Liverpool and Southampton agree fee for Rickie Lambert

Daily Echo: Rickie Lambert Rickie Lambert

Southampton striker Rickie Lambert is expected to undergo a medical at Liverpool on Saturday after the two clubs agreed a fee for the England international.

As reported by the Daily Echo, the Reds will pay upwards of an initial £4million for the player with the possibility of further add-ons, although reports of the deal costing £9m are wide of the mark.

If everything goes to plan Lambert will travel to Merseyside after England's friendly with Peru at Wembley on Friday night and could be confirmed a Liverpool player as early as Monday.

Saints are also expected to resume talks with Manchester United today over the potential transfer of Luke Shaw.

Merseyside-born Lambert will provide some much-needed back-up to frontline strikers Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge and, having fought his way through the divisions to earn a World Cup call, he will relish the chance to return to the club which he left as a teenager after failing to make the grade from their academy.

Manager Brendan Rodgers' interest in Lambert came out of left-field while he was pursuing deals for the striker's Saints team-mates Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren.

Lallana was seen as the primary target to bolster the Reds' midfield, with Lovren less so for the centre of defence, but Lambert looks like being the first through the door at Anfield in what is expected to be a busy summer as they look to strengthen ahead of a return to the Champions League.

Delighted for Rickie. What a wonderful asset he has been to the club bar none. I will always remember his first appearance for England and his first goal - it quite literally brought tears to my eyes. All the very best, Rickie and enjoy the rest of your career.

But as for statements from senior people at Southampton. They obviously can't comment about what is going on as it is happening BUT I do feel an absolute sense of betrayal and almost anger at the breaking news.

It's how I feel.

If you can't tell the truth, then just don't say anything rather than massage the English language to let us down so totally.

A grat day for Rickie and a sad, sad day for the Saints

OK so what are these add ons?

So the exodus begins:
Lambert to Liverpool (dream move but still hurts)
Lallana to liverpool
Lovren to Liverpool
Jay to spurs when fit
Wanyama to any champions league team
Shaw to Utd
Any ideas where Boruc, Clyne, chambers, cork, fonte, ward-prowse, Ramirez might go?

All this and we can't even sell Osvaldo!!!

Watch the managers who contacted us disappear as we sell the Crown Jewels before they turn up

Remember the journey from the bottom of League One with Gossie and the Echo Crowd who used to go to the Station. It has been good but a fight all the way to get to Eighth in the Premier League.

We lose NC - MP and his Team - SRL and there may be more to go with the Board determined to cash in.

US FANS are not driven or interested in the business side of house - it is not our prime driving force. To tell me SRL sale is good business means f*** All to me.

The FIGHT is in stages for EUROPEAN FOOTBALL - and the Premier League Crown with a Wembley Appearance and the Cup.

The way the Board are behaving we might as well get TONY PULIS in and some off cut signings and go for mid table.

THE BOARD REALLY NEED TO GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER pretty quickly and secure a TOP EUROPEAN MANAGER and a TOP STRIKER otherwise this club is facing a fight at the wrong end of the table - in addition to sorting and replacing like for like with the Dani situation.

At the moment RK is giving the message (like we do in the Cup in recent Seasons) of being a sell out club.

THIS WILL INCUR MASSIVE ANGER IN THE FANBASE.

I am with a dozen Saints Fans in the Pub in Town.

But, so the new manager must have been appointed then... come on let's see him... I'm sure I read 2 days ago where Kruger said the new Manager will be involved in ALL transfers??? aahh.. and he also said Europe's the aim?? Well I hope the eventual new signings hit the ground rounding because they'll have pressure on them.. or did Kruger mean Europe in 10 years.. all quite vague really..

If we are going to be a selling club, and it certainly looks that way, then we have got to go for serious money for our star players. These are England internationals. We should not stand in the way of players who want the best from their careers, and the draw of European football and continuing international appearances is a great ambition. However, they have agreed to long term contracts for which they were well paid by Saints, so at least make sure we are not short changed again as is usually the case.

As for the board, there is no credibility in saying something 24 hours before you do a complete U turn. you want fans to back you with their gate money, so at least treat us like intelligent people and tell it as it is. That way you might get more respect.

Looking at the Ricky deal he is the 1 player we can honestly say we have got the best out of before leaving. Signed for £1m scored a hatful of goals, 2 promotions and kept us in the top tier whilst becoming an England player and sold for a profit at 32! Not bad stuff really.

