Pochettino's odds on becoming the next Tottenham boss slashed after bookies take four-figure bets

First published in Sport

BOOKIES have taken four-figure bets on Mauricio Pochettino quitting Saints to become the next Tottenham boss.

Boylesports reported big support for Pochettino this morning to replace the sacked Tim Sherwood at White Haet Lane.

Initially installed at 7/1, the Argentinian had been supported into 11/8.

This morning, Ireland’s largest independent bookmaker saw further support for Pochettino and has had to cut him into 8/11 following demand.

Pochettino’s nearest rival in the betting is Ajax coach Frank De Boer at 5/2 with Rafa Benitez priced at 6/1.

David Moyes can be backed at 10/1 with both Michael Laudrup and Roberto Mancini priced at 20/1.

Liam Glynn, PR Executive at Boylesports said “All the cash has come in for Pochettino this mornihng. Having laid some four figure bets at 11/10 and evens, our traders have had to cut him into odds on at 8/11.”

Glynn added “Other candidates to see some support are Gus Poyet, who is now priced at 28/1 having been installed at 50/1, whilst Rafael Benitez is now 6/1 having been introduced at 40/1.

“Judging by the interest this morning, it is looking likely that Mauricio Pochettino may be heading to White Hart Lane.”

These punters placing big money have been swayed by the tabloid media storm and not by any reliable sources as far as I'm aware sfc have not said anything, Tottenham have not said anything and mp has not said anything! Your chucking your money away on misinformation and speculation. Lets not forget the crazy media storm when NC left and how we were in disarray and for sale and mopo was a dead cert with the bookies to leave!? Come on people don't believe the hype, the tabloids want to sell papers and sensationalistic journalism is a 'dead cert' to do that!

I wouldn't pay any attention to what the bookies are saying. The odds are calculated (in part) based on the amount of money that has been placed on that candidate - it is not representative of anything factual. If we all went and stuck a few four figure bets on Gus Poyet, he would suddenly become the favourite!

a jump from 40/1 to 6/1 must have meant a few quid has been placed on benitez as well then.
I don't believe a word the bookies say, if I did I would have lost a fortune on poopey tearing up L2 last season and L1 the year before!
how much money do the bookies take on a bet like this normally? has anyone here ever put money on a club picking a new manager? ive never known anyone do it before.

Let's face it, MOPO, LS and AL are leaving before the 2014/15 season starts. How about this. Get in Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole and Rafa for 2 years to steady the ship PLUS a great PL goal poacher. Save on transfer fees and spend it on salaries. What's not to like?

This is not fully true, the guardian main sport story is Pochettino is open to Spurs offer and links the inevitable departure of star players Lallana and Shaw to his departure.Although papers can distort facts and create rumours, there is no smoke without fire!.We must brace ourselves for news that we might not like.

Well peregrine my friend if you have read it in the guardian it must be true!

To be fair, the press knows no more than you or I. The only ones who really know are the people behind closed doors at SFC.

I would hazard a guess that the player that has definitely had an offer made for his services, and the player who has allegedly had an offer made, are chewing it over not just with their families but also with the rest of the squad. The camaraderie, we are told, not least by the players themselves, is adhesive - they are all like brothers. Some of them have been at SFC since they were children.
Now they are on huge money even here. £35k a week - strewth that's more than I earn in a year and I have been 34 years at my job.
They don't want money! They want immortality, and it is a huge huge decision to walk away from everything they have known since they were kids on the chance of achieving it at an unknown club, big though those clubs are.
It's not a decision that is made after a day or even a few days. There is so much for them to consider. The direction of the club, the intention of the management staff to stay or go, the investment in the squad.

And the little matter of the World Cup to prepare for.

So to all Saints fans just chill a little and let the club chew over all these decisions in the biggest close season of its existence.
It may take a few days, maybe a few weeks, but the final decision will be the right one for the club and the people concerned, and the fans.

I hope it will be the status quo preserved, fresh players added, and a statement of intent over the next two- three- five- or ten-year plan, whatever it will be.
Get in Saints.

Poch walked into a wonderful set up at Saints when Atkins was so cruelly axed.. He knew we had a very talented squad and what's more, the expectation levels were quite low. Ho could he go wrong? The real worry is the board. Us fans have known for some time about Spurs' interest on MP. Have the board got a replacement in mind should he go? Is there a transfer kitty for him? How many players will leave? Questions, questions. I still haven't renewed my season ticket. Yes, I was there in the dark days of relegation to league one. You get this horrible feeling this board may just repeat past mistakes....
