Dejan Lovren scores on Liverpool debut as Reds warm up for Saints by thrashing Dortmund at Anfield

DEJAN Lovren scored after only 14 minutes of his Liverpool debut as the Reds warmed up for the Premier League opener against Saints with a 4-0 caning of Borussia Dortmund at Anfield this afternoon.

Lovren, recently signed for £20m from Saints, headed his new club's second goal at the same end in which he scored Saints' winner at the ground last September.

Liverpool went ahead early on through Daniel Sturridge, with Philip Coutinho and Jordan Henderson completing a comfortable success.

Though Adam Lallana is out injured, Liverpool brought on another ex-Saints favourite, Rickie Lambert, for his Anfield debut as a late sub.

Saints boss Ronald Koeman was among the crowd.

We should care,as the last thing we want after the turmoil of the last few weeks is a Liverpool team in full flow on the opening game. With our fragile defence it would be a tough act to keep them out.

Maybe scouting out which Liverpool players we want to buy .... or more likely, having a look at the opposition to help his plans on how to play against them. That was one of MoPo's weaknesses - he never considered the oppposition, just focussed on the way we played. That's great in principle, and I always prefer the "we're gonna score one more than you" approach to football, which was why Chris Nichol was my favourite Saints manager, but many times teams changed their way of playing during the match and we had no answer to them, so having some ideas about the opposition and having some plans for dealing with their strengths is, I feel, a good idea.

I'm very much not looking forward to the Liverpool game, although I hope to be pleasantly surprised. Desperately need a new CB, Hoovield is a lower mid table player at best and I'm still not convinced by yoshida, too many errors and pretty sure we only signed him for the Asian market. However even if we do get one next week they won't be starting against the scousers as there's not enough time to gel. Think with Sturridge at the helm and at anfield first game we'd do well to only conceded one goal.

Board have left it far too late to sign a CB, still think haggling over 1,2 mill is ridiculous considering we've had 90£m+ in sales.

Overall I think well do alright this season, between 10-12?

Main strength last season was team spirit and main weakness was our strength in depth, the former is definitely worse and the latter is still the case.

Will judge on September the 1st but severely doubt well get anything g against Lpool which will be gutting..

Anyway, onwards and upwards. COYR

Some people (not Tony) have subscribed to the view that all the departures are really carp. A couple of weeks back when the Chambers deal was done I asked everyone to clarify their views on Morgan. Be interesting to see who changes and who has the honesty to stick to their original view.

King Cnut was a legend of Southampton who tried to halt the waves. I don't expect instant success like some, but I do expect our players to respect the club, it's history and most of all it's fans. If they don't, then let them jog on.

Agree. RK is doing the right thing. Sizing up the Saints rejects and the rest of the Scouse outfit.

Hope someone tells him that Loverat goes down like a girl when he gets a kick in the shins. Job for Victor.

My main worry is our CB trio .every single one of them is Championship not Prem material. Fonte is the best of the 3 but absolutely needs a better player alongside him.

I see quite a few punters are predicting a tough season. Maybe but with Villa QPR WBA Leicester Burnley and Hull all being rubbish I,m not worried...much

Lovren is a great center half and this showed when he was not playing due to injury. He instilled confidence in those around him and will do a job for Liverpool. Remember he and the others cited ambition as their reason for going.
We had a ready made replacement in Callum Chambers... he will be an Arsenal and England center half in the near future, but he went because he has ambition as well.

We showed yesterday that we are very weak up front and at the back.

Any incoming players this week will not be ready to play against Liverpool because it is now too late to get them fit and blend them in in time.

Unfortunately our lack of quality at both ends means we would do well to do better than Dortmund did.

Hopefully a packed midfield will keep the score down. Sad that we don't appear to be continuing the High tempo pressing & passing game as that made it difficult for the opposition and was entertaining to watch.

Forget the first three games up to the end of the transfer window, any points gained will be a bonus. Les & the board have only 3 weeks left to get the 4 top quality players in, then we will see how strong we are.

Expect to see Morgan go, plus we will do well to convince J-Rod, Boruc, Cork & Cline to stay. Expect Hoover and Sharp will leave in next 10 days leaving the whole squad very short of players.

Les and the board will do well to convince any top quality players to join, so can see them wasting money on average ones, but may get a couple of good ones on loan.

We must improve the 11 on the pitch by bringing in better players than we have so far.

Can we give Les Reed some help, time is running out.

DE stop reporting on ex-players! It's as interesting as were did Beattie buy his groceries last week!!

It is clear you are looking to ignite fractions between Saints fans to create story lines as you have no other to fill your gaps on Southampton FC!

