Croatia boss warns of potential World Cup 'circus' after Dejan Lovren penalised in Brazil success

Daily Echo: Dejan Lovren, left, can't believe he has been penalised for a foul on Fred Dejan Lovren, left, can't believe he has been penalised for a foul on Fred

Croatia coach Niko Kovac labelled a controversial penalty award against Saints defender Dejan Lovren as "ridiculous" and warned that the World Cup will turn into "a circus" if referees do not improve.

Japanese official Yuichi Nishimura awarded Brazil a soft spot-kick in the opening match of the tournament in Sao Paulo - the score was 1-1 at the time and hosts Brazil went on to win 3-1.

Brazil striker Fred won the penalty after going down despite being barely touched by Lovren.

Kovac said: "I don't think anybody, anywhere in the stadium, saw this as a penalty. If you continue like this you will have 100 penalties. I think 2.5billion people watching on TV saw this was not a penalty.

"This was ridiculous and if we continue in this way we will have a circus.

"Fred is an 85kg man and I don't believe he can be brought to the ground in such a manner.

"I cannot blame Fred at all - everyone tries it on. Like it or not, this is part and parcel of football. What I want is for referees to stick to the laws of the game and apply them equally to both teams."

Croatia had opened the scoring courtesy of an own goal by Marcelo, but Neymar equalised and then despatched the penalty, with Oscar getting a third late on.

Kovac added: "I would like to congratulate Brazil as they are a great opponent, but I am proud of my team. I am a sporting person and Brazil were excellent, but I believe Croatia deserved at least a point out of this game."

I am sure this won't be the last controversial penalty in this World Cup. Players fall down too easily nowadays but the trouble it's part of the game now. Falling down is just as bad as defenders holding people in the goal mouth,
Until the referees start penalising this type of thing it will continue to get worse. Neymar was lucky not to get a red card after the deliberate elbowing in the face of the Croat player.
Brazil are not the side of previous years as there defence looks shaky. I think teams like Spain and Argentina will really test the Brazil defence.

Aint gonna happen - We saw him play against SPURS AWAY and we have seen the mistakes he has made over the Season - although overall he had a solid Season.

HIS CONTINED DEVELOPMENT would continue at SFC where he would grow as a Player and be appreciated by the fans.

All the man handling at corners and free kicks needs to be sorted. It will only take one brave ref to award a pen and it all stop immediately.

Instead of the ref stopping the kick being taken and lecturing the players he should let the game flow and award the penalty.

As for last nights pen, lovren did have his arms around the player and the ref spotted it, soft yes, but sometimes they are given sometimes not.... Lovren took a huge risk and it backfired.

I thought Lovren should have done better to close down the first goal. Seemed to be a very half hearted attempt to block the shot.

Never was a penalty, BUT by putting his hand on Fred's shoulder, he gave the ref the chance to make the decision. And as it was for Brazil, he was always likely to give it. Home team bias.

Thought he was caught in two minds for the final goal, not wanting to get too tight to Oscar, in case he turned inside, but then got caught out, like the keeper, with the early shot.

Won't have done his value much good.

I appreciate the humour in your posing. Unfortunately there is a very serious aspect. Reed is not up to the job and the owners should recognise it now. The atmosphere at St Mary is already plummeting. Reed has take too long to sort out problems with staff and general organisation. He appears too laid back, "rounded" and smug in his near retirement salary boost. Where is my season ticket too? It is late, like every thing else, it appears. I hope Brasil get jibbed 7-0 by Spain, Argentina or Germany in the semis.

I cannot agree with you. Reed has been led by events rather than heading off the obvious. He had long enough to sort out and respond to the previous manager's needs, and players' ambitions. He did nothing. Last year's team was a wonderful opportunity for investment. He has failed to communicate the opportunity to the owner. He has failed to use the Press, and his administration looks tardy. I could quite believe that he will install a manager with little or no European contacts, because that is the sort of person Reed is. Too set in his ways, unimaginative and with enough baggage from his previous career to sink an aircraft carrier, let alone our club.

How come it hasn't leaked to the media as several people would need to be in the know to make this one happen? Christ, now that would make the football world sit up and take note wouldn't it! There'd be no more players wanting away if we managed to capture the legend that is Steve Bruce. He might even tempt some of the Hull lads to join. I was worried about our ambition when we were linked with Koeman and Mancini but maybe they were just a smoke screen whilst the big one was being done behind the scenes. I would clap and clap and clap if we get Bruce.

