Van Gaal will speak to Mourinho over claims that signing Luke Shaw from Saints would have 'killed' Chelsea

Louis van Gaal looks set to speak to Jose Mourinho over his claim that signing Luke Shaw would have "killed" Chelsea.

Former Saints starlet Shaw became the fourth-most expensive defender in history this summer when he signed for Manchester United for an initial fee of £27million.

Chelsea, who Shaw supported as a youngster, were interested in the 19-year-old, but Mourinho revealed he pulled out of a bid to sign the player due to his wage demands.

The Chelsea manager claimed Shaw's reported wages of around £100,000 a week were way too large for a player who only made his Premier League debut in November 2012.

"If we pay to a 19-year-old boy what we were being asked for, to sign Luke Shaw, we are dead," Mourinho was quoted as saying.

"We would have killed our stability with financial fair play and killed the stability in our dressing room, because when you pay that much to a 19-year-old kid - a good player, fantastic player - but when you pay that amount of money, the next day, we would have had players knocking on our door.

"They would have been saying, 'How is it possible I play 200 games for this club, won this and that, yet a 19-year-old comes here and gets more money than I get?'"

Van Gaal refused to get drawn into a public war of words with Mourinho - a former protege of his at Barcelona - but it appears he will discuss the matter privately with the Portuguese.

"I don't think I have to discuss things in the media, it's better to discuss it with Jose," he said.

The Premier League is devalued as a competition by the cartel of clubs at the top enticing greedy players and their agents with stupid money. Chelsea are part of that cartel so I've no sympathy whatsoever. One of the reasons that Saints are being stripped of their best players is to protect the cartel at the top. They don't fancy the prospect of another club joining them at the top table. Keep it tight, keep it exclusive, keep the TV & Champions League cash. That's why the same clubs predominate every season. Sucks doesn't it...

All football clubs, from the biggest to the smallest, have wage structures. Saints have to pay players wages appropriate to the income of the club. There is no way a club with a stadium of 32,000 capacity can compete on wages against clubs of 45,000 stadium capacity and upwards, especially when those clubs have 75 million quid a year sponsorship deals, dwarfing the sponsorship of smaller clubs.

Perhaps this news about Luke Shaw's wage demands hits the nail on the head as to why several players have left Saints. Rickie Lambert, though, wanted to go home to Liverhampton, but I bet his wages increased. The rest are no doubt simply chasing money, with the help of their agents.

If all that is true, it is understandable why Saints are endeavouring to improve the commercial side of the club. The aim is to grow SFC. Saints would compete better with an enlarged stadium, or a larger stadium elsewhere. Ralph Krueger has said that he wants Saints to be football's version of the NFL's Green Bay Packers. That is a worthy aim.

I'll start off all those who automatically give me a thumbs down (bless them) with a thumbs down for this post!

Who gives a monkeys. Shaw is history. Why should we be interested in this story when our team is systematically being allowed to be taken apart!
Already we are being highlighted by the press as relegation fodder, KL and the board must feel really proud of themselves. They should write a book on 'how not to run a football club'.
Even if we recruit a bunch of players many other clubs have struggled with mass player change. This is why we did so well last season stability was the word from the manager and players. It currently feels completely the opposite simply because Les Reid doesn't have the balls to say no. As I said yesterday he wrecked Charlton and he's doing the same at our club.
I remember seeing him on Sky sports gloating last year about Saints performance. The communication from the club is zero probably because they know they have fed us a pack of lies.
No matter how good the manager is if he doesn't have experienced PL players the team will struggle. This won't make good reading for the happy clappers and hand wringers but enough is enough.

This won't make good reading for the happy clappers and hand wringers but enough is enough.
so you think les should have said know despite luke being told last summer that he would be allowed to go this year? you think that lukes wage demands of £100k a week would be ok here? how long do you think les should have said no for? for the remainder of lukes contract so he can go for free and the club miss out on £30mill? or do you think that after another season here luke would have had a change of heart and pledged his entire playing career to us for £30k a week?
we could never match lukes £100k a week, even if we did how many other players would ask for huge increase? do we give them all £100k a week and bankrupt the club?
or do you think that we would have become a `huge` team like manure or diverpooh and offer regular european football in a couple of years?

this will make horrible reading for the wums and neggies but why would they bother with facts and figures? pay the players what they want, build a 90k stadium buy £50mill players, who cares its not your money is it?
I don't disagree with you about Shaw as it would seem that this transfer had been agreed for sometime, and agreed is he worth £100k a week NO.
What I am on about as are many others on here is that the team is slowly being taken apart, and many of us are really nervous of what's in store. As we know when we got back into the PL it was no fun watching the team get beat every week. We could afford to lose one player but so many I don't think so.
Sorry that's my opinion just as you have yours, and there are plenty others that are concerned about this current situation just like me.

