Lack of cutting edge is costly for Southampton as Cardiff grab win

Daily Echo: Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

Saints deserved to beat Cardiff, but suffered from a lack of cutting edge, according to Mauricio Pochettino.

The Welsh club launched a smash-and-grab raid at St Mary’s on Saturday, with Juan Cala’s second-half thunderbolt earning them a surprise three points.

Saints dominated the vast majority of the match against the relegation battlers, bossing in terms of both possession and chances.

Pochettino, therefore, felt that the result was an extremely harsh one, but he conceded that his side were made to pay for not being ruthless enough in front of goal.

“We created many chances, but we lacked a clinical edge that we actually needed to win the game,” said the Saints boss.

“It was the easiest game we’ve had in terms of possession.

“We had loads of possession, long spells of possession, but, in the end, it’s a steep learning curve when you realise that all that possession is useless when you don’t score a goal and that’s what we learned.”

Pochettino, who was also left to rue a fine performance from Cardiff keeper David Marshall, added: “If you analyse the game, you saw that Cardiff were defending with nine men behind the ball, and it’s really difficult to actually break that wall, that defence, when their defence is so close to their own goal.

“There were many spells where we were controlling the game.

“We had long spells of possession, their keeper made three or four brilliant saves that actually had a big factor in the game.

“I think, overall, it’s a game that we deserved a lot more (from).

“If you analyse, we should have won, but in the end it wasn’t to be for us.”

Pochettino had no complaints, however, about the defensive, counter-attacking tactics of his Cardiff counterpart, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“I fully respect how the opposition sets up and I’m not going to judge how they set up,” he said.

“I will say that we had total control during the entire game, we created many chances.

“Their keeper made three or four outstanding saves, and it’s the type of game where you control, control, control the game and the time goes by.

“But you don’t get that breakthrough goal and then you end up losing on one of their plays.

“That seems innocuous at first, but in the end it does define the game.”

How many times have we heard this?
" we were the better team, we controlled the game, we were unlucky not to win"
Poor referee decisions and luck have cost us around 10-15points this year, our play has been a joy to watch and an 8th or 9th finish is very impressive... I just feel it could have gone a little better.
If we keep this squad and manager and get as much luck as Liverpool with hand balls, dives etc we should push onwards next season.

Can you imagine if we had a real goal poacher in our squad how many chances that we created would have been put away? Me thinks a few! I think this should be 1 of our main transfer targets this summer. The money from the sale of osvaldo should find a decent prospect. Maybe 'the pea' from united could be a possibility? Sounds like he could be released this summer, so only a signing on fee etc. any thoughts?

Teams that finish their chances better than we do, finish higher than we do.
To a large extent you make your own luck at this level, that's why the same four or five teams are always at the top. Certanly they spend a kings ransom on players but for every bit of bad luck they get they make up for it with goals scored. The league tables do not lie.

We have done really well this year overall but the depth of our squad was the reason for our faltering form in November and December and we never really recovered fully from that period.

My only fear for this group of players is that there is a hard core cameraderie that I havent seen in any team for years. I fear that that may one day be broken. If that small group who played in both Championship and Premiership is broken up then it will need a strong manager to rekindle that deep team spirit that we have now. I think MoPo is the right man for the job but I can see a lot of pressures building up as the richest teams look at our resources and come sniffing around with open cheque books.

There will be a lot of gossip and speculation this summer, it will be a testing time for the new board and for everyone at the club. Now is the time that we truly find out if we are set to be one of the truly big clubs, or whether we fade.

I'll support them forever whatever happens.

This is frustratingly becoming like a broken record-and it's not just MoPo, as I'm always having this discussion with mates who I play footy with that support other teams. The fact is, there have been SO many points lost in unfathomable circumstances this year. Without even thinking hard about it I am reminded of Villa, Sunderland twice, Cardiff, Spurs, Wet Spam twice, Stoke twice, Norwich.... So, even if we didn't get all the 25 odd points we've thrown away, we ought to have at least anothe 15+ points this year..
Very frustrating that we don't convert our chances, but I'd say the lack of creating clear cut opportunites is more to blame than the final touch...

Tough question. But the fact is that none of our front three, as great to watch as they are, are natural poachers. Perhaps we'd rotate, depending on opposition, and home/away games ?
Maybe even dropping one of the midfield three such as Davis and playing more of a 4-2-2-2 type with Rickie in as the false nine and the poacher in front of SRL and the two attackers in Jay and Adam?

I mentioned the poacher in response to another post above. As for the wingers, agree -where would they fit?
To be fair, one thing for Shaw and Clyne/Chambers to be working on to take their games to the next level is their crossing/ final ball.
We don't, in my humble opinion, need wingers-but we do need to make MUCH better use of the ball when we are out wide than we have been.
Shaw alone had dozens of chances on Sat, and he failed to clear the first man, or make a killer cross on each occasion. Better delivery to our forward runners and we could have scored 3 or4 all from that left wing alone..

