AFC PORTCHESTER have ended a promising season with some silverware on the shelf.

The Wicor Rec club lifted the Russell Cotes Cup last night after seeing off Sydenhams Premier neighbours Fareham Town 2-0 on home soil – a feisty encounter ending with three players being shown red.

Former AFC Totton and Folland Sports midfielder Joe Bye got the ball rolling for Graham Rix’s men, firing past Town ’keeper Luke Douglas from Simon Woods’ assist.

Both sides had chances, including a failed penalty appeal by Fareham for a foul on Ash Tattersall, before Louie Castles doubled Portchester’s advantage in the 65th minute. Woods was again the provider, outpacing his marker and setting Castles up for a cool finish.

The game had a major sting in the tail, however, with three red cards issued in quick succession in the 70th minute.

Goalscorer Bye was the first to get his marching orders for a hefty tackle on Robbie Pittman.

A brawl broke out, resulting in Pittman and Portchester’s Joe Noakes also getting their marching orders.

Portchester skipper Jamie Musselwhite - a former Fareham, Follands and Winchester player - collected the trophy.