Agree with your sentiments, especially about our place in the pecking order, but the size of crowd hardly matters any more. We probably male about 15-20 million a year (max) from, gate receipts. If we extended to 45 k, we'd have an additional 7 million or so. Shaw's wages will be 5-6 million a year minimum, so if we gave that to him, Lallana, Lovren, Chambers, etc. etc, how would we justify it? Money comes from TV, and sponsorship, and we can't compete. Sad, but true...

It is getting very difficult to find a silver lining to all this stuff.
But.
At least it has been shown to us just how much Luke Shaw was wanted and it would have been absofuckinglutely impossible to keep him.
That story is going to be repeated throughout the entire team.
We are really going to have to fight to keep the rest of our better players.
The positive of all this?
At least we can be certain that the players still here on September 1st will probably want to fight for their careers, nobody wants to be in the betting as nailed on relegation .
Support the Saints, it was easy for a while now we have to work at it again.

This won't make good reading for the happy clappers and hand wringers but enough is enough.
so you think les should have said know despite luke being told last summer that he would be allowed to go this year? you think that lukes wage demands of £100k a week would be ok here? how long do you think les should have said no for? for the remainder of lukes contract so he can go for free and the club miss out on £30mill? or do you think that after another season here luke would have had a change of heart and pledged his entire playing career to us for £30k a week?
we could never match lukes £100k a week, even if we did how many other players would ask for huge increase? do we give them all £100k a week and bankrupt the club?
or do you think that we would have become a `huge` team like manure or diverpooh and offer regular european football in a couple of years?

this will make horrible reading for the wums and neggies but why would they bother with facts and figures? pay the players what they want, build a 90k stadium buy £50mill players, who cares its not your money is it?

I don't disagree with you about Shaw as it would seem that this transfer had been agreed for sometime, and agreed is he worth £100k a week NO.
What I am on about as are many others on here is that the team is slowly being taken apart, and many of us are really nervous of what's in store. As we know when we got back into the PL it was no fun watching the team get beat every week. We could afford to lose one player but so many I don't think so.
Sorry that's my opinion just as you have yours, and there are plenty others that are concerned about this current situation just like me.
oh im worried about next season dont get me wrong, i know seem to think im not but i can assure you i am.

luke was always going to go, ok we can deal with that but then liverhampton want rickie, when rickie was told he asked to go, ok thats not good but we cant really stand in his way can we? then, or before that, our team captain, our leader on the pitch, the badge kisser in chief, says he wants to go. he isnt brave enough to slap in a transfer request but throws toys so far out of the pram they land in liverpool. threatens the club that he will never play for us again whilst telling fans it doesnt mean the end of his career at saints. so what can the club do? can they force a player to stay? well yes they could if they really wanted, he was forced to stay when he did the same a few years ago. however liverhampton offered £25mill for him, could we turn that amount of money down? the good article in the press today stated that no club outside the prem would even consider paying that for lielanna, who after his move told us he had been dreaming of playing for them since we played them there early last season, a captain dreaming of playing for another club through the vast majority of the season, he simply had to go.
we then have dejan apparently slapping a transfer request in before the world cup, then saying he wont come back to preseason and his heads already at liverhampton because he wants to play champs league and listen to their carp song every week, oh and he also has been thinking like that since early last season, so should we keep him? again liverhampton are going to pay more than double what we did a year ago.

look i enjoy debating with people who have different opinions, isnt that what footballs all about?

there are some that wont debate and instead just trow childish insults at me, fine their choice if they want to look stupid. i do ask questions when i debate, mainly because, as you say i have my opinion and if i just kept on posting it i would look as boring as some on here, and i like to hear answers as to what others would do in the same position.

i dont think its going to be as bad as some would like us to believe and im sure ronnie is going to bring in some good replacements to bolster our squad. to be honest i cant wait to get back to football and the real job of supporting the team.

i dont think theres that much of a problem with filling the ground. look at most of the games it wasnt full for last season and a lot of the time its because the away fans dont sell out. how many times do you see rows and rows of empty seats in there? i know we dont fill our areas but its only a few games that arent near full.
increasing the capacity would increase the away section so what do we do? there are around 6-7 maybe more games that are always near full and hard to get tickets to if not a season ticket holder.
i think if we went up to 40K that would be a good step up to see how we get on. remember when we left the dell some people said we wouldnt fill sms, some did, most knew there were fans that gave up trying to go there and relished the chance of getting tickets.
will we fill 40K well we wont know unless we try, but as ive said before, if you make the area more fan friendly with areas to hang out, bars, cafes , kids technology in sport area, museum etc and make more of a day of it more people might go.