I don't know what to believe about Saints anymore. What a week this has been. First Pochettino leaves. I think this was inevitable and I think he will find that he has bitten off more than he can chew. Yesterday we had a reassuring statement ( well to me anyway) from Mr Krueger telling us there would be no moves til a new Manager is in place. Less than 24 hours later we discover Rickie could be off to Liverpool who seem to want everyone at Saints except Mr Kreuger. This morning we hear that talks are resuming with Man Utd about Luke Shaw. So who do we fans now believe? We need a new Manager in quickly and the Board need to bring in someone with a football background to advise them. Maybe Dave Merrington, Lawrie McMenemy or Matt Le Tiss. We are becoming a joke but whatever happens I have renewed my ticket and will be there again in August. Just hope there's a decent team to watch.

IF we had a manager - IF we were active at the quality end of the transfer market . IF IF IF - then this could be good business for Saints as we need to look to the future and all good things have to come to an end. However, if this move is not followed by some really serious, top quality purchases to ramp up Saints goal scoring capability - a major weakness last season - then it will leave us wallowing towards relegation. So far I have not seen Saints linked with any player likely to make a step change improvement and when I see us being linked with failed championship managers like Oscar Garcia I start to feel like putting my new season ticket on e.bay!!! Come on Krueger, lets start seeing some massive blows back against the press and all the circling vultures, I am really sick of all the negativity. It was a big mistake to wait on Poch before looking at successors - surely a successor should have been lined up? Block ALL moves and get stuck in to the transfer market - start with Lukaku then I will have some belief. Why not? Shaw out, Lukaku in - Bingo.

A lot of those 'management candidates' will have scrubbed us off their job search list right now. I knew this wouldn't end well with our prize assets away with the World Cup squad and the omnipresent pack of hyenas.
Is this some sort of macabre test to see what sort of Saints and England fans we are?
Nothing short of a fantasy statement from the club that is actually true would redress this travesty now.
HOW HAS THIS BEEN ALLOWED TO HAPPEN NOW?
Season Ticket Sales/ World Cup/ No manager in place?

Would Liverpool sell Suarez? Would Man United sell Rooney, neiter were fr sale at any price, and most certainly not to a competitor in the top 6.
Obviously Man United and Liverpool are dictating terms to our club and whatever tough talking Ralph Kreuger and Les Reed are doing it is far from convincing to the media and to the clubs concerned.
Its about time we tightened up the contracts these players are signing to include a loyalty clause with highly punitive costs against individuals who are not prepared think of their club before themselves.
What is this player obsession with wanting o play Champons League football, it is killing football.
Personally if we sell Ricky ,it will demonstrate that Les Reed has totallyl lost it and is not on the same planet as the rest of us.

This makes no sense at all for SFC. What can we do with £4million. We should have argued hard for at least as much money as it would cost us to replace Ricky. The issue is not whether it is good for Ricky, who has been outstanding for us, the issue is what is the club doing for the interests of the club and supporters. We should have told Liverpool to go away, until such time as Ricky put in a transfer request and we got a good price for him. £4 million is peanuts. Krueger's comments yesterday are so hollow now and show that he is either stupid or incompetent or both. It was bad enough listening to the PR speak, but today shows it was allot air- why do we sell a key player when we don't have a manager, he said we will only sell on our terms. If £4million is our terms that makes no sense unless we have someone as good as Ricky lined up- i am not holding my breath.

No doubt, very soon, and again, we'll be given more bull about our Academy and a vague vision for Euro football It's clear that we will struggle next season with such an incompetent Board at the helm.

The only sale that would have been given the fans' blessing prior to the new manager being appointed, is Osvaldo. Why isn't Les Reed concentrating on a deal for Ossie?

All in all, our fans are being lied to. The clear agenda is selling our prized assets. Why doesn't KL just sell us to someone who actually has Saints' best interests at heart.

Question is whether the ecomics of information is purely from a 'our ball, our game' perspective or driven by commercial factors.

Whatever the situation, I wish SRL all the very best of luck and deepest thanks for what he has done for us to be one of the great Saints of recent years. Thank you sir!

I can accept that rumours will circle and players leave, but surely not all at once? If the departures (and potential departures) were staggered, then at least we'd have a better chance of maintaining our morale, positivity and keep building the team. The way the board have handled this so far and now with talks for Shaw apparently re-opening, doesn't fill me with confidence for next season.

