Ronald Koeman has been appointed as the new manager of Saints, signing a three-year deal with the club.

The Dutch legend replaces Mauricio Pochettino, who walked out of St Mary's last month to join Tottenham Hotspur.

Koeman's brother, Erwin, has been appointed as his assistant manager, while Jan Kluitenberg has followed him from previous club Feyenoord as assistant first team/physical coach.

A "high-calibre" goalkeeping coach will be appointed in the near future.

Koeman said of his appointment: “I am thrilled to be the manager of Southampton Football Club.

“From my very first meeting with Les Reed, I could see clearly that this was the right club for me. We share the same philosophy of football, and the same belief in how to develop the club.

“Southampton have a talented first-team squad, a world-class academy and the infrastructure to sustain success in the Premier League.

“The opportunity to continue the development of this famous football club was simply too good to turn down. I cannot wait to get started.”

As revealed by the Daily Echo, Saints made a formal offer to Koeman on Friday, having identified him as the number-one candidate for the job.

Advisers and lawyers working on his behalf went through the contract over the weekend, with the 51-year-old arriving in Southampton today to sign it.

Koeman first held talks with the club two weeks ago, impressing chairman Ralph Krueger and executive director Les Reed.

Reed said: “We are extremely pleased to have secured a new manager of Ronald Koeman’s calibre and status within the game.

“In appointing Ronald we have concluded our search for a manager who shares our values and vision for the future of Southampton Football Club.

“As part of our ongoing scouting process, we have been following the development of Ronald’s coaching career for some time and, through a more formal process this month, immediately identified him as our number-one choice.

“From the moment we met with Ronald, it was clear he had the vision and ambition to take our club forward, that he shared our football philosophy and could see the opportunity to move our club to the next level.

“The club, the players and the fans will all be excited to have a man of Ronald’s experience at the very highest level joining our club.

“Ronald’s passion for the opportunity here at St Mary’s was very clear, and we look forward to continuing our growth with him as part of our team.”

Sounds like the board are providing him with plenty of transfer resources and of course we've got the state-of-the-art new training facilities up and running.

Another cup - Portugese Super Cup in 2005, Dutch league with PSV 2006/7. Copa Del Rey (Spanish F.A Cup) with Valencia 2007/8, Johan Cruyff Shield winner 2002 & 2009 with AZ Alkamaar. As a player won everything except the World Cup. Managed by Cruyff at Barcelona, promotes youth & total football (at Feyenoord he started with a bunch of kids and helped oust Graham Taylor in 2004 - do I not like orange)..

I am just glad we are not in West Brom fans's shoes with their 'lets take us down to the next level' appointment. This is good news. By the way we are not a feeder club, we are just a club who are victims of their own success producing players who rightly or wrongly want to move to what they perceive to be their next level. This is the way of the football world. Hopefully with this appointment, the intentions of the club are becoming clearer or will be made claer to some of these players who want to move. COYR

Ideal appointment with the right mix of experience, kudos and ambition.

Likes of Benitez and Mancini would never come to the likes of Saints (at the moment anyway) and we're now looking beyond the Bruce's and other lower to middling PL team managers.

Can now look forward to seeing his plans put into place, and to be honest I don't think most fans will worry too much if they include investing the cash from LS, AL and the like, although managing to keep them whilst at the same time strengthening the team with 3 or more quality signings would certainly send out a message to the big boys.

Looking forward to next season already. Only Saints could continue to rise from the firestorm that everyone said was engulfing us when Potch went. How wrong they were.

Heh. I'm hoping it'll be a long, long time before I have to change it again.

We're sort of where Swansea were when Liverpool nicked Rodgers off them. They promptly went out and brought in Laudrup who then signed Michu and they had a great time. I remain pretty confident we'll start next season in better shape than we finished last.

Note to the DE editor now is the time to get onside and end this feud you have with Saints you will feel better for it I guarantee.

This is great news now we will see some back pedalling from the doom mongers, finally we move on to bigger and better times

Well done Katharina, Ralph, Les and his team, good choice.

Just imagine, we took an unknown (MOPO) made him a good manager, we now have a top well known coach who will turn out to be a fantastic manager, who I am sure will lead us to the top table with attractive football and a desire to win in all competitions. I say to those who want away, if you leave you will regret it when Saints are on top next season and those teams trying to poach our players are playing catch up. I really do believe we have the right foundation in place to be up at the top and not just a one season wonder.

Currently being a cup half empty person I view this appointment semi enthusiastically. Saints appoint a journeyman manager, though I suppose most are these days, unproven in the Premier League who chose to ditch a team that qualified for the Champions League for us. Of course all the right things have been said but I am now so jaundiced that I wouldn't be surprised if we were hailing the arrival of a new manager in 12 or 18 month's time.