The way Lovern forced his exit was a total disgrace to Southampton FC, to the fans!! To football itself !! He has a big ego, and not because he has gone, personally I feel he wasn't all that! Again personally he created some good clean sheets early on, and people connected his fee to this oh so easily? In the latta part of the season he was found wanting, and in the World Cup from what I saw he was too easily turned inside out.

It is laughable that we brought Lovern for a 7 mil if I remember right, which Liverpool wanted to pay, to then sell him one year older for 20mil. If Koeman can buy a decent CB like the Dutch guy at Celtic, and we should pay over the odds if we can for him, then the laugh would be a lot bigger! This guy also got a lethal dead ball kick!

The point is DE the club is trying to move on, the players have gone for what ever reason and it looks like they have? Lovern will have so much to worry about Pelle than anything else, that I see either Tadic or Davies seeking one in a gap made! It is shameful that you keep tabs on ex players wearing foreign shirts! The only exception if you are in touch with anything DE is Lambert! Truly believed if we went onto a very successful season and ended higher up in the league. The only ex player who would genuinely feel sorry he is not in red and white stripes would be Lambert, and that he would be made up for Saints! It's a disgrace that Liverpool fans are already moaning about him!

"We showed yesterday that we are very weak up front and at the back. " We didn't score any goals, so we certainly didn't demonstrate much strength in attack. We only let in one own goal, with the main culprit being a midfielder, and allowed relatively few shots I believe, so it seems we didn't demonstrate much weakness in defence. I'm not quite sure how you reached you reached your conclusion.

I'm also amazed at how much you know about the future. Can you tell me where I can get a crystal ball like yours? Or, do you use Tarot cards?

Oh no! You've mentioned his name again. He's probably just returning home from the match and firing up his lap-top right now and is already preparing 500 posts and taunts at us to be listed at 15 minute intervals over the next 7 days. Can't wait to get back at him when we win 2-0 next Sunday (my score forecast is based on last season's 1-0 win and the fact that we'll be twice as determined to beat them after what they've done to us).

Increased page traffic = increased ad revenue = happy publisher. So, basically we're just playing into their hands. Good fun though, isn't it?

Maybe scouting out which Liverpool players we want to buy .... or more likely, having a look at the opposition to help his plans on how to play against them. That was one of MoPo's weaknesses - he never considered the oppposition, just focussed on the way we played. That's great in principle, and I always prefer the "we're gonna score one more than you" approach to football, which was why Chris Nichol was my favourite Saints manager, but many times teams changed their way of playing during the match and we had no answer to them, so having some ideas about the opposition and having some plans for dealing with their strengths is, I feel, a good idea.
One of MoPo's weaknesses? Tony you usually talk sense but that is total b*******s.
Are you in the ''he is a rubbish coach now he has left us '' camp?
Some people (not Tony) have subscribed to the view that all the departures are really carp. A couple of weeks back when the Chambers deal was done I asked everyone to clarify their views on Morgan. Be interesting to see who changes and who has the honesty to stick to their original view.
Gaz surely people are allowed to say that pochaliar had weaknesses without you accusing them of saying he was completely rubbish? even the best managers have weaknesses so people should say what they think they were! personally I think his main weakness was treating certain players a lot differently to others, some say he had his own `clique`. I actually think that concentrating on your own style and sticking to it no mater who we played was one of his main strengths!
I think you should stop criticising people for having a well thought out opinion, just because it differs from yours.

seed, I will say now that I think spider is one of, if not the, best central defenders in the league, and even his attitude wont change that, nor will I change my mind f he leaves.
I haven't said that luke or any of the others are bad players and I don't think I have said that the new players are better, though I obviously hope they are.
what I have done is question the characters of a couple of the leavers, and I think I have every right due to the attitude some have displayed. if they had behaved like luke or rickie, though luke wasn't an angel, I wouldn't have had to. I think the leaving statements from the club on the OS says everything about the way the players went about their moves. if spider goes, which I don't think he will, I will question his actions but wont question his abilities.
just a last thought on chambers, we had 2 international CB`s as managers and a goalkeeper recently and not one of them has thought of him, or played him, at CB. yet wenger thinks he knows better, we will have to see as the season unfolds whether he was right or not.

Can someone please explain why players are so reluctant to ask for a transfer and instead try and force a move.
I am after facts not supposition.
I would genuinely like to know why clubs don't keep players unless they ask for a move in writing.