It's at times like this the wisdom of Sting really shines through. When he sang "If you love someone, let them go" everyone just thought "Shut up you old knobber" but it's a sentiment that applies perfectly to this situation. It would have been, frankly, ungentlemanly for anyone at the club to stand in the way of this move.

I think you have to view this outside of the context of the club's current turmoil and recognise it for what it is, which is a dream come true. And what is football if not the business of dreams?

We should start a "Groupon for fans". An intermediary, generating all revenues via it on behalf of fans.

When you buy a ticket, buy it via this entity. When you buy a shirt, buy it via this entity.

You commit to the cause by promising only to purchase via the entity (perhaps by transferring funds to an account at a well established bank).

The result is more power to the fans, because the risk of cutting revenue streams would be very real.

Any programmers out there? I would offer some time for that project after this, that is for sure!

Sentiment aside, face the facts. he wanted to go and by refusing to let him I doubt he'd play very well next season. Yes he'd play well enough just to hold his place, but not give the extra needed that he has this past season. Four million for a player with just a couple of complete seasons left in him before he becomes a standby player on the bench seems economic sense. Players may have contracts, but if they are determined to leave they will, as we have seen all to often with other clubs, or they demand astronomical wages to stay. A club can only afford so much without risking bankruptcy and while a lot of you bleat about the club not spending multi millions for a player how much extra are you willing to pay for a ticket so they can afford to spend big time without breaking uefa fair play rules. A lot of you are good spenders of other peoples money and complainers about ticket prices, so face the facts that apart from three or four clubs every other club has to sell the players that want to leave and to make ends meet

Agree with your points, at the end of the day if a player wants to leave, then realistically you cannot stop it from happening and I think the reported £4M is good business for SFC.
The same can be said about Shaw, if we were to get the £27M plus reported, then that again represents good business, why not offer a good deal to Ashley Cole, gain two years out of a very good player, whilst we develop the next crop of talent. £27M can be invested into other areas on the pitch, as a forward will now be priority with JayRod out until at least Oct? I am hoping someone will take Dani O, as he seems to be the only player not mentioned by the media?

Greetings ceba blue. Thanks for the compliments and misplaced sympathy. We are doing just fine, just pausing for breath before further ascents.

I'm afraid you are rather distant from the reality of your club though. Less reborn, more on a life support machine. Supporters have no control over it, only naively hand over their life savings to some latter day pyramid scheme.

You're about as far geographically from Pompey as Pompey are from Saints in status, wealth and reputation.

I can muster a few points related to this perceived debacle from discussions I've had with others on the current situation:

This is 100% business and 0% sport right now. Liverpool have viciously plotted this attack.

Liverpool don't have a tin opener so they're opening it with dynamite.

It's basically the equivalent of a cannibal that is collecting a tooth necklace.

From a positive point of view (one I am struggling with):

We're the most exciting team in the league, clearly. - We've had more attention than any other team since the season's end. We're looking for a new any potentially decent manager. We still have arguably the best academy and we're got a solid, billionaire owner that seems to have a deep sentimental interest in the club. (You can't buy that kind of commitment).

At least we're not boring. What a club to support. What a club. COYR!!!!

.....I suppose it wasn't that difficult to see the positives after all.

Rk is a liar. How can we ever trust what this man says again.

My eight year old cried when I said I may not renew. 'I have been going since I was three dad', (we got relegated to league one after his first couple of games), of course I renewed.
I wonder how he will feel on the first game of the season when non of the squad he hero worships are there and we get tonked?
Being a Saints fan is never easy, but I have a feeling this is going to be the hardest time ever, I have visions of Coventry, we got away with SISI but this could end up the same!

I'm personally really happy for RL but can't help feeling this is a massive blow for Saints and will cost us in the long term.
After all it's not just his goals we lose but his all round play.
Unselfish strikers with an eye for a pass and the ability to create space not to mention other aspects of his game don't come around everyday, and certainly don't for the tiny sum of 5 million plus add on's.
This is also a massive blow for the youngsters experience like RL's is worth it's wait in gold to academy players

According to Wilkepieda, under "Transfer window", the window in England opens on June 9th so I guess Liverpool want a medical this Saturday and because Rickie will fly early evening on Sunday for Miami, they need to have signed before he goes and the signing become official on 9th June.

He will be registrated as a Liverpool player on July 1st when UEFA and FIFA official registrations starts.

'nuff said about RL already!

