Wrong time to discuss Lallana says Poch

Adam Lallana

Adam Lallana

First published in Sport

Mauricio Pochettino didn’t want to discuss the future of star man Adam Lallana following his side’s 2-0 victory over Everton.

Lallana, who impressed again in front of England boss Roy Hodgson and looks increasingly likely to make the World Cup squad, has been heavily linked with a big money move to Manchester United.

When asked about his future following the Everton game Lallana said: “I just want to concentrate on the last two games of the season and then we'll sit down in the summer and see what happens.

"I just want to enjoy my football, that's when I'm at my happiest - when I'm playing well. Playing in a great youthful team like this, I feel like one of the experienced players nowadays."

Pochettino was asked about Lallana but didn’t feel the time was right to talk about it.

“I don’t really think it’s the right moment right now to be talking about the future,” said Pochettino.

“I think we have just won a game 2-0 and we should be talking about that.

“When we lose we spend an hour talking about how we’ve lost and now we’ve won and we want to enjoy this moment.

“I want to congratulate the players for what they’ve done and just overall feel joy and feel happy and feel satisfied at the victory.”

Saints’ victory over Everton took them to 52 points, which levels the tally they achieved when bagging a Premier League era best placed finish of eighth.

“I thought overall we need to congratulate the players and all the staff because we have equalled the maximum number of points this club has achieved in the Premier League and that takes an amazing achievement,” reflected Pochettino.

“I’m just really happy for the players and everyone involved with this club.

“It’s also true that we still have two games and why not try to get two more victories out of these two games? That’s what we want to do.

“In the overall analysis of the season we are having a fantastic season and we are very pleased with how the season has gone.”

Good point. Unfortunately the status quo doesn't sell newspapers (nor log a hit on their websites for advertisers), it doesn't help the players squeeze a better deal and doesn't help agents force a big fat fee from a transfer. Expect this nonsense to continue unabated until the new season kicks off and probably beyond - no matter what Les Reed or any player says.

There seems to be a common theme coming from players and coaching staff. Wait and see ambition of the club in the summer and then commit. I'm not sure whether it is wishful thinking on my part but if directors make right decisions AL will stay to lead the club to a bright future Shaw I think will probably go. I hope not to United tho he is better than them.

All of Southampton supporters are fed up with this frenzy that started and continues by greedy Agents and Bookies, Southampton are not a small Club anymore that is in the past and gone forever, they are a forward thinking and want to win the Premiership next season and that will allow them to play in the Champions League.

It's time greedy Agents and Bookies stopped menacing and picked Players that play for any of the other Clubs below Southampton in the Premier League that the top Clubs might want because Southampton will not part with world class Players and very good Players and the Manager, Les Reed made it very clear to stop all this speculation because he and the Board knew it was beyond contempt and they too were fed up with this nonsense.

It doesn't appear that this speculation will stop so let's hope that by June all those who care about Southampton Football Club will be told the news we have all waited for that is all the Players and the Manager will be with the Club for the 2014/2015 season

I'm still not convinced Lallana, Shaw and the few others linked with moves are 100% staying with us, despite Reed's statement. But, honestly, I don't see much reason for them to go. A lot of observers seem to think we are the same Southampton they remember from our previous stint in the Premier League. That is, the team constantly battling relegation, limping along on a small budget in a tin shed stadium, forced to sell our better players to stay in business and generally going nowhere. They haven't updated their impressions of the club. For the past 4-5 seasons though Southampton have known nothing but progress. From winning the JPT, through two promotions, Premier League survival and now a likely 8th-place finish. That's what the current squad members know of Saints, and that's what will influence their attitudes towards us. So long as the progress continues and the ambition remains, I think most of the squad will as well. I'm holding on to the bit of hope I have left that there is still some loyalty in football.

It will die down briefly after the transfer window closes in August and start again as the January transfer window gets closer; and so on.

Well you can see what is happening here - the press (led by the Daily Mail in this instance) has made up its mind that UEFA's FFP rules are going to force us to sell our best players like we always used to.

If we DO sell then all well and good - it's BAU and the press can carry on with their impression of us.
If we DON'T sell then somehow we will be flouting the FFP rules so we will never hear the end of it.

Either way the press will never be happy until Shaw, Lallana, et al are wearing different colours.

The only way to shut them all up is an emphatic answer on the pitch with the squad picking up a medal or two.
That may be what we the supporters want but it isnt what the Press wants.

its other clubs that are feeding the media these stories in order to unsettle our players, if anyone doesn't believe that then listen to the end of the statement by les reed from the radio, asked what he thought about other clubs informing the media about our players he replied "im no aware of any club doing that" to which a reporter responded "they are"!
saints should report the other clubs to the fa and tell them, not ask, to deal with it. if the FA have to change rules then so be it in fact there should be a complete rule change that forbids the media from putting out stories that contain information about wages and length of contract players are to be offered by other clubs. clubs know they cant `tap up` players directly so they do it through the media. the FA clamped down on taping up so they should clamp down on this `back door` taping up!

the speculation about our players wont stop, even some of our own fans don't believe the statement from les reed. they would rather believe that players are all powerful and they have e final say on any move. They don't, players signed contracts and should be held them, otherwise we should just forget about player contracts and just have freelance players who are able to go wherever they like whenever they like.

players sign contracts because they want security from them. guaranteed wages for the length of the contract with added bonuses and knowing they cant be sacked. if a player is happy to sign a contract they shouldn't get upset when the club hold them to it! its for a club to decide when to sell a player not the other way around.

The deluded media, including the DE, have only reported part of Adam Lallana's post match comments after the Everton game

"I am concentrating on the last 2 games and then I will sit down in the summer and see what happens"

But they have all omitted what he went on to say, "we have top players, a top manager and a top team. If we can add to that, in the transfer market and keep progressing, I am sure we can compete for European football"

As lazy journalism goes, the Adam to Man Utd story seems particularly yawn worthy.

Let's forget for a moment whether he'd like to go or whether we'd be interested in selling him - why would Man Utd be prioritising a player in Adam's position in the first place?

Shaw, yeah, I can understand, but they have Rooney, RVP and Mata playing in that creative role already - too many of that type of player. What they need, clearly, is top quality defenders and, if anything a top quality striker who wants to play like a striker rather than dropping deep and taking corners and dead balls, plus better wingers and more pace.

The very last position Man Utd need to fill is creative players off the front man.

They don't even have a manager so the idea they are preparing a £55 million bid is a joke, particularly as they valued Baines and Fellaini together at something like £15 million. Joke.

The only way to settle the players is for the new board to sign up their new targets as soon as the transfer window opens and show their intent that we will progress further next season. You do not break up this excellent young side when 3 top signings would turn us into Champions league contenders next season.
Katharina has not appointed the new board to settle for mid-table or drop back but the time for them to take action is now.
Sort out the managers new contract now, why wait, and tell all & sundry that none of our star players are for sell. Then go and get the new targets as soon as the transfer window opens to make a statement of intent.
That would do it.

It seems to me that Garrards might purased him to join Liverpool while both will be in the England squad in Brazil. I hope not.

Is he to join Man Utd or Liverpool. That is a question mark?

Still I hope such stories are gimmicks.
