I think Saints and teams like stoke, palace, and leicester will be running to stand still. I know for a fact stoke always start the season with the phrase 'hope to push on' but like the teams mentioned a nice mid-table pay-out is more than enough to keep the suits happy. but i have a sneaky feeling saints could reach 6th.

Spot on Norg , anything ideally that doesn't involve a relegation fight would be top draw .......... The club has had to rebuild off the pitch as well as on so it will be a tough start ..................

Interesting signings that could do better than many expect. The press will be waiting for us to fail but will round on the 'Big' lazy clubs if we don't especially if all the Saints new England Stars ! are sat on a bench ..............

Realistically cannot see a top 6 finish, although the thought would be nice. At same time think this squad is far too strong to even consider relegation so upper mid table 8th to 10th will be great.
I wonder how many of our ex-players will really make it with their new clubs. Some will undoubtedly but think that at least 2 will fail miserably while Lambert will become a bench-warmer. COYR

These views are just a gut feeling and this sort of poll should wait until Saints have played at least 6 games or so.

Some good signings, but major departures, mean that the side is starting from an unknown base. Are the signings any good, will they blend quickly into a strong footballing side and gain that all important confidence?

It will help a lot if several other teams have a nightmare start giving us a good opportunity.

At this stage we might just as well have a poll asking whether it will rain on Bonfire night. The fact is we do not know.

News that we are still after a top CB with Phillip Wollscheid rumored if we can't get Ron Vlaar, then we are talking if we get one of those two in next ten days.

Then would feel confident about our defence and gives RonKo the option of playing 3-5-2.

Whilst Shane Long is a good signing I would still like a more Prolific Goalscorer signed, even an older one like Samuel E'oto or loanee.

Add a top fast winger and a couple of good young prospects like Byram and we are then looking like a side that has ambitions for the top six.

Come on Les, keep going only two more weeks, you are finally getting there !

9th but only if Pardew gets the toon firing. I note the Daily Mail's Cork to Palace article seems to be missing. Seriously that paper is a United Fanzine and seems to want to destabilise our great club. I didn't join the frenzied argument but I am disappointed the Echo didn't bother to put a call in to Saints to verify the story that originated in the Mail.

Bertrand looks a steady left back, Taider could be the surprise package of the premier this season. Gordas is apparently injured so unlikely to be around for the first three or four games. Is Forster better than Buroc? Not convinced on that, can understand how Buroc feels. Tadic faces a stiff examination at this level but may show he has some of Lallana's skill. Pelle could not hit the net in any of the friendlies from Swindon on except his own. Shane will be an okay addition nothing exceptional.
Of course these players have to have time to gel and as a unit everything may come together. We probably have around 40 mil in the kitty depends on how much the players wages are. It was very subtly put in by Kruger that all the money from outgoing transfers is given to the manager for transfers and their wages.
I am not convinced that there is anything in our signings that would convince Morgan of our ambition, that we have a better or even as good a side as last season.
I feel mildly confident we will survive to become a mid table club and i guess that is success for this season, after all the upset which is still hitting the club.
Spending 10 mil on a player these days is nothing when the top 7 spend 20-30-40 mil.
I think both Saints and Lallana will regret his move, Lambert has gone for his swan song. Shaw and Chambers will be okay though will probably warm a bench for a year or two. Which is an indictment in itself because they were not prepared to give us another couple of seasons and have a chance of regular football. To see what could be achieved. Lovren will do well, self motivated and aggressive.
You get the feeling between the lines that the board felt the only way forward was to sell and rebuild and they allowed certain players to leave to achieve that.
We still need another three players to give depth of squad. We need to keep Cork, whilst I feel more and more Morgan is a lost cause.
I think we will struggle at Anfield and go down about 3-1 but in the coming weeks improve.
I would love us to hit the top 6 and I would be made up to finish above Spurs. That is what we should of been looking at this season until everything blew up in the air. If Rodriguez comes back as good as he was and stays beyond January, if Morgan loses his pout stays and digs in, we can get into the top 10. They are very big ifs. We have bought in squad players, now we need a couple of defining signings to tell us without doubt the ambition is there. Players whose name will be first on the team sheet without question or doubt.
At the moment around 12th for me as it stands.