I posted a few days ago that I had faith in KL and those in whom she in turn had trust (e.g. Krueger). I'm afraid I was naïve. I just hope that Nicola Cortese hasn't given up his attempt to put together a consortium to take the club over but by then it will probably be all too late.

If RL and any other deserter (i.e. Adam and Shaw) cease to be a 'Saints' player only on 1 July, they will at least still be designated as one of ours until after England are eliminated at the World Cup Group stage. Scant consolation, however!

I think Ralph needs to realise that we didn't even qualify for Europe with Shaw, Lallana, Lambert, Rodriguez etc. Sell these players which it looks like we're going to, we stand no chance of Europe. He obviously hasn't got a clue about football and needs to wake up. You can't just replace these players like you can in ice hockey because they won't be as good. Almost thinking about getting a refund on my season ticket. Maybe we all should until they realise they can't just sell all our stars!

Surely the person to blame is KL. She appointed the board and set RK's objectives. How do know she hasn't just used RK to get some of her money back by selling players, reduce the budget and turn us into a middle of the table team who sells off it's best players on a regular basis.

Even though the rhetoric from Ralph says the opposite to jolly us along and renew our season tickets in the hope of European football. In the mean time RK brings in a manager/coach who is willing to work with lower grade players/academy kids and improve them, while keeping wages at a low level. Then we go through the whole sell off process again. She would then be in the business of producing quality professional footballers and not in the business of providing sports entertainment for loyal customers.

As long as we stay in the PL that could be a better business proposition for her than trying to build a top 6 PL team.

If I'm wrong then she is still to blame if we end up with a shambles on the pitch because she appointed RK and the board, except of course Les Reed.

RALPH YOU SAID 'ONLY IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE CLUB'
This is not, but it is for Ricky and of all the players he has earned it. So a good price for a player of his age.

DO NOT SELL ANY OTHER OF OUR YOUNG STARS
Weaken us and strengthen our opponents next season is stupid. How is that in the best interest of the club ?

Get Benitez in and keep the rest, use Osvaldo in an exchange deal for one we do want and get 3 more top quality players in and we will push on.

Liverpool Melwood training ground is waiting for you Ricky ! ! !

Bill Shankly once described it as “a sorry wilderness”.
When the legendary Liverpool FC boss was shown around Melwood following his appointment in 1959 he was shocked by the state of the dilapidated training ground in West Derby.
He said: “One pitch looked as if a couple of bombs had been dropped on it. ‘The Germans were over here, were they?’ I asked.”
It boasted an old cricket pavilion with no heating alongside a crumbling air-raid shelter.
Shankly set about revolutionising the place during his reign and 55 years on the site now boasts a state-of-the-art facility.
Every day during the season hundreds of fans gather outside the iron gates hoping to catch a glimpse of their heroes and bag a few prized autographs as the players head for home.
This summer, while Brendan Rodgers’ stars either take a well earned break or go in search of glory in Brazil, the doors have been thrown open with supporters given the opportunity to go behind the scenes at Melwood.
The tour provides a fascinating insight into the daily lives of the manager and his players.
It begins outside the frosted glass front of the building which is adorned with a giant Liver bird. It’s the spot where Liverpool will parade their new signings when the players return to duty in July.
From there knowledgeable guide Alan Herr leads everyone into the media room where Rodgers faces the world’s press on a weekly basis. The room is also used for team meetings with a giant screen available for video analysis.
Then it’s into the plush reception area where there are two striking permanent fixtures.
Fittingly, close to the main entrance sits a bronze bust of Shankly with the quote: “Above all, I would like to be remembered as a man who was selfless, who strove and worried so that others could share the glory, and who built up a family of people who could hold their heads up high and say ‘We are Liverpool’.”
It’s the first thing players and staff see on their arrival each morning closely followed by a gleaming European Cup encased in a glass box to provide inspiration.
“It was Rafa Benitez’s idea to put it there,” said Herr. “But that’s just a replica, the real one we got to keep in 2005 is in the museum.”
Below the trophy is a quote from the Spaniard: “To me, being part of Europe’s elite is central to this club’s ethos.”
Then it’s through the usually locked door and into Melwood’s inner sanctum. First stop is the boot room – the traditional black and white footwear of the coaching staff in stark contract to the array of colours favoured by Luis Suarez and co on the opposite rack.
This is where players put on their special vests which have a built in GPS system that collects a multitude of statistics on speed, distance, heart rate, accelerations and decelerations.
It’s especially useful in pre-season but is also used throughout a campaign to tailor training schedules and help identify the risk of injuries.
There are three outdoor pitches which are served by 23 miles of undersoil heating. The middle pitch which has exactly the same dimensions as Anfield – 101 metres by 68 metres – is currently being relaid. Melwood also boasts an indoor 3G surface.
The tour takes you into the physio room and the vast array of medical equipment and then past the hydro pool used for rehabilitation and into the gym.
Motivational quotes adorn the walls from Muhammad Ali’s “I hated every minute of training, but I said ‘don’t quit, suffer now, and live the rest of your life as a champion” to Michael Jordan’s “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.”
Rodgers recently described Raheem Sterling as his ‘Man of Steel’ and tour guide Herr revealed that the stats back that up.
“Raheem is the quickest in the squad and pound for pound he’s also the strongest player,” he said.
The modern complex has been around since 2001 and the design was heavily influenced by then manager Gerard Houllier.
The Frenchman wanted to ensure players stayed around after training and hit the gym before continuing up the stairs and into the canteen where the squad eat together.
“It’s not free though,” revealed Herr. “All the staff and even the players have to pay for their meals. It’s taken out of their wages each month.”
There is also a giant TV screen surrounded by sofas and pool and table tennis tables.
With so much of the past celebrated around Melwood, Rodgers has put some focus on the present by having a montage put on the wall of iconic images from his reign to date.
From there, it’s out on to the landing in front of the manager’s office where the pictures aren’t of star players but the club’s famed support.
“A lot of thought has gone into it,” Herr said. “This is the last thing the players see before they head down the stairs and out to the coach or to their cars. It’s about reminding the players who they are playing for.”
Tours, which include a mini-tour of Anfield and return transport to Melwood from the stadium, run every day until 22 June 2014 and cost £30 for adults and £15 for children. For further information go to www.liverpoolfc.com/