Of course he may persuade everyone to stay and oversee a more successful season than the last, though I doubt it. At least he won't have long to wait for our England stars to return to start negotiations.

Most of them wishing they had signed Koeman instead of Cappuccino. When Spurs play at home they expect a goal and if they haven't scored after 30 min it creates a horrible atmosphere. I can imagine Cappuccino and his cronies will be saying quite a lot next season "A la mierda esto para un juego de soldados" . Or as we say in English "Feck this for a game of soldiers"

Just because I am not hailing the arrival of Mr Koeman with the same unbridled enthusiasm and optimism as the majority on here doesn't mean that I am not entitled to a slightly different point of view. And surely a little dissent doesn't mean I therefore support another team?. Deary me.

Couldn't agree more will the doubters of this board and club please now leave the argument. Onward s and upwards now get signing some players and make even Rickie regret wanting to leave this club. The future England team play at Southampton as well as three of the present, I'm including Jay Rodrigues in this. Give us Liverpool really early, preferably after the first failure in the Champions league and then Spurs after a nice long trip to Eastern europe in the Europa league!! COYR

The news hacks are saying that our new manager has got a real job on his hands trying to keep hold of our wannaways and that Rickie Lambert was the first to leave, You will all remember that Rickie was about to be sold to Wet Spam last January and lets face it he served us well but £4,000000 was too good an offer to refuse if Liverpool get a whole season from him, then they should regard themselves lucky but then methinks he will spend more time on the bench than on the pitch, as for the other wanaways there are better players out there if we sign them, then why worry about them.

At least he won't have long to wait for our England stars to return to start negotiations.
Which team do you support?
Just because I am not hailing the arrival of Mr Koeman with the same unbridled enthusiasm and optimism as the majority on here doesn't mean that I am not entitled to a slightly different point of view. And surely a little dissent doesn't mean I therefore support another team?. Deary me.
Yes all can have an opinion, it works both ways though! If you feel this way on the first day I hope when the new season starts you are pleasantly surprised to see just how far this team could go. Have a good time next season.

What's the matter can you not read your local paper due to it being printed in Jewish or does nothing exciting ever happen at your place.
It must be really hard supporting spurs. Waste lots of money fail to finish above other London clubs who spend less, not getting near your local rivals, living in the past and then sacking your manager, and so the sorry episode goes on. Still keep living in the past telling yourself your a big club and I along with many others will laugh when the above happens all over again......

Confucious
You are so witty I'm laughing as I type.
Ronald Koeman is great signing for everyone especially those who were getting a little impatient and thinking the Board were on there holidays but they can take them now and they deserve it. I've never slagged the Board off because they have big ambitions and do not want to take steps sideways or downwards, they know they are on a mission to keep climbing to the top and they will be excited as all the Supporters will be and hopefully so will the Players, it's time to break the strangle hold of the Clubs considered to be the Top Clubs who think they have a divine right to be there and if Saints can do it next season they too will always want to be at the top to attract top Players and match there financial demands without breaking the Bank.

Ronald will want to deliver the best and now we must relax and see what the Players think especially those who were rumoured to want to leave, nobody wants Adam, Luke and Dejan to leave any more than we wanted Rickie to leave, perhaps when Liverpool asked about he was over whelmed and couldn't believe it.To finish his career where he was born lived and the Club he Supported was something he only dreamed of, I wouldn't be surprised that Rickie had a a lot of tears because he also loves Southampton.

Oh thank goodness! Finally some good news! The best news.
Arguably a manager with more experience and prospects than Mauricio when he arrived.
And a manager who has still to reach his peak and with a name to bring the rest of the premiership right up to speed with Saints position and aspirations.
A managerial appointment that tells us everything about Katherine and the board's intentions.
So, no more undermining and negative thoughts please.
The right man to try and persuade the doubting Luke and Adam to stay (and btw why did we give in so readily to Rickie's desires?!?).
And now we can look forward once more, as we've done throughout the last 5 years (remember the first pre season with Alan Pardew in Switzerland, ha!).
So now we can enjoy the summer and look forward to exciting developments.
Come and Adam, Luke and Dejan, stay on the bus!!! :-)))

It does show Saints ambition to the other clubs and would love to beat Spuds. Lets get the bus moving again.

Now Ron please tell the 'want-aways' they are going nowhere and go get the 4 top quality targets that we need to add to our current squad.
Two top strikers, a pacy winger who can cross a ball well, the best of the three Feyenord centrebacks playing for Holland.
You must make sure that they can be good in the Premiership.

Good Luck Ron we are all behind you, I can't wait, just need a unique red & white shirt COYS

I refuse to say anything nasty about any of our previous managers because that seems hypocritical to me.
When each of them have arrived I have hoped they would bring success to my club.
Once they had left they ceased to be of any interest to me, but remember, football is a funny old game. You never know what is coming next.
When Mopo joined I was surprised at the choice, virtually unknown and no success to call on. The man he was replacing had done wonders with the players at his disposal.
Now Ronko has joined and the players available are more experienced at Prem level and international too.
It really is a brilliant time to be a Saints fan.

