New Saints signing Florin Gardos will have to wait a few weeks for his debut, as he recovers from a hamstring injury, but Shane Long could make his first appearance for the club at Anfield tomorrow.

Long boosted Saints’ strike options this week, when he arrived in a £12.5m deal from Hull, and he is available to feature in the Premier League opener at Liverpool.

Romanian international centre-half Gardos, who also arrived on Thursday, in a £6m transfer from Steaua Bucharest, will not be involved, though.

“He is not in the team for this Sunday, because he had an injury four or five weeks ago, a hamstring one, and he’s still not on a 100 per cent physical level to play,” said Saints manager Ronald Koeman.

“He needs maybe two or three weeks more for training and to be ready for playing.”

Koeman was also delighted with the capture of Republic of Ireland international Shane Long.

“First of all, we are very happy that we signed Shane Long, because from the beginning of pre-season it was a target on our list of players to bring in,” he said.

“Shane Long is an important player of the team and we need that type of striker because we didn’t have that type of striker in our squad and we are very happy to sign him.”

Long has not had much time with his new teammates yet, but Koeman said he will make a final decision on what role he will play at Anfield once the squad have conducted their final training session today.

If he does feature, he will be one of a number of players making their competitive debut for Saints.

Fellow summer signings Dusan Tadic, Graziano Pelle, Ryan Bertrand, Saphir Taider and Fraser Forster are all expected to be part of the matchday squad.

Still think we need more CB cover we were short last season and still think we need a striker. So we spent around 48 mil what about the other 40mil that was supposed to be there the squad is still weak, there is not enough depth?

There should be something left of that war chest but remember that also covers wages/fees etc. He will have to put a little aside for the Xmas sticking plaster sales. If this lad is still a few weeks off being 100% we need another CB asap. Rambo thinks a winger (I'm guessing a right winger) is his priority and not a striker - though I agree with you - what do we know though?
Maybe there's a loan deal to be had on a striker somewhere to tide us over till JRod is firing on all cylinders again. Not sure we need to sign a FT striker though as by next season we will be having Rowe knocking on the door to step up. Interesting to see if Gallagher is on the bench tomorrow. Either way would like to see another striker join - There's an old pro by the name of Lambert up in Skiverpool who might not like sitting on the bench all season wonder if he'd like a few months down on the south coast. If Welbeck doesn't get sold he's not flavour of the month at Utd .......... just saying.

Not sure he will start as I think RonKo will pack the midfield in order to protect our weak defence and try to get a draw at Liverpool which would be a good start. He will come on if we concede or to replace Pelle, anyway Good Luck Shane, you have joined a great club.

We have only two weeks left to sign a top CB, hopefully before the West Brom game where we need to take 3 points.
Phillip Wollscheid, van Dijk, Ron Vlaar, Rojo are all rumored targets and of a quality that we need to sign urgently. Good teams are always built from the back.

We also need a top GOALSCORER, plus a fast winger with a good cross to get the best from Pelle. We need to score 20 more goals this season.

Get these three in before the window closes and we really will be better than last season.

Come on Les, keep going you are slowly getting there.

You may need to speak up a bit as the Saints fans will be joining in too. If you can get him red carded you will be well on your way to becoming a Saints legend. And if you get anywhere near Brenda ask her how she managed to become the first female manager of a Premier League club.

The squabbling is over the season now starts. This last week has seen the close season finish on a much needed high with the incomings and positive news from Morgan. They will take time to gel and tomorrow will be a big ask but I was there last season and it was great so let's do it again!

Weak defence?? I don't think so. Bertrand is more defensively sound than Shaw and we've still got Clyne and Fonte...Plus Forster in goal.

We've just signed a top CB! I'm guessing because YOU haven't heard of him he's not good enough...

20 more goals?? You don't ask for much do you.

Why do we need to spend more money on strikers when we've got Pelle, Long, J Rod, Mayuka, Gallagher and Taider??

Give the players we've brought a chance first before you write them off and scream for more signings.

Off topic, but there is something that winds me up bit.

I notice on today's BBC website, Arsene Wenger is moaning that the season "has com too soon" and that he would prefer another week for players to recover from the World Cup etc, and Jose Mourinho has also stated that World Cup fatigue has stopped him from fielding his strongest XI.

My answer and solution to that is: "DON'T SIGN INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS WHO PLAY REGULARLY FOR THEIR COUNTRY!!!!"

Sorry, rant over, but things like this just wind me up. These managers sign international players and the moan when they play for their country.

I do know of Gardos but don't know how good will be, however but my point is that he is injured so will not be playing tomorrow. Also last season we all recognized that we needed a better CB to partner Lovren, that is still the case. Therefore my opinion is that Yoshida / Hoover will need help.

I also think we should give the fringe guys a chance, however, if we want to build on last season, we need another centre back, a winger and if I was greedy another option up front.