Lovren tugs on opponents shoulder who goes down like a sack of **** because
he's been coached that way. Lovren should have known better. The referee gives the penalty as an example of what we can expect in the next few weeks.
He refereed the game well, with a few mistakes which happens in every game.
Now we may end up watching the officials rather than the players.
England be warned, not all of the officials will be as good as last nights.
Best try and play with your arms folded!

If it's Bruce then the very last scrap of "feel good factor" with the fans will drain away. He's not an idiot but we expect a high profile international name with a penchant for attacking football and enough of a reputation to bring top players here. Not much to ask? Who knows? But whatever you ask, the answer is NOT Bruce.

If they pick him then I will know for sure the club is being sold.

I have a funny feeling you could be on the money here.
The paperwork that Reed spoke about seems to be taking an eternity.
Reed should go now, or we will regret it!
Bingo I am not joking and I wish I was.
Steve Bruce will be the next manager of southampton or I will never post on this site again.
(Que all jokes about every cloud etc.)
Are you sure? Apart from being fat and useless he is quite a nice chap. Why would we appoint him when we would have to pay off Hull? How come it hasn't leaked to the media as several people would need to be in the know to make this one happen? I remember when he did the dirty on Palace to go to Birmingham so if he's prepared to do the same to Hull he'd be right up our street.
We've seen it all before. Old English manager wanting a pleasant location for his family at Sandbanks. Not up to the dynamic standards of the previous two managers. Turning up for training at 11am. Win or lose, the sun bed awaits, its only Southampton. Those supporters will turn up whether we succeed or not. Let the other clubs approach our players through the media, its only Southampton. They will be happy if we roll out Laurie McMenemy from time to time, to recall the past brief glory. Keep Dave Merrington on Radio Solent, he will support the in-tray attitude. No feathers need to be ruffled here. I am sick of how we have been treated by Reed and co., Hardly a mention on the tv and radio that Southampton FC, YES SOUTHMPTON FC, sent three players to Brazil. All we hear is that they want leave. Dear Mr Reed, from a loyal paying customer, please enter retirement immediately. I am about the same age as you, I seek no OAP concession for my season ticket, but do expect you to work your genitals off for Southampton FC.

Poch was quietly lined up by Cortese who was the only one who knew he was going to sack Adkins. Here we have a vacant managerial position so from a betting point of view this is very different.

I have to say if a contact I knew well had assured me that Bruce was the man (as opposed to a poster on this site) then at 14/1 I would put every thing I could raise on to it. If you know for sure why aren't you taking free money?

Its about time football used video referee's! It works well in other sports such as rugby and cricket. If used correctly for penalty decisions and whether a goal should stand or not for a possible foul as in last nights game. It would take no longer than 30 seconds to have checked both of those decisions last night and in fairness more time than that was lost by the Croation players surrounding the referee in protest!

NO WAY We do not want to encourage all sorts of game time stoppages In cricket and rugby they happen naturaly Even the stupid suggestion that coaches can issue 2 challenges during a game should be put back into the toy cupboard
What we need is more well trained, fit active referees If the standard at the opening game is the bench mark then mayhem will ensue
unfortunately when you have players cheating by diving it is impossible for the referee to make the right call every time! This kind of thing will continue to happen time and time again until the ref gets extra support!

Over here I only got 4/1 odds and I took that.
You may have been robbed, you can get 16/1 at bet365. Where is over here?
5/6 RK. 7/2 RM. 9/1 CR. 11/1 TT. 16/1 NL. 33/1 bar.

Dejan didn't put his arms around fred, he didn't pull/push him nor did he tug him. all he did was place a hand on freds shoulder, if that's enough for some of you on here to award penalty then football has gone as a sport and we might as well just have penalty shootouts! Fred dived and cheated end of. he should now be hit with a 3 game ban.
I think some of you are allowing ashtons guess work, which supplied no facts or quotes from anyone, to cloud your judgements. personally I tend to believe the words spoken by the player himself, `I`m happy at saints, I know of the interest in me but its up to the club to decide`. if you want to believe ashton and ben smith that's your choice, but don't moan that you only want players who show loyalty when you aren't showing any loyalty to the players! why would anyone want to come here when they have seen players turned on like this, or when they see guly booed by his home fans for coming on as a sub? or fox being given awful abuse and hounded out of the club? why should our players show any loyalty? I remember seeing them shake their heads in disbelief when guly was booed, do you not think that might have an affect on how players see the club and its fans? I hope those of you who treated our players like that might just realise the results of your actions. I remember fox saying something about being at a good club with `proper fans` after he left us!
so are we going to stop abusing our own players or shall we keep picking on certain players until we`ve got rid of them all?

