Adam Lallana has targeted a place in England’s starting line-up for the first match of the World Cup, after a strong performance in the 3-0 win against Peru.

The Saints captain featured for the first 73 minutes at Wembley, and did his chances of playing a key role in Brazil this summer no harm at all.

England now fly to Miami for friendlies against Ecuador and Honduras, before jetting to South America, with their opening World Cup fixture, against Italy, taking place on June 14.

Lallana is hoping to retain his starting berth for that game.

“I was delighted (to start). Obviously, getting in the starting line-up for the first game in Manaus is what everyone’s striving for, and hopefully I’ve done enough to impress the manager and show him what I’m capable of,” he said.

“It was a good result and we move onto the next game.”

Lallana, who was not allowed to talk about club matters, added: “It’s been a great week, a hard week’s training, a good bit of fitness, wearing layers to try and adapt for what we’re coming into.

“The weather’s not been too kind to us this week, but the fitness of everyone is looking good.

“We haven’t picked up any injuries, so that’s the main thing. We’ll recover and fly out to Miami on Sunday.

“It’s a big week, we’ve got two big games out there in tough conditions, so we’ll look to put in a couple of good performances like we did today.”

Lallana said he was excited about the prospect of what lies ahead, although admitted it is still hard to totally get his head around.

“It’s a strange feeling, you just want to take it all in, but it seems to be happening so quickly,” he said.

Just hope you come back a SAINTS player but i wont hold my breath. 25 million is a pizz's take.I use to like Liverpool but now i hope they lose every european football game they play this coming season. There the one team i would really like to take six points from this coming season. First home game would be great.

If he becomes a Liverpool player will not have the slightest interest. Same goes for Shaw if he leaves and Lambert - well he's already gone.

Mr "LB" must be turning in his grave, he came in and rescued Saints to make Southampton a Team to be among the biggest and best in Europe, it so nearly happened, and now the so called "Big Clubs" come in and poach our Players, and we are back to square one, these Big Clubs would be nowhere without the likes of Saints. get your hands off of our Boys "COYRS"

You wonder what the point of the academy is, if the only benefit we get from it is a few quid every so often and the contempt of the rest of the League.
I can't remember a close season I have enjoyed less, and it has hardly started!

I have never seen the national press turn on a club like ours these last few weeks, I've rarely read such two-faced cr@p from any club chairman.

I can't remember looking forward to a World Cup less and I can't remember ever having given less of a stuff to see a (soon to be departed) Saint in an England top.

I'm p!ssed off.

Scrap the academy and go back to what we used to do, ie buy players when we need them, like most clubs.
Let another club put up with all this sh!t, I'm fed up with it.
