Southampton hoping Celtic's reinstatement to the Champions League will not derail their move for goalkeeper Fraser Forster

Saints will hope that their move for Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster is not impacted by the Scottish club's reinstatement to the Champions League.

Celtic were handed a reprieve after Legia Warsaw were punished for fielding an ineligible player in their 6-1 aggregate win over the Hoops in the third qualifying round.

Bartosz Bereszynski, who came on as an 86th-minute substitute in the Polish side's 2-0 second leg victory at Murrayfield on Wednesday, was suspended following a red card for violent conduct in last season's Europa League.

Hours before the draw for the next round was to be made, UEFA announced that Celtic had been awarded a 3-0 win in the second leg, and therefore qualified on away goals after a 4-4 aggregate result.

Celtic will now face Slovenian champions Maribor in the Champions League play-off round for a place in the lucrative group stages, although Legia have said they will challenge the decision.

Saints may be watching with interest, as they try to finalise a deal for the Bhoys' England international goalkeeper, Fraser Forster.

The club are attempting to complete a transfer for the 26-year-old, ahead of the start of the Premier League season.

Back in July there was a story Saints wanted Marshall and bid £8 million against Cardiff's £15 million valuation. So we don't offer enough for one and Warsaw mess up our plans for another.

The incoming tally is still worrying and, honestly, disappointing. All we can do is hang in there.

WTF - Firstly how on earth could Warsaw think they could get away with it and they were so superior they could've brought on a corner flag and put it in that position.
Secondly as Balotelli would say "Why is it always us". There is a gypsy curse somewhere.
I really thought we would have him before the weekend and their CB too. Being a Saints follower has never been dull but the roller coaster this summer has been hard to bear.
I understand John Ruddy is still open to offers and is just as good a keeper. Can't afford Cech so it's back to the drawing board maybe.
That young Dutch keeper looked the part in the WC as did Ochoa he was avail on a free - wonder if he's been snapped up. Go back and snap up this Rojo. Forster could've been a great signing for the next ten years if we suited each other. The cat gets kicked the moment it shows its face today!!!!

The pre season has yielded good positive results against xtremely lowely opposition.

The club need to be clear and honest with th fans - it has been a LONG TIME since we actually eard something real from the executives.

The Pelle, Tadic, Bertrand & Taider signings are all fine and well but we needed a new centre half long before Lovscum left..... NOW WE REALLY NEED A COUPLE OF CENTRE HALFS!!...
In addition, we need atleast one of our front lin to carry a premer league ready big game mentality - w cannotleave it to chance that Pelle & Tadic will automatically deliver upon first asking.

Considering the club were 'ovewhelmed' by 'top class' players wanting to join them at the start of the summer - wre are they now?...

There is a straight forward rule and that if a team fields an illegible player the opposing team gets a 3-0 walkover. I agree the circumstances are unfair but they can't mess with the written laws of the game.

1. We may still get Fraser Forster (very soon) despite this news but we will probably have to go to Celtic's full valuation.

2. Same goes for Virgil van Dijk, assuming RonKo really wants him.

3. From the commentary I listened to, both players had pretty good games compared to Celtic's midfield and central defence. It was their team that let them down. So, probably cannot read very much into those performances - they are still quality players.

We seem to be working very hard on other transfer deals and going through the bid/rejection/re-bid phases on several right now, for example Marcus Rojo who I believe we will probably agree a deal on within the next 24 hours or so. They are playing hardball just like we did.

I still hope we get Ron Vlaar. The media reports that his agent is steering him clear of Saints was almost certainly the agent's attempt to generate more interest and higher bids. Does look like Villa will sell him and we will need to beat off the EPL competition which may or may not include ManU.

Here's the position re: Rojo - another complex situation but looks like the 3 way negotiations could still be resolved with us signing him:

"Even Southampton supporters must be able to feel a shred of sympathy for Sporting Lisbon over Marcos Rojo. The Portuguese club only own 25% of the player after ending up in a very one-sided deal with third party investors Doyen Sports.

Portuguese newspaper O Jogo said on Thursday that a decision would be made that day on whether to accept Southampton's latest bid for the player of €17m. Sporting had been minded not. It's not really worth it for them to part with one of their best players and then receive just over €4m for him, they'd perhaps be better off having him for another season and getting nothing in the end, especially if Rojo can help them win a domestic title and progress in European competition.

A decision wasn't made on Thursday and that's largely because Doyen themselves have got involved, explain O Jogo. The situation is still under discussion with Doyen holding back any outright refusal from Sporting to Southampton.

Sporting president Bruno de Carvalho confirmed on Thursday that bids had been received for Rojo but he didn't elaborate any further, he's probably not able to at this stage. Southampton have even asked for staged payment, which Sporting are fully against. €4m in one payment is a disappointment, in several it becomes farcical from their perspective.

Rojo has a buyout clause of €30m and the decision could come down to whether Doyen believe they can get that in the future or whether they're pressuring Sporting to sell for €17m now".

Enjoy the game tomorrow everyone, after all that is what it’s really all about.

As many have been saying we need cb signings because at the present we have a very fragile central defence .Again in attack we have a fragile forward line.We sold the core of last seasons team and haven't replayed all of then. I get the feeling our new Goalkeeping coach Dave Watson is pushing for the Fraser Forster transfer.

Fraser Forster is a good goalkeeper in a bad league and why Celtic value him at £9m f'k knows. He started off at Newcastle United and had brief loan spells with Stockport County and Bristol Rovers. He then spent a successful season on loan at Norwich City. Forster then joined Celtic where he was on loan for two seasons before Celtic payed £2.2m.

Could someone tell Dave Watson that Artur Boruc is a better Goalkeeper than Forster. Going by some of the Celtic fans on their forums they prefer Boruc and would trade Forster plus cash for Boruc all day long.

Celtic will now hold out until the next round of the Champions League so our two targets may not be available.
Boruc is a good GK so it is not a priority position.
Replacing Lovren is, as is a top Striker better than Pelle & J-Rod.

With agents and players being put off because of the departures and lack of arrivals, just highlights why the board made a mistake in selling before they started buying. Also replacing Morgan with Jordy Classie now appears urgent to arrest further uncertainty.

RonKo must realise how weak the central defense and strike force is.

I am really bored of building up hope that we will actally rebuild our squad to a premier league competitive state before the end of he season.

Why are we not going and getting any of the following:

Micah Richards @ CB
Ron Vlaar @ CB
Van Dyjke @ CB
Forster @ GK
Sinclair @ RW
Nathan Dyer @ RW
Nathan Redmod @ RW

Right now I would settle for Lee Trundle, Sol Campbell & a bag of chips!!

Quite simply we don't have the cash for many of the rumoured players. Also a lot of players will be unsure about joining saints due to the shambles of the board actions or lack of action! and wages!.
As many have been saying we need cb signings because at the present we have a very fragile central defence .Again in attack we have a fragile forward line.We sold the core of last seasons team and haven't replayed all of then. Indeed we needed squad strengthening last season to maintain our status in the premiership.Fans can only look on in dismay, the eternal optimists will say different, but the stark facts are that we have a struggle on our hands to maintain our premiership holding.I hope we don't take a beating from the top clubs, but its difficult to see how we will keep the goals out.
We don,t immediately need 2 centre backs.Fonte is fine with quality backup.Everyone seems to be going on about the late Dean Richards being our best centre back but for me it was the Michael Svensson Claus Lundekvam partnership which was the best Saints pairing in my lifetime.Jose will be fine alongside a quality centre back.