I have a funny feeling you could be on the money here.
The paperwork that Reed spoke about seems to be taking an eternity.
Reed should go now, or we will regret it!
Bingo I am not joking and I wish I was.
Steve Bruce will be the next manager of southampton or I will never post on this site again.
(Que all jokes about every cloud etc.)
You can get 14-1 at the bookies on Bruce, you should bet the farm, your shirt and all your savings on it! You would then be smug and 14 times better off than you are now!

Dejan was stiffed with that penalty decision and perhaps Neymar could have seen red for his elbow on Modric, oh the injustice of football .... we all know it well. I’d give the ref 7/10, apart from those 2 decisions he had a good game.
There is a weird undertone by the Brazilian people to this world cup. They’ve wanted to host it all their lives but now feel they have been screwed by their government in lack of spending on social infrastructure at the expense of lining Blatter’s FIFA pockets and white elephant stadiums. If Brazil get knocked out early, I fear it will be messy. If Argentina beat them in the final I fear it will be worse, hopefully Blatter doesn’t get out alive either way.

Mush On The Beach

GOOD Post - it's great to a mix of views on this Forum.

LOYALTY should be rewarded - For me, I would play Kelvin Davis - loyal Club Captain in the League Cup if he INSISTS on not retiring and getting into Coaching.

What is FAIR though - is to get another GK to give serious competition to Artur Borac and play the New GK or our current Number 1 in the FA CUP and really give it a good go to get to WEMBLEY.

Seed - What do you think .... ?

You would love that, wouldn't you?
It would give you the opportunity to have a good rant. What better way to start a sunny summer Friday, hey?!?
I would not love that but that is who Leslie has appointed.
Actually it is evening here in melbourne after an over cast dull day.
Oh well, what a shame! Not a cloud in the sky here.
I didn't realise you were one of those ITK people. My apologies!
Yeah I have an inside source at the club and he told me.....
STEVE BRUCE!!!!!
If I am wrong you will never see me on here again
My saucy source is in a position within the club to have indirect access to certain legal documents.
14/1 on Sky Bet. Go for it!
No no I suggest you go for it.
By the way what were the odds on poch getting the job at saints?
I little bigger than 14/1 I think.
Don't shoot the messenger just because you don't like the message.
There was a time when the messenger would get beheaded upon arrival, just for the principle.
Good old days....
If you behead him on arrival you'd never get the bloody message!
The message would be on a sealed parchment, proving it's origin.
As I said, good old days...
Ahh. Ok, if we get a message on the back of a McDonalds wrapper that Bruce it is, can we at least agree to behead him and Ralph and Les?
You have to feel for him. Penalty or no penalty (and I don't think it should have been given), what he did was hardly a touch compared to the two heavier 'touches' he was on the end of at Spurs last season which led to their first two goals.

I see he's now spoken out about it, too. I wonder how the mighty Sepp Blatter will react to what seems to be a very thinly veiled criticism of FIFA. I fear Dejan might be punished and made an example of.

Next Southampton manager set to be Ronald Koeman as he agrees terms with Saints

Ronald Koeman is set to become Southampton’s new manager.

The Holland legend agreed terms on Friday to succeed Mauricio Pochettino at St Mary’s, and is expected to be unveiled when he returns from holiday.

He was first interviewed a fortnight ago but the deal looked to have stalled because of a dispute over the transfer budget he demanded.

However, the Saints' owner Katharina Liebherr has now promised Koeman a sizeable war chest to revamp the squad he'll inherit.

The ex-Valencia and PSV Eindhoven manager, 51, quit Dutch side Feyenoord at the end of last season following a three-year stint in charge.

Saints drew up a four-man shortlist to replace new Spurs chief Pochettino, including Fulham boss Felix Magath, but ex-Barcelona ace Koeman was always their preferred choice.

His desire to play attractive football and blood young players fitted the Saints’ criteria.