I think a poacher might help, but possibly the bigger problem is thelack of clear cut chances we create, in relation to how much of the ball we have, and how long we spend with it in the final third? Especially when teams get 9-10 behind the ball, our passing is too slow, and we don't cut them open, more play around outside the box. If we can up that tempo next season, and be a bit more adventurous with that through ball, then a poacher would have meaning

I disagree with this headline 100%. The lack of cutting edge has saved us from ending up in the very second rate and awfully draining on resources Europa League competition. Look at Swansea and Newcastle and how this competition has left them on the rocks- he same will probably happen to Spurs next year.

And just seeing how many injuries we have now, and if SRL and Adam both end up in Brasil when will they get a rest, recovery break?

It's a pity we didn't do the business in the FAC because hindsight being a wonderful thing shows us we could have probably won it.

However this has been a very good season- on wards ad upwards and the lack of cutting edge is a blessing in disguise...I think.

What we also need is a GOALKEEPER.
We have needed one for eighteen months now. (three transfer windows).
MoPo says David Marshall was the difference.
The stats say that we have only won one of 12 games with Gazza between the sticks.
Cody Cropper has been picked for the USA, so can we at least see him play before his contract ends??????

For next season I would drop SRL, leave him on the bench and use him as a an impact player and too accommodate one winger, with one more winger on the bench, I would drop Ramirez if he is still with us.

SRL has been great for us but he is not getting any younger and I think we need to start with a quick striker. I would rather see a Brit come to the club who has a scoring record in the Championship than a foreigner with no experience of UK football.

Who would you drop to fit him in?
Do you mean who wouldn't you drop for Javier Hernandez?

We have no chance getting him, but if we did he would be our best striker by a mile.
I didn't know he was 'the pea'.

I'm in favour of rotation but we also needed to remember that our current forwards have quite a high assist rate, so taking one of them off for a poacher might reduce the number of goals coming from the others. If you get what I mean.

All I am saying from my previous post is that we need options. If you look at our bench for cardiff, we did not have anyone who has the pace of j-rod, or the finishing qualities. So for someone to just say, who do we drop, then they need to start looking outside the box. We are a very one dimensional side, pass, move and keep possession. We need to be able to mix things up a bit. The teams who defend deep, we need numbers up top, so a 442 would be better, but for others the 4231 is perfect. At present we can't mix things up cos we don't have the players, so a bit of thought to who we can sign is definitely needed.

If we can keep playing that football 'up the park' we can educate those highly talented midfielders and defenders to weigh in with a few more goals and assists. Corky forced a penalty with some offensive play last week, and we do need to make more of our own luck in that area. More recently, it seems logical that SRL and Gallagher were going to need a bit more help in that area, rather than less. Defensively, that Marshall would be a good call -before someone else snaps him up-in an area where we have a few candidates who are not quite ready yet.

Easy answer to that is whoever is not on form. People don't get into the team because of their name they get in because they are on better form than those who play in similar positions. The pea would be an interesting addition especially as the cost would not be huge. I still fancy Danny Ings. Interesting to see who is out of contract this summer. Is Rowe ready to step up yet? Which striker from those clubs doomed to go down would be worth approaching?

Mayuka isn't in Switzerland, he's in France, and not scoring many I have heard.

Ramirez is hardly a regular, so you seem to be avoiding the issue. You also mentioned two, not one, winger. So, in addition to SRL, who would you drop? Rodriguez, Lallana, Davis our someone else?
Not avoiding the issue. I am assuming Rodriquez will not start the season, his injury will take six months to get him back to sub level. I think he is unlikely to be able to start games until October/November. So one winger instead of him and one striker instead of SRL and another winger and another striker on the bench.

That's also assumes AL doesn't leave if he has a good WC. I hope he doesn't leave but he will be vulnerable if he turns it on in Brazil.

And just seeing how many injuries we have now, and if SRL and Adam both end up in Brasil when will they get a rest, recovery break?

It's a pity we didn't do the business in the FAC because hindsight being a wonderful thing shows us we could have probably won it.

You are right. Morgan has grabbed a couple of goals with late runs but doesn't do it often enough. We aren't creating enough chances against the rubbish sides like Cardiff who come to park the bus and hope to get lucky. As somebody said earlier Luke and Callum need urgent work on their crossing which was schoolboy standard on Saturday. Luke hardly cleared the first man and Callum played virtually every ball backward instead of getting at them. Just one decent cross early on against a side who couldn't even get into our half may well have opened the floodgates.

That is what we all want to hear, goes without saying.
Well why don't we get to hear it then?
