be shipped out - Was it Galatasary that were reported to be interested?

He then got a run of games and looked half decent before his injury in January last year. Dejan arrived and, again, we had all pretty much given up on him being anything more than an occasional sub.

But no! He and Dejan have formed a solid partnership and some of the credit must go to Jose.

So, NOT international standard? Well, he rightly makes the case for doing pretty well in a league in which the standard of strikers is up there with the best that any league or international competition can throw at him, and he could certainly do a job for Portugal. Would I pick him for, say, England, ahead of those likely to represent the 3 Lions in Brazil? Maybe. But Portugal? Well, Alves is a donkey, but the others are pretty good. So, he probably wouldn't make the current Portugal squad unless one or more were to get injured. Should he have already had (or yet have) an opportunity? Yes! Like Morgan, it seems nuts not to take a look, even if he's, say, 7th or 8th in line.

Bravo e obrigado, Jose! He's played a huge part in getting us to where we are - and what we are all enjoying - today. He c0cked up on Saturday and knows it but he will get nothing but support from me and I'd love it if he actually did make Brazil.

I'd agree Artur is good enough for the Prem but his performances since his injury have not been as good as previous to it. He doesn't seem to be pulling off the great saves and his performance this weekend was nothing special. His kicking wa worse than anything I have ever seen from him and he needs to step it up a bit.

Spot on here ! Morgan statement yesterday was a bit odd the French media didn't like that ! But the way he said it wasn't the right way! Yes he's doing well For Saint but the like of Sissoko, Pogba, Matuidi, Nasri and Cabaye have done so much more than him Specially Pogba ! No disrespect to Morgan but he's not going to Brazil !. For him to come and say that he's being ignored that's a bit much if he was like Matuidi or Pogba I would understand but he's not ! Yes he's frustrated but there's no need for that statement he knows that the French team is very important to everybody and we've waited 5 years to rebuild the team. Because of that statement he probably damage his chance to play for France I hope I'm wrong here !

Not much picture proof but it was said elsewhere that Artur had a lot of strapping on his leg, and had Kelvin been fit he would have played instead, not sure what the issue is or why Gazza isn't deemed good enough? Presumably that's why Artur was either trying tthe short pass out or miskicking the longer balls?

Marshall's good but no better than Artur, Remy would give us an option but you can keep Shawcross and Richards, more West Ham style bruisers than sophisticated Saints. There are few suitable Central Defenders out there, look at what Roy has to choose from. Stephens can only improve so why not.

There's still more work to do there so I'm disappointed to hear you feel it's done.

If the afore mentioned L2 clubs all get good results tonight to heap more misery on the skunts then every Saints fans should carry out their duty by rubbing salt deep into their wounds.
They deserve no mercy Mr Seed and you know that, so I expect to see at least one choice comment from you on there tonight if he results are favourable for the other clubs.

Killared, you really should stop confusing opinion with fact.
you have now said for both fonte and spider that there are several players that are better than them, that's your opinion and that's fine but the French and Portuguese managers might have different opinions. one thing for sure is that if they don't watch the players they wont have the full picture, ad that's the biggest let down for the players and Southampton FC.
you moaned abut spiders opinion and what he said however he has the stats to prove that he was the best midfielder in the prem last year and is on his way to repeating that again this year, so why hasn't he been watched? it probably, like most things in French football, has more to do with politics than football. france have produced some real quality players over the years and despite winning a world cup in their own back yard they have done nothing. yes its the same for England however the French national team has a history of imploding, you cat say you weren't embarrassed by what happened in south Africa. why would a player who is not even looked at care about what he says? I predict france will implode again and fail to get out of the group. the French media do a worse job than the English of building up and then knocking their team. how many of your squad were born in france this time around? that's just another problem you have.
many people were saying that Fonte wouldn't be good enough to play in the prem and when we had the bad start to our first season he was vilified by many, Fonte has proven this season that he is good enough for the prem and is better than many other CB`s out there, would you rather have jones or smalling from manure? any of spuds CB`s? Fonte may not be world class but he is a whole hearted player and he has struck up a great partnership with Dejan. lets not forget that the prem is a much harder league to play in than any other, spain has 2 teams same with france, Italian football has been shown to be corrupt before and I`m not sure I still trust it. should Fonte get a call up to the Portugal squad? I don't know but I know hes done more than enough to prove his worth for us and show he can defend well against some of the best forwards in the world.
perhaps roy should look at spider and Fonte, then we really will take over the national squad!

I'm upset because Morgan doesn't need to beg the French coach and make that stupid statement to play for France and stats mean nothing ! Look at Messi probably the best player ever but when he play for Argentina the guy is a shadow it's the same thing with Rooney. The players that I mention yesterday are far superior to Morgan. The EPL is the most watch league in the world and that's it not the best !. If it was the best league in the world English team would win the Champions league every year but that's not the case ! FC Basle beat Chelsea this year, Man united lost Against Shaktar Donesk and Olimpiakos. So please stop saying it's the best league in the world the media make you believe that !