If Koeman is successful and decides to move on, then we will be a position to attract another high calibre proven big name. Our scouting team seems excellent (better make sure they don't move on!).

I think Luke will be swayed by silly wages at Man Utd and the chance to play for van Gaal.

I am thrilled that Koeman has joined us, he is the biggest managerial 'name' that we have appointed (certainly since Souness) Maybe Ron will inspire Hooiveld to play like himself at his best

Lee from the Lane - or is that Nutter from the Gutter! Now let me see, we're a selling club huh? Well then you're a big buying club - in fact a huge, massive, humongous spending club - what was it last year? £100 million? And you're a huge club too aren't you? Well, actually, no. You're an average club that's on the brink of insolvency with no youth set up, no record of bringing local talent through (bar the odd exception) and you even have to steal someone else's song! And after all that, after all this spending and all those big club managers and those big club big chief executive big ambitions and big mouths you've won what? How many Champions League campaigns achieved? Can you spell zero? I've given you a hint there by the way! So toddle along there's a good chap and enjoy your stroll down the Lane - memory lane that is, cos that's where you'll find your successes - in the past!

Dear Deidre,

You might remember I wrote to you a few weeks ago to ask your advice after my ex dumped me for someone richer. Well I'm just writing to tell you you were right - I have now found someone else too and all the pain and hurt has just instantly vanished.

I no longer look longingly after my ex, dreaming about how it might have been and looking jealously at their new partner, (who incidentally promised them the earth but hasn't spent a penny yet). Instead, I have found a classy blonde, with an excellent background and now I see only positive things ahead.

So I thank you Deirdre. Your advice to "cheer up, after all you could be a Skate" kept me going through those dark days.

Lee, assuming you are genuinely a Spurs fan, rather than a Skate, I have a few questions for you.

1. Are you the reason Spurs have a c*ck for their badge?

2. On that point, have you ever thought about what you are actually kissing when you kiss your badge?

3. When you proudly wear the badge on your baseball cap, does it revert to another name to reflect that you are a d1ck-head?

How long till you get as good as us at playing keep ball in our own half? That's what you will become really good at with Pottychino at the healm. Can't wait to play you next season, sooooo predictable. Hope you enjoy your season, Loosers!!!

WOMAN'S DIARY

Saturday 12 April 2014

Saw him in the evening and he was acting really strangely.

I'd been shopping in the afternoon with the girls and was a bit late
meeting him, thought it might be that.

The bar was really crowded and loud, so I suggested we go somewhere quieter to talk.

He was still very subdued and distracted so I suggested we went
somewhere nice to eat.

All through dinner he just didn't seem himself - he hardly laughed
and didn't seem to be paying any attention to me or to what I was
saying. I just knew that something was wrong.

He dropped me back home and I wondered if he was going to come in.

He hesitated but followed.

I asked him what was wrong, but he just half shook his head and
turned the television on.

After about ten ! minutes of silence I said that I was going upstairs
to bed, I put my arms around him and told him that I loved him
deeply.

He just gave a sigh and a sad sort of smile.

He didn't follow me up immediately but came up later and, to my
surprise, we made love - but he still seemed distant and a bit cold.

I cried myself to sleep - I think he's planning to leave me - maybe he's
found someone else.

Go back to whatever lane you are from and enjoy a one season wonder of a manager who only knows one way of playing. Yes , plenty of possession but no real penetration. Yes ,plays in the oppositions half with not enough goals. That style of play where you press and press requires hard working british players that will run for you all day, not that over paid bunch of under achievers you have there at the moment. Good luck my friend , I will give mopo one season before he is given the elbow.

Not surprising really, not all were happy to see MoPo leave, but for different reasons, many decent fans had recognised how much good he had done getting us where we are now, we at least should be grateful for that. With his mentor gone and maybe not seeing the vision of the new Management Committee it was always on the cards that he would go elsewhere.
I would criticise his choice of Club but it was an offer that suited his purpose, so good luck to him, but I can't see him making out any better than any of the other incumbents.

I am not expecting RonKo to have an immediate impact, I am hoping he will consolidate the Team, keeping anyone that sees him as worth playing for, and unloading any that don't want to be here. He must have agreed on a decent transfer kitty and we hopefully will see some quality players joining us, but he will want to have his own team, that will complement what has gone before, whatever he does we need to back his judgement, but I appreciate that others on here will be critical and that is their right to put their views, this shouldn't mean that anyone who disagrees should be abusive, it isn't Saintly.

I see recent events as a set back in our ambitions, it could still go either way, but I know which direction I want to go in the future, it's time to put the past behind us.