If we an finish above Spurs and the judas, and beat Liverpool that will be the icing on the cake.

Still loads of money in the kitty. Maybe another top CB, a tricky flying wide man who can cross a good ball and score a few as well and a cheap cover for Clyne at RB. We should then fiinsh just above Thievingskiverpool and a good few places above the,by then, managerless hapless, Spudhampton. I think Vlaar will probably end up at Manure but Wollscheid looks ok too and probably cheaper . Would be nice to keep a bit in the kitty for January but we still havn't spent anywhere near all we have received and there must be a transfer kitty available in addition to that. Was watching SKY last evening and they were showing how much clubs have spent. The likes of Burnley, Leicester, WBA and now especially Palace simply arn't in our league anymore' If Big Ron can get these new signings integrated quickly we could do very well.

I think it will take a few weeks to settle but after that i think we will be a major force with this squad. Im going to slap a fiver on us beating Liverpool .. whoa.. I live close to the edge me !! and Im slapping another tenner on us finishing top ten. Look at our team - it makes perfect sense !!

The gaps left by the greedy have been filled. Now the big thing for Ron is to create a true team spirit in thse boys! Given that people are kicking us before we even kick a ball the underdog spirit will prevail and by the end of September ther wont be ateam in this league that will want to play us ... Will someone please note this and requote me at the end of Septemeber please because I will want to gloat... big time.

The neggies and the press are putting us in the bottom three before we've even sniffed the linament. That is simply foolish, they are complete plonkers and they will be reminded constantly about this as the season progresses.

So today is likely to be a bit boring... no doubt we will have an attack of statistics from somewhere, maybe MLT and Gordon Watson will give their views. (Why?) Maybe the blue ar$ed flies will buzz about a bit and no doubt we will get the usual mundane rants form the glass half empty brigade.

Am I a happy clapper? Who gives a ****, I'm just glad that money has been spent, it seems largely well spent and I have massive faith in the new boss. He has played a straight bat to questions so far, he knows what he's doing, he likes entertaining football and between him and the man Reed they have filled in the grave that the greedy dug.

It all depends on the start we have. If we can have a good start against the weaker opposition in the first 10-12 games, the players will develop confidence and spirit that will take us through a tough winter programme. For sure with the squad we have, we are better than 8-10 of the other teams, it just depends how quickly they settle into playing a new system with new players. 12th-14th would be comfortable and a good achievement in a rebuilding year, plus a couple of strong cup runs. The squad now looks pretty good, and could be stronger than last year if MS gets his 'head right'

10th for me after a slow start, especially the first four games, where if we get four points I will be happy. And win the FA Cup. Last season's attitude to the cup by the manager was a disgrace. Although in hindsight understandable.

I would like to see a 5 year plan from RK or KL, preferably KL. But I don't think we will. I always feel happier with a target to hit. I think if the squad and the supporters all have the same goals it helps to increase the points tally. We have spent circa £48M so far out of £92M, it will be interesting to see how much is left on September the first, and the percentage of experienced players in the squad versus inexperienced academy players.

It's all gone a little quiet on the Schneiderlin situation I wonder if he's resolved himself that he's not getting a move or is still pushing for a move and refusing to play ?
Would be great if he stays as he strengthens the mild field and is a great tackler. If he played on Sunday it will tell everyone that he is back on course and part of the team. If he doesn't play well we know were its heading!
The Judas at Spurs is being very coy on the subject hopefully the Saints board have told him to back off and to stop tapping the player up.

But no doubt it will take time for the newly assembled squad to settle in and I hope for the most part we can muster plenty of patience and keep the neggies at bay.

Just a rumour, but Saints are now linked with Alvaro Gonzalez of Lazio. If true, I can only imagine we only need another midfield defender to make up for either Cork or Schneiderlin as one would think we have enough players in this role already.

