Saints could seal deal for Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster this weekend

SAINTS could land Celtic and England goalkeeper Fraser Forster this weekend for a fee of up to £10m.

The Scottish champions have allowed the 26 year old to talk to Saints despite being given a Champions League reprieve last night after opponents Legia Warsaw were found to have fielded an ineligible player.

It is understood Forster has travelled to Southampton for a medical after agreeing personal terms.

Forster’s eye-catching performances for Celtic in the Champions League last season impressed England boss Roy Hodgson who included him in his squad for the World Cup in Brazil, although he did not play.

He will be the fifth signing Saints have made this summer after deals for Dusan Tadic, Graziano Pelle and season-long loans for Ryan Bertrand and Saphir Taider.

But it comes after Southampton decided to sell cash-in on several first team players including former captain Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Rickie Lambert, Dejan Lovren and Callum Chambers for a combined total of £92m. Dani Osvaldo has also left the club on loan.

Yesterday Jose Fonte announced he had signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2017.

I think Pelle is a good buy but I agree we need a new striker and centre back (or two) If one of them could cover right back it would be good. Yoshida covering right back is not pretty.

Landing Forster is the most important though as it cost us major points when Boruc was out last season. There was a point where Gazza had a 100% shot to goal ration if remember correctly!

Good signing. Top keeper and a few years ahead of him still unlike Artur. It's time to let a couple go now as with the FFP restriction on wages why have five keepers? Artur and Fraser to battle it for number 1 with Cody Cropper the long term future and current stand in incase of double injury.

Bless them bothe because they WANT to do their best however Gazza and Hooiveld probably cost us 9 points on their own last year….notwithstand
ing it is not their fault that 60%+ possession and chance after chance were missed which would have made their errors less unfortunate.

Clinical finishing is still our achilles heel, if you could have the choice of us converting a reasonable percentage or the defense tightened I would plumb for the former because it will win us more games and at least be interesting to watch….heaven forbid we become a reincarnation of the one nil to the arsenal style.

Another Portuguese newspaper, Record, cover the rejection story too, but they say the player was also against the move. It's explained that Southampton failed to 'seduce' Rojo enough for him to want to leave Sporting.

We're not going to sign a striker who will score 25 goals a season--Suarez was the only player who managed that last season (in the PL). But I agree we should aim to get 2 defenders (at least one must be a CB) and a striker/forward.

I've watched Forster a few times in the CL, I remember one particular match against Barcelona and the thing that strikes me is how big he makes himself look in front of goal--he's very good in one-on-one situations. My only question is who would be no 1 keeper? When you take away the odd stupid mistake (which only happens two or three times a season), I think Boruc and Forster are about as good as each-other.

If we are to finish higher than those then our position will be at least 5th or possibly higher.

I found this article on the Metro website, it certainly fills me with optimism for the future.

Does Forster swoop show Saints were not 'asset stripping'?
Southampton are on the verge of signing Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster (Picture: Getty Images)
In two of my previous blog posts I discussed what might be going on at St. Mary’s following the exodus of first team players and explored the possibility that either the club was just a victim of egos and player power or if the board were actively looking to ‘cash in’.

But, with the club in the verge of signing goalkeeper Fraser Forster for a fee of around £10million from Celtic and Ronald Koeman confirming interest in both Romanian defender Florin Gardos, who plays for Steaua Bucharest, and Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon is this the evidence we need that the club was never ‘asset stripping’?

The pursuit of Rojo in particular would certainly dispel any suggestion that the club no longer had any ambition. The predominantly central defender for his club, who shone at the World Cup at left-back for Argentina (including starting in the final), has a stock that has never been so high. The price will certainly be high, perhaps even a record by Saints standard, should the club get though the hoops that are the player’s dual ownership.

With Graziano Pelle and Dusan Tadic both coming in at significant fees, Forster to follow and perhaps a transfer record in Rojo, are people really in a position to suggest that the board is looking to make a lot of money and run?

Of course, the club is going to be in a much better shape financially than it was last season, but that is no bad thing, and if Saints can replace the players that have gone at half the cost, while remaining the competitive nature of the first team, many fans will owe this board a big apology.

Mistakes have been made, of that I have no doubt, and I spoke of naivety when I first examined the events of the summer, but clearly they are trying to rectify that.

It is never ‘easy’ supporting Southampton Football Club, what would be the fun in that? But this season could shape up to be a lot better than we ever could have hoped a month.

Interesting piece. Although you need to recognise that that primary purpose of the Metro is to mop up spilled coffee from commuter train tables and its general standard of journalism and contribution makes the DE look like a pre-tabloid copy of The Times.

If Forster signs that is a big bit of the jigsaw in place. Priority then surely must be at least one CB to partner Fonte (Clasie?) and a shooter up front to convert all the chances we keep making a balls-up of.
Agreed, Pelle is a class act but I don't think he will get anywhere near even 20 this season.

Trouble is, everyone wants one of those strikers. They are in short supply and you have to pay big money for them, and judging by this transfer window I would say it's unlikely Saints are going to do that.

Agreed, Pelle is a class act but I don't think he will get anywhere near even 20 this season. Trouble is, everyone wants one of those strikers. They are in short supply and you have to pay big money for them, and judging by this transfer window I would say it's unlikely Saints are going to do that. Jan28th1984

Well, a tweet has said Artur has put his house on the market, what it didn't say was whether he was leaving or has bought a better one, you chose.