Killared, you really should stop confusing opinion with fact.
you have now said for both fonte and spider that there are several players that are better than them, that's your opinion and that's fine but the French and Portuguese managers might have different opinions. one thing for sure is that if they don't watch the players they wont have the full picture, ad that's the biggest let down for the players and Southampton FC.
you moaned abut spiders opinion and what he said however he has the stats to prove that he was the best midfielder in the prem last year and is on his way to repeating that again this year, so why hasn't he been watched? it probably, like most things in French football, has more to do with politics than football. france have produced some real quality players over the years and despite winning a world cup in their own back yard they have done nothing. yes its the same for England however the French national team has a history of imploding, you cat say you weren't embarrassed by what happened in south Africa. why would a player who is not even looked at care about what he says? perhaps roy should look at spider and Fonte, then we really will take over the national squad!
So please stop saying it's the best league in the world the media make you believe that !
there may be some good teams in other leagues but nearly every league in Europe is a 1or 2 team league, when was the last time Barcelona or Real didn't win the league? the best teams in those leagues will always be able to attract the best players and have more financial clout than the others. this is where the prem is different. there are 4-6 teams (maybe more next season) that have a chance of winning the tittle. that is what makes the prem the best LEAGUE, its much more competitive than any other league.
our teams may have struggled in the champions league this year but we still got 4 teams through the group stages. the closest league to ours is the bundesliga, but its no where near as competitive.
your right stats don't mean everything but why then say messi is great but not for argentina? the players you mention aren't `far superior` to Spider, they may be in your opinion but your opinion isn't the one that matters, neither is mine but that's why we have stats! morgan didn't `beg` to play for france either, he just said that if france aren't interested then maybe he should change to England, it was MP who invited DD to come and watch Spider, if he doesn't come to watch him then it just shows how blinkered he is, if stats tell you that one of your players is one of the best in the best/most competitive league in the world and you don't even go to watch him then your either not a very good manager or you have a problem with that player.
again your opinion is not fact, neither is mine but I never try to claim that I am stating anything but opinion, unless I have facts or stats to back it up.

I've just re-read the Morgan quotes and, if they are accurate quotes, I can't see what he said that you think he shouldn't have said. All he said was that he didn't believe Dechamps has ever seen him play (could anyone disagree with that?) and he made an observation about what he believes is the difference in Engalnd compared to France/Portugal when it comes to having a chance of breaking into the national squad.

I'll make a prediction. Dechamps will be out of the French hotseat long before Morgan has to give up on playing for France. Then, when that happens, maybe the next coach of France won't be as blinkered as Dechamps or you.

Yeah and it's Northampton we would prefer to win out of the three. They need to finish 22nd to free up 23rd for the skunts.
Of the four we want to win two are, one is drawing and one is losing and yes it's Northampton. If the skates finish 3rd from bottom I will be gutted. Come on Northampton you're at home, you've been on a great run now put in a shift for the last 45.
I have a feeling that, come the end of the season, Northampton and Exeter will just about be fine.

Alas, Torquay will probably drop, along with one of the others currently above the drop zone. I know who my money's on.

Every single game, home and away buddy.

He will not make the Portugese squad, he is not good enough and makes too many errors.

Not every player who pulls on a Saints shirt is world class buddy.
We all like to think our squad is a cut above, but in reality some are good enough for bigger things and some are not... Jose is the latter imho.

If he was really good enough to get into the 4th best side in the world, we would have no need to replace him next season.
Gaz I don't think anyone has said that they think Fonte is `world class` but he is certainly good enough for the Portuguese squad. Most of their CB`s play in lesser leagues and seem to change clubs every year, is it for the money or the clubs don't rate them?
Don't put too much faith in Portugal being ranked 4th either, England were ranked 4th after euro 2012. Portugal finished 2nd to Russia in their world cup group after beating and losing to Russia drawing twice with Israel and once with northern Ireland, they then beat Sweden in a play off. the reason they sit 4th in the rankings and got to the world cup is Ronaldo (no not the fat one), take him out of their team and they look fairly average.
Fonte may make mistakes but I don't think he makes any more or less than most players and he has been very good this season, don't forget he was part of the defence that hardly let in any goals at the start of the season and part of the reason we go to third in the league, until injuries hit.
Fonte has done more than enough to be given a chance to show what he can do on the international stage, in my opinion anyway.

Sum of it's parts. Sum of its parts.
See all the ex-spurt critics have come out again to carry out their forensic and microscopic analysis of all things Saints. The same ones that reckon Roy's an inept England manager whilst being an advocate for change and a visionary in picking through our Marchwood treasure chest. Well I want to redress the balance slightly.
POINT NO.7. Sir Rickie's not been scoring goals, that's all. All QUALITY strikers have droughts some time, and he has got additional qualities and traits that do not get due credit from people that are supposed to be watching week in week out. Even coming off the bench, his touch has been sublime for the third time running, with the bonus of finding his scoring boots again.
Saints are a work in progress, they all appreciate their team mates, so please Mr Guly, stop criticising!