If your so sure that Southampton can finish above Liverpool in the PL , why don't you find a bookies that will take you on, they will probably give you odds of 1000/1 or higher.

You have to be realistic, Saints will reach possibly 7th at the very best but I very much doubt that they will rise above this level especially with a team like you have at present.

We are in a period of transition, very rarely does a team going through this have a good season, we have to bed in a new team and until things get settled we might struggle a bit.
But we will come through this and end up lower mid-table, which after what has happened this summer will be a great achievement.
Anything above this will be a huge bonus.
Obviously all in my humble opinion.

No, we are not your typical keyboard warrior club like Soton, we just happen to have what it takes to save our club, by buying it though, and then spending money on pitches, and facilities, and land purchase.

We turn up when needed, not in myriads on forums slagging off the board.

Personally I'd like to see us maybe bring in one more defender and a loanee striker, but I think we should be putting a fair amount of the money aside for the January and next summer windows.

Let's face it, this summer has made it hard to attract players, so isn't the idea time to buy, plus people realise we are loaded.

Keep some in the wallet, wait until we hopefully re-establish ourselves as a stable, progressive club and it will be easier to bring in the players we need.

Plus, Ron needs more time to properly access where he needs to strengthen and where he's comfortable - he can't possibly make that judgement until he's seen them in action for five or six Premier League games.

I think you're being pessimistic. I reckon we'll finish between 6 and 12, or maybe 13 if we're unlucky. At worst, I don't believe our new signings will be that much worse than those who have left. At best, I don't think they'll be quite good enough to get us into Europe, although that's what I hope.

If this happens I think it would be good business and then hold on to the rest of the money for Jan/next summer. I guess none of us knows how Jay will play when he is back but hopefully he'll return fully fit and pick up where he left off but if not we'd then have money to play with for another striker. Still not convinced by Shane Long but hope I am proved wrong. It would be great to see us prove the doubters wrong this season. I've been impressed with big ron and lets hope it's a positive season of transtion and that next summer the team stays together to push us onwards and upwards again...

This season is about rebuilding as others have suggested. If we do well we can then sell all our players again and do the same again. This way the board keep trousering loads a money and we happy fanys get mid table mediocrity as the stated ambition.

Well the hope will be finishing higher etc etc etc - but a hope is not a plan or a strategy.

Boy I am pessimistic - or just bored with the subject of money all the time and how much for him or him.

Know one knows where we will finish at this stage it's a complete new build - not a blend of new faces - Hopefully I will get some entertainments for my season ticket money - but it's hard to form a bond with the players these days - a successful season will see them sold - a bad one will see Les Reed blame RK for wasting the money - it's a circus but I'll sit and try and get excited

The short answer to all this is that no-one has the faintest idea whether this 'new' team will gel or not, and none of us really know the true capabilities of any of the new players either. One thing is for sure, we're going to have to play a hell of a lot better than the friendly last week just to stay in the league.

Anything above this will be a huge bonus.
Obviously all in my humble opinion.
A few random memories of mine to emphasise football ‘s unpredictability :
Man Utd changed their grey shirts at half time.
Benali once scored a goal (I was there).
Hurlock played 90 mins without a booking.
Mattie once chased back to help defend.
Further afield .....
Rickie took a penalty and didn’t score.
Leeds promotion back into the 1st Division in 1988-89 ended up finishing 4th.
The skunts got a commendable 13th in their first of many seasons back in the 4th Divison when most football fans around the country expected them to deservedly drop out of the Football League.

There’s been so much drama at our club and drama queens on here this off-season, won’t it be great to be finally back to doing what we all love doing ..... Watching and enjoying our team. COYR!

I somehow missed including my opening point, so here it is belatedly:

Of course you are right to be cautious Gaz and we don’t know our new level yet. Football is not always predictable and strange things can happen. After all we just finished one place below Man Utd. Who can say with any certainty in football what happens next?
We took on the big boys last season and made them think, Pochettinho has to be congratulated for that much at least. We have been ransacked and it’s depressing but in every crisis come opportunities.