Fittingly, close to the main entrance sits a bronze bust of Shankly with the quote: “Above all, I would like to be remembered as a man who was selfless, who strove and worried so that others could share the glory, and who built up a family of people who could hold their heads up high and say ‘We are Liverpool’.” It’s the first thing players and staff see on their arrival each morning closely followed by a gleaming European Cup encased in a glass box to provide inspiration. “It was Rafa Benitez’s idea to put it there,” said Herr. “But that’s just a replica, the real one we got to keep in 2005 is in the museum.” Below the trophy is a quote from the Spaniard: “To me, being part of Europe’s elite is central to this club’s ethos.” Then it’s through the usually locked door and into Melwood’s inner sanctum. Motivational quotes adorn the walls from Muhammad Ali’s “I hated every minute of training, but I said ‘don’t quit, suffer now, and live the rest of your life as a champion” to Michael Jordan’s “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” Rodgers recently described Raheem Sterling as his ‘Man of Steel’ and tour guide Herr revealed that the stats back that up. It’s taken out of their wages each month.” There is also a giant TV screen surrounded by sofas and pool and table tennis tables. It’s about reminding the players who they are playing for.” Tours, which include a mini-tour of Anfield and return transport to Melwood from the stadium, run every day until 22 June 2014 and cost £30 for adults and £15 for children. I actually feel sorry for our friendly neighbours, quite what your board is up to is beyond belief. Tell you what, if you want to see a great season of attaching football next year why not make the 24 mile trip west down to road to AFCB, we are currently enjoying a great time  ….best be quick though as we do not have many seats!
Or take an even quicker route with less traffic and watch quality football at Pompey or even see 'attaching football' without the 'K'.

Are you for real a sinking ship don't make us laugh or we send the under 15 to teach you a lesson boy ! Deluded fans the fish fiddlers are !
Come on 'Killared' don't be too harsh on our neighbours you know it's very unlikely they will have many decent players remaining before their preseason seriously gets underway...top 6? more like bottom six sadly.

If you weren't all contaminated by anti social diseases at Pimpey we might have loaned you one or two of our reserves to try to get you out of the dire straits you are currently enjoying.

Trouble is we would have a real problem trying to sell Pimpey as a worthwhile loan spell to our ball boys let alone a pro with any self respect so it's probably a non-starter.

Sorry lads - you'll have to tread the sewage of Fartton Krap on your own for another 10 years or so. What a sense of accomplishment you'll have though, the first time you can pay the wages and get through a season without someone washing their money in your toilet bowls. Hope your season is going to be half as much fun as our is at the human end of the M27.
Pay up Pimpey, Pimpey pay up.
