Maya Yoshida has revealed he would like to stay at Saints beyond this season, but admits there have been no discussions with the club about a new contract.

The future of the centre-half (pictured) is the subject of some doubt, as his current deal is due to expire at the end of the campaign.

“I haven’t heard anything,” was Yoshida’s response to whether a new contract was being discussed.

The 26-year-old, who started the season as Jose Fonte’s regular partner at the heart of defence before being displaced by Toby Alderweireld, explained he is not keen to say goodbye to Southampton at the end of the season.

In fact, the only thing that he says has not suited him at the club is the lack of playing time he has received in the past 18 months or so.

On whether he would be open to staying, Yoshida said: “Yes, because this training ground is fantastic, the stadium is fantastic, I love the city as well, my wife is satisfied, so if I play every week there is not any problem. The problem is I didn’t play long time now.

“I don’t know if the club wants me or not, but I will focus on playing football, because December is a very, very important time for us.

“It’s not my job. The contract is my agent’s job, so everything depends on them.”