Costa my old son, no answer to my reply to your question on possitives??[/p][/quote]i dont think theres that much of a problem with filling the ground. look at most of the games it wasnt full for last season and a lot of the time its because the away fans dont sell out. how many times do you see rows and rows of empty seats in there? i know we dont fill our areas but its only a few games that arent near full. increasing the capacity would increase the away section so what do we do? there are around 6-7 maybe more games that are always near full and hard to get tickets to if not a season ticket holder. i think if we went up to 40K that would be a good step up to see how we get on. remember when we left the dell some people said we wouldnt fill sms, some did, most knew there were fans that gave up trying to go there and relished the chance of getting tickets. will we fill 40K well we wont know unless we try, but as ive said before, if you make the area more fan friendly with areas to hang out, bars, cafes , kids technology in sport area, museum etc and make more of a day of it more people might go. de Heiligen paard 101

Happy Clappers, I am thinking that we should now go on the offensive, I am now of the opinion that the neggies on here are part of the problem, not part of the solution. I see them "blaming" the Board and the owner for our woes, they have as yet to say exactly how they could have prevented the rape and pillage of our Club? All I see is a bunch of whimpering, peevish, wimps, feeling sorry themselves but just full of hot air, misguided negative opinions and no solutions.
The fact that we were being successful and rapidly becoming a threat to the top Clubs seems to have triggered a concerted and intentional attack upon everything we had done. It started with newspapers stirring up with rumours that undermined just about everything that was good about what we did. Players minds have been poisoned by thoughts of mega bucks, No one can convince me it wasn't done by foul methods. It also coincided with a time when our Chairman decided to split for whatever reason. Our prime mover had gone and left a big gap in ambition. We had a Manager who for a while that we believed to be honourable, but he was only feathering his own nest.
The changes at the top have been enforced to ensure that we didn't collapse again, now we have a new leadership that will need to learn and change things so that we have a future to look forward to.
The departure of so many players has made me as angry as any of you neggies or happy clappers, the emotions are the same, but the vision is different. It is time for the Phoenix to rise from the flames, but it will need 100% support, the neggies will have to swallow some of their misguided pride and bite the bullet and get behind what we have got, for the time being it is all that we have got.
If by the close of the Transfer Window in September we haven't rebuilt with some notable imports, and results are not going our way, that will be the last straw, but I cannot envisage things being allowed to get that bad. It will only need a few decent signings to come and gel to form a basis of a revival.
I ask you all to keep the faith and support the Club, you could make the difference if you can restore the belief, the choice is yours, but it is very limited. Too much negativity could kill the Club, do you want to be a part of that?

Which bit didn't you understand?

You don't get it do you ? For all the posters on these threads who contribute a wide variety of wit and wisdom there are some who want monosyllabic comment ad the chance to grunt or cheer. Watching one string puppets jump up and down always makes me laugh though.

Try the weather forecast, its less taxing.

Osprey makes a number of good points, and I'm a Saint until I die. Loosely speaking I'm usually a Happy Clapper and proud of it. Now and then I diversify just get a reaction and now and then I'm just mischevious. But overall this current situation has me baffled.

I have noted that in all of the posts in recent weeks it is diificult to distinguish between the "Negative thinkers" and the "just worried". We bring in a supposed top manager and he makes some intial signings, then all is quiet as the babies flood down the pipes with the bathwater ....

Astonishing !

I really don't know what the heck is going on. Are we victims of greed and schemig agents? Are we for sale? Are we simply out of control ? Are we suffering death by a thousand cuts? .. or is there , somewhere under all this, some strategy inching forward unseen?

Who knows?

... and somehwre offshore, a Billionaire finishes his breakfast and turns to the sports pages in his newspaper ........ "heh heh heh .. he chuckles, they still don't see whats happening . soon, be patient ... soon they will know my name "

Weather forecasts are often wrong though, I have often missed events because I was negative and believed them, only to find the event went ahead in perfect conditions, while I was sat at this keyboard trolling out more of my rubbish, as there was not much else to do.

Indeed Osprey, indeed. The things we do to while away the time... and we do indeed love to troll out reams of complete tripe, mainly because we can .. and then again because sometimes its fun and like shooting fish in a barrel.

;-)
What is the weather like down in Southampton today, it was cloudy but sunny when I left at 6.30 ... It's cloudy up here in London today, but still very warm.. my train trip home will probably be affected by the "wrong type of sunshine".. overheated signals or rail drivers who pulled a sicky because its hot. and maybe .. just maybe .. I'll get past no 103 on Candycrush saga... another addiction I must crush before I retire.

All the best.

btw Osprey .. my earlier post at 9.16am wasnt a reply to your post, it merely followed it. The "quote" function isnt working on my PC ... I was referring to an earlier insult from some illiterate with an IQ three below his shoe size ... if you thought it was aimed at you then my apologies.

Possiblly a slightly lower IQ than you - but, my god, you are one boring individual!
