Andre Marriner will referee Saturday’s match between Saints and Newcastle, just a week after making a high-profile blunder by sending off the wrong player.
The official incorrectly dismissed Kieran Gibbs, instead of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, during Chelsea’s 6-0 win over Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
Oxlade-Chamberlain had handled in the area, as he dived to keep out an Eden Hazard shot, but Marriner identified the wrong player and instead showed a red card to Gibbs.
Despite the mistake, Marriner has not been dropped for this weekend’s round of Premier League fixtures, and will take charge of the clash between Saints and Newcastle, at St Mary’s.