If Clasie was to partner Fonte, we'd be in serious trouble... at 5'6" I think he just might be a little on the small side to play center half.

Latest on Rojo
We've been covering the situation regarding Marcos Rojo and Southampton all week. Portuguese newspaper O Jogo had stated that a decision on Southampton's latest €17m bid would be made on Thursday but that was postponed whilst third party investors Doyen Sports had a think. Doyen own 75% of Rojo's rights and they wanted longer to think whether €17m was a big enough offfer, or whether they'd be better off holding out for more... either this summer or in a future transfer window.

O Jogo report on Saturday that a decision has been made, and that's to reject the €17m offered by Southampton. It's the second Rojo bid from Southampton that has been turned down, with their initial €12m being rejected out of hand earlier on in the week.

Should Southampton now want to sign Rojo, they'll have to pay €20m. Even at that price, Sporting would have been prepared to keep the player for longer, because they'd still only receive €5m, but O Jogo say a bid of €20m will make the transfer happen.

The €20m which Sporting and Doyen require converts to £16m, it may be considered a fairer price for the 24 year old. Rojo is an Argentina international and started the World Cup final for them, he's been linked to some of Europe's top clubs so the initial €12m (£9.6m) looked optimistic to say the least and Southampton are finding out that, just like they, some clubs want top fees for top players.

Another Portuguese newspaper, Record, cover the rejection story too, but they say the player was also against the move. It's explained that Southampton failed to 'seduce' Rojo enough for him to want to leave Sporting.

Well, a tweet has said Artur has put his house on the market, what it didn't say was whether he was leaving or has bought a better one, you chose.
I think he is getting a camper van so he can live at the training ground and take on extra training now he's got some true competition.
Hope he doesn't go although he doesn't seem like the sort of player to play second fiddle, even though that's how he came in originally.

Looking back on the statement last week I think we have two of them - Taider and Forster - and I'm guessing the third was Rojo but after huffing and puffing they've rejected our second bid which maybe we thought they'd accept. Depends if we prepared to up it again or not, hopefully we'll do a 20m euro take it or leave it final offer.

As I said a couple of days ago there was never any chance of Rojo joining us. We have witnessed the tangible negatives from this summer by way of players leaving, but it has also made the pool of players likely to join us in the future smaller.

But thankfully we have a manager who brings quite a reputation to the table. If we can bring some more talent in and Ron gets the lads playing a system which lends itself to the Premiership, happy days!!!

Stop being a c0ck - you know it's just the latest bid rejected. 20million Euro will buy Rojo, ie £16m - a fair price I reckon for a 24 year old Argentine international with the skill and versatility to cover CB and LB.

But then I'm not buying the players, am I?
I hope we up the bid to 20 million euros but if that's not enough best look elsewhere.
No need to be abusive, not as you say, the message was separate to any turned down offers, it clearly said that he had declined a move and was quoted from a report in a Portuguese newspaper "Record"?

Past tense of remind thus suggesting we do remember thus don't need reminding over and over again as it's been very well documented in all forms of media from the start.
We ( except you by the looks of it) don't need reminding every time a new player is on his way.

Support the Saints, not so easy right now, but that would be glory hunting if it was easy and everyone would support us.

Things dont look too good for Targett, ive never seen Byram

Southampton have had a bid rejected for Leeds United star, Sam Byram, while Sunderland are also interest in the defender, according to a journalist at the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Byram, 20, has emerged as the next big star at Elland Road and both the Saints and Sunderland are keen to bring him to the Premier League and heap further misery on Leeds, who have sold their star striker Ross McCormack this summer.

It is believed that Southampton’s rejected offer was around the £4.5 million mark but Leeds United would like to keep hold of him a little longer to get some use out of him before a bigger side plucks him from the Championship.

Three key Leeds United players for the Championship season ahead

Byram is rated as one of the highest-rated youngsters outside the top flight and Leeds chairman Massimo Cellino wants to keep him, although he may find it difficult should Byram push for the move.

Leeds may not have any other choice than to sell Byram and cash in on the young star.

Agreed.

The Players leaving will frighten a lot of players off but I agree that Ron's reputation and class - particularly with more mainstream European players will more than offset the departures.

If we can get into a reasonably safe position when the transfer window next opens, the Agents and their Boys will be queing up to be let in.

We have witnessed the tangible negatives from this summer by way of players leaving, but it has also made the pool of players likely to join us in the future smaller. But thankfully we have a manager who brings quite a reputation to the table. If we can bring some more talent in and Ron gets the lads playing a system which lends itself to the Premiership, happy days!!![/p]
Yes,personally,I don't see any cause for alarm quite just yet,but the proof will be in the pudding as they say.[/p]
I'm with you on that. But we do need to strengthen and quick. The CB position is a massive worry . If we can give Ron a good set of players I believe he will do a really good job and we can look forward to some good times. I just can't figure out why things are taking so long on the recruitment front.[/p]
Agreed. The Players leaving will frighten a lot of players off but I agree that Ron's reputation and class - particularly with more mainstream European players will more than offset the departures. If we can get into a reasonably safe position when the transfer window next opens, the Agents and their Boys will be queing up to be let in. Graham, North of Watford

Is Sam Byram not a right back?

I don't care what position we finish in as long as we finish above Liverpool and Spuds!
Top four then.