Micah Richards would cover Clyne and be a good centre half option?

Biabiany looks pretty good as a wide option?

Suarez would give us a bit more bite up front.

Sorry couldn't resist.

This will also have a positive effect on Jrod as they are BIG MATES.

With footballers - never forget the friends / mates factor. Letting Lambert go was a mistake imo as his mates BIGHEAD LALA and LOVREN wanted to join him as well as feather their own nests.

We all recognise the mistakes and schoolboy errors of the Summer and hope that Lessons have been learned and we do not go through this sorry saga again.

The positives are that we have held the line and kept Spiderman - we have an abundance of talent with new players coming in and we have FANTASTIC FANS.

I thought that both he and Turnbull were on loan at Swindon but others say it's only Turnbull this season. So, maybe you're right.
Wink, wink. How many goals from corners this season then Strass?
More than last year, Mack. Ron likes to prepare set pieces, so I reckon, including free-kicks, 20 set-piece goals this season; Pelle to score 5-10 from headers, JWP to net or create 5-10 from free kicks.

I said 15 goals more needed this season and perhaps 5 penalties!!
We must tighten the back long before our early games are out the way, we do not want to have problems after the easy run in…
A quality CB and I would expect us to do as good as last season or better provided the replacements are no better or worse than what we had…
Goals last year were a serious issue Long and Pelle may address this, Tadic IS in Holland a proven midfield scorer whreas Lallana most definately was not.
Who can tell…it is going to be great or frightening, i do not see any middle ground ..

The only thing of which I am certain is that the Saints will NOT be relegated, absolutely no way!

It is just absurd talk when one looks at our squad and with more to come. What is more, if it DID look dodgy come January, then there is money still available to take the necessary action.

What is wrong with some of these pundits? Have they not looked at the rest of the clubs - Leicester, Aston Villa, Burnley, QPR and now perhaps, Crystal Palace. Just ridiculous. COYR&WS!!!!!!!

Actually as I have posted we took in 90 million and were promised 30'million at the end of the season so that totals 120 million. I know some goes to salaries, but including that we still have about 60 million left. When will someone ask Ralph why we have that discrepancy which surely will cost us this season.

Wow, if that's true, it's time to panic. However, let's rephrase it more accurately (using Betfair's odds).

So sad to see that Saints are favourites to go down (apart from:
Burnley,
QPR,
Leicester,
West Brom,
Crystal Palace,
Hull,
Aston Villa,
Sunderland,
Swansea and
West Ham).

Apart from them, we are, indeed, favourites to go down. We're doomed, doomed, I tell ye!

For me at this moment it is likely to be:
Villa – dodged the drop for the last 2 seasons and the owner wants out, never a good sign for re-investing. Roy Keane as assistant coach may help or hinder.

Burnley – Great achievement last year with a small tight squad, kudos to Sean Dyche. Sadly they don’t have the funds and will fall apart in the second half of the season when the going gets tough.

Palace – No Tony Pulis with his magical tricks that are uneasy on the eye but seem to guarantee prem survivle.

The majority of pundits are ex pros that are too gutless to take on a managerial job or are sacked managers who are perhaps out of a coaching job for what they have done in their previous position.
Having said that, I watch all games live on Fox Sports in Australia.
The studio pundits are Mark Bosnich and Robbie Slater and I have to say they probably fit the criteria above, but I thoroughly enjoy their honest input.

Yep I said exactly that earlier today and got minus 19 from the happy clappers. Everyone knows Yoshida is not PL quality and mark my words Liverpool will exploit that!
I notice that lots of the teams have drawn today so if we lose tomorrow it won't be a good start for us. A draw would be a good result for us. Here's hoping!

True, childish I know but I really wanted them to lose, it's not only because of Poxi I have always hated Spurs, i have never understood why they and a lot of pundits think of them as such a big side.

Good to have you back now the season is starting again Velleity. I took a leaf out of your book (In the main).

Time for genuine Saints fans to take back their site... and p1ss off the wums and skates. COYR

Good luck to all our team and RonKo. Now let's go out there and make this a great season. Liverpool are there for the taking. Then the run of easy fixtures. Once we're through those we'll be strongly placed to take on the big boys some of whom may be below us in the table by mid October! I predict 60 points and 7th or 6th place this season. Then with most players believing in our manager and our club's future we'll hang on to most of them and really push on next season. Sorry for being so pessimistic!

A few weeks ago when Remy's transfer to liverhampton fell through I posted a half hearted comment that we should sign him if his 'medical' problem wasn't that serious, cos it would stick one up on the scousers. I got absolutely slated for that comment. I still think he is an absolutely gifted player and although it looks like he will stay at QPR (watching MOTD he looked great) I stand by my original thoughts that we could have got him if we had made an offer back then. Maybe I'm wrong or just plain and simply stupid, but I think we might have missed out on a great chance to get a striker (that we need)
