Fraser Forster is hoping for the chance to stake his claim for the England number one spot at Wembley tonight.

The Saints stopper has been in fine form since his £10m move to St Mary’s, while Joe Hart has had a stuttering start to the new season.

Forster has been backed to become England’s first choice keeper over the course of this season, and is hoping for a chance to shine in the friendly with Norway at Wembley tonight, which comes before a trip to Basel to take on Switzerland in a European Championship qualifier.

Roy Hodgson has not named Forster in his starting line-up, but the 26-year-old will hope to get an opportunity at some point.

Hodgson said: “We want two good results, starting tomorrow night, to get that feel-good factor back.

“It will be a young team, for sure, with some very interesting young talents and players of enormous potential.”

Former Saints youngster Calum Chambers is one of the players hoping to win his first cap tonight.

“It is a friendly game that gives us a chance to find out more about some of them,” said Hodgson.

“There is a lot of anticipation. The players have only been together since Sunday evening but we seemed to have crammed an awful lot in during those training sessions.

“I get the feeling the players can't wait to kick off this campaign. The players are ready to go.”

“It will be a young team, with some very interesting young talents and players of enormous potential”

Hodgson was at pains to point out that it is not his business what clubs do with the English players on their books and insisted the influx of European talent this summer is not a concern.

He added: “I worked for a long time in club football and when you work there the only thing that matters to you is your club: getting the best results and finding the right players.

“It's unrealistic to think that club managers should bear in mind the England national side or the Welsh national side.

“I think we've got enough players I think we just need to accept as a nation that some of our players will be selected from benches not necessarily because they're the first name at their club side.

“I also think the standard in the Premier League is such that we are becoming a magnet for the best players in the world.

“You could argue for some of our players that do become regulars it is advantageous for them.”

Confirmed England team for tonight's game: Hart; Stones, Cahill, Jones, Baines; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Henderson, Wilshere, Sterling; Rooney, Sturridge.

Roy!!!!! already a proven failure at this level changed his mind at the last minute in Brazil and resorted to the old guard which let us down and will continue to do the same.
Build a young side keep them together and over the next 3/4 years see them develope surely this wouldn't be any worse than what we have had to put up with for the past 30 odd years.

Anyway get this waste of time international out of the way because I can't wait to tear Newcastle a new air vent in the rear, with this great looking Saints squad

Have to agree with the above posters. I won't be bothering to watch Ingerlund tonight, but really anticipating with relish next Saturday. The reviews I've seen of Mane suggest he is something special, & hopefully he will link up fantastically with our new look team. Now that Pelle is off the mark, I really want him to get a brace at home to shut up the neggies who were murmuring against after 20 minutes of the WBA game.

With a stronger defence now in front of him and England GK coach at Saints, there is no reason why he cannot be England's No 1.

Yes - Saints can show England the way forward. We have the youngest squad in the EPL but with an abundance of talent and huge potential. We will grow into a top club - bit like the ManU team in the early 1990s but we have even more youthful quality. England need a much younger manager at the helm to lead with his own more youthful enthusiasm and energy. Don't worry, RonKo is staying with us for many years!

It's a shame that Woy doesn't pick players that are actually playing for their sides! No wonder the ruddy England side struggles when he's picking bench warmers! Who cares what quality they have. If they aren't playing regular first team footy, then they shouldn't be playing for England! We would then see a few more players get the call up. We might even see players from the Championship get the call, and there's one goo d thing about that - we might then be on a par with other nations that pick their teams from LOWER LEAGUE sides and BEAT US!

It's Great British Bake Off for me, will definitely be more exciting than watching England. Woy needs to make up his mind about what he really thinks, it wasn't that long ago he was saying that it was a really good move for Rickie & Lallana to move to that top Club Liverpool even though this has turned them into 'bit part players' - oh sorry I forgot Lallana hasn't set foot on the pitch since his move, whereas they got into the England reckoning by playing every week for that small Club called Southampton!!! Ah, there is also that player called Chambers who also played in the first team at Southampton, but now he wears an Arsenal shirt he is good enough to walk straight into the England squad ahead of England players who have played at Under 21 level - how does this conveyor belt system work? I really feel sorry for the likes of Clyne and Cork.
Woy is back-tracking to justify why he has to pick players who are basically not good enough to wear the England shirt.

This will make you laugh.

According to quotes attributed to Van Gaal, he has said, “if I wanted an easy life, I would have gone to Tottenham Hotspur.”

Why did I watch that absolutely boring England Norway match? 3 things to come out of this for me.
1. Thank god Roy is not our manager.
2.Our new goalie was not called into action therefore not injured.
3.Why are English players so clueless when they play together?