Copied and Paste from Google - Alexander Francis

When a player is sold by their club, without the player handing in a transfer request, the player is entitled to a percentage of the transfer fee, usually between 5-15%, as it is the players skills/abilities that are enabling the selling club to profit. This is commonly referred to as a "loyalty bonus" and consists of a payment against the time left on the contract, his wages, image rights and any outstanding bonuses the player is due for the remainder of the contract as well as his transfer cut. (Hence why clubs are much keener to sell a player with 2 years left on their contract, than they are with a player with 3 or 4 years. They have to pay the departing player less of a bonus, & players with 2 years on their contracts, as opposed to 3 or 4, tend to generate smaller transfer fees, so again, the player gets less)

Also, the player has a large say in where he will or will not go. "I'm happy, I want to stay, so if i'm leaving, i'm only going to X, Y or Z." They also depart a hero rather than a villain which to today's 21st century celebrity, image conscious footballers is a big deal. The ire of the fans turns on the club for "selling our best player"

HOWEVER.........if a transfer request is submitted by the player, everything changes.

If a transfer request is submitted, the loyalty bonus becomes null and void, as the player's request is the most flagrant act of disloyalty. The bonuses, wages, % of the transfer fee and all the other financial obligations due from the club are in essence, waived. The player's best hope is of recouping some of that money back from the buying club in the form of a signing on fee. The player also becomes a pariah at the club. The fans will never forgive him, every time he returns he is greeted by a torrent of abuse. He will receive plenty of abuse outside the confines of the pitch via social media. He will be labelled as greedy, disloyal, a mercenary etc, which although sounds innocuous, mud sticks in the football world. He will not have the same freedom of choice like his team mate who is sold without handing in a transfer request, as the request is the resort of someone who does not want to be at the club for a moment longer than he has to and will take the first decent offer thrown his way. If not, his position weakens further.

I think the leaving statements from the club on the OS says everything about the way the players went about their moves. if spider goes, which I don't think he will, I will question his actions but wont question his abilities. just a last thought on chambers, we had 2 international CB`s as managers and a goalkeeper recently and not one of them has thought of him, or played him, at CB. yet wenger thinks he knows better, we will have to see as the season unfolds whether he was right or not.[/p][/quote]Well Wenger put him straight into the Charity Shield, full 90 mins, playing at CB for the first time in his professional career, and he did very well. Dejan Lovren enjoys debut to savour as Liverpool enjoy perfect warm-up for Southampton opener .

Croatian defender delighted with his goalscoring start in pre-season friendly win over Borussia Dortmund

Dejan Lovren admitted it was a debut to savour after he scored in Liverpool’s 4-0 rout of Borussia Dortmund at Anfield.
The Croatian centre-back produced an accomplished display following his £20million move from Southampton.
Lovren nodded home the Reds’ second goal as Brendan Rodgers’ side enjoyed the perfect warm up for next Sunday’s opening Premier League clash with Saints.
“It was an amazing game and we played really well,” Lovren said. "
“It’s a good start for me here. I haven’t been with the team for long, just two days, but I’m feeling like I’ve been here for a month already.
“The coach here has a similar style to what I was used to at Southampton so it’s easier to adapt here compared to going somewhere else. I’m really glad about that.
“Dortmund are always there in the Champions League each year. They are always first or second in the German League.
“They are a quality team but we showed our qualities and our style of football. We score four goals and keep a clean sheet was amazing for us.
Dejan Lovren celebrates his goal
“We have a week now to prepare for the Southampton game. We will have time to get to know each other better but I already feel settled here.
“I said from the start we want to take the title. We have the qualities and we have a team working well together.”
Goals from Daniel Sturridge, Lovren, Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson ensured that Liverpool signed off their pre-season schedule on a glorious high.
There was also an impressive Liverpool debut from Javier Manquillo following his loan move from Atletico Madrid.
The young Spanish right-back received a warm ovation when he was substituted late on.
“Both Dejan and Javier haven’t had much time with the squad but we saw today how good they are,” said Henderson, who completed the scoring.
“I thought the two of them were outstanding. It was a really pleasing day for both of them.
“As a team we played very well throughout the game. It was a good way to finish pre-season off.
“Everyone is happy and hopefully we can continue that against Southampton.
“All our games this pre-season have been against top opposition. We’ve had a good pre-season and now we have to be ready for the real test next week.”

Chris Nicholl...you mean the bloke who played our main goal scoring and creative threat Dave Armstrong at full back because he couldn't handle Mark Dennis?
(Subtle change of subject -it helps to have such a stellar back catalogue upon which which to call -reminds me of the proper players that we used to have, oh, and Mr Nicholl was a better central defender than you know who )

Thanks for that, but why do clubs still let players under contract go even without a transfer request?
I know they probably don't want to keep unsettled players, but if they are under contract hold them to it.
I wish clubs would make a stand against this sort of thing.

I would tell wanyama to smash him in the first minute.i would also tell fonte to go elbows out with lambert in the first aerial battle.
So we would be down to nine men after five minutes.

Nice one.
