Ramirez completes shock Hull switch

Gaston Ramirez has completed a shock season long loan move to Hull.

The £12m midfielder has made the switch to the KC Stadium after being told he could not be guaranteed first team football at St Mary’s.

The move will be the biggest surprise to come out of Saints on deadline day as Ronald Koeman said only last week that he was not prepared to let Ramirez leave the club, and talked up his first team chances.

However, the imminent arrival of Sadio Mane seems to have changed things.

Ramirez is understood to feel that his chances are going to be further limited, and Hull’s late interest which also means greater first team opportunities has seen them tie up a deal for the Uruguayan international.

The 23-year-old has struggled to live up to the hype of his fanfare of an arrival from Bologna two years ago.

He has generally found himself as a bit part player as he has struggled to fit into the physical nature of the Premier League.

In his two seasons with Saints he has made just 27 starts with a further 22 appearances from the bench and has scored eight goals.

It is expected to be a busy next hour or so with announcements from St Mary’s as the transfer window closes. Keep up with all the latest by reading our blog

Strange one this. Ron has used him so he obviously was part of the plan. But if we don't really need him his is the big wage to get off the books but it does run his contract down, wouldn't it be better to sell him?

It's a loan so let's let someone else take the risk i say. It seems to be the window for it everywhere..

Didn't see that coming - would rather sell him than loan him out, surely an Italian side would want him - spent a long time waiting for him to become a worldbeater, sadly he never seems to have done so. Shame ... hope this means we've got better coming in in the next 17 minutes ...

In my opinion this transfer does make sense, the reason for this is that Ramirez hasn't been able to get into the starting 11 at Saints and obviously wants first team football which Hull can provide. Additionally Ramirez is still adapting to life in the EPL so more games at Hull might make him better in the long term for Saints.

Plus from what I can gather Koeman didn't want to let him go but Ramirez was desperate for game time.

No - that's why in one hour or so there is nothing more for them to moan about. It will be about the team and the manager and how we do. I am sure there will be normal posters back on again after this bl00dy window closes.

I will restrict my comments to performance. We played the Hammers in the Southampton way........and Spuds had 70% posession against Liverpuddle in the Poxyttino way.

Nothing has changed.....the results speak for themselves.

The fact that Gaston has been loaned out with a no-buy clause in my mind equates to Ronko still having faith in him and loose plans to possibly use him in the future, depending on what happens in the January window. If that proves to be a turbulent time and Gaston does well at Hull during the season getting some game time, it would be a good insurance policy. In any case, I feel he was loaned out because we got Mane in.

It might be we're not completely done with him Seed. He's shown in flashes what he can do but his injuries haven't really enable him to have a full run. Wonder what he might be worth today - proabablly a lot less than we paid. Maybe their thinking is a loan away with someone else paying part or maybe all of his wages and the chance to prove he's still worth 10+ mill on the market and then sell or maybe if he proves himself re-integrate him here if he toughens up a bit. If it works could be a good bit of business, if it doesn't then, of course you'd be right, bit of a gamble this one eh!?

Steady mate - only on loan, and I guess there's a recall clause if we get caught with our trousers down. He needs to toughen up a bit and he needs games to prove he's got it or he hasn't. Hope it all works out well for him 'cos the little flashes of him we did see showed he can do it - just not often enough yet. And someone else is at least helping to pay his wage while he's learning. Could work out well for all included.

Hull in winter time is a desperate place to be stuck in. Generalizing of course but nice people up there though, really friendly and down to earth, little in the way of airs and graces about them. Enjoyed a little job up there many many years ago. But when that wind whips in he will be fantasizing about Southampton for sure.

Gaston is class but there is something not right. Koeman apparently wanted him to stay but there's some accountancy going on here too and this seems good business if we can get his wage off our tab. Maybe he just cannot adapt to this country, or the physicality or whatever - I don't know.

But he should be a regular starter at Hull and that may enable him to make sufficient impact to keep up his transfer value. We shall see , but I really doubt we will ever see him in a Saints shirt again.
